00:00Najib Razak's strongest backing for a royal pardon comes from the Indian community,
00:06with 62.2% of respondents supporting the former Prime Minister's bid,
00:12according to a survey by Think Tank Merdeka Center.
00:15The survey commissioned by Reform NGO Project Sama was carried out from March 27 to April 17.
00:23It involved 1,210 respondents across the 222 parliamentary constituencies.
00:29According to the survey, public opinion on Najib's bid for a pardon is divided along ethnic and political lines.
00:38While Najib enjoys majority support from various national voters and segments of the Malay and Muslim moving putra communities,
00:46the overall sentiment is against any move to pardon him.
00:50Meanwhile, Thomas Phan, who heads Project Sama, said 57.8% of respondents opposed Najib's pardon plea,
00:58citing betrayal of public trust, ongoing legal cases, and his refusal to admit guilt.
01:05Muslim Bumiputras formed the second highest group backing Najib's bid for a royal pardon at 50.5%, followed by Malay's at 43%.
01:15However, Najib's bid was overwhelmingly rejected by the Chinese community, with 95% opposed as well as by non-Muslim Bumiputras, 51% of whom rejected his pardon plea.
