Many faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square seemed unsurprised to witness black smoke on first day of Conclave to elect a new pope.

The smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday, signaling that no pope had been elected as 133 cardinals opened the secretive, centuries-old ritual to choose a new leader of the Catholic Church.

00:00We were not surprised by the black smoke, we expected black smoke tonight, but we expected
00:29a lot earlier.
00:30At the last conclave, the smoke appeared around 7.30 in the evening.
00:35This was an hour and a half later.
00:37It's a very intense prayer that the one who comes after him continues with the same openness,
00:46same love.
00:47I'm going to miss him, but this is it, we just have to pray and ask for guidance, and hopefully
00:58somebody 10, 20 years into, you know, the service gives us the same strength and makes a very
01:07solid Catholic church.
