00:04He is St. Peter's 267th successor to wear the shoes of the fishermen and lead a Catholic flock.

00:23Pope Leo XIV, a Villanova alumni and Windy City native,

00:27is also a polyglot who speaks well in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, and can read German and Latin.

00:34The Holy See's official language and is a citizen of Peru, America, and now the Vatican's head of state.

00:41Definitely a huge factor in getting him known by his peers in the conclave,

00:45who eventually voted for him as we hear more from our Gab de Llegas.

00:48After three rounds of casting ballots, the Cardinals elected the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Church.

00:59It was past midnight, Manila time, when white smoke came out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

01:04The faithful who waited at St. Peter's Square felt pure joy and excitement.

01:09Cardinal Proto-Deacon Dominic Mamberti announced that Cardinal Robert Francis Provost

01:14was chosen by the Cardinals to be the next pontiff.

01:18He chose Leo XIV as his chosen papal name in honor of Leo XIII,

01:22one of the longest reigning pontiffs in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

01:27In his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, he blessed those in St. Peter's Square.

01:32The new pontiff also thanked the Cardinals who elected him

01:35and paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis.

01:38Leo XIV was born on September 14, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois,

02:08in the United States.

02:09He is the first Agustinian Pope and second from the Americas.

02:14He completed a course in philosophy and mathematics in 1977

02:18at Villanova University in Pennsylvania

02:21and entered the seminary to become part of the Agustinian Order.

02:25In 1982, he was ordained into priesthood at the Agustinian College of St. Monica in Rome.

02:31Provost spent a long time doing missionary work in Peru

02:34before becoming leader of the Agustinians.

02:36In 2014, he was designated by Pope Francis as Apostolic Administrator

02:42of the Diocese of Chiclavo in Peru and later become bishop in 2015.

02:47In 2019, Pope Francis appointed him as to the Congregation for the Clergy

02:52and Member of the Congregation of Bishops in 2020.

02:56In 2023, Provost was appointed Prefect of the Decastory for Bishops

03:01and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America where he was promoted as Archbishop.

03:06In January of last year, he was appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis.

03:12Provost visited the country several times before he became Pope.

03:16In 2004, then Father Provost, Prior General of the Agustinians,

03:21visited Cebu for the first time to bless the friary in the area.

03:25In 2008 and 2013, Father Provost also came over to bless the Formation House of the Agustinians in Intramuros, Manila.

03:33During those years, Father Provost had encounters with Manila Archbishop Emeritus Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales

03:40and the then Archbishop of Manila, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.

03:45In 2010, Father Provost celebrated Mass at San Agustinian Church in Intramuros

03:50for the Intermediate General Chapter of the Congregation.

03:54Also one of the places he visited was the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu.

03:58At 5 p.m. Manila time, he presided over his first Mass as Pope

04:03with the Cardinals for the conclusion of the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel.
