Those little jars might seem to last forever, but just like any ingredient, they degrade over time, and that greatly affects the impact they have on our cooking.

00:00When do spices expire? The answer is not as straightforward as you might think.
00:04Spices don't actually go bad, but they do lose their potency over time. Once a
00:10spice is ground, it loses its flavor much faster. Ways to tell if your spices are
00:16a little past their prime and you should think about replacing them. Rub them
00:20between your fingers and take a sniff. If you can't smell anything, it's probably
00:25time to replace them. Buying your spices whole and grinding them in small
00:30amounts when you want to use them is a great option. If that doesn't work for
00:34you, buy them ground, but buy small amounts, small jars, so that you can use
00:40them before they go past their prime. To preserve your spices freshness for as
00:45long as possible, store in a cool dry place.
