00:00It is official.
00:02The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back one of their most prized offensive weapons,
00:07a move that needed to happen, but the details might honestly surprise you.
00:11We'll talk about all that and what it means for the future.
00:14Also, another team in the NFC East makes a splash move.
00:18Could it increase their chances of contending with the birds?
00:21We'll get into all of it and more.
00:23Welcome into A to Z Philly.
00:24I'm R.B.

00:28Appreciate everybody.
00:29Stan tapped in with us, and you ever just get that one alert on your phone, that big
00:33piece of news, and it just brightens up your whole day, just puts a smile on your face.
00:38That is how I feel right now.
00:40I knew it was going to happen deep in my gut.
00:42I knew we were going to get this news, but I was still a little bit concerned, and now
00:47it is finally official here on May 7th.
00:50The Eagles and Dallas Goddard have agreed to a rework deal for this season.
00:55Mike Garofalo puts this out first by Jeff McLean.
00:58The team had trade offers for Dallas Goddard during the draft.
01:01He was in the loop, decided to remain with the team, and selflessly restructured to try
01:07running it back.
01:08Now, I have multiple thoughts off the bat, but I want to read out some more of the details
01:12here.
01:13Mike Garofalo says the Eagles had to allocate their money across the roster so they entertained
01:18trade offers for Goddard, though they always kept the door open for his return.
01:23The coaches wanted him back.
01:25Goddard preferred to stay in Philly over every other possible destination that was presented.
01:31Now, first and foremost, from the Eagles side of it, credit to Howie Roseman.
01:36They asked him, they asked Nick Suriani about this multiple times at the Combine, at the
01:41draft, all that stuff.
01:42And Howie Roseman reiterated that we like Dallas Goddard.
01:46As of right now, he's on the roster.
01:48We're not going to put his business out in the public space, which I think is the perfect
01:52way to handle it.
01:53All they had was praise for him, what he's done.
01:55We'll talk about that as well.
01:57But I want to look at it from the opposite aspect right now.
02:00Dallas Goddard, it says, preferred to stay in Philly and was willing to do a rework deal.
02:06You're a guy that's coming off of a Super Bowl championship.
02:09You're a guy that's coming off a pretty good playoff run.
02:12You've always been a big game player, even though you may not be that durable.
02:16And we heard even in some of those mic'd up clips, just how appreciative he was for the
02:20city of Philadelphia, and you're willing to take maybe less money.
02:24We'll talk about what that could look like.
02:25But you're willing to, let's just say, rework your deal for the benefit of the team, knowing
02:31what the Eagles have done this offseason, guys that they've had to trade, knowing the
02:36guys that they're going to have to pay in the future, and you being able to come off
02:40that high horse and being able to take a step down and realize where you're at in your
02:44career, and realize that not only is this the best possible route for you to maybe get
02:49paid in the future, but also your best possible route to win again is just incredible.
02:54And it shows the type of character from a guy like Dallas Goddard.
02:58I know I love Dallas Goddard, but I like him even more.
03:01This is a big, big decision for him.
03:04And they were open, right?
03:05They had trade offers on the table during the draft.
03:08We knew they would.
03:09But ladies and gentlemen, when the Eagles went out there and they ended up with 10 draft selections,
03:14and they did not pick any tight ends, I knew that he was coming back to Philadelphia.
03:20I didn't know the details, but I knew it would have to happen.
03:22That was the biggest question going into the draft.
03:25We talked about it a lot, and the Eagles had to find a way to make it happen.
03:29And you knew Howie Roseman, the cap wizard, was going to do it, and he did it.
03:33And now we can squash all the business stuff.
03:36Dallas Goddard is back in Philly, and the Eagles really, really need this guy.
03:40So I'm so happy that he's back.
03:42He's such an integral part of this team.
03:43We've talked about how he is the security blanket for Jalen Hurts.
03:48And if you told me that the Eagles really wanted to contend, and they were going to bring in a rookie tight end or something like that,
03:53it just didn't feel right.
03:54So shout out to Dallas Goddard.
03:56In addition to that, Zach Berman says Goddard was on the trade market this offseason, right?
04:00That's no question right now.
04:02The question was about the cash.
04:04The Eagles were not prepared to pay him $14.25 million in cash.
04:08That was the last year of this current deal.
04:11We know Dallas Goddard wanted a reworked contract.
04:13Eagles didn't want to pay him that figure.
04:14The question was not about Goddard as a player.
04:17They have come to a compromise.
04:19This is big for the Eagles.
04:20It seemed after the draft, it was the best football situation for Goddard.
04:24And I think that's the other part of it as well.
04:26Obviously, Goddard wanted to be back.
04:27But let's also not neglect the fact that the Colts drafted a tight end.
04:31The Bears drafted a tight end.
04:33The Giants were inquiring about Goddard.
04:35Who the heck wants to go to the Giants?
04:37And Goddard looked around and he said, look, I want to be in Philly, but also I don't want
04:41to go somewhere else where I'm not even going to get paid anyway.
04:44Why would I go to a garbage organization when I can try to run it back and win another championship?
04:49And I think that takes a lot of cognizance on the end of Dallas Goddard.
04:53And, you know, his agent probably said the same thing.
04:56This is the best chance for you to go out, run it back and try to get paid again next
05:00offseason or whenever it may come around.
05:03ESP with some quick thoughts on the Goddard thing.
05:06He says the two sides were very close to breaking it up.
05:09It worked out.
05:10This is unexpected, but a good outcome.
05:13Eagles are better with Goddard.
05:14I agree with that Goddard staying is an overall positive for him, not the ideal outcome, but
05:20definitely, you know, what was needed for both of these sides.
05:24The tight end depth chart is crowded.
05:26Goddard Calcaterra Bryant Granson and EJ Jenkins.
05:29Like I said, Bryant Granson, EJ Jenkins, these guys were not capable of being a tight end one.
05:35Goddard is.
05:35We know that he just needs to stay healthy.
05:38And I like this comparison here to the Josh Sweat situation.
05:41Maybe he will cash out big next offseason.
05:44The difference is Sweat got to be the number one edge on the Eagles.
05:47Goddard will remain far down the totem pole on offense, which I think is a big point.
05:51And it honestly takes me to a comparison that I was just looking up before this.
05:57Dallas Goddard and Zach Ertz, right?
05:58I've mentioned this multiple times, but Dallas Goddard has played seven seasons with the Philadelphia
06:03Eagles.
06:04Couple of those.
06:04He was kind of the number two to Zach Ertz.
06:07Zach Ertz played eight and a half seasons with the Eagles.
06:09And you just look at the comparisons with these guys.
06:13This is why the Eagles were never going to trade Dallas Goddard because you look at this
06:17and their method is always draft and develop, right?
06:20What the Eagles will probably do is bring in a young tight end next year in the draft and
06:25they'll let him develop and they'll let him play with Dallas Goddard.
06:27Or maybe they'll go trade for a young one like a Michael Mayer or someone like that.
06:31Or maybe they'll use one of the guys on the roster and let them nurture behind Dallas
06:35Goddard, right?
06:36And then next offseason or whatever it is, they'll get rid of Goddard and they'll have
06:40a guy who's more so accustomed and ready to step into that role.
06:44The Eagles have had to make some tough decisions and I don't think it's necessarily fair to
06:48compare these two careers because Zach Ertz has probably had a better peak.
06:52I don't think Dallas Goddard's numbers are too far off from Zach Ertz, but like ESP said,
06:57the roles are different.
06:59You know, if Zach Ertz had to play with AJ Brown and Devontae Smith, he might not be
07:03the Zach Ertz that we remember.
07:05So I think people need to really take a step back and realize how good Dallas Goddard is.
07:10Like when he was coming up the first, you know, few years, the reason the Eagles were willing
07:15to move forward with him is because of his talent level, right?
07:18His potential.
07:20It's just his durability.
07:21He has to stay on the field.
07:22But when push comes to shove, he's played in the two Super Bowls.
07:26He's been there in the playoffs.
07:27He's a big game playoff player.
07:29He's got some of the best playoff numbers for the Eagles in their history.
07:33And when they need him to show up, he does.
07:36So I'm really happy that this guy's back and, you know, he's not going to always have the
07:40best numbers, but he's a very vital integral part of this offense.
07:44That is what we are trying to convey here.
07:47Here's the first look at the Eagles projected offense.
07:50Jalen Hurts, Saquon Dallas Goddard, AJ Devante, Jahan Dotson, and the whole offensive line with
07:55Tyler Steen in place of Mekhi Becton.
07:57So look, man, Howie Roseman does it again.
08:00Just more cap wizardry and just more mastery by Howie Roseman being able to keep Dallas
08:06Goddard here.
08:07I'm interested to see how the deal works out.
08:09So my guess is that it'll probably be a little bit less in cash, more in a signing bonus
08:15or avoidable years and stretched out over the course of two to three years.
08:18But on the back end, you know, it's probably not guaranteed.
08:22And somehow, some way Goddard will get his money, but it's not going to be conventional.
08:26And that is for Howie Roseman to figure out, but it will lessen the cap hit this year.
08:32And that is what they were trying to do.
08:33It's why they traded guys like CJ Garner Johnson as well.
08:36And I'm so happy that Dallas Goddard's back.
08:38Now, another big move of the day that came early in the morning was the Dallas Cowboys
08:43trading for George Pickens.
08:45Only three years in the NFL, he has already become one of the best wide receivers, very
08:50talented player, but in pure Cowboy fashion, he is a hothead, right?
08:55He's had incidents.
08:56He's had moments where you're like, do we really want to deal with this guy?
09:00And that's why it makes so much sense for the Cowboys to trade for him.
09:03Now, is this a good trade talent wise for the Cowboys?
09:06Yeah, they haven't done jack squat all season.
09:09They stink.
09:10But the Cowboys had a good draft.
09:12Now they bring in a good player and they're going to have to try to control his temper right
09:17now.
09:17The Steelers receive a third round and a fifth round pick.
09:20Cowboys receive George Pickens and a sixth round pick.
09:23Why did they do this?
09:24Because of the contract when the Steelers traded for DK Metcalf, it's interesting.
09:29You know, they trade for him.
09:30They pay him.
09:31And George Pickens is probably going, hey, like I want to deal to, you know, I've given
09:35a lot to this organization and I want to be rewarded as well.
09:39I guess the Steelers didn't want to go through with that.
09:41Maybe it's because of his personality, his attitude, whatever it is.
09:44His play on the field is really good.
09:45But again, you have to control them.
09:47Adam Schefter says that Pickens is heading into the last year of his contract.
09:50Wants a new deal, but we get another report here from Clarence Hill that says new Cowboys
09:56wide receiver George Pickens is not looking to do one.
09:59He wants to show he's a top guy this year.
10:01And that just kind of makes me chuckle a bit because how Cowboys would it be for Pickens
10:06to play out this year?
10:07And then Jerry Jones has another standoff like he did with CeeDee Lamb and then he doesn't
10:12pay George Pickens and then he just walks after maybe a pretty good year.
10:15I could see that happening for sure.
10:17Does this scare me in terms of the Cowboys being contenders?
10:20No, I think it makes them better.
10:22Maybe you'll add a win or two to their team.
10:24I still think they're a seven or eight win team.
10:26They haven't done enough in the margins.
10:28Dak Prescott still has shown us who he is.
10:31He's not really healthy at all.
10:32And when he is, he just does not come up bright in the big moments.
10:36And I don't think George Pickens is going to change that.
10:39Matter of fact, I think it could actually add some more turmoil to that locker room if things
10:44start to go south.
10:45So that's my overall take on it.
10:46The Eagles run this division.
10:48The Eagles run the NFC.
10:49They just got back a major weapon.
10:51And ladies and gentlemen, the Eagles are now full-fledged, ready, packed, and good to
10:57go.
10:57And they're going to run this thing back, man.
10:59They're going to try to go on another run.
11:01But not only that, Howie Roseman has extended the window for the next four to five years
11:06by the moves he's made this offseason.
11:08Some of the most brilliant GM work I've ever seen.
11:10The only move I don't like is the Gardner-Johnson one, but maybe Gardner-Johnson came to them
11:15and said, I want to get paid.
11:16And they said, sorry, we can't do it.
11:18Whereas a guy like Dallas Goddard was willing to take a hit for the team, rework his deal
11:22this year, and put the team first and run it back to try to win another Super Bowl.
11:27That's my take on this.
11:28Give me your thoughts down below.
11:29What do you think about this deal?
11:30Are you happy that Dallas Goddard is back?
11:32What do they do in the future?
11:34Give me all your thoughts.
11:35Appreciate everybody for tapping in.
