Israel has a "multi-layered" air defence system to protect against missile attacks. Overview in videographic. VIDEOGRAPHIC
Transcript
00:00To defend itself against missile attacks, Israel has put in place a multi-layered air
00:12defence system. The first level of protection, the Iron Dome, is designed to counter rocket
00:19attacks of missiles of short range up to 70 kilometres. Ten mobile batteries are spread
00:24around the country. Radars detect enemy fire. The type of missile is identified and its
00:31trajectory is analysed. A computer program calculates the probable point of impact. If
00:36it is in a populated zone, the system decides to intercept it. The targets are thus shot
00:42down in mid-flight by the interceptor missiles fired by the battery. The Israeli army says
00:4875-90% of attempted interceptions are successful, at an estimated cost of $50,000 per shot.
00:58The other levels of protection operate in a similar way, but their interception range is
01:02larger. The intermediate system, called David's Sling, targets long-range rockets and cruise
01:09missiles with a range of 40-300 kilometres. The next level of air defence is the Arrow system.
01:17The Arrow 3 interceptor targets ballistic missiles with a range extending up to 2,400 kilometres.
01:24It can counter missiles beyond the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of more than 100 kilometres.
