00:00A meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is clearly on the radar, the Kremlin spokesperson said.
00:07But as Moscow seems to be sending the signals about its willingness to meet the U.S. president, what is the response from Washington?
00:15Former U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations told Euronews Donald Trump would want to meet Putin as well, but under certain conditions.
00:25I do think he would like to meet Putin, but after there's a ceasefire.
00:30He wants to end the war, and then he would like to rebuild a relationship with Russia.
00:36He thinks that you could reintegrate Russia into a global economy, you could do business deals with Russia, but Putin has to stop the war first.
00:45And as Putin is not doing that, the prospects for a Trump-Putin meeting are looking farther and farther away.
00:53Walker served as the U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations in 2017 to 2019, when Putin and Trump had their last meetings in Helsinki, Finland, and then at the G20 in Osaka, in Japan.
01:07At the start of his second term, Donald Trump said he was going to meet Russian president very quickly after taking office.
01:13I think what Putin does, though, is he is trying to play to the ego of President Trump by saying, OK, we can sit down man to man, we can work this out.
01:23And I think President Trump, in some ways, he sees himself as a strong figure able to do that, but he is not happy with Putin failing to end the war.
01:34He told Euronews there has consequently been a significant change of heart in Washington regarding Putin's willingness to halt his war against Ukraine, and the dynamic has changed between the U.S. and Ukraine.
01:51It is clear that the U.S. and Ukraine are in alignment in calling for a full ceasefire for 30 days, and that's a stepping stone to a permanent ceasefire.
02:01And Putin is mocking that. Instead of 30 days, he said 30 hours.
02:07And now he's come and proposed three days. He's not serious about actually stopping the fighting.
02:13And you do pick up the sense now in Washington that people are recognizing that and calling Putin out, if you will, saying that Russia is not, they're demanding too much and they are not accepting a ceasefire.
