00:00The situation along the line of control and the India-Pakistan border,
00:04all along India's western flank and Pakistan's eastern flank remains extremely precarious.
00:10Pakistan tried to send in its drones, its rockets, its missiles and fighter jets.
00:17This is the area where Pakistan attempted to do so.
00:20So this is Jammu and Kashmir.
00:22There was an attempt near Jammu.
00:24This is Punjab.
00:25There was an attempt in multiple locations in Punjab.
00:27This is Rajasthan.
00:29And somewhere here in the Jaisalmer belt, Pakistan tried.
00:32This is Gujarat.
00:34Again, in Gujarat, Pakistan tried to send in its drones.
00:39And there were 500 drones that were sent.
00:42Almost like a swarm drone attack in multiple locations.
00:46But Bharat has this Abhedyya Suraksha Kavach.
00:51An impenetrable, completely impenetrable security blanket, so to say.
00:57A missile defense shield.
00:58And this missile defense shield not just comprises the S-400 systems from Russia,
01:03but also the indigenous Aakash system and much more.
01:08Before I get you more on this big story, I want to quickly cut across to my colleague Sandeep Unnitan for more on this.
01:13And Sandeep, Pakistan tried.
01:16It's not that Pakistan is not trying.
01:17It's not succeeding.
01:19Explain to us why, despite its best efforts, the Chinese technology, the weapons and systems that China has,
01:24why isn't Pakistan succeeding?
01:26Well, Gaurat, the short answer for that is the Indian Air Force's IACCS, the Integrated Air Command and Control System,
01:33which is an air defense network that covers most of northern and western India.
01:38And this grid has been built by the Air Force over several decades.
01:42Now, what it is essentially comprises of, it's got a range of missiles in different capabilities, different missile systems,
01:50the centerpiece of which you mentioned is the S-400 missile system.
01:54It's a very, very capable missile system.
01:56And the Air Force was fully aware of its capabilities.
01:59They told the government this.
02:01And this is the reason that the Narendra Bodhi government, way back in 2018, Gaurav, took on the United States.
02:07They took on the risk of CAATSA sanctions from the United States to buy five of these systems from the Russian Federation.
02:13And that bold decision, that diplomatic muscle that they showed with the United States,
02:19standing up to the U.S. pressure, has now paid off such rich dividends seven years later.
02:25This is a huge investment for our air defense network, Gaurav.
02:29You cannot underestimate the importance of that very, very significant decision we took seven years back.
02:35Of course, there are other components to the IACCS, which is basically a large grid.
02:40You have something called the RASP, the RASP, which is a rapidly emerging air situation picture,
02:45which connects all airborne and ground-based sensors to give a complete 360-degree picture of the entire airspace,
02:54the battle space around India, the northern and western parts of India.
02:58So the Air Force controllers on the ground can, in one fell swoop, they can look at the entire picture,
03:05down that entire location, that 3,000 kilometer border, right from Jammu and Kashmir down to Gujarat.
03:12And, you know, they have a full air situation picture.
03:15And then they can start allocating resources, which missile is going to tackle which threat.
03:20And in this case, Gaurav, the drones that the Pakistanis have attacked us with, 500 drones,
03:26most of them low-cost, you know, drones.
03:29I mean, they're literally expendable drones.
03:32They just sent it across for propaganda purposes, I would think.
03:35Or, you know, I think Pakistan is evil as a state, and especially the army, wouldn't trust them.
03:41In fact, there are many in the security apparatus in India, who say several things about Pakistan,
03:47which I will tell some of you offline, because online, when they say,
03:51you see somebody who's wearing a Pakistan army uniform and a snake, you know who's to be taken down first.
03:57Well, the mask has certainly fallen off the Pakistan military and its support for terrorism, Gaurav.
04:02And that is something that we've seen in the last 48 hours,
04:06where it's unprecedented, a military funeral for a terrorist.
04:10And you have soldiers standing side by side with terrorists, designated terrorists.
04:14What is the message that Pakistan is sending out to the world?
04:17As you very rightly pointed out, the mask is off.
04:19There's breaking news coming in, and I want to get you details of the big story.
04:23We will show you on camera how India downed Pakistan's swamp drone attack.
04:29This is an India Today exclusive report.
04:33You're watching real time how India saw the threat coming in,
04:39and how Pakistan's attack was neutralized.
04:43These are those images that show you.
04:45This is an India Today exclusive.
04:46An Indian Army and Air Force together thwarted the April 8th drone strike by Pakistan
04:52with what is being described as one of the most successful systems,
04:56the L-70, the Akash system, the ZOO-23 system.
05:02And this is like a coordinated response from the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
05:06Joint friendship works so perfectly.
05:09The drone attack happened, and in a timely manner.
05:12You know, there's an old saying,
05:14in the armed forces being forewarned is being forearmed.
05:1720 soft kills, according to the Army, on the 8th of May.
05:20And look at the timing.
05:22The timing also visible there, 8pm to 11.30pm.
05:26That is where Pakistan carried out raids with 500 small unmanned aerial vehicles
05:32in 24 cities from Jammu and Kashmir, across Punjab, across Rajasthan to Gujarat in India.
05:39And that entire effort, it just failed.
05:41It just failed because India was so much better prepared.
05:45And I want to bring in India today's ace defence correspondent, Shivani Sharma,
05:51who joins me on this broadcast.
05:52Shivani, bring us details.
05:54Your sources have given you these images.
05:56You've accessed these images.
05:57The big picture that emerges, Shivani.
06:00Gaurav, these are the exclusive images of the Swarm Doan attack that was directed towards India
06:10in several cities, more than two dozen cities and locations in India.
06:15Yesterday night, between 8.30 and 11.30, the timelines are also very specific,
06:21right after when sirens were sounded in Jammu.
06:24And we saw how these projectiles were moving in different locations.
06:28And the air defence system of the country thwarted all these swarm drones.
06:33So this was a big offence that Pakistan had attempted.
06:38And India neutralised the threat within no time, Gaurav.
06:42And this is how Pakistan's swarm drones and 500, not two, not three,
06:48but 500 swarm drones in different locations across the western border, across the states,
06:54right from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab to Rajasthan.
06:58They were all directed towards the locations of these cities, not only the military locations,
07:05but also where the people are residing, the residents.
07:08So the civilian population was also on target.
07:11But the air defence system, which is a combination of multiple assets,
07:15starting from the S-400 to the Akash missiles, the Pichora missiles,
07:19the unarmed counter-air defence systems.
07:23So all this was in place.
07:25This multiple-layered air defence system neutralised the threat in no time.
07:30And this was, again, a failed attempt by Pakistan,
07:34the misadventure that was dealt with strongly by India.
07:38Gaurav.
07:38Okay, and Shivani, the systems, the fact that the army and the air force operate together seamlessly, seamlessly,
07:46how are they explaining this Pakistani, or what sources are saying,
07:50at least some of these drones that the Pakistanis sent were unarmed.
07:54Were they testing our defences,
07:55or were they making us spend very expensive ammunition in neutralising worthless drones,
08:02and the real attack perhaps would follow later?
08:04Gaurav, this seems to be a panic action from Pakistan,
08:13a very bad strategically planned action that was failed within no time.
08:18And it now seems that they've been testing our shield over the skies.
08:23That's what we can only say,
08:24because all of these attempts have been thwarted within no time.
08:28This is happening across states, Gaurav.
08:32This is Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu Airport, the Srinagar Airport, Punjab.
08:37Major defence establishments were also...
08:40Remember, before yesterday, there was an attempt by Pakistan the prior night,
08:45also following the Operation Sindhur,
08:48that was also thwarted by India.
08:51And all the Pakistani drones were brought down.
08:54They all landed in their debris on Indian soil.
08:58This was the second attempt, mind you, that happened yesterday evening,
09:02starting 8.30 onwards,
09:04that kept on in various locations,
09:07right from Rajasthan's Jaisalmer to Jammu Airport, Jammu City,
09:11RS Pura sector and many other sectors in Srinagar also,
09:15in Amritsar also.
09:17For a moment, I want to bring in Sandeep Unnithan,
09:23on these images that you've just shared with us.
09:26The quadcopters and rather cheap-looking Chinese quadcopters.
09:30Isn't this, Sandeep?
09:31Why would Pakistan send this?
09:33And is it actually, one, testing our defences,
09:36two, making us poof off very expensive ammunition to take down this?
09:41Absolutely, Gaurav.
09:42Those two points that you mentioned,
09:43I just want to add a third to that.
09:44This is possibly a propaganda move by Pakistan.
09:47They want to tell their citizens,
09:48look, we've attacked India in 500 different locations
09:51and we've sent all of these, you know, drones and all that.
09:54But the visuals that we are seeing on screen right now
09:57suggest a very different picture.
09:58They've used cheap Chinese drones.
10:01And as you mentioned rightly,
10:02that this is to spoof our system,
10:04to force us to expend ammunition.
10:07And, you know, but what they don't realize
10:09is that we have plenty of ammunition.
10:11There's a lot more where that came from.
10:13But, you know, interesting, Gaurav,
10:14on the left side,
10:15you're looking at a display of possibly what I think is
10:17the display unit of the L-70 gun.
10:20That's our primary air defence gun, Gaurav.
10:23It's been in service since independence.
10:26It's a gun that was built in the 1940s.
10:28It's a Swedish design gun,
10:30which we have manufactured indigenously.
10:32We have over a thousand of those guns.
10:34And this has been upgraded, Gaurav.
10:36It's been brought into the 21st century
10:38by Bharat Electronics Limited.
10:40It's one of our frontline platforms
10:42in the fight against swarm drones,
10:44unmanned aerial vehicles,
10:46missiles and aircraft, of course.
10:48It's a very, very capable system.
10:49As you can see,
10:50it's been, you know,
10:51it's been made into a radar-directed gun now.
10:55From that manual gun,
10:57the hydraulics have been replaced
10:58by all-electric drives.
11:00It's a very sophisticated platform.
11:01Which just makes it all the more better.
11:03So, you know,
11:04if it's no longer hydraulic,
11:05in high altitude,
11:07it's easier.
11:09In the desert area,
11:10it's easier.
11:11Less oil,
11:12less sand getting into the system.
11:14Absolutely.
11:14And all of that makes it so much better.
11:16It's all silent, Gaurav.
11:17And it's completely silent.
11:18It's silent,
11:18it's noiseless,
11:19and it's very effective.
11:20It's devastating.
11:21It's got a range of something like
11:23four to five kilometres.
11:24And it's got,
11:25it can fire something like
11:26200 shells per minute.
11:28It's a very, very lethal weapon.
11:29And it's,
11:30you know,
11:30it's actually in this
11:31upgraded avatar.
11:33We've saved a lot of money
11:34by doing this.
11:34And it's,
11:35it's a tribute to our engineers
11:37at Bharat Electronics Limited
11:39who've done this
11:40over the last couple of years.
11:41And this is,
11:42you know,
11:43a second world war technology
11:45which has been upgraded
11:46and upgraded.
11:47And now,
11:48it is in its final avatar.
11:49You're seeing the proof of the pudding
11:50that's in the eating.
11:52And the eating is right in front
11:53of your eyes, Gaurav.
11:54You know,
11:54what I want our viewers to know,
11:57when people say,
11:58India is not well defended,
12:00when people say,
12:01Pakistan is better off,
12:03I don't know where they get
12:05that,
12:05their information from.
12:06And look at India's
12:08point defence,
12:10you know,
12:10from a man pad,
12:12a shoulder fired surface
12:14to air missile
12:15and IGLA
12:15to the S-400 system.
12:19Take a look at some
12:20of the indigenous components
12:22that are coming in
12:23and Sandeep,
12:24elaborate on it.
12:25So, yes,
12:26we also have the ZOO-23,
12:28you know,
12:28those second world war guns.
12:31Anyways,
12:31all of us who've read
12:32commando comics
12:33would know a lot about
12:34Akhtung,
12:35tak, tak, tak, tak, tak,
12:36is what we read
12:37in those comics.
12:38But we've seen them in action.
12:39I've seen them in action
12:40in Kargil war.
12:41We'll show you that gun,
12:42the ZOO-23,
12:44then you have the 70mm,
12:45then, you know,
12:47keep going up the chain
12:48to the tangushka
12:49that your armour would want,
12:51your samper choras,
12:52the shilkas.
12:53Yes.
12:54And Sandeep will explain
12:55each and every one to you.
12:57I want to talk about
12:58the Akash system.
12:59The Akash,
13:00it's a part of India's
13:01integrated missile development programme,
13:04Agni Prithvi Akash
13:05Nag Trishul.
13:061983,
13:07if I remember
13:08the year correctly,
13:09late APJ Abdul Kalam,
13:11it was,
13:12he said,
13:13we have to make it in India.
13:14We don't need this missile
13:15with us.
13:16And, you know,
13:17Sandeep,
13:17so many people said,
13:18you can't do it.
13:19And he said,
13:19we will do it.
13:20We've done it.
13:21It's holding us in good stead
13:23in 2025
13:24through a lot of problems
13:26that Akash system had.
13:27Absolutely.
13:28In fact, Gaurav,
13:28the Akash is,
13:30you know,
13:30it's a tribute to India's
13:31indigenous defense capability
13:33because this entire system,
13:35the radar,
13:36the fire control system,
13:37the trucks,
13:38the missiles itself,
13:39of course,
13:40all of it is made in India.
13:42Therefore,
13:42we can export it as a system.
13:44It's one of the very few systems
13:45that's entirely end-to-end
13:47it's made in India.
13:48We can export the system.
13:49And indeed,
13:50we are in talks
13:51with a number of countries
13:52in Asia
13:53and in Africa
13:53for Akash missile export.
13:56It's inexpensive.
13:57It is inexpensive.
13:57It's made in India.
13:58It's accurate.
13:59It's better than the Chinese missile.
14:01Yes,
14:02it's much better
14:03than the Chinese missile.
14:04And it's now battle-tested.
14:06It's battle-tested.
14:07And it's,
14:08you know,
14:09the cornerstone
14:09of a completely indigenous
14:11range of missiles.
14:12You have the Akash,
14:13then you have the Akash
14:14new generation,
14:15the next generation.
14:16Extended range.
14:16Extended range.
14:17You keep building up
14:18on the capabilities,
14:19Akash,
14:20Gaurav,
14:20and that is what is
14:21the contribution
14:22of this missile system
14:24that we started
14:24way back in 1983.
14:26It's the tribute
14:27to our,
14:27you know,
14:28visionary scientists
14:29who stuck to their guns
14:31and decided to develop
14:32all of this
14:32indigenous land.
14:33Today again,
14:34Gaurav,
14:35the proof of the pudding
14:36is in the eating.
14:37The Akash is there.
14:38It's performed.
14:38It's a very,
14:39very critical component
14:40of our IACCS
14:42and it's been used
14:43successfully in the field.
14:45And this means
14:47very well for the system
14:48and its future variants,
14:50Gaurav.
14:50You know,
14:50for those who mock
14:51Atmanirvhar Bharatan defence,
14:54do keep in mind,
14:56Ukraine was fighting Russia.
14:58Ukraine is dependent
14:59entirely on equipment
15:00that's about,
15:01for a majority
15:02of its equipment,
15:03it's dependent on
15:04Germany,
15:06England,
15:06France,
15:07United States of America,
15:08NATO coming forward
15:09and helping them.
15:10Sometimes,
15:11and I was on ground
15:12and Sandeep,
15:13bear me out,
15:14they would be ready
15:15for the assault.
15:17The ammunition
15:17wouldn't be there.
15:18The rockets,
15:19the missiles,
15:20the tanks,
15:20the armoured personal carriers,
15:21they wouldn't have it.
15:22So their men
15:23would go into combat
15:24without their equipment
15:25and they would be cut down.
15:27Imagine,
15:28if they were making
15:29in their own country,
15:31it would have helped them.
15:33That is why
15:34make in India
15:34is so important.
15:35Yes,
15:36it's slow.
15:37Yes,
15:37it's time consuming
15:38and we need to improve.
15:39We need,
15:39our scientists need to improve.
15:41Our engineers need to improve.
15:43The delivery has to be there.
15:44It has to be flawless.
15:45But there is no alternative
15:46to make in India.
15:47There is no alternative indeed,
15:49Gaurav.
15:49You've hit the nail on the head.
15:50If you want to be
15:51a power of some standing,
15:53you have to build
15:54your own missile systems,
15:55you have to build
15:56your own defence capabilities.
15:57Otherwise,
15:58like you currently pointed out,
16:00you are at the mercy
16:01of your foreign suppliers.
16:03They would probably
16:04sell you the weapons,
16:05they might not sell you
16:06the weapons.
16:07They will decide
16:08the schedule
16:08for the delivery
16:09of the components
16:10and parts
16:11and all that
16:11and you have to keep
16:12running back to them.
16:13And this is how
16:14big countries
16:15control narratives.
16:16They control smaller countries
16:17by this.
16:18And what you're actually
16:19doing, Gaurav,
16:19when you import weapons,
16:21you are actually
16:22importing security.
16:24And this is something
16:25that you cannot compromise on.
16:26You can't compromise
16:27on your own
16:28national security.
16:29And that is the reason
16:30there is no alternative
16:31but to develop
16:32your own weapon systems.
16:34Atmanirwar Bharat
16:35is essential.
16:36Remember,
16:37look at Pakistan,
16:38for example.
16:39Pakistan is forced
16:40to do a sajda
16:41to China
16:43and kowtow.
16:44Kowtow is the word,
16:45the Chinese word.
16:46sajda is the Pakistani word.
16:49But that is what
16:49Pakistan does.
16:50Sometimes it does a sajda
16:52to the United States
16:53of America.
16:54Sometimes it does a sajda
16:55to China.
16:56Sometimes it will do
16:57a sajda
16:57to anybody else.
16:59But all it will do
17:00is a sajda.
17:01I mean,
17:02they're permanently
17:02on their knees
17:03like right now
17:04in front of the
17:05international money.
17:06They've shifted
17:06from one foreign supplier
17:09to another one.
17:09They've moved
17:10from the United States
17:11and towards China.
17:13They're 80%
17:14of their recent
17:15arms imports
17:16are of Chinese origin.
17:18So the Chinese again
17:19are going to be
17:20holding the screws
17:21on Pakistan.
17:22They are going to
17:23tell them what to do.
17:24They are going to
17:25tell them
17:26the kind of weapons
17:27that they get.
17:28They will decide
17:28the caliber,
17:29the characteristics,
17:30the marks,
17:31all of that.
17:32This is a capability
17:33that you get
17:34when you develop
17:34your own missile system.
17:35Nobody tells you
17:36what you want
17:37or what you need.
17:38For a moment,
17:39for a moment,
17:39as we look at
17:40the Pakistani weapons
17:41and why Pakistani weapons
17:43failed
17:43and the Indian weapons,
17:45why they're doing so good,
17:46it's actually a combination
17:47that India has.
17:49And it's amazing
17:50when you look at
17:51these Chinese HQ-16,
17:52for example,
17:53based on the S-300s
17:54of Russia,
17:56remade by China,
17:58sold the LV-80 version,
18:00sold to Pakistan.
18:01So the foreign version,
18:03anyway,
18:03I believe,
18:03is subpar.
18:05It's subpar.
18:06It would be definitely
18:07one or two levels
18:07below what the Chinese forces use.
18:09So that's the game
18:11that big countries play.
18:12They will never sell
18:13top-of-the-line weapons
18:14of their own
18:15to other countries.
18:16They will always sell
18:16degraded versions of that.
18:18They don't want their weapons
18:19to be used,
18:20you know,
18:20against themselves.
18:21So that is the kind of things
18:22that they do
18:23when they handle
18:24weapons exports.
18:25But this is a lesson
18:26for us as well,
18:28Gaurav.
18:28The Chinese,
18:29look at the Chinese.
18:30In the last 20 or 25 years,
18:32they've gone from
18:32importing a lot of
18:34Russian hardware
18:34to now copying it,
18:36duplicating it,
18:37and now exporting them.
18:38Yes.
18:38In the face of,
18:40you know,
18:41global opposition
18:42and of course,
18:43competing against
18:44Russian systems.
18:44You know,
18:44this image that we see
18:45on our television screens
18:46right now,
18:47that the PL-15
18:50long-range
18:50air-to-air missile.
18:52Gaurav,
18:52you are looking at
18:53one of the biggest
18:54intelligence coup
18:55in several years.
18:57Now,
18:57the United States,
18:58for one,
18:59would pay
18:59for the weight in gold
19:01for that missile
19:02that the Punjab policemen
19:04are handling over there.
19:05That's a PL-15
19:06very long-range
19:08Chinese missile.
19:08It's rarely been seen
19:10in public.
19:11It's possibly been used,
19:12fired for the first time.
19:14And this is something
19:15that I can confirm
19:16that our scientists
19:17are looking at it
19:18very closely right now.
19:19They're examining
19:20its characteristics.
19:21This is a missile
19:22that has literally
19:23emerged from behind
19:24the bamboo curtain,
19:26Gaurav.
19:27and this has been supplied
19:28to Pakistan very recently
19:30as tensions
19:31began ratcheting up.
19:32It's part of
19:33the Pakistan's
19:35Pakistan Air Force.
19:36But it has an amazing
19:37range of almost
19:37200 kilometers.
19:38It's believed to have a range
19:39of something like
19:40200 kilometers.
19:41And I'm sure
19:42our scientists,
19:42our DRDO scientists
19:43are studying
19:44the characteristics
19:45of this weapon
19:46even as we speak.
19:47They must be
19:47taking it apart
19:48to try and understand
19:49its characteristics
19:50and how
19:51it matches
19:52against our own
19:53indigenous
19:54DRDO long-range
19:56air-to-air missile,
19:57the Astra.
19:58Yeah, Astra.
19:59I also want to
20:00understand from you
20:02right now,
20:03the Chinese commanders
20:05would probably be
20:06slapping the Pakistani
20:07Air Force
20:08for letting go
20:10of a PL-15
20:11like this.
20:12Absolutely, Gaurav.
20:13Because the Chinese
20:13secrets are out
20:14in the open.
20:15Chinese secrets
20:15are out in the open
20:16and Gaurav,
20:16I very well see
20:18the PL-15
20:20being the top
20:21of the agenda
20:22in India-US
20:24talks in the next
20:25round of defense
20:26dialogue,
20:26the United States
20:27would ask to see
20:28these missiles
20:29because let's not
20:30forget, Gaurav,
20:31these are the kind
20:32of missiles that
20:32the United States
20:33is going to be facing
20:34if a conflict
20:36were to break out
20:37over Taiwan.
20:38US fighters
20:39are going to be
20:39tracked and picked up
20:40by and targeted
20:41by missiles
20:42like the PL-15.
20:43I'm sure the United
20:44States would want
20:45to have a very,
20:46very close look
20:47at the PL-15.
20:48In fact,
20:49forget the United States.
20:49So from Guam-based,
20:50there's a C-130J
20:52that will be landing.
20:53Possibly a C-17, Gaurav.
20:54Or a C-17.
20:55Which would already
20:56be here
20:57and you would have
20:58experts queuing up
20:59to study this missile.
21:00It's a very,
21:00very enigmatic missile.
21:01We've seen
21:02mock-ups of it.
21:03We've seen dummies
21:04of it in arms exhibitions.
21:06But we've never seen
21:08an actual missile
21:09being fired
21:10in combat.
21:11And that is
21:12an intelligence
21:12windfall, Gaurav.
21:14So before I bring in
21:15our reporters
21:16and our guests
21:17and as we are waiting
21:18for the briefing
21:19of Operation Sindur
21:20by the Ministry
21:21of External Affairs
21:22and Defense,
21:23I want to understand
21:24what is your assessment
21:26of the Chinese equipment?
21:29Hasn't it proven
21:29to be rather subpar?
21:32Whether it is the,
21:33you know,
21:35the equivalent
21:36of their S-300s
21:37or the longer range
21:41air defense systems,
21:42they've all been
21:43rather subpar
21:44or the JF-17 Thunders
21:45or the J-10 Cs.
21:47Well, you know,
21:48the Chinese weapons,
21:49Gaurav,
21:50let's face it,
21:50they are a generation
21:51below the Russian systems.
21:54You know,
21:54they've reverse engineered
21:55a whole lot of Russian systems.
21:57We know all of that.
21:58But the important thing
22:00is that both the J-10s
22:01and the J-17s
22:03use Russian engines.
22:05Yes.
22:05Right?
22:05And that is something,
22:06they use the same engines,
22:08the RD-33
22:08that's used by the Meek-29
22:10for instance.
22:11So that's again,
22:12you know,
22:12a case of China
22:14being dependent on Russia
22:16for fighter jet engines.
22:18So, I mean,
22:19these are...
22:20But, you know,
22:21if you were to talk
22:22about the JF-17 Thunders,
22:23Chinese don't use them
22:24themselves.
22:25They found them subpar.
22:27So they palmed it off
22:28to the Pakistanis
22:29because this is the kind
22:31of jet that the Pakistanis
22:33want to replace
22:34their variants
22:35of the MiG-21.
22:36So, you know,
22:37the JF-17s
22:38would be very similar
22:40to our light combat aircraft,
22:42the LCA Tejas,
22:43which we've been developing
22:45from the 1980s
22:47and which is now coming
22:48in the numbers
22:49that we want it to replace
22:51all of the MiG-21s,
22:52in fact.
22:53So this is,
22:54this would be very similar
22:55to our LCA.
22:56But, you know,
22:58like you correctly pointed out,
22:59the fact that
23:00it's not good enough
23:01to enter PLA service.
23:03It's not good enough
23:04for PLA.
23:05Not good for the PLA.
23:06Palmed off to the Pakistanis.
23:07And it's a cheap export option
23:09for a number of air forces.
23:11I think some African countries
23:11are looking at it.
23:12African countries,
23:13Bangladesh is looking at it,
23:14possibly Sri Lanka as well.
23:15Okay.
23:16Okay.
23:16So apart from Africa,
23:17you have two neighbours of ours
23:18that may look at this.
23:19But after they've seen
23:20the subpar performance
23:21and I'm told
23:22that two of them
23:23have been lost,
23:24we're waiting for
23:24an official confirmation
23:25whether that comes or not.
23:27What we're also looking at
23:29is the J-10C,
23:30the multi-role fighter jet,
23:32again was said
23:33to be better.
23:34Right.
23:34The latest version
23:36with the PL-15s
23:37and I believe
23:38the PL-15s
23:38air-to-air missiles
23:39now come with
23:40an extended range
23:41beyond 200 kilometres.
23:42Beyond 200 kilometres,
23:44that's what we've been told.
23:45That's again
23:45another enigmatic missile.
23:47We haven't seen
23:47that missile
23:48being used in combat
23:49yet, Gaurav.
23:50But you know,
23:50the J-10
23:51that you're seeing
23:51on screen right now
23:52is a very interesting aircraft.
23:54It has a history.
23:55It's actually based
23:55on an Israeli design
23:57called the Lavi.
23:58Now, the Lavi itself
24:00was an Israeli copy
24:01of the F-16
24:02Fighting Falcon
24:03and that is something
24:04that the Chinese copied
24:06and now they've sold it
24:07to the, you know,
24:08to the Pakistanis
24:09three years ago,
24:102022 to be precise.
24:12And the Pakistan Air Force
24:14acquired these
24:15only to kind of
24:16achieve parity with India
24:17when our Rafale
24:18started being delivered
24:19it was a kind of
24:21a propaganda move
24:22for them to say
24:23that now we've acquired
24:25you know,
24:25a new aircraft
24:26that we believe
24:27is going to be equal
24:28or better than the Rafale.
24:30Of course,
24:30that's completely untrue
24:32because the Rafale
24:33can completely outclass
24:34the J-10.
24:35There is nothing
24:36literally in the subcontinent
24:37that can match
24:38you know,
24:39a Rafale.
24:40No fourth or fourth
24:414.5 generation aircraft
24:43can beat the Rafale.
24:46I want to quickly
24:46bring in Shivani Sharma
24:48into this conversation
24:49once again
24:49because Shivani,
24:50you were directly
24:51in the line of fire
24:52with a number
24:53of our reporters
24:54across from Jammu
24:55and Kashmir
24:56down Punjab
24:57through Rajasthan
24:59till Gujarat.
25:00But is the situation
25:01as bad right now?
25:02What is the bigger picture
25:04that you're picking up?
25:05Gaurav, since morning
25:11there has no shelling
25:14that has been reported
25:15at the line of control.
25:17The severe shelling
25:18that continued
25:18through the night
25:19stopped over the day.
25:21But we saw
25:21the evacuations happening.
25:23People are still
25:23under tension
25:25and worry.
25:25They are under fear
25:27that what would happen
25:28tonight
25:29because the things
25:30are quite uncertain.
25:30And this uncertainty
25:32is causing
25:33a lot of tension
25:35to the people
25:36because the line
25:37of control
25:37is there
25:38where the ceasefire
25:39violations have been
25:40happening since last
25:41especially the artillery guns
25:43have been firing
25:44the civilians
25:45firing upon the civilians
25:46in these areas.
25:47So there is tension.
25:49People are hoping
25:51and praying
25:51that the things
25:53settle down fast.
25:54There should be no escalation
25:55from Pakistan's side
25:56because if it happens
25:58then India
25:59will also respond
26:00forcefully
26:01and further
26:02that what we are calling
26:04it an escalation ladder
26:05will go high
26:06and severely impact
26:08especially the people
26:09who are on line of control
26:10because ceasefire violations
26:11are continuing
26:12from Pakistan
26:13and that too
26:14with full intensity.
26:16And they indeed are
26:18when we talk about
26:19the escalation ladder
26:20let's look at
26:21what's been happening
26:22ever since India
26:23struck terror central
26:25Pakistan's
26:26Punjab province
26:27at Mureet K
26:28at Bahawalpur
26:29in Sealcourt
26:30along with other locations
26:32in Pakistan
26:32occupied Jammu
26:33and Kashmir.
26:34I want to understand
26:35from you
26:36we struck multiple locations
26:38our missiles went through
26:39does that completely expose
26:41Pakistan's
26:42air defense system
26:43point one
26:44next day
26:45when they attempted
26:45to strike
26:46attempts failed
26:47when we hit back
26:49we took down
26:50some of their
26:50missile defense systems
26:51also struck
26:52places close to
26:54GHQ in Rawalpindi
26:55struck Lahore
26:56struck several other locations
26:58again when last night
26:59they tried
26:59government is
27:01we will hear officially
27:02from the government
27:02in just about a minute plus
27:04their attempts
27:05did not succeed
27:06though they tried
27:0726 different locations
27:08with 500 drones
27:10will they escalate?
27:12Are we going up
27:12the escalation ladder
27:13or is this some kind
27:14of a situation
27:15where they are
27:16saying they are
27:18fighting back
27:18it does appear
27:19to be a feeble
27:20fight back
27:21unless their real
27:22fight back
27:22happens only now?
27:23Well Gaurav
27:24you know
27:24a feeble fight back
27:26is quite possible
27:27because what has
27:27happened in the last
27:2848 hours
27:29has completely
27:30spooked
27:30the Pakistan military
27:32they did not
27:34war game
27:35the possibility
27:35of such swift
27:36Indian retaliation
27:37first Operation Sindur
27:39the first phase
27:39then the second phase
27:40of Operation Sindur
27:42and the government
27:42doesn't seem to be
27:43backing down
27:44in the face
27:44of Pakistan's threats
27:46and this is
27:47as we were discussing
27:48Gaurav
27:48this appears to be
27:49retribution
27:50for 25 years
27:52of Pakistan
27:53using
27:53instrument
27:54terrorism
27:55as an instrument
27:56of state policy
27:57they are not
27:58just being called out
27:59only for
28:00Pehalgaam Gaurav
28:01they are being called out
28:02for every single
28:03major sensational
28:04terror attack
28:05that the Pakistan
28:06military has carried
28:07out against
28:08Indian targets
28:09against Indian
28:10civilians
28:10massacring Indian
28:11civilians
28:12in Mumbai
28:13in Pehalgaam
28:15in Jammu
28:15and Kashmir
28:16in Gujarat
28:17in Uttar Pradesh
28:18all across India
28:19now is the time
28:20for payback
28:21and this is what
28:22has spooked
28:23the Pakistan military
28:24Gaurav
28:24what gives us
28:25the impression
28:25that the Pakistan
28:26army is spooked
28:27and it's not
28:28lulling us
28:29into
28:30thinking that
28:31they are not
28:31retaliating
28:32we relax
28:33and suddenly
28:34because Pakistan
28:35at least their
28:36army
28:36or their
28:37military jihad
28:37complex
28:38that's evil
28:39this morning
28:39there was an
28:40infiltration attempt
28:417 Jaisya Muhammad
28:42terrorists were killed
28:43at Samba
28:44so you know
28:45I don't think
28:46either you or I
28:47and remember
28:48Sandeep is from
28:50Mumbai
28:501993 blast
28:52257 people
28:53were killed
28:542006 blast
28:55200 people
28:56were killed
28:562611
28:57another 166
28:59people were killed
28:59Pakistani terror
29:01didn't stop
29:01even after that
29:02that David Coleman
29:03Hedley and Tawar
29:04Hussein Rana
29:04came back again
29:05because they wanted
29:06to bleed India
29:07again
29:07Zaweri Bazar
29:08was struck
29:09again
29:09again there were
29:10terror attacks
29:11not just in Mumbai
29:12but also a German
29:13bakery in Pune
29:14you recall
29:1557 people were killed
29:17in the Ahmedabad blast
29:17so you know
29:19I don't trust the
29:20Pakistanis
29:20I'm sure you don't
29:21trust the Pakistani
29:22military jihad complex
29:23what makes you think
29:24that they will not
29:25hit us
29:26or try to hit us
29:27again
29:27well if they try
29:28to hit us again
29:29Gaurav good luck
29:29to them
29:30because the response
29:31and retaliation
29:31is going to be
29:32instantaneous
29:33because if you look
29:34at it now
29:34Gaurav

37:04On the intervening night of 8th, 9th May 2025, Pakistan military carry out multiple violations of Indian airspace along the entire western border with an intent to target military infrastructure. Pakistan military also resorted to firing of heavy caliber weapons along the line of control.
37:31Along the international border and line of control, drone intrusions were attempted from Leh to Sir Creek at 36 locations with approximately 300 to 400 drones. Indian armed forces brought down a number of these drones using kinetic and non-kinetic means.
37:51The possible purpose of these large-scale aerial intrusions were to test the AD system and gather intelligence. Forensic examination of the drone debris is being undertaken. Preliminary reports suggest them to be of assist guard Songar drone of Turkey.
38:11Later in the night, an armed UAV of Pakistan attempted to target Bhatinda military station which was detected and neutralized. In response to the Pakistani attack, armed drones were launched at four air defense sites in Pakistan. One of the drones was able to destroy an AD radar.
38:33Pakistan also carried out artillery shelling across the line of control using heavy caliber artillery guns and armed drones at Sandhar, Uri, Poonch, Mender, Rajauri, Akhnur and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir area, which resulted in some losses and injuries to Indian army personnel.
38:55Pakistan army also suffered major losses in Indian retaliatory fire.
39:02Additionally, Pakistan's irresponsible behavior again came to fore. Pakistan did not close its civil airspace despite it launching a failed unprovoked drone and missile attack on 7th May at 8.30 hours in the evening.
39:19Pakistan is using civil airliners as a shield, knowing fully well that its attack on India would elicit a swift air defense response.
39:30This is not safe for the unsuspecting civil airliners, including the international flights which were flying near IB between India and Pakistan.
39:40The screenshot we just showed and we shall share with you. It shows the data of the application flight radar 24 during a high air defense alert situation in the Punjab sector.
39:52As you have seen, the airspace on the Indian side is absolutely devoid of civil air traffic due to our declared closure.
40:00However, there are civil airlines flying the air route between Karachi and Lahore. Amongst the other civil aircraft that you can see, we have highlighted an aircraft which is Airbus 320 of FlyNAS Aviation, which was originated from Dammam at 1750 hours and landed later at Lahore at 2110 hours in the night.
40:23Indian Air Force demonstrated considerable restraint in its response, thus ensuring safety of international civil carriers.

40:54These provocative and escalatory actions that were taken by Pakistan last night were targeted
41:19at Indian cities and civilian infrastructure in addition to some military targets.
41:27The Indian Armed Forces responded proportionately, adequately, and responsibly.
41:36What I want to underline is that the official and blatantly farcical denial of these attacks
41:58that Pakistan carried out by the Pakistani state machinery is yet another example of their duplicity
42:06and the new depths that they are plumbing in their quest for disinformation.
42:12The other point in the same vein is Pakistani claims that they did not target or attack any religious places.
42:25You would recall that yesterday I shared with you an incident related to the attack on a Gurdwara in Punsh.
42:33Instead of owning up to these attacks, Pakistan made the preposterous and outrageous claim
42:42that it was the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Air Force that was targeting cities like Amritsar
42:47and trying to put the blame on Pakistan.
42:50This is nothing but a desperate attempt by Pakistan to disown its acts of aggression,
42:59but it is also true to type in its effort to deceive and mislead the world.
43:06It will not succeed.
43:07The Gurdwara in Punsh in particular was attacked by Pakistan,
43:12Pakistan and some local members of the Sikh community, including Ragi of the Gurdwara,
43:18lost their lives in this incident as I shared yesterday.
43:22In addition, that we would attack our own cities is the kind of deranged fantasy
43:35that only the Pakistani state can come up with.
43:39Perhaps they do it because they are well-versed in such action as their history would show.
43:47The last point I wanted to make this evening is again this disinformation that is coming from Pakistan
43:57about India targeting the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara through a drone attack.
44:04This is again yet another blatant lie and part of Pakistan's disinformation campaign.
44:11As we saw in the Pahlgaam attack, Pakistan is again trying desperately to impart a communal hue to the situation
44:20with an intention to create discord.
44:24Again, we are not surprised.
44:27India's steadfast unity in itself is a challenge to Pakistan.
44:32Let me stop there.
44:34I have time only for a few questions and I'd be happy to try and answer them.
44:39First, I call Siddhan.
44:43Siddhan, please.
44:46Hi, sir. Siddhan from beyond.
44:47Sir, I only want to know from you the status of Kartal Singh, Kartalpur Corridor.
45:02Is it open or not?
45:03I think you are all aware of the situation along the entire India-Pakistan border
45:10and the areas around the line of control.
45:14In view of the existing security scenario, the services of the Kartalpur-Sahib corridor have been suspended
45:27till further directions.
45:30We'll update you as and when there is a change in the situation.
45:33Do you have a question here?
45:35Rishabh?
45:38Sir, good evening.
45:39You spoke about religious places being hit in Jango, there's another religious place,
45:45which is a caramelline nun church that has been hit.
45:50What do you have to say about religion?
45:51Actually, we do have some information about this extremely regrettable and condemnable incident.
46:03During heavy shelling across the line of control in the early morning of 7th May,
46:11a shell fired from Pakistan landed just behind the Christ school run by the Carmelites of
46:18Mary Immaculate, a congregation in Puj.
46:22Tragically, the shell fired from Pakistan hit the home of two students of the Christ school.
46:29Both students unfortunately lost their lives and their parents were severely injured.
46:35Another Pakistani shell struck a Christian convent of nuns belonging to the congregation of the
46:41mother of Carmel, damaging water tanks and destroying solar panel infrastructure.
46:46Several priests, nuns, school staff and local residents took refuge in an underground hall
46:54beneath the Christ school during the shelling by Pakistan.
46:58The school happened to be closed at the time, fortunately.
47:02Otherwise, more losses would have occurred.
47:05But again, we have seen the Pakistani side targeting and shelling places of worship with a particular
47:13design.
47:14This includes Gurdwaras, these convents and temples.
47:19This is a new law even for Pakistan.
47:27Mr. Pranayipa Agha, Amar Chassir.
47:30Mr. Pranayipa Agha, Amar Chassir.
47:31Mr. Pranayipa Agha, you have brought up on this podium, the IMF bailout and the
47:35IMF bailout treaty and the IMF water treaty.
47:37The other thing was brought up in Pakistan.
47:39After that, we have given up the information about how to take the Pakistan's invasion.
47:43Thank you very much.
48:13Thank you very much.
49:24Sidhan?
49:25Hi, sir.
49:26Sidhan from beyond.
49:30Sir, the actual affairs minister has spoken to many of his counterparts around the world.
49:36Yesterday he spoke to the U.S. Secretary of State, Mark Rubio.
49:39So what were the key areas of conversations during that call?
49:44Yes, the minister had a conversation with the U.S. Secretary of State.
49:49As you can imagine, the focus of discussions was the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the
49:59response that India mounted after that on the 7th of May.
50:05The Secretary of State shared his thoughts on these developments with the minister.
50:15The minister deeply appreciated the U.S.'s commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism.
50:22And he also underlined the targeted measures that India had taken in connection with Aup Sindur.
50:31We also – the minister also underlined that India would firmly counter any attempts at escalation from there.
50:39But in follow-up to that, as you are aware, there have been a number of other conversations.
50:45The minister had a conversation with the U.K. Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, today.
50:50There, too, the discussion centered around countering terrorism, for which there must be zero tolerance.
50:56And I understand just a short while ago the external affairs minister has also spoken to the foreign minister of Norway, Espen Bar Tayide,
51:04which was also focused on recent developments stemming from the Terrorist Act in Pahalgam.
51:11One last question, Subhi.
51:13Sir, thank you for the invitation from Bloomberg.
51:18Aung Sanji, India had struck Bahadur the other day, which is also connected with the murder of one of our journalists, Daniel Pahl.
51:28If you could give us an understanding of what exactly are the reports that you are getting?
51:33Well, you are right.
51:36Bahawalpur is the headquarters of the Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorist group that is proscribed by the United Nations.
51:47Its leader, Maulana Masood Azhar, is a proscribed individual.
51:52You brought up the connection with the tragic death or killing of Daniel Pahl of the Wall Street Journal.
52:07The Jaish-e-Muhammad was in some way directly or indirectly responsible for the death of Daniel Pahl.
52:21But the real connection is through Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the British-Pakistani jihadi who was held in India but was finally released in 2000.
52:43And he was the person who lured Daniel Pahl to his eventually leading to his murder.
52:54So these are all obviously connected figures, connected individuals, connected institutions, and the attack on Bahawalpur, on that facility of the Jaish-e-Muhammad in Bahawalpur, is I would imagine a fitting part of this unfortunate incident.
53:17Thank you all.
53:18Thank you sir.
53:19With that, we come to the closure of the discussion with you.
53:20Thank you very much.
53:21Big, big announcement made by India.
53:40The Ministry of External Affairs says Jaish-e-Muhammad was responsible for the death of journalist Daniel Pahl.
53:47India is now moving the International Monetary Fund, making its point clear to IMF, talking to board members, seeking that Pakistan should not get the next tranche of a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
54:03You just heard Vikram Misri.
54:04So let's get you both sides of the story.
54:07One side, the military response.
54:09Pakistan attempted to target multiple cities across our country, and not just military installations, but as Kharl Sophia Hureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said, they even tried to target civilian installations and civilians in different parts of our country.
54:28In response, India hit back, and India has targeted a radar in Pakistan.
54:36That's the information that is coming in.
54:38Big, big story.
54:39Diplomatically, India is reaching out to the International Monetary Fund that funds should not be made available to Pakistan.
54:47India's point has been that Pakistan actually uses those funds for spreading terror, not just in India, but across the world.
54:56The point that's also being made, journalist Daniel Pearl.
55:00He was doing his job.
55:02A Wall Street Journal journalist, Daniel Pearl.
55:06He was lured by Omar Shahid Sheikh.
55:09Kidnapped and killed.
55:12Remember the manner in which the Pakistani terrorists killed Hindus in Pehelgaam.
55:18Asked them their name.
55:20Asked them their religion.
55:22And then shot them at point blank range.
55:25This is their ideology.
55:27This is their mentality.
55:28This is not the first time they've done that.
55:30They did exactly the same with Daniel Pearl.
55:34They lured him.
55:36They got him down on his knees.
55:38They forced him to confess that he was Jewish.
55:42And then they slit his throat.
55:44That is how Jaishem Mohammed operates.
55:47That is that terrorist organization where Namaz-e-Janaza is attended by the core commander of Bahawalpur,
55:58top generals of the Pakistan army, including the army chief laser wreath,
56:03when terrorists are killed in the Indian missile strike.
56:06That is the mindless terrorism that comes from that radical Islamist state sponsor of terror.
56:12We've been victims.
56:13But even Daniel Pearl was a victim.
56:15And that aspect has come out once again.
56:17I want to quickly cut across to India Today's Foreign Affairs editor, Geeta Mohan,
56:21as we bring in Akshita Nand Gopal, my colleague, into this conversation.
56:25And Geeta, from Daniel Pearl's killing, brutal killing, to the Pehelgaam killing,
56:31it's that same Jaishem Mohammed, it's that same Pakistan state-sponsored radical Islamist terror,
56:38and that is why India is also moving that Pakistan should not get a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
56:46Well, that's absolutely right.
56:48The Indian side, again, making their position very clear.
56:51One, like we were saying in the morning itself,
56:54when we learned that there is going to be a briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs Gaurav,
56:58that they're going to dispel all the disinformation being spread,
57:02not just on social media, source-based information, but their ministers,
57:07the information minister himself sitting and blatantly fabricating truth,
57:13lying about whether if Pakistan carried out any action or not.
57:17They've come out and very clearly said that the action was carried out,
57:21and India's action was again, yet again, a retaliation to the action carried out by Pakistan.
57:30And not just in terms of messiahs.
57:33We're looking at drone intrusions that were attempted along the whole of LOC and IB,
57:39from Leh to Sir Creek, 36 locations, 300 to 400 drones, Gaurav.
57:44And that's the reason why the Indian side responded and took down one of their air defense systems.
57:53The purpose and intent also being spelt out by India that it was not just to cause damage,
57:59it was to test India's air defense systems and for intelligence gathering purposes.
58:06So this is escalation, and this is not a conventional escalation that we would or we could talk about in the past.
58:15The technology has changed, the ways and means have changed.
58:19So the things that Pakistan is employing, or for that matter,
58:23India is responding that are very different from anything that we've seen in the past.
58:29And therefore, the Indian side coming out and dispelling all the disinformation that was spread since last evening.
58:36So that detailed press conference there, Geetha, that detailed press conference by India to expose Pakistan's ways and what really happened last night.
