Transcript
00:00It's almost feel like a big party almost, I imagine in some ways, doesn't it?
00:20Now the Italians are coming in.
00:26As we can hear the bands there, we see the Italian Carabinieri band that's coming into the square as well.
00:33So I imagine it's creating, it's adding to the festive atmosphere you're living there.
00:51All right, Sister Nina, thanks for giving us that update there,
00:54and we look forward to connecting with you there again when possible.
00:58We know how it's a little tough with the cell signal there,
01:00given all the people communicating live on their cell phones
01:04and the networks there being a bit saturated.
01:07But thank you, and...
01:09Wonderful.
01:19And, Sister Nina, by the way, this is your first experience of this time, isn't it?
01:31Your first conclave, and so it must be extra special for you.
01:35This will be extra special for you.
02:07wonderful
02:14all righty sister nina thank you so much for sharing that with us
02:18and uh we hope to touch base with you there uh shortly okay
02:23all right in the meantime good luck getting in the square there
02:26well and uh continuing as we mentioned before uh the atmosphere but also what we're seeing
02:36you see the bands father as you mentioned the now the italians as well coming in coming up the
02:42little the stairs that we often saw the popemobile drive up for general audiences and um shortly
02:50well shortly we're not sure exactly when but when the pope comes out there's a
02:56formula that is said in latin and for many of us we might not have studied latin in school i mean
03:02my latin is quite rusty so i don't know maybe uh father you know a bit more about what it's
03:08going to be said and for those who might not know what is the formula what is what is said
03:13well it says uh the uh the proto-deacon and it's uh cardinal monverti is the proto-deacon right now
03:20uh will come out and say um i have an announcement of great joy and uh and then he says
03:26we have a pope i saw some signs there and they didn't have the correct uh uh conjugation of
03:34papa but that's okay uh the fact is the news is and it's it's almost universal language now in terms
03:41of communicating the fact that we know and then after that uh he announces the name the name yes in
03:48latin and so um i'll tell you a funny story of that too a friend of mine was in the square when um
03:56when uh paul ii was uh uh elected and um uh he was standing uh he's from the u.s he was a student
04:05at the north american college and no it was when john paul ii was elected and he was standing next
04:11to an italian woman and they announced that um uh the the the pope was from polonia and this italian
04:20when he crossed herself and said grazie adeo da bologna
04:23da bologna that guy from bologna you can hear polonia in italian meaning polon
04:30yeah it's tricky if you don't know italian or latin it might be a bit confusing
04:36but no it's extra special and as you mentioned i mean i i remember watching with some of my colleagues
04:42here at the start of this week some of the compilations from the abemos poppings that we
04:47that we have video or audio of which is only in the last what just over a hundred years that we have
04:53video and it's been really interesting because whether you know latin or not you know that phrase
04:58and you know what it means and so it's a big signal to a new chapter in the church and i'm thinking that
05:03the last announcement was by cardinal jean-louis toron whom i worked with a great deal and and he
05:09made that announcement and it was so good he's gone home to heaven but i'm sure he's now rejoicing
05:15that's right i remember him very well when he announced i introduced pope francis and i remember
05:22even hearing his name i was running and i looked it up very quickly because you know as always it's a
05:27surprise right surprise and and you don't know like because we have such a a list of people and
05:33as we've said throughout this entire smoke watch um that it's the holy spirit that guides the decision
05:39and so we don't know until that moment here we see a formation of the italian uh military bands you
05:46know wow uh and they and then of course the uh gendarmes uh the vatican uh gendarmerie their own band
05:55and then we have the swiss guards all in position there we see the uh usually uh at uh a point uh
06:02after the pope appears so there'll be a mutual salute of both national and here's um the uh the
06:08retired um papal preacher papal preacher and also then there's cardinal raniero canta la messa
06:14looking at his phone there we see technology and then capuchin and also cardinal uh sean
06:25so here we are the bands are playing introduction here to the vatican alpha oh no the italian
06:33that's true the hymns the the song will be good the songs will be going on until we hear that famous
06:40line of everyone swap them in the we see the pope come out on the balcony
06:54so
07:14so
08:16And the Italian National Anthem played a mutual salute between the two groups of bands.
08:24And now the mutual salute and greeting of both.
08:29This is just like when we see it at Easter and at Christmas.
08:32During the Urbiotobi when Pope Francis, or when the Pope, sorry, gives his blessing to the city and to the world.
08:42And before that his Christmas or Easter message.
08:45So the bands are lined up there as we await the curtains to be pulled back there from the central loggia of St. Peter's Isillac.
08:56And even though the Holy See is a separate country, it's important for Italy to be involved in this too.
09:06Because he's also the Bishop of Rome.
09:08So his flock is in Rome as well.
