00:00Why gender-based violence is going underreported in the EU.
00:08One in three women in the EU has experienced physical or sexual violence during their lifetime.
00:14However, only 13.9% report the incident to the police.
00:19Experts suggest that many cases of gender-based violence may remain hidden in the data
00:25if not separated down into factors such as sex, age or the relationship with the perpetrator.
00:31In EU countries that provide sex-disaggregated data,
00:34women account for 85% of victims of intimate partner violence in 12 member states,
00:4076% of victims of domestic violence in 20 member states
00:45and 47% of victims of violence from any perpetrator in 13 member states.
00:51The lack of disaggregated data also does not show the fact that many incidents of violence
00:57are not isolated occurrences.
00:59In the EU, 14.6% of women have experienced physical violence or threats
01:05and or sexual violence from an intimate partner more than once in their lifetime,
01:10while only 3.5% experienced it as a single incident.
01:14Starting in 2027, it will be mandatory for member states to collect data on an annual basis
01:21based on common standards.
01:23This initiative aims to lead to more effective policies and interventions
01:26to combat these issues and support victims.
