Trump orders 100% tariff on foreign-made movies to save 'dying' Hollywood

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (May 4) announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the country, saying the American movie industry was dying a "very fast death" due to the incentives that other countries were offering to lure filmmakers.   Trump said he was authorising the relevant government agencies, such as the Department of Commerce, to immediately begin the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all films produced abroad that are then sent into the United States. 00:00The movie tariffs, what they've done is other nations have been stealing the movies, the movie-making capabilities from the United States.

00:15And I said to a couple of people, what do you think? I've done some very strong research over the last week.

00:21And we're making very few movies now. Hollywood is being destroyed.

00:25Now, you have an incompetent, grossly incompetent governor that allowed that to happen.

00:30So I'm not just blaming other nations, but other nations, a lot of them, have stolen our movie in this.

00:37And I'm saying, if they're not willing to make a movie inside the United States, then we should have a tariff on movies that come in.

00:45And not only that, governments are actually giving big money. I mean, they're supporting them financially.

00:50So that's sort of a threat to our country, in a sense.

00:53And it's been a very popular thing. I can tell you one thing. Movie-makers love it.
