00:00A very exciting way to start the day and it comes from our very own Cowboys insider Bobby Belt.
00:06We got the text message late last night. We were all asleep while he was partying
00:11with Jelly Roll and Post Malone. Then Bobby put it out this morning that George Pickens
00:17is or is about to be a Dallas Cowboy. Adam Schefter, Jordan Schultz, Tom Pellicero,
00:25Ian Rappaport just said Bobby Belt first to be on it. Bobby, take us inside the story.
00:31Yeah, so the Cowboys have been working on receiver trades for the last couple days.
00:36They've called about a couple different guys and in the last two days,
00:40they really started focusing on Pickens and they ended up last night.
00:45It sounded like it was getting really close for them and so I think it's getting finalized today,
00:49but yeah, this is something that is agreed upon I think right now and they'll just get it finalized
00:53with the league office probably this morning and get all the compensation swap done.
00:57Can you say other names that they were thinking about?
01:01Yeah, I think they called on Rashad Bateman in Baltimore and I think they were calling about
01:06a lot of different players, but I think Bateman and Pickens were the two that they were really looking at.
01:10Cost, I think, settled them on Pickens, but because I mean if you go and get Bateman,
01:16he's already got a contract extension. You have to rework things.
01:19You have to flip switches to make his money work, whereas Pickens is still on a rookie deal.
01:24They acquire him and they don't have to really do anything with his money and also I think
01:28what they're going to have to give up is probably not going to match what they would have had to have
01:33given up for Bateman, which I think you're probably looking at a day two or really early day three
01:41pick for Pickens is what the compensation is probably what you're looking at here.
01:45So that's the breaking news. George Pickens is about to be a Dallas Cowboy.
01:50RJ Choppy, your thoughts?
01:54I have like this. They need a number two.
01:57Like they needed a number two wide receiver and he's not a number one.
02:00This is exactly, I think, where he where he is, where he would be at his best is a number two.
02:06This was like one of the things they need to do. It's youth, too.
02:09You know, they didn't go down the old man well with Amari Cooper.
02:12They didn't go down the old man well with a Brandy Cook's 2.0.
02:17Keenan Allen. Was he one of the names?
02:18So they didn't go down that old man well.
02:20I like the process. I like the plan here.
02:22Go get somebody youthful.
02:24Well, you know, you have capital to use and use it.
02:27Well, you haven't mentioned the big part of the problem, which is all the drama and all the headache.
02:33I love drama. I love headache.
02:34I usually love other people's drama.
02:36But talent, talent, check, 24 years old, check, number two, check, headache, big fat X.
02:46Yeah. And it's the whole if Mike Tomlin can't can't do anything to keep you kind of on a straight and narrow pathway, who can?
02:58You know, Mike and Mike is is a he's he seems to be like just one of these really great motivators.
03:04I think he's the best motivator in the NFL as a coach.
03:06And if he can't get you to kind of see the plan that who can certainly be more difficult for a rookie head coach under normal circumstances, I'm saying no.
03:18I'm out. Ian has the compensation. It's a trade centered on a third rounder going from Dallas and then a late round pick swap.
03:28So Dallas is trading a third and a late round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Pickens and a late round pick third and a late for Pickens.
03:37I think I think I think Baltimore wanted a second for Bateman.
03:41Yeah, well, no.
03:42No. So it's a second versus a third and having to move money around as opposed to not.
03:48But it's also a guy who needs a contract in Pickens, who's also represented by what's his name?
03:53Oh, David Muligata.
03:56Oh, well, let me ask this.
03:58Why didn't this just take place during the draft?
04:02I, you know, I had heard Brian brought us and G bag play this out.
04:06Well, I don't I think this wasn't one of their fights, right?
04:09That was about Booker.
04:11Yeah, that was about the first round pick.
04:13I mean, Dawson obviously wanted a wide out, but yeah.
04:16Why didn't this just play out during the draft?
04:20I think that they were brought us and said he would pull the trigger on Pickens in that moment.
04:27If we were talking about a third or a fourth, I think they I think they picked up the phone on all these guys initially during draft week or leading up to the draft.
04:35And I think what happened was they wanted to see what would potentially fall to them in the draft.
04:39They wanted McMillan.
04:41If they get McMillan at eight, they don't do this.
04:43Right.
04:44But they didn't get him.
04:45They get Booker instead.
04:46They get somebody in the second or third.
04:48They don't do.
04:48Yeah.
04:49And so I think what happened was they got through that and then they went, all right, let's really dig in on these receivers.
04:53Now that we get out of the draft, we know we're not getting that.
04:55And so I think they started calling around, look for the best possible bang for their buck.
04:59And a third and a pick swap for Pickens is is pretty good value if if he's all straight off the field, which again, is on the field.
05:12There's a lot of talk already about and I saw it already like so much for culture.
05:16I guess shot.
05:17He lied so much for culture.
05:19I think it's a very good point.
05:21It is.
05:21It's a fair point to bring up.
05:23But I think it's also from the Cowboys perspective, they would say and look, I don't think they're 100 percent comfortable with everything that's in George Pickens background in terms of the way that he's been the things that he's had happen in Pittsburgh.
05:37But I think a big part of it for them is there also is a point where you're building culture, but you can't just exclude everybody who might kind of be a diva or who might be me focused.
05:51Yeah. And at some point, you got to say, all right, well, this is the test of the cultures.
05:56Can you change?
05:57Can you change that player instead of that player coming in and changing the culture?
06:00They've done a lot to establish it across the board.
06:02You're not going to have 53 Boy Scouts.
06:04It's not going to happen.
06:05And so I think at some point they realize.
06:08Yeah. And I think at some point you got to investigate and go.
06:10All right.
06:10Who who do we think can can get there?
06:16Who do we think can be part of a good culture?
06:17Even if they're not now, who do we think can be changed over to that?
06:20There was a time Brandon Marshall was thought of as a really bad culture guy.
06:23There was a time where Tyron Matthews was thought of as a really bad culture guy.
06:26And they both shifted over time.
06:28So I think that for them, they look at it and go.
06:31All right.
06:31We got to just believe that Pickens is part of a guy like we can ingratiate into our culture rather than him coming in here and poisoning a well.
06:37Yeah. I mean, look, he's obviously the talent is there.
06:40I don't know.
06:41I don't have a problem with them going and using capital to get somebody.
06:44You know, now, could you say that these, you know, a third round pick could be more valuable next year?
06:52You know, you know, in the draft where this team is still, I believe, not ready to compete for a championship.
06:58So they need the bodies.
07:00They need the picks.
07:01They're actually they're getting the players.
07:02That's good.
07:03The other question you got to ask, why would Pittsburgh do this?
07:05Mike Tomlin's on the hot seat.
07:07Like make whatever you want to say.
07:08He is on the hot seat.
07:09So half of Pittsburgh, maybe more want him out the fans.
07:14So why would he reduce his team?
07:18Well, they got DK.
07:19They do have DK, but they're probably going to bring in Aaron Rodgers.
07:23You would not think that Aaron Rodgers would want to get rid of a weapon.
07:26What's their wide receiver room look like?
07:29They have DK Pickens is gone and Robert Woods.
07:34I think they just picked up Robert Woods late.
07:37He's 40.
07:38Yeah, he's old.
07:39He's old.
07:40He's he's 33.
07:41Look, I'm I'm begrudgingly in on this.
07:46Oh, they're interesting.
07:48I wanted juice.
07:49You got juice.
07:50I wanted a roll of the dice.
07:52You did roll the dice.
07:54Now, can you argue we're going to judge their second and third round picks and their first round pick?
08:00We're going to judge their first.
08:01I am their first, their second and third against George Pickens.
08:04I hope your second round pick.
08:06I hope your third round pick play out versus getting a receiver there and not having this headache and whatever this future contract extension comes with.
08:16Now, what about the money?
08:17You know, we got to break all those things down.
08:19We just can't throw out fantasy land trades.
08:22Spotrack has some of these numbers as we are looking at something very cheap to start off with.
08:29The 24 year old brings over a one year, three point six million dollar deal to Dallas carrying a four year one oh two valuation in our system.
08:40So that's twenty five a year.
08:42A.P.Y.
08:42Is that just what they're projecting of what his next contract is going to be, Bob?
08:46Because right now it's just one for three and a half.
08:49Uh, no, he's at three and a half because it's the back end of his, uh, his rookie deal.
08:53Yeah, I know that.
08:53No, that's what he's at right now.
08:55So this four for one oh two is their next contract projection for him.
09:00So basically what I'm saying is.
09:01Oh, yeah, yeah.
09:02That's that's what they're targeting.
09:03That's what they believe.
09:04So you're trading a third round pick for him on a one year deal.
09:09Ninety nine percent of the time in these situations.
09:11We we need that to come with an extension.
09:14I have and I have not asked around like I've poked around a little bit.
09:18I've not gotten a firm answer yet.
09:19I don't know that this is coming with an idea that they're going to extend him for sure.
09:22Because otherwise you make this move, choppy, when you're on the doorstep, not when you're, in my opinion, and what you just said earlier, where the Cowboys are.
09:32So are you saying you are in the George Pickens business long term?
09:36I don't believe that you can trade a third round pick for a guy who you are going to have for two years.
09:45I don't I don't believe a team would wisely or willingly do that.
09:51Look, I think if you're if you're Kansas City or Buffalo.
09:56Yeah, that's a different story.
09:58How good do you expect them to be this year with Pickens?
10:01Roughly.
10:02Ten.
10:03Yeah, I think tens are still because they're a ceiling with Pickens.
10:06I think Pickens is a difference maker that puts theirs.
10:09I don't know that they reach it, but their ceiling definitely to me is 12 win team now like that.
10:13That's a team that can win 12 games now schedule, though.
10:16Yeah, yeah.
10:16Talent.
10:17Their talent level might be.
10:18No schedules.
10:19Dude, Pickens.
10:20Pickens is a one.
10:21Pickens is a one.
10:22He's not a one in any.
10:24What?
10:24What?
10:24Both.
10:25No.
10:25Pickens is 100 percent a one.
10:27OK, is he a one in the situation in the case that he's not a Jamar one?
10:32No, he's not a Jamar one.
10:33That's a one.
10:34No.
10:34OK, if you're talking about 32 ones.
10:36No, but this is the same BS argument about Patrick Mahomes is the only number one quarterback.
10:41No, there's tears, but he is 100 percent a team's number one.
10:46That is somebody who can function as a one and make a pro one.
10:48It's like saying that just because you're the game one starter for a baseball team that you're an ace.
10:54You're not an ace.
10:55Well, it's also if you're saying Jamar is number one, then that's also like saying Garrett Cole is like the only standard for an ace.
11:02So there's three of them.
11:03There's more than three aces.
11:04Let's get to some of the numbers.
11:06By the way, the breaking news, Bobby Belt first on it as our Cowboys insider.
11:11If you follow him on social media, you'll know that that is the reality of it.
11:15George Pickens is a Dallas Cowboy.
11:18It's a third round pick given up.
11:20And then we'll get some later pick swaps and compensation.
11:24Three years in the league for Pickens.
11:2652 catches for 8-0-1-4 his first year at 15 and a half a catch.
11:31Year two was 63 for 11-40 and five touchdowns.
11:3718 yards a catch.
11:39And then last year in 14 games, he had played 17 games in each of his previous two seasons.
11:45Last year, he was 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns.
11:51With Justin Fields and rotating Russell Wilson throwing the football to him during his career.
11:56My fear in this, if there was two years left, that would feel like the perfect sweet spot for me.
12:02But are you signing up long term with this guy?
12:06Like, so my two hiccups on this are you're not knocking on a championship for this to be your final over-the-top move where I could justify a third rounder for one year.
12:17And then afterwards, I mean, I don't want to be in the George Pickens business long term unless Dak Prescott and Brian Schottenheimer have these magical powers that are, like, if I'm Dak, man, I'm getting a, what was that drink he had when he was hurt that he just had nine?
12:35Was it iced teas lined up?
12:36Yeah, the, what were they, the golden leaf or whatever?
12:39I'd get a Tylenol sponsorship lined up if I was Dak Prescott deal with not only him but Lamb.
12:44Because Lamb can have his moments.
12:45CD looks like he's endorsing this because overnight, he was sitting there tweeting out memes, waving, like, hello, hey, we're here.
12:55So it looks like CD Lamb knew this was happening and that he is on board.
12:59Those are my two hiccups.
13:01But right now, I need a juice.
13:03I need a roll of the dice.
13:04You need a number two wide receiver.
13:06So I'm begrudgingly in.
13:08It makes CD's life easier.
13:09No doubt.
13:10CD makes Pickens' life easier, too.
13:12No, that's true.
13:13Because Pickens has been the attention focus in Pittsburgh.
