00:00We are now seeing who I believe is the new Pope coming out with a gold stole, his white robes, red shawl, waving to the crowd. Huge cheers. Thousands and thousands of people thronging the square. This is Pope Leo XIV and he is waving to the crowd with his white people's skull hat.
00:30We can hear shouts and whistles, lots of people taking photos of the occasion and he'll address the faithful in Latin for his first address. He'll announce his name in papacy and hopefully give a few outlines of what he hopes to do.
00:50He looks very emotional. What a scene to look out and see all those people waiting.
00:57Well I wonder, and Clare will know better than me, I've just read he was only made a cardinal in 2023.
01:03That seems quite a big step up. I don't know how long the average cardinal is a cardinal before they take it.
01:09There's no time served, Matthew, when you know, you know, I think.
01:13We believe as Catholics that the Holy Spirit has a lot of influence in the voting procedure and indeed the making of the new Pope.
01:24Pope Leo XIV.
01:26Alexander, I don't know if you can still hear me, but what traditionally does the Pope say in these first moments? Will it all be in Latin?
01:42Yes, generally he'll announce his name. He'll make the address in Latin and then again, he sort of will set the tone.
01:50I think already by the election of this Pope, we know the sort of tone that the Church is going to take, but his speech will be eminently important as to the sort of beginning of his papacy and the sort of intent he has for the papacy.
02:05I mean, certainly it's a wonderful scene. I can actually hear the crowd as we're speaking over here, because again, I'm so close to the Vatican.
02:12It's just a wonderful historic moment. I mean, apart from the fact that our first American Pope, and certainly that's going to have implications on a global scale politically, especially because we're in, you know, the Trump era.
02:25So we'll see how relations between the Vatican and America will be.
02:31They haven't been great over the last couple of years, so hopefully that will improve.
02:35And, you know, we saw him step out and, of course, he was emotional. Who wouldn't be? What an incredible moment.
02:40I mean, the weight that is on his shoulders right now is immense.
02:45He has the hope of billions of people.
02:48And, you know, again, we're seeing scenes here in Rome.
02:51We're just looking at the scenes in St. Peter's Square, but you can imagine there'll be all over the world presently scenes exactly like this one.
02:58Well, we're going to listen in now, so any Latin speakers, take note.
03:01We're going to listen in now, so many people.
03:31We're just hearing the first words.
04:01As he continues, we'll provide a summary here in just a moment, as we listen to his words.
04:08He's asked everyone to, brothers, this is the peace of the risen Christ.
04:18A peace that is disarming and humble and persevering.
04:23It comes from God.
04:24God, God who loves all of us, without any limits and conditions.
04:31And we still have the sound in our ears of that weak voice of Pope Francis, who is blessing Rome here.
04:46We have that fresh in our minds, in our hearts, in our ears, hearing his voice, the Pope who is blessing Rome and giving his blessing to the world on that morning, on that day of Easter Sunday.
05:05Allow me to continue that same blessing.
05:13God loves everyone.
05:15God loves everyone.
05:16God loves all of us, in our hearts, in our hearts, in our hearts, in our hearts, in our hearts.
05:17We're all in the hands of God.

13:26And we just
13:56I just heard the blessing there, received the blessing there of Pope Rio XIV, and to the world, to the city, this most solemn blessing to all of us and all of you visiting and watching out there.
14:12What is interesting, he's smiling, and I found very touching the fact that he made reference to his former diocese in Peru and spoke to them in Spanish.
14:24You know, very, very touching moment, and now they are thanking them for how they accompanied him.
14:30And so, from this moment, I think we all accompany the new Holy Father with our prayers and support.
14:39And once again, he asked, just like Pope Francis did before, he asked for continued prayers.
14:45You know, this is a heavy task, as we all noted before, and he continues to ask all of us for prayers.
