As the conclave begins in the Vatican, a group of women protest by releasing pink smoke to demand a greater role for women in the Catholic Church. "We are saying to the cardinals, you cannot keep ignoring fifty percent of the catholic population", says one protester, Miriam Duignan.

00:00A male-only conclate is a celebration of patriarchy and a betrayal.
00:19We are saying to the Cardinals, you cannot keep ignoring 50% of the Catholic population.
00:24You cannot go into a locked room and discuss the future of the church without half of the church.
00:31And so the very important message that we are sending is that they need to listen to women
00:36and they need to include women in more meaningful ways,
00:39and whoever they elect needs to be brave enough to properly tackle that question of women's inclusion,
00:45because so far it has not been, even by Pope Francis.
00:49Smoke out sexism!
00:51A woman's place is in the conclave.
00:54Smoke out sexism!
00:56A male-only conclave is a celebration of patriarchy and a betrayal of the synodal process.
01:02Smoke out sexism!
01:05I'm gonna let it shine.
01:09In ministry, leadership, and decision-making.
01:12So while the world may wait for white smoke or black smoke,
01:16we send up pink smoke as our hope that the church may someday welcome women as equals.
01:21Smoke can also be used as a distress signal.
01:24And so we are calling this also, the church is in crisis.
01:27The injustice of women, of their exclusion from ordained ministry,
01:31and high levels of decision-making is a crisis.
01:34And so our smoke is also a call out to the church to change quickly,
01:38and to really open its doors to women.
01:41What are you hoping if you would meet a church?
01:44We are setting up pink smoke over inside that Sistine Chapel,
01:49with no access to their social media on their phones.
