00:00Get ready to relive a Caribbean classic.
00:02Phil Simmons lit up Kingston with a career-best knock, a blazing 122 runs of just 113 balls,
00:09peppered with 12 cracking boundaries and 5 towering sixes.
00:13Against South Africa in the first ODI on April 7, 1992, it was vintage Phil Simmons, flair,
00:20power and pure West Indian swagger.
00:22His sensational inning set the tone as the West Indies earned a commanding 107-run victory.
00:29There was no surprises, he backed the player of the match award.
00:32So sit back and enjoy this masterclass from the Caribbean Mass Trope.
00:59It's a fine shot by Simmons, he's a big strong man, and then he hits it, it stays hit.
01:12That's the second boundary in the over.
01:15So Simmons off to a rather hesitant start, now finding the middle of the bat.
01:21Well, he's been told, as Corey Fensail, to keep it up to the batsmen, and the belief is
01:29that when they are brought onto the front foot, they're a little bit more vulnerable when they're
01:33hooking and cutting.
01:34Oh, that's a big shout, it could be, no, says umpire Buckner, who shakes his head so vigorously,
01:43it almost came off.
01:45And they get a leg by, down to third man.
01:49Down the next side, just, you think?
01:55This is close.
01:57Pitching in line with the stumps and just about straightening Henry, that was close.
02:08And see Cronje, coming in to Phil Simmons.
02:14Oh well, that's four runs, um, John T. Rhodes threw himself to his left, it was a rank long
02:20hop, outside off stump, short and wide, it got exactly what it asked for.
02:27Four runs, the end of the over, 88 for one.
02:38There you see, Dante Rhodes, also the great motivator of the side.
02:44He's always encouraging his chap, there he goes, geeing them up, trying to keep them
02:50all interested.
02:51Don't think he'll have much difficulty in doing that today, though.
02:57It's in the air, but it's alright, it's four runs, a massive blow by Phil Simmons, he
03:02found the gap, pinned it safely away to the left of mid-off, for a thumping four.
03:07They're enjoying that alright.
03:18Very good shot indeed, left leg right to the pitch of the ball.
03:22Cronje, not the quickest of the South African bowlers, anything pitched up has got to go.
03:28Simmons there, opening the pace, you could see him do it, he's gonna get a couple of runs, uh, down to Hudson at third man.
03:41That is the hundred up, a hundred for one, we're in, came in just, uh, a hundred and forty balls.
03:54Richardson, well he'll have a bruised toe.
04:01He's hit that very well indeed.
04:04That's a, a carry, I would say, of something in the region, of a hundred meters or more.
04:10Easily, it was only a matter of time before Simmons, who's a magnificent, here he goes again.
04:17Perfect timing, heads down, lovely shot.
04:21It was only a matter of time before he had to get into the, into the scoring mode and get some more runs on the board.
04:27That's gone all the way into the St. Mary's Basic School, which is, uh, just behind us here in the media centre.
04:38And there's plenty of interest in the game, all the radio stations here, bringing the commentary.
04:43And, uh, here's Phil Simmons going for another six, not half as high as the one that he had earlier.
04:48But, uh, with enough carry on it, that it just went over the ropes for the second six off Omar Henry.
04:56He's beginning to get off to the left arm spinner now.
05:04And there he goes again, another perfectly timed hit, not as hard as the first one as Tony said.
05:09But, nevertheless, beautifully timed and hit just over the boundary here for six.
05:13That's a mighty hit. That's his third six.
05:25Perhaps someone in the third will caught it.
05:31But Phil Simmons here is really enjoying himself.
05:34He's dominated this 50 partnership.
05:38Richardson has just got 15, and that raises the 50 partnership.
05:41And in just 53 balls, that was a powerful stroke.
05:48Just playing through the line of the ball, minimal movement of the pitch through the line, and the hands do the rest.
05:58Kicks the shortest boundary, and hits it hard and low, and it's four more.
06:13And the South African bowlers really taking a pounding now.
06:16I think Kepler West has got to rethink his field placing.
06:22With the slow South African bowling, it's not very difficult to hit them over the top, as Phil Simmons did there.
06:30I think he had better think about having a long off, and a long on.
06:40Another good hit.
06:42And it's six.
06:44Over-ex to cover.
06:45That's a mighty hit.
06:46And a wonderful cricket shot.
06:47Gansal really coming into a bit of punishment here from Phil Simmons.
07:00Up in his slot.
07:01Up in his slot.
07:03Not the quickest of the South African bowlers.
07:07Just falling through, through the line of the ball.
07:12Not a big hit over the offside boundary.
07:1484 for Simmons.
07:15And this will be four more.
07:16The very longest point of the boundary.
07:17The fielded down at Longhoff.
07:18Started late for it.
07:19I don't think he picked it up and it was played, but I don't know that he would have got all that
07:35way around to cut it off anyway.
07:37And it's got them dancing in their seats.
07:40Just for a bit of variety.
07:43Phil Simmons hits this one.
07:44Pretty much the same direction, but on the ground.
07:49Beautifully stroked through the offside.
07:54Oh, Simmons racing to his 100 at this stage.
07:59Oh, and that's a cheeky little sweep.
08:00And Simmons, in fact, doing what Lara did early on.
08:03He's got away with it.
08:04It's four runs.
08:05He lapped it round the corner.
08:07A nice delicate touch takes him to 96.
08:10And South Africa are now looking down the barrels at a pretty hefty total.
08:16South Africa won the toss.
08:17They put the West Indies in.
08:19They removed Haynes when the score was 32.
08:22They remove...
08:23He made nine.
08:24Lara made 50.
08:26But the score was 104 when he was out.
08:28And now Simmons with 96.
08:30And Richardson with 19.
08:32There's a story attached to Richardson.
08:34After this ball, I'll tell you.
08:38Well, they'll have to hurry.
08:39If they had a direct hit then, it might have been out.
08:41I think had...
08:43Er...
08:44Conye hit the stumps then...
08:45Had rather Yontay Rhodes hit the stumps,
08:47I think that would have been out.
08:51But Richardson, in fact, got in by the time Richardson had gathered the ball and broken the stumps.
08:56Close run thing, Conrad.
09:00Yes, indeed.
09:01It was a...
09:02Yes, if he hit the stumps, he certainly would have been out.
09:05Hit the stumps and he'd gone.
09:06For the really big one to greet Simmons when he gets his 100.
09:10There it is, and he punches the air.
09:12There's his 100.
09:13He looks like a cult who's just won the derby.
09:16And I've never seen anyone so pleased.
09:18There he is, Phil Simmons.
09:20And a tremendous achievement.
09:24And that the rest of his side applaud him there, in their dressing room.
09:28102 balls, 4-6...
09:31Well, there we are.
09:36That can be out there.
09:37Six runs over the top, into the television box.
09:39Will Simmons again treating Snell as though he's his maiden aunt on a beach.
09:45Six more runs, a lovely, handsome blow.
09:50Phil Simmons is truly enjoying himself.
09:54He's another perfectly timed drive.
09:56Head well down, nice to the ball.
09:58He's enjoying himself.
09:59Look at him.
10:00And he's got his highest score in one day international cricket.
10:041-1-1.
10:05Nilsons.
10:06But what a blow that was.
10:08Like many he's paid on this joyful occasion.
10:11What a day he's made it to remember.
10:17Well, that I think is going to be four more.
10:19I don't think Donald's going to get there.
10:21A despairing dive.
10:22Bowler, fielder, hat, ball.
10:24Then kitchen sink as well.
10:26They all go over the boundary rope.
10:27It's four runs.
10:28That's a few.
10:29Yes, that was Richard Snell straight down the laser.
10:33A little bit.
10:34Full pitch.
10:35And Phil Simmons, perfect form.
10:37Had no trouble.
10:382.30 for three.
10:45Well, four more.
10:46Off the edge.
10:47It's all fair in love and war.
10:48And that's just the stage of this one day game we've reached.
10:51There are a handful of overs to go now.
10:54The West Indies are really on song, hitting at everything.
10:57Look at the crowd there.
10:58I expect they're going to fall out of there very soon.
11:01But they're loving it, aren't they?
11:04That's right.
11:05That was a missed cover drive.
11:07But in this sort of cricket, everything goes.
11:10Especially at this time, within ten overs.
11:12They'll be looking for everything they can get.
11:14They get a very big score here.
11:19That's gone.
11:20It's a long chase.
11:21I think it's going away for four.
11:23It is.
11:24The road can't stop it on the cover boundary.
11:27It seems to me that Simmons could hit the ball anywhere he wanted.
11:31And it would go for four at the moment.
11:33That's right.
11:34Even when he's hitting, he keeps his head down.
11:37And so he's able to hit that ball well and truly inside the gap.
11:41Beautiful bit of hitting.
11:42Beautiful.
11:43There's a lot of beef there, too, isn't there?
11:46Yeah.
11:54Oh, well, that's up in the air.
11:55He's going to be caught by Vessels there at short extra cover.
11:58He is.
11:59It was a slow ball and he checked his stroke.
12:01And so Simmons' innings is over.
12:03He's out for 123.
12:05It's 239 for four.
12:08He was caught by Vessels off the bowling of Kepa.
12:11Yes, indeed.
12:12He looked as though he was getting a little bit tired.
12:14And he didn't quite follow through on that ball.
12:16It was a good ball from Kalfador.
12:18He, um, slow ball.
12:20He checked his shot and he was easily caught at extra cover.
12:23239 for four.
12:25Well, there we are.
12:26That is the end of what has been very much the innings of the match so far.
12:34An easy catch.
12:37And Kepa Vessels took it so well.
12:39The 239 will have a big, big job on their hands.
12:46Richie Richardson booed throughout his innings, made a cultivated 30.
12:50And that all added up to 287 for six.
12:54Phil Simmons played some of his best cricket in ODS for the West Indies in 1992.
12:59That year, he appeared in 21 Monday International and scored a total of 517 runs at an average of 32.31.
13:08His 1992 performances were instrumental in establishing him as a reliable opening option,
13:14who could anchor the innings or accelerate the run rate when needed.
13:18Phil Simmons was more than just a best man.
13:21He was a genuine all-rounder.
13:23Phil Simmons played a total of 143 one-day international for the West Indies between 1987 and 1999.
13:30Over the course of his ODI career, he scored 3675 runs at an average of 28.93, with a strike rate of approximately 67.46.
13:42He knocked up 5 centuries and 18.5 centuries, with his highest score being a brilliant 122 against South Africa in 1992 at Kingston.
13:51He was known for his aggressive, yet composed batting style.
13:55Simmons often opened the innings and played crucial roles in setting up or chasing targets.
14:01In addition to his batting, he was a handy medium-paced baller, taking 83 wickets at an average of 34.65, with the best balling figure of 4-for-3.
14:11His dual ability with bat and ball made him a valuable all-rounder in the West Indies squad during the 1990s.
