00:00Frederick Merz has become Germany's new chancellor after the Parliament had to
00:12hold a second vote as the first one did not achieve an absolute majority.
00:16With only a few hours left for the conclave the clergy and lady have taken the oath of secrecy
00:27at the Pauline Chapel of the Vatican City and Panamanian workers are entering the
00:35third week of strike-off against the policies of President José Raúl Molino.
00:46Hello and welcome to From the South I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in
00:50Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:57Frederick Merz has become Germany's new chancellor after the Parliament had to hold a second
01:09vote as the first one did not achieve an absolute majority. Germany's Parliament held a second
01:15vote over Merz's chancellor bid after he suffered a humiliating defeat earlier on Tuesday in which
01:21he did not secure the entirety of the votes of his own coalition. This time he achieved 325 votes in
01:28favor, more than 316 required. The second vote began at 3.15 p.m. local time and was previously
01:36confirmed by CDU's Parliament leaders Jens Spahr.
01:43I am now concluding the declaration.
01:48Member of Parliament Friedrich Merz has achieved the required majority of at least 316 votes.
01:57He has been elected chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in accordance with Article 63,
02:03Paragraph 2 of the Basic Law.
02:04Earlier on Tuesday, Frederick Merz had surprisingly failed to become the country's 10th chancellor,
02:13failing short by six votes, despite having formed a coalition with the Social Democratic Party and
02:19the Christian Social Union that was supposed to secure him an absolute majority. Because the vote is
02:26secret, there is no definite way to know which members of the coalition did not accompany Merz's bid,
02:31making him the first chancellor-designate, which failed to get confirmed in the first round of
02:37voting in the post-war history of Germany.
02:46There are only a few hours left for the 133 cardinals who will elect Pope Francis' successor to enter the
02:53conclave. Strong security measures are in place throughout the city and especially in the Sistine Chapel.
02:59The world conclave comes from the Latin cum cleve, which means under lock and key, and that is how the
03:06members of the College of Cardinals will be from 4 to 30 pm local time on Wednesday. 133 cardinals from
03:1471 countries will elect the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church that gathers more than 136 billion faithful.
03:24The strict major security measures that must not deal with the technological challenges order to
03:30deactivation of cell phones starting at 3 pm local time. Signal jammers will also be activated in all areas
03:37surrounding the Sistine Chapel.
03:39In the pauline chapel in the Vatican City, clergy and lady took an oath of secrecy in preparation for the
03:53conclave that will elect the new Pope. According to the Universi Domenici Gregis, reflected in the
03:59constitution, the Camerlengo and the three cardinal assistants have approved the observation of the
04:05officials on everything that directly or indirectly concerns the voting and the scrutiny for the
04:11election of the Supreme Pontiff.
04:19The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel, arrived in Moscow this Tuesday to participate in the event
04:24commemorating the Russian victory over Nazism in World War II. The Cuban President was received by the
04:32Russian authorities after his first stop in the city of St. Petersburg where he honored the memory of
04:38the thousands of heroes and martyrs of the siege of Leningrad. The head of state is leading the
04:44delegation that will commemorate the heroic deeds of the Red Army against Nazism during the Great
04:50Patriotic War. For this on May 9th, the Russian Federation will hold a military parade for the victory
04:57in which leaders from countries such as China, Brazil and Venezuela will take part.
05:08Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the European elites ungrateful for underestimating the
05:14decisive role of the Soviet army and people in liberating Europe during the Second World War.
05:20In this program, Maduro más, on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War,
05:26the President stressed that the Soviet victory over the Nazi machine was the greatest historical
05:32achievements known in any war. In this sense, the Venezuelan President underlined that it was the
05:37Russian army that discovered the Nazi concentration camps and revealed to the world the crimes of the
05:43Holocaust in which millions of innocent people lost their lives.
05:47The Nazi war machine with all its destructive capacity, which had been prepared over the years
06:04under the protection of the U.S. capital of European capitalism, getting it ready for the main attack.
06:09What happened is that, after Hitler went crazy and wanted to conquer Europe and the whole world,
06:19and in the end, he opened so many fronts that the Red Army was able to advance, by the way,
06:24will precisely commemorate here in Venezuela, the 80th anniversary of the greatest triumph of both
06:36the Russian people and the Soviet Union peoples.
06:39They gave the landslide victory to humanity against Nazi fascism, a victory that not only liberated the
06:52Soviet Union territories, but it also liberated Europe, despite the fact that European elites are now so
07:05ungrateful not to say a word to the good Venezuelan well.
07:15They are ungrateful grounded, and they do not recognize that if it were not from Marshal Chuco
07:20and the Red Army be sure that decades of slavery would have passed by.
07:23A report by United States intelligence agencies confirmed the lack of links between the president of Venezuela,
07:37Nicolás Maduro, and the extinct criminal group, Trenderagua. The document concluded that there is no evidence
07:42to prove that the Venezuelan president is associated with the organization. The announcement further denies
07:48these claims stated by U.S. President Donald Trump against his Venezuelan counterpart. Precisely since
07:55his return to the White House in January, Trump has promoted a narrative in which the extinct Trenderagua,
08:02under the alleged support of the Venezuelan government, constituted a threat to national security.
08:08These arguments have been used by Washington to accelerate the deportations of Venezuelan
08:13migrants in what constitutes a violation of human rights. And now we have a short break coming up,
08:22but first remember you can join us on TikTok at TelaCityEnglish where you'll find news in different
08:26formats, news updates and more. We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:43Welcome back to From the South. Panamanian workers are entering the third week of strike against the
08:50policies of President José Raúl Molina. In addition, unions from different sectors are joining the
08:56actions in rejection of the law that seeks to reform the Social Security Fund. The Union of Construction
09:02and Similar Workers, Soundtracks, warned that the demonstrations in defense of Social Security
09:08will continue until the executive eliminates the norm. In this sense, the collective called on the
09:14different sectors to continue the strike at the national level despite threats of repression by the
09:19authorities. Simultaneously, thousands of students of the University of Panama have been mobilizing since
09:33the morning together with professors, graduates and administrative staff demanding that the Molina
09:38government respect university autonomy and national sovereignty. In addition, the university community
09:45expressed its rejection of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the United States,
09:50considering it a document that threatens national independence.
10:03In Argentina, a new transport strike is taking place after the national government rejected the salary
10:11proposal of the transport union, Transviarios Automotor. According to the union, the pressure measure went
10:18into effect this Tuesday and will last 24 hours in all the provinces of the country. In this context,
10:24the organization warned that if an agreement with the national government is not reached, the strike could last
10:30indefinitely. So far, dozens of transportation companies have suspended their services, which affects more
10:36than 15 million users throughout the country.
10:45Salvadoran police officers have arrested the heads of the five bus companies for allegedly failing to
10:51comply with President Nayib Bukele's transportation decree. The presidential decree, which stipulated free
10:56public transportation service from May 5th to 11th, was ordered to compensate for the closure of the Los Chorros section of the Pan-American Highway,
11:06which the Ministry of Public Works hasn't been able to solve. In this context, the authorities unfolded the detainees,
11:13among them the Chair of the National Transportation Board, Alex Sorto, would be charged with offences such as
11:20bridge of duty, refusal of assistance and extortion.
11:29We recognize that we must provide a service, and we have not stopped providing it. We have shown,
11:36colleagues, how the 205 bus route has not stopped providing the service.
11:40Bus routes, as 205 and 212 have been working. When authorities announced it yesterday, unfortunately,
11:55we were in a race against the clock. Indeed, it took us by surprise, especially when in the morning, we had
12:01meetings with governmental officials, and they had not mentioned this level of logistics was going to be
12:06carried out for today. This Monday, a group of ambassadors from the Caribbean community, CARICOM,
12:13met with the Secretary General of the United Nations to assess the serious situation in Haiti. The meeting,
12:18which took place at the organization's headquarters in New York, allowed participants to analyze ways to
12:25help the Caribbean nation effectively confront the crisis of armed violence and restore the rule of law.
12:31In Haiti, several voices are calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister Alex Didier
12:36film's aim due to the exponential increase in violence. In this regard, the United Nations Secretary
12:43General Antonio Guterres reiterated that he was in close contact with the Security Council on the matter,
12:49and that he would try to promote measures to help resolve the crisis in Haiti.
13:01On Monday, heavy rains caused a significant increase in the flow of the Dajabon River located along the
13:18Hadian and Dominican border, prompting alerts for residents of its surrounding areas. In this regard,
13:23no significant damage has been reported so far, but the constant rain and strong gusts of wind,
13:30which have left several areas without electricity, are keeping the community on alert. In this context,
13:36authorities on both sides of the border have set up a permanent monitoring system and are advising
13:42people to pay the utmost attention to the changes in the river and to take the necessary precautions,
13:48especially in the most vulnerable areas.

14:40Welcome back to From the South. A group of 620 lawyers from Chile presented a new complaint
14:50against Israel to the International Criminal Court and other organisms for charges of war crimes and
14:56crimes against humanity. The multiple action is in addition to other denunciations already made
15:02by the group of lawyers where they previously obtained an arrest warrant against the Israeli Prime Minister
15:08Benjamin Netanyahu. This lawsuit follows the attack of the Zionist troops against a humanitarian
15:13flotilla with a Maltese flag, which was carrying necessary supplies to the Gaza Strip. The complaint
15:19also seeks to ensure humanitarian access to the enclave. Hundreds of Israeli protesters were on a picket
15:31line in front of the Kennesad in rejection of the governmental plan of action to widen the conflict in
15:37Gaza. Local police scattered the picketers who opposed Monday's announcement that authorized colonial
15:43occupation forces to go on their offensive against the Gaza Strip. Israeli demonstrators accused
15:49the Netanyahu administration of prioritizing war escalation over a deal with a mass Palestinian
15:55movement. They further condemned their prime ministers in action to bring home the 59 Israelis that
16:01remain detained. Overall, the Zionist regime has rejected and broken all chances of a detainee
16:07detained swap and ceasefire deal.
16:10A soldier was killed in a clash with suspected terrorists after heavy gunfire in northwestern Pakistan
16:23on Monday. The Pakistan Army Information Office said that the 40-year-old soldier, whose identity was
16:30not disclosed, died after the clash that occurred in the middle of an anti-terrorist operation in the
16:36south Waziristan district. According to the military dispatch, a total of four operations were carried
16:42out in the northeastern part of the country amid an upsurge in fighting between Pakistani forces and the
16:49resistance, leaving a total of eight suspected terrorists neutralized in addition to the soldier's death.
16:55The Sudanese paramilitary rapid support forces continued strong attack on port Sudan for the third
17:07consecutive day. The new attack is part of the escalation denounced by the United Nations on Monday
17:13and has left the entire city located in the east of the country without electricity. According to local
17:18reports, the attack caused fires both in the city's port and airport, which led to the temporary
17:25suspension of all flights. The Sudanese government has not yet commented on the attack.
17:45In Cuba, the extensive program of the Romerías de Mayo in its 32nd celebration includes around 20 events
17:52in multiple squares of the city among conferences, plastic and scenic arts, shows and other activities.
17:58This multicultural event takes place in Holguin. Our colleague Jordanis Rodriguez tells us about it.
18:09Since 1994, the cultural event has turned Holguin into the capital of young art in Cuba.
18:15Mexico is part of the 80 countries that are present in this 32nd edition of the Romerías de Mayo.
18:21The premiere in Cuba of the opera of La Mulata de Córdoba by composer José Pablo Moncayo of the
18:27Aztec country is part of the wave range of auctions. The Rodrigo Pratt Lyric Theater, the Holguin
18:33Symphony Orchestra, as well as choristers and musicians from Mexico, joining this song from solidarity
18:40among nations under the orchestral direction of Maestro Isaac Márquez.
18:44It is wonderful because both in the Lyric Theater and in the orchestra, there are first-year students
18:52and even professionals. And it is an integral experience for everyone. Since the group is
18:56the third genius, you have to know how to work so that everyone sounds the same and that they are
19:01at the same level. Among the most aware spaces of the Romerías is the 30th edition of the Congress
19:11of thought and prize for young researchers, Memoria Nuestra. This is a meeting of deep reflection
19:16inspired by the analytical vocation and social commitment of the artists attending the Romerías.
19:22It is the first time that I am in Holguin, in Romerías, and the truth is that I have been surprised
19:32by the amount of activities they have. We start very early, about 4 in the morning. It is to come
19:37prepared to not sleep and to see many activities of all kinds, performing arts, visual arts, and a super
19:44important part that has caught my attention. It is the academic part.
19:54At Bloguerías de Mayo, an event that brings together communicators, journalists and other actors in the
20:00media, there was also a dialogue on ethics, values and principles in contemporary communications
20:05in the midst of a world that is trying to globalize. The ethical and legal challenge of the use of artificial
20:10intelligence in the media were discussed at the event. We have to go ahead and demonstrate that
20:17artificial intelligence is a tool that we can put in value from use of ethics, from the journalistic
20:22trait and exercise. Not humanizing them, but using them as a tool. We must give them the elements for
20:28good use and apply them from good practices.
20:30Organized by the SAIS Brothers organization, an organization of the artistic and literary vanguard of
20:41the country, the Romerías de Mayo are the epicenter of the art between tradition and modernity.
20:49We arrived with flutes with different types of instruments today to donate as part of a project that
20:54has been making cultural exchange and donations of about a thousand musical instruments to Cuba for
21:00more than 25 years. This is a beautiful city.
21:09The Romerías de Mayo were born for the debate, the confrontation of ideas and the alternative
21:14and vital discussion that the island needs. We are talking about an intergenerational dialogue
21:19from May 2 to 8 because there is no today without yesterday.
21:30And like this, we have come to the end of this brief, but you can find this and many other stories
