00:00No, a Danish politician didn't seek Russia's help to keep Greenland.
00:08Denmark's intelligence services have said that the Kremlin was behind a recent disinformation operation targeting a Danish lawmaker.
00:18The campaign first surfaced in January as Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to seize control of Greenland,
00:26an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark, straining relations between Washington and Copenhagen.
00:32False online claims alleged that Carsten Hung, a Danish left-wing lawmaker, had asked Moscow to assist Denmark to prevent the U.S. from annexing Greenland.
00:46They included a doctored Facebook post allegedly published by Hung that said,
00:51In a situation of extreme escalation and tension, we have to take extreme measures and ask for help from Russia to solve this problem.
01:01Hung has denounced the claims as fake news.
01:03The Danish Defense Intelligence Service now says the fabricated social media post was created by an online influencer known for promoting pro-Russian narratives
01:14and who is linked to a larger influence network working on behalf of Russia.
01:19Copenhagen also says it's part of the Kremlin's strategy to undermine Western unity
01:25and was also intended to sway the outcome of Greenland's election in March.
01:31The campaign is a reminder that Greenland is often caught in the crossfire when geopolitical tensions between world powers rise.
01:39The island is a hotbed of resources crucial in the geopolitical race for economic dominance
01:44and its strategic position in the Arctic makes it vulnerable to foreign interference.
