00:00Hi everyone, this is Manjisha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News. I'm here with Sanya Mirza who brings
00:20a very exciting sport into our lives, pickleball. I'm told it's a lazy person's tennis. Sanya,
00:25please rectify the popular opinion please. I think tennis players might agree with you but I don't
00:31think pickleballers might or picklers what you want to call them but I think that I think it's a sport
00:37to be very honest I think it's about sport is about evolving just like in life and I feel that
00:43the more people play sport the healthier world we live in. That's honestly the truth. Now tennis
00:50is something that is played vastly it's a global sport everybody knows about tennis but pickleball
00:56is a sport that is just about kind of making it here. In America you go every person people don't
01:02travel because they don't want to miss pickleball right imagine like they're staying put in India
01:08I'm telling you I was trying to book a court to go and play pickleball it there was a booking for one
01:12week in advance in Hyderabad. Really? This is this is fact this has happened to me so I had to pull
01:18strings to get a pickleball court believe it or not so I feel that Dubai is ready for something
01:24because Dubai is and has been known to pioneer change you know it's always the first person to
01:32get the you know biggest tower in the world it's always the first person to get the biggest roads
01:36in the world and the best cars in the world so why not sport why not sport which hasn't been played
01:41here and we try to not I don't see it as a lazy person's tennis I see it more as a version of
01:50tennis just like paddle was when paddy came into play people said similar things about that as well
01:55right but I think that pickleball is a community sport where you can play I can play our kids can
02:02play anybody can play our parents can play excellent so it's a low impact sport it is a well it's a it's
02:09a lower impact sport than others but if you play at the professional level it's still high impact you
02:13know but to play just to play and to enjoy and say okay let's as a family let's go on every Sunday or
02:20let's go on a Saturday and spend a couple of hours doing something that actually is not drinking going
02:27out eating doing all of that stuff and instead actually what is good for us and what actually
02:32brings us together I mean pickleball is the sport excellent you know Naomi Osaka LeBron all of them
02:38own pickleball leagues right and Tom Brady for instance is this your way of also like just
02:44reinventing yourself because I know you have spoken to us several times on a tennis court
02:48so to see you enter into a pickleball it's it's you reinventing the wheel aren't you I don't think it's
02:54I would say again I don't think it's reinventing I think it's just evolving I think that there is no
03:00reason why pickleball and tennis and paddle can't coexist you know I think people are always like oh my
03:07god if you play tennis I don't know if you can play pickleball it's actually on the contrary if you
03:10play tennis you can play paddle and pickleball and I think that's the way to look at it and I think that
03:16any sport that brings an entire world together and is good for you in terms of health in terms of just
03:26just having a family bond to have you can have a social and go and say okay let me go for three hours
03:32and to a pickleball and you might play for one hour you can have a coffee you can have a sandwich you
03:36know it's that kind of sport it's more a club community sport and now that's becoming professional
03:43and I think we still have a you know a little while before it gets super super perfect but you
03:47see an andri agassi competing through that right you just legitimize the exactly and you see steffi
03:53graph like they're up with their pickle paddles and they're going so I'm saying everybody can't be
03:58wrong every legend can't be wrong right and karan johar and sanya mirza that's one sentence I thought
04:05you'll never say no no honestly unless you're in a movie it's a union I didn't see coming
04:11you have to tell me how did you convince karan johar to be a part of this partnership to be very
04:16honest karan comes in from the global sports which is our other partner and shashank khitan has a big
04:22part to play in that karan I do know personally for many many years and and we've had some great
04:27laughs and some great dinners and and and some great times together and he is somebody that again has
04:35pioneered romance has pioneered cinema filmmaking in ways that uh was sometimes even ahead of their
04:43times and I think that it is befitting why he's in a place where a sport may be in this area of the
04:51world is ahead of its time at this moment of time and we're trying to you know catch up to the world
04:56right we're trying to catch up to everything catch up yeah so I feel that he is um he's befitting to this
05:02and and and he brings the glamour he does he brings the humor you bring the glamour I also bring some
05:08glamour but he brings it literally I bring it I bring it it's a by-product it just comes along
05:15sometimes come on she's very modest by the way over the years haven't you but you have to tell me like
05:20Dubai if you look at it as a city we try everything new it's some some things take off what's your
05:26biggest fear as an entrepreneur I think that there is risk involved in anything that you do and I think
05:31that that is something that you have to accept and acknowledge when you're going into anything new
05:36um playing tennis was new when I was six years old nobody did that right and and here we are
05:41so I'm saying we have to take risks in order to be to give yourself a chance to be successful right
05:49if you just sit there you're definitely not going to be successful yes you might fail but if you're
05:55sick there you're going to fail right because there is no chance I mean so I don't really live my life
05:59like that I live my life thinking that if I try to take up something I give everything that I have
06:05in it and I hope for the best yes I prepare for the worst but I do hope for the best of course and
06:10that's what you have to hope as an entrepreneur as well when it comes to how good are you with money
06:14I've always wondered and I ask you this not in the classist form or tell me will it make money
06:17do you think you are going to as an entrepreneur you have broken that misconception that I'm a boss lady
06:22in Dubai I don't really look at it like that to be very honest I think for me uh money hasn't really
06:29played um I won't say that I we don't all enjoy money we all enjoy money we all we all work for
06:37it we all do that but growing up that was not my sole vision my sole vision to be was to be the best
06:44tennis player I could be my sole vision was to represent my country my soul you know I had those visions
06:50and again money came as a byproduct of it wealth came as a byproduct of being successful at what I
06:57did um fame came with that as well exactly like that and the question is can we live without fame
07:04yes that is a fact because there are many people who do live without fame uh can we live without
07:09money we can live without a lot of money we can still live but we still need some money so my
07:15relationship with money I think is quite healthy like I it's it doesn't really um I don't feel
07:21like oh my god money is my source of happiness and money is my source of sadness because I have
07:26been in a place where we didn't have a lot of money and we were still quite happy having said that I'm
07:31not gonna say that nobody likes money everybody does yeah let's be honest I mean we all work for it
07:37right but because we can give our children a better life we can send them to better schools we can
07:41you I mean xyz there are many reasons for that buying a bag buying stuff like that is luxury that
07:47that is something that is we are doing because we have that money it's a want not a need yeah but we
07:54need money for the other things right like for our kids for ourselves and to have a better life better
07:59house better whatever um so I feel that my relationship with money to answer your question
08:05is decently healthy nice um I still come from uh within I'm still a middle class girl who believe
08:13it or not still I'll be like if the if my diva bill is like higher thousand or two thousand bucks higher
08:19I'll go to buy the house manager and I'm like what happened why is this higher right you know I like that
08:24because that is something that we've been taught to respect money so yeah that is my relationship with money
08:30last question the rave parties have been replaced by coffee parties etc because people want to be
08:35healthier or like a matcha tea party etc is this the way the world is going forward I think my kids are
08:41going to be far more healthier than me where ladies night is not a thing perhaps they'll meet at a pickle
08:46ball or perhaps party I hope so I mean that's the hope right and that's why we're sitting here trying
08:51to do this and when you see people from different genres of the world whether it's Shashank whether it's
08:56myself whether it's cash whether it's it's Karan and we're sitting here and we're all saying the same
09:01thing because we have children and we have a generation the next generation who we want to tell
09:07that health is more important than anything else yes it's good to have fun and yes it's good to you
09:13know obviously we've all done it and we will all do it and but everything in moderation is good but being
09:19healthy can be something that you prioritize right you know and not prioritize partying or going out
09:27and and even if you do want to go out you can do that as you said with other things you don't have
09:31to go and like absolutely get smashed and come back the next day and when you're not open your eyes
09:37yes word on the street it is not yeah I just think that that is I hope the way we are going excellent
09:44and thank you for bringing pickleball into our lives and making it a legitimate sport who better than
09:50a tennis legend Sanyam Riza to do so thank you with Karan Johar the Bollywood Royalty
