00:00Is Polaris building a self-driving side-by-side?
00:03CFMoto is working on a closed-cab EV.
00:06Lots of Massimo news.
00:08And we finally get our hands on a 2025 Polaris Expedition ADV.
00:12All that and more on this episode of the UTV Driver Podcast.
00:16You may notice this is a little bit of a different format
00:18because Aaron is here in Knoxville in the flesh.
00:22Aaron, welcome to Knoxville.
00:23Thanks, bud. It's good to be here.
00:24How was your Thanksgiving?
00:25My Thanksgiving was great, man.
00:26We kept it small, just my parents and my father-in-law.
00:29It was great. We had a good time.
00:30That sounds lovely.
00:31Yeah, it was.
00:31Truly, truly lovely.
00:33Ours was also like a pretty low-key thing.
00:36Yeah, just us like, you know, tight little fam situation.
00:39It was great.
00:40Love that.
00:40Yeah, super low-key.
00:43Well, now that the leftovers are fully digested,
00:47it's time to jump into a little bit of recent news.
00:50And we are going to start with some fun stuff.
00:53Our man Ben Purvis hopped around in the patent office,
00:57dug up some pretty cool stuff,
00:58including a patent design for a self-driving side-by-side from Polaris.
01:06What is going on?
01:07Well, you know, first of all,
01:08I think that this is kind of the logical next step, right?
01:11Side-by-sides have grown a lot in the last few years.
01:13There's a lot of, you know, we're kind of going to,
01:15okay, what's the next thing?
01:18Self-driving is on the tip of everyone's tongue.
01:20We've been talking about it for a few years now.
01:22And so Polaris is hopping on that train.
01:24And it's cool what they're using it for.
01:26This thing will park itself on a trailer or in a truck.
01:29And I think that's the primary use here.
01:31Will it back a trailer for me?
01:32No, no.
01:34As far as I know, it won't.
01:35But basically what it does is it uses an array of sensors on the front and rear of the rig,
01:40and it can figure out ramp angle and distance and how wide a space is and just park itself in there.
01:47And apparently they're working on a phone app where you can, like James Bond with the BMW,
01:51yeah, you can kind of control it from that.
01:53And they're talking about doing one that will respond to hand signals,
01:56which I can't see that screwing up at all.
01:58But the TLDR here is that Polaris has been working on self-driving technology.
02:04They did this on the military razors for a while.
02:07They've done this a bunch of times, and now they're trying to, I guess,
02:10work on a way to get it into a civilian consumer role.
02:14And, yeah, I can't think of a better place to use it than in parking a side-by-side.
02:18And it's worth noting that things like drive-by-wire, EFI, electric power steering,
02:23all those things have to be present before you can really go with self-driving
02:28because obviously it's all EFI-controlled.
02:30Yeah, I mean, you're right.
02:31The market has been moving that direction.
02:34And I'm not just talking about cars in general.
02:37You know, every time a manufacturer adds another integrated system,
02:41and what I mean by that is, like you said, like steer-by-wire, throttle-by-wire, brake-by-wire,
02:46any time there's anything that controls those systems
02:48or that interrupts the sort of chain of command between your appendages
02:53and what happens on the machine,
02:55that's a chance for, you know, a certain level of manipulation,
02:59including control over the vehicle.
03:01And while, you know, I get, like, look, we are into side-by-sides because we like to drive.
03:07Nobody's talking about putting this stuff on a razor that we know of.
03:10Right.
03:11And I can very much see this sort of technology working as a force multiplier.
03:15Yeah.
03:15So, like, one dude being able to do the job of two dudes, right?
03:19Right.
03:19So imagine, like, spraying a fence line,
03:21and you're just able to tell your ranger,
03:24hey, follow this fence until it comes to a stop while I'm in the passenger seat spraying this thing.
03:28Like, that would be deeply, deeply useful.
03:31Or, you know, you've got a training ring for horses,
03:34and, you know, the thing needs to be groomed.
03:36You punch the button on your app and say,
03:37hey, do circles in this thing until everything's skookum.
03:41That would be pretty handy.
03:41Yeah, and if you don't have physical barriers for the sensors to look at,
03:45I can see a world where you can use GPS.
03:47You know, if you've got ride command or something in there,
03:49it can geofence.
03:50Yeah, that's smart.
03:51And follow a parameter that way.
03:52So, anyway, there's literally endless possibilities for this.
03:56The patent is pretty detailed.
03:58You've got to go on our website and check out the full story.
04:00We're not going to go through every detail of it here.
04:02But this is a really exciting thing.
04:04I can't wait to see what Polaris uses it for.
04:06I guess the disclaimer is, you know, these are patent drawings.
04:10That doesn't mean that this is anywhere close to coming to market.
04:12It just means that Polaris has had the idea,
04:15and they want to make sure that they get their IP locked in
04:17before anyone else tries to swoop in and take it from them.
04:20So you may or may not see it in the future,
04:22but we're stoked that they're even thinking about it.
04:25Yeah, absolutely.
04:25And, you know, Polaris, if you're listening, do this.
04:28It makes perfect sense.
04:30Just do it.
04:30Yeah.
04:31All right.
04:31So that wasn't the only patent that we looked at over the past week or so.
04:36Purvis also dug up some interesting stuff from CFMoto.
04:39We saw a smaller two-seat side-by-side,
04:44an EV with interchangeable battery packs.
04:47That's super cool.
04:48They also, and I think this is the thing that we're more interested in,
04:52a larger closed cab EV.
04:54Yeah, and this is really cool because basically the floor of the EV is the battery.
04:59The battery doubles as the floor, which means all that weight is now way down low.
05:03And you don't have, you don't have like an engine box, right?
05:08You can just have the entire interior be wide open
05:11because, I mean, the battery essentially is what powers it.
05:14You know, there's a couple of motors on either end for the four-wheel drive system.
05:18So it's super space efficient without you really needing to get creative.
05:22And so that is super cool.
05:24It's very cool to see yet another manufacturer coming out with an EV.
05:27I know you guys are probably sucking your teeth and gasping about gasoline.
05:32And the reality is EVs are coming, whether you like it or not.
05:35And every time a new manufacturer takes it upon themselves to start designing a new EV,
05:41that means that the technology gets closer and closer and closer to being mature.
05:44And that means that these things will make more and more sense as they come out.
05:48You know, this is all development work.
05:50Yeah, yeah.
05:50And I, you know, look, you know,
05:51we ran and raved about the Ranger Kinetic a little while ago.
05:54Well, and for good reason, you know, in my opinion, that's the best Ranger they make.
05:58It's quiet.
05:59It's fast.
05:59It's efficient.
06:00All those things are awesome.
06:01You know, you're dead right when it comes to packaging, right?
06:04The biggest constraint about how you can use space inside of a side-by-side
06:09is the fact that you have this massive power unit that sits basically over the rear wheels.
06:14So all that space is sucked up with just nothing, just heating noise.
06:17And speaking of noise, these things sort of take care of my biggest complaint with most side-by-sides,
06:23which is the fact that they sound like garbage.
06:26All of them sound like a sick Dyson vacuum.
06:28So, you know, if you can get that stuff out of the way, make it quiet, make it powerful, I'm 100% here for it.
06:34And think about, I mean, think about how good the stereo would be in this thing if you're not fighting the noise of an engine.
06:39You know, like it or not, side-by-sides are not particularly well sound insulated, even if they're enclosed.
06:44And so we have myriad examples in the OEM world of stereos that have huge wattage.
06:51And all that is to overcome the din from the side-by-side.
06:54And they don't, you know, some of them are pretty good when you're standing still,
06:57but most of them don't have great audio quality when they're up and running.
07:00I feel like this would take care of that.
07:03Well, and it makes sense that we're seeing this from CFMoto specifically,
07:06because China has a pretty massive EV industry already.
07:10And, you know, we mentioned this on the Ranger Kinetic episode,
07:11but Ford spent some time just driving, Ford CEO Jim Farley spent a bunch of time just driving various Chinese EVs.
07:18And he said they were light years ahead of us just in terms of, like, development and how nice the vehicles are.
07:23So, you know, if companies in China already have the battery technology figured out
07:27and the motor technology figured out, it makes perfect sense that CFMoto would hit us there.
07:30Yep. And not to mention that that means that the battery packs are primarily made in China,
07:35which means that the factory that makes the batteries is literally next door to the factory that builds the side-by-sides.
07:42That's going to drive costs down.
07:43Yeah.
07:44If you don't have to ship a, you know, few tons of batteries across the ocean to install them here,
07:49that knocks down all the costs.
07:51So, I mean, CFMoto's are inexpensive anyway, and this is one reason why.
07:55It also is worth noting that they're talking about an enclosed two-door side-by-side
08:00and an enclosed four-door side-by-side that are both EV.
08:03There's no hybrid technology mentioned in the patents.
08:06And...
08:07Yeah, I mean, the drawing looks like an expedition.
08:09I was just going to say that.
08:10I mean, it looks exactly like an expedition.
08:11So, you know, this...
08:13And who knows, right?
08:14Like, the manufacturers use sort of different patent drawings to sort of throw people off the case all the time.
08:20Yeah.
08:21So, like, auto manufacturers are famous for this.
08:23They'll patent something, and in the drawing, it will be in, like, a two-door coupe.
08:28And it turns out it's for a pickup truck.
08:29Right.
08:29So, who knows exactly what this is going to show up in?
08:33And it's possible that CFMoto is crossing a bunch of things off the list at the same time.
08:36So, maybe they want to build a closed cab side-by-side.
08:40Maybe they want to build an EV, and instead of having two patents for two different things,
08:44they just cram all this stuff together and, you know, Bob's your uncle.
08:47Well, and an EV is a power unit, right?
08:49So, you can put it in a sport side-by-side, you can put it in something like the Expedition,
08:53and the point is now you've got the patent already taken care of.
08:58We should also mention maintenance costs and longevity.
09:00Yeah, I mean, you know, the joy, the true joy of an electric motor is there are a handful of moving parts.
09:09Yep.
09:09You know, and, yeah, we have figured out how to make internal combustion engines run for a very long time,
09:14but the more parts you have in an internal combustion engine, it's just a bunch of parts.
09:19Yep.
09:19The larger the chances are for failure, right?
09:22So, an EV, you don't have valve adjustments.
09:24Nope.
09:24You don't have an oil change interval, you don't have all the sort of stuff, spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil packs,
09:33like all that stuff that goes into keeping a machine going for years and years and years, you just don't have to mess with.
09:40Yep.
09:40You've got, what, tires and suspension?
09:43Yeah, tires, suspension, you might have coolant if it's a water-cooled battery system.
09:49Right.
09:49Or a water-cooled motor, but otherwise, that's pretty much it.
09:53So, no indication when we're going to see this thing on sale yet.
09:57Again, it's a patent.
09:59You know, who knows when it might show up, but, again, it's exciting to see somebody working on it,
10:03and it's exciting to know that CFMoto is expanding their scope in side-by-sides.
10:09Yeah, I mean, you know, I think everybody sort of, for a long time, sort of wrote off these manufacturers like CFMoto
10:16is sort of copying what everybody else is doing, and they've established so much market share.
10:21They're like the fourth largest manufacturer, side-by-side manufacturer globally.
10:26They finally have the resources to sort of start poking around on the edges and figuring out what they want to do next,
10:30and this is what it looks like.
10:31Well, we've said this a million times.
10:32This sort of, like, reminds me of the early days of the car industry where, you know, yeah, Dodge Brothers and Ford and Chevrolet
10:41were all building very much the same car, and then as they got market share, as they got the money on board to do different things,
10:48they started sort of differentiating themselves, and you're seeing that here where CFMoto, yes,
10:52they copied Rangers and Razors for forever and ever, but we saw them come out with a new sport side-by-side this year
10:59that didn't look like anything else that they had ever built or anything that anyone else was building,
11:03but it had a very specific target market in mind, and this is, I think, this is hand-in-hand with that.
11:09You know, again, worth saying, at a good price point, right?
11:12Because as side-by-sides continue to get more complex and more expensive over and over again,
11:17they've sort of abandoned that lower price point, which brought a lot of people into the hobby to begin with.
11:21So, if a brand like CFMoto is going to make that work, you know, to me, that feels exactly like what Honda did in the 70s and 80s,
11:28and it feels like what Hyundai did in the 90s and 2000s.
11:31So, yeah, makes perfect sense, and anything that can continue to spur Polaris and Can-Am and the big players, I'm here for.
11:38Yep, yep.
11:40So, well, we're not going to be able to get our hands on that anytime soon,
11:44but we did hear some news on some machines that you can get your hands on as soon as next year.
11:48Aaron, you've been to a Rural King.
11:51I have been to a Rural King.
11:52Dude, one of my favorite stores on the planet.
11:54Yeah, it's like Walmart had a baby with tractor supply.
12:00Yeah, and an advanced auto.
12:02An advanced auto.
12:04And a gun store.
12:05Yep.
12:06And, yeah, that's about right.
12:09Yeah, just imagine a Cabela's Walmart grocery miasma thing.
12:14With DeWalt in Milwaukee and Crescent tools and socks.
12:18It's great.
12:19Popcorn.
12:20Popcorn.
12:21You need horse medicine.
12:23You got that taken care of.
12:24You need baby chicks.
12:25Got that, too.
12:26I mean, I swear to God, if every other store on the earth closed and I could only shop at Rural King, I'd probably do anything.
12:33Yeah, you'd be happy.
12:33I bring this up because Rural King and Massimo have expanded their partnership.
12:39Oh, okay.
12:39So Massimo's been selling their little mini bikes and the sort of mini Jeeps at Rural King for a long time.
12:46They just signed a new contract where Massimo is going to make its ATVs, UTVs, and golf carts also available at Rural King.
12:54Oh, no way.
12:54Which is cool, right?
12:56Because for a long time, if you didn't have a place in your area that carried these things, you just had to order them online and hope that you liked what you got when it showed up.
13:05This, at least, you can go put hands on it.
13:07You can sort of see what it's like.
13:09If you have issues with the rig, you can bring it back.
13:11Right.
13:11Which is very cool.
13:12If you don't have a Rural King in your area, number one, sucks to be you.
13:16Number two, that might change soon.
13:18Part of this announcement was that Rural King is really going to expand their footprint over the next year.
13:24Oh, okay.
13:24The company said that they open five stores in 2024.
13:27They're going to open 15 over the next 13 months.
13:31So some pretty serious expansion.
13:33So if you don't have a Rural King in your area, you might have one soon.
13:36Yeah, that'd be great because I don't have a Rural King in my area.
13:39We got two in Knoxville.
13:40Well, it must be nice, but we don't have a single one in central Virginia.
13:44So I'm looking forward to maybe seeing one in the near future.
13:48Yeah, and Massimo also announced an update to one of their heavy hitters.
13:54All right, so this new buck, what's it look like?
13:56Well, it looks a lot like a previous-gen Polaris Ranger, like we just said.
14:00It's functionally similar to a six-seat Can-Am Defender, but the redesign included ABS half doors.
14:07It's got a 33-horsepower engine now.
14:09It's got touchscreen GPS, and it has new 25-inch tires wrapped around aluminum rims.
14:14You know, it's a bargain basement side-by-side, but check this out.
14:18It comes in $3,000 cheaper than a base Can-Am Defender.
14:22And that's a three-seat Defender, not a six-seat Defender.
14:25Yes, this is a six-seat rig that comes in at $11,999, which is about as cheap as you're going to find.
14:33Yeah, I mean, that's pretty unreal in terms of bargain.
14:36I mean, I don't think we've ever seen anything come to our doors here that we're close to that.
14:40No, I know.
14:41Like, 33 horsepower, we're not going to set the world on fire by any means,
14:45but for a lot of people, if you're just bopping around a small piece of property, more than enough.
14:49Yeah, and I will say this.
14:50For one thing, now you'll be able to go down to your local rural king and put hands on one,
14:55and so if you're skeptical about whether it matches up to a Can-Am Defender, well, guess what?
14:59Now you can go see for yourself, and if that $3,000 is worth it to you to step up to the Can-Am, there you go.
15:05Now you know ahead of time before you spend your hard-earned dollars.
15:08And the other thing is, if you look at what some other big-box stores put out there as UTVs that are...
15:14UTVs, they're golf carts.
15:15Yeah, and they're $8,500 or $9,000.
15:18This is an honest-to-goodness UTV.
15:20Again, not the most powerful rig out there, certainly not the most well-appointed,
15:24but it's not a golf cart.
15:25It is a UTV, and at $12,000, it's really hard to argue with.
15:30$12,000, more brand-new.
15:31Yeah, yeah, exactly.
15:32In a lot of places, you're hard-pressed to get a solid 4- or 5-year-old utility rig for $12,000,
15:39much less a brand-new machine.
15:41So, again, like I was saying, as the market continues to trend towards luxury rigs and more and more cost,
15:48it's good to see people, manufacturers, filling in the lower rungs.
15:52Yeah, and you can go to Massimo's website and check them out.
15:55They'll tell you where your nearest dealer is if you want to go put hands on one,
15:58and they are available now.
16:00All right, there you go.
16:01Okay, so we finally got something fun in the shop here.
16:06It's been a thing that I've been waiting on for a long time.
16:08It's a thing you know quite a bit about.
16:09It's an Expedition ADV.
16:12Yes, we have the five-seat Polaris Expedition ADV in-house.
16:16I'm so excited because I drove this thing almost two years ago in Arizona,
16:21and I had an absolute blast.
16:24The biggest takeaway from that drive was that the side-by-side industry had moved forward a step
16:30behind some effort that Polaris had put forward.
16:33This thing has a super solid chassis, and there's an enormous amount of room inside.
16:37So they went directly at the overlander market with this rig.
16:41They saw people cruising around in Toyotas, you know, in lifted Tacomas and kitted out land cruisers
16:47and all that and thought, well, there's space for us to get in here.
16:50And so basically you have a UTV that is a little bit smaller than a Jeep Wrangler, length and width.
16:57It weighs, it's heavy.
16:59It weighs like 2,800 pounds, but it has HVAC and a stereo and ride command and room for five people
17:06and all of their stuff, and you can put a rooftop tent on it.
17:09I've waxed lyrical about it a ton of times, and Zach has kind of been sitting here.
17:15Well, in my defense, we had the two-seat version earlier this year.
17:20We took it out to Portsmouth Island, North Carolina, had a good time camping out of it.
17:23And, you know, it performed fine.
17:25It's just I didn't really see why you wouldn't necessarily go for something like an Armax
17:30or a General or something along those lines, especially since Yamaha now offers a closed cab option for the Armax.
17:37I think, you know, we're going to take this thing out and wheel it around tomorrow and have a good time with it,
17:43but I think just having it in the shop now, the five-seat version makes a lot more sense.
17:49Yes, it really does.
17:50Like a lot more sense.
17:50And part of that is just how configurable the interior is.
17:54So, yeah, you've got the closed lockable sort of hatch area in the back.
17:58That's awesome.
17:59Big glass, you know, hatch access, that's all great.
18:04The seat backs fold down, so you have even more room.
18:07So if you've just got two dudes and a bunch of camping gear, throw all that stuff in there, you're good to go.
18:12The seat bench, the rear seat bench folds up.
18:15So if you want to stuff stuff down in there, whether that's guns or coolers or ammo boxes or whatever,
18:22it's going to be secure.
18:23It's not going to go anywhere down there.
18:24It makes a lot of sense.
18:25It's really adaptable.
18:26And that rear bench flips 60-40, so you can still have one person in the back seat.
18:31And it's worth saying the floor below the bench is completely flat.
18:35It's almost as if Polaris thought of this.
18:37You can get a lock and ride system for the floor so that you can really strap down a cooler.
18:42And it's 28 inches deep.
18:43So the rear box is 36 inches deep with the seat back up, and the floor is 28 inches deep.
18:49So even if you don't fold the seat backs down, there's a ton, a ton of room in this thing.
18:54You know, we've got the North Star, so HVAC, so both heat and air conditioning, vent.
19:00That's great.
19:01A bang in stereo.
19:02There's a subwoofer the size of my chest in the sort of center console, so the thing sounds absolutely great.
19:07Speaking of sound, one of my biggest complaints about the 2024 model that we had out in North Carolina was just how loud that thing was inside.
19:16And you all have been talking to us and saying that, man, the 2025 is much, much better.
19:20I've got to be honest, I did not believe you at all.
19:24It makes a serious difference.
19:26We were driving the thing around here at the shop.
19:27But when we measured the two-seat, the 2024 sound levels, it put out like 115, 120 decibels.
19:35That is an insane amount of noise.
19:37I think that's equivalent to like a loud concert, basically.
19:40So really, if you're in a 2024 model, you should be having hearing predictions.
19:44Yeah, it's earplugged territory.
19:45Even if you're wearing the helmet while you're riding.
19:47Ripping around in this 2025 model, 85 decibels inside.
19:51That is a massive cut in noise.
19:53I mean, keep in mind, decibels are like a logarithmic scale.
19:57So it's not like a linear path.
19:59Yeah, like 85 is way, way quieter than 120.
20:02So it makes a massive difference.
20:04They've really done their work.
20:05Hats off to Polaris.
20:06I'm genuinely shepherded.
20:07Yeah, it's super impressive, too, because they wouldn't have put, when they put the ADV model out to market, it was loud in there.
20:16I talked to some Polaris brass who said, look, we know it's loud in there, but the problem is we're not sure how to make it quieter.
20:23You know, it's a huge box with an engine underneath it.
20:26And a lot of glass.
20:27And a lot of glass.
20:28So it's a really tough area to quiet down.
20:30So I don't know what they did, but it really worked.
20:34So hats off to them.
20:34Yeah, I mean, you know, it has a super nice headliner.
20:37That certainly helps to soften some of the noise inside.
20:40You know, I was thinking, well, maybe it's because the four seat, you know, the front passengers are farther away from the engine.
20:47It's not true.
20:47We threw the decibel meter in the back, and it's just as quiet in the back as it is up front, which is super impressive.
20:53Yeah, I mean, to me, that solves one of my biggest issues with the thing, which is like, okay, well, this is supposed to be an ADV, an Overland machine.
21:00You're supposed to be able to spend five, six hours in this machine.
21:02But if it's 120 decibels in there, you don't want to spend 30 minutes in it.
21:06Well, this thing is considerably quieter.
21:09I can absolutely spend all day in it and have no problem.
21:12Yeah, I did spend five hours in the previous generation, and it was...
21:16How's the tinnitus?
21:17Yeah, noise was the biggest complaint.
21:19Noise was the biggest, biggest complaint.
21:21So hats off to them.
21:23I'm really excited to let you get out and rip around in it tomorrow.
21:25Yeah, I mean, the initial impressions, okay, 114 horsepower, 2,700 pounds, 2,800?
21:342,800 pounds dry.
21:36That's without fuel, without anything.
21:38She feels a little sluggy.
21:39Yeah.
21:40You know, and again, like, this isn't a sport rig.
21:42I should be entirely clear.
21:44This isn't...
21:45It's sort of like a dual sport rig, which, you know, it's not just like a go out and go as fast as you can.
21:52My biggest issue...
21:53I keep saying biggest issue.
21:55I have many biggest issues, side-by-sides aside.
21:59The XD-1500 exists.
22:01A really great three-cylinder, a steel-built transmission, lots of power, lots of torque.
22:07It seems like the perfect power plant for this machine, and that's not what we get in the Expedition.
22:12Yeah, that's true.
22:13I will say this.
22:14Once you get it up on plane, once you get out onto the trail and you start ripping, it carries momentum well.
22:19Sure.
22:19And that engine is super characterful, and even with all that weight and length to haul around,
22:24it doesn't dampen the character too much.
22:26So you've got a cool...
22:27The engine is cool, and it doesn't feel as sluggish once you're up and moving.
22:31It feels a little bit more sprightly than it does off the line.
22:34But you're absolutely right.
22:35And there's another way to cure the noise complaint, right?
22:37Like, put that quiet Ranger XD-1500 motor in there.
22:41That thing is remarkably quiet, even in the rig it's designed to go in.
22:45And so this one, it would just make so much sense.
22:48Yeah, that's really what I would like to see in, you know, sort of the mid-cycle or even next-generation Expedition.
22:53Absolutely.
22:53Make use of that power plant.
22:55Yeah, yeah.
22:55So, I'm excited.
22:57I mean, tomorrow it's supposed to be chilly.
22:58It's supposed to be 45, 50 degrees by the afternoon.
23:01Perfect.
23:02Really, really perfect weather for ripping around in a closed-cap rig.
23:06Absolutely.
23:06So, it should be fun.
23:07Yeah.
23:07All right.
23:08Well, I believe that brings us to the end of episode four.
23:13That is a wrap for this week.
