00:00from across Australia everyday pianists of all ages do you mind me asking how
00:09old you are 103 and all walks of life you know when I'm at home I'm actually
00:17quite introverted sat down at our public piano how much do you love your
00:25classical music to share their stories I don't know if I would still be here if I
00:31didn't have the piano because it was that refuge and it was an outlet and their
00:35unique connection to the world's favorite instrument we actually met at a public
00:39piano
00:44but what they didn't know was that at each of our five public locations what global
00:50jazz sensation Harry Connick jr this exceeded every expectation I had and
00:56Australia's own classical genius Andrea Lamb were also watching on there was so
01:01much heart in it people felt it tasked with curating a very special concert at
01:08one of the country's most revered venues I love that it's not about competition or
01:13who's better it's simply about the stories and their relationship with the
01:18piano from each location Harry and Andrea were able to choose one pianist to
01:24perform giving them the opportunity of a lifetime
01:28Stefania oh my god thank you I'm still a bit overwhelmed right now John congratulations
01:35I think Canada means everything it's my superpower grace music saved my life so
01:44to be able to play I think I'm like in a bit of shock DJ I feel honored
01:49gincenzo I think my bass maker just skipped a bit talk about five completely
01:55different performances how fun is this gonna be it's gonna be amazing I can't
01:59wait together our amateur pianist will headline a special life-changing concert
02:06hello and welcome to the beautiful city recital hall I'm not dreaming come on I just
02:12heard the biggest noise from the crowd we can do this team a celebration of the
02:19sheer power of the piano I love it we're so proud of you guys ladies and
02:25gentlemen please welcome to the stage our incredible
02:28it's been just a few weeks since the pianists first played our public piano and for our five
02:43concert debutants it's now only seven days until curtain are you kidding me Sydney
02:49harbour the the harbour bridge there's a tugboat out there this is unbelievable that this has to be one
02:57of the greatest rehearsal spots in the world I'm not kidding so today John nice to see you again
03:03something man Harry and Andrea will begin mentoring their chosen five what an amazing moment with the
03:13goal of making these amateur street pianists concert pianists I am feeling very excited Andrea is the
03:24greatest Australian pianist and I want to be like that when I grow up hi Grace how are you nervous oh
03:33please don't be working one-on-one with Harry is insane I grew up listening to a lot of his music so
03:39I'm really excited and nervous but also like please don't judge me Melbourne Southern Cross Station was
03:48the first time we got to meet the newly engaged grace is your fiance here oh he's handsome guy he looks
03:56so proud and she revealed the huge impact piano and songwriting had on her life I wrote maybe then
04:05during recovery from an eating disorder songwriting in the piano was the main thing to help me recover
04:14because it was about talking to my future self letting her know that it's gonna be so much better when
04:20you get to the other side but being selected for the concert isn't the only exciting news for grace I just got
04:33married what yeah did you really Saturday let me see that ring oh my gosh I'm married the wedding
04:45was really good so yeah best day of my life as soon as the wedding was over I was like ah I'm so relaxed
04:53and I've not been stressed about this until like right then oh really it all kind of came flooding in
04:59yeah I've never played in front of an audience that big so I'm really worried that it's just gonna be
05:04terrifying honestly I feel like I shouldn't even be here okay let's change that way of thinking I want
05:11you to celebrate yourself and realize that this is a start of a brand new chapter grace she's nervous
05:17but I think it's really about giving her the best opportunity to feel supported and loved so in
05:23Melbourne you played an original song maybe then is that what you're thinking about playing in Sydney
05:30yeah I guess I want to play it again and see if I can do it better okay awesome let's let's take a look
05:36at this and see and see what we got grace's song requires a repeated note ding ding ding ding ding
05:48ding ding that's a very hard thing for any musician to do is to keep a steady pace one thing I would
05:55suggest is when you when you're playing I can't remember exactly the rhythm but you're going
06:06that has to be rock solid on when you play are you hearing this with sort of a drum sort of thing
06:12just a way to kind of keep the time to have some sort of percussive element like a kick drum to hold on
06:26to bump bump there's also the symbolism of maybe a heartbeat and if we had a choir come in there
06:34too saying maybe then singing the lyrics beneath you even when I write the song parts of it it's
06:41like just me talking to myself and I'm alone and other parts of it is like you know so those parts
06:46of it see that grace that's all the extra voices that's fantastic you know that could be really
06:51really strong that's gonna be crazy a whole choir wow just like looking back I wrote the song at the
07:00end of my bed but like I would never have guessed that I'd be here now I'm sharing it with thousands
07:05of people oh don't think about it that's crazy hi hello it's so good to see you again we're very
07:17excited to meet Andrea and also very honored to have lessons with her at Sydney's central station we
07:25witnessed a remarkable man named DJ classically trained DJ was on the path to becoming a concert
07:34pianist but while in his early 20s DJ suffered a stroke being not able to play was very depressing
07:46and very boring miraculously he retaught himself how to play the piano with just his left hand
07:54when I could play piano again I feel like I got my voice back I feel so lucky to be in the same orbit as
08:08this man I still getting used to feeling that I am a winner not a survivor
08:20yeah he's so excited yeah one once he got the game back wow yeah he says oh I have a like opportunity to
08:32play playing the sticky recital ball and I would say wow yes uh-huh so I wanted to ask what you're
08:39thinking of playing the piece I'm going to play is Godofsky's Prelude and Fugue on the name of B-A-C-H
08:51excellent it's one of my treasure pieces DJ grew up always having this dream this was his path he was
08:59going to be a concert pianist so it was so exciting for us to give him this opportunity
09:04being able to play as such a big call as a city recital is like a second chance for me
09:17DJ is putting a lot of pressure on himself because this is a dream scenario he gets to play music in
09:31front of a big audience again this I wanted it wasn't the stuffing up at all it wasn't that wasn't
09:39that wasn't the thing that bothered me at all you will make mistakes Andrea taught me everyone make
09:45mistakes but they will survive being nervous by focusing on the music
09:53it's all suspensions and circle of is
09:57it's not in any rush but it should be just like enjoying it like you're just in this moment
10:08there was a hint of nerves and with nerves they don't just go away because we want them to
10:17so I'm hoping that it will translate but you never know because when you get onto a big stage all bets are
10:25rough Vincenzo how are things it's been very tough yeah but fortunately you know music has helped me
10:38participating in this has helped me because it's given me something to focus on Vincenzo came along to our
10:45public piano in Sydney's Chinatown where he shared some heartbreaking news about Elaine his wife of 50 years
10:52tell me what's happened my wife passed away um beginning of the month I'm very sorry my wife Elaine she
11:05was the love of my life real love comes over time it comes from all the things you share throughout your life
11:14with Elaine's passing the family have all been incredibly supportive I'm so hungry
11:23I'm so hungry I'm hungry
11:24Buon appetito
11:25it's tough but Elaine will want me to keep going
11:33I think the concept is a good distraction for me it's giving me more incentive to keep playing
11:44and I wish Elaine had been here with me to be able to to to witness it
11:56what song have you decided to play um I'm going to play memory from cats amazing it's one of my
12:06favorites one of her favorites too would you mind playing a little bit for me I'll be happy to play
12:10for you oh to my best pieces it's a very melancholic pace it reflects emotions of longing of something lost and
12:32and you you think of the good times you think of of life as it was
12:37yeah man sorry messed up a little bit in the middle well that's that's the beauty about playing
12:47from your heart you can't really make any mistakes you know in addition to musically enhancing what is
12:54already a beautiful piece of music I think it's really important that he plays it in a way that he
13:01thinks is fit to honor Elaine have you played with strings before no well I tell you playing
13:07with with real strings is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have it would be my honor to
13:14provide strings to accompany you that would be wonderful at this performance can we do that for
13:21you we can have in the string quartet wow I have never done that before it'd be amazing Vincenzo that
13:30that audience is gonna feel very lucky to hear you play well I just have to keep the butterflies at bay
13:36yeah I have to be careful that the emotions of the piece don't get to me too much
13:42thank you for sharing this incredible gift with all of us it's my pleasure
13:46grazie senor prego thank you so much yes sir absolutely thank you for your help thanks Vincenzo
13:53at Melbourne's Preston market we said hello to 12 year old Stefania and learnt that her ambition
14:02wasn't just limited to playing the piano I am planning on being a doctor yeah a cardiologist
14:08before stunning Harry and Andrea with a burst of Bach
14:12and it's not Bach do not pronounce it as Bach it is Bach I found Bach always too challenging when
14:22I was a sage and Stefania is doing amazingly how have you been preparing for the concert practice practice practice practice I'm trying to prepare as best as I can for the final
14:38concert and that um means reading books on the composer hello um do you have any books on Clara Schumann when I
14:48read I know what the composer's feeling when they wrote that piece and I want to express those feelings to my audience so I think preparation is the key
15:01so what will you be playing today I'll be playing Clara Schumann's variations on a theme by Robert Schumann opus 20
15:08wonderful I think she's the unsung hero of piano music I totally agree with you on fangirling on Clara Schumann
15:15so I would love to hear you play this
15:28Stefania's playing was beautifully controlled well thought out everything was executed perfectly
15:34but music is all about storytelling and I think that we can work together to really make that storytelling alive
15:40you know this piece so well you know it inside out you know the phrasing you know the structure and now
15:48I kind of want you to throw that all out the window a little bit like really go for things and let it
15:53fly let's see how that goes okay what I want from her is a little bit more freedom and a little bit more
16:01uncertainty everything in her life is so controlled and so thought out I want her to be a little bit
16:08like a 12 year old can you do me a favor can you just like run around the room for a second yeah I'll
16:14join you here all right okay okay ready ah just run there we go there's the laugh see okay so now we've
16:25got the blood pumping Andrew wants me to put that energy into the piece I want more of that laughter when
16:31you're playing okay that was lovely you have a lovely laugh thank you
16:52I'm really hoping that she can
16:55break through this control that she has and really just be the story and really own it and fly with it
17:04John man I haven't seen you since uh since the train station we first met John with his dad at
17:12Sydney's metro station where he opened up about his unhappy school life
17:17I'm standing here on the ground I couldn't have gotten through that time period without the piano and the
17:28support of my family especially my dad and I feel very lucky to be in such a supportive unit
17:34resolution I'm gonna cry too
17:38happiness oh he's so good things have been dark for too long his dad can't stop smiling
17:48thank you so much playing for the people in the train station was one of the best things I've ever
17:59done I think two years ago I was completely lost I feel like this experience especially this concert
18:06is definitely something that's going to teach me a lot and it's going to help me prepare for the future
18:14for me and my dad music is the thing that we really bond over and it's the thing that connects us
18:21so going into the concert making him proud is the number one thing that is on my mind so I'm trying
18:29to make sure that I'm on my a-game for this show so what's been going on well I've been practicing
18:38the song that I'll be performing Never Tears Apart by NXS
18:41the great thing about the concert is that we have a bunch of unique performers that really
18:54kind of represents the whole spirit of what this show is about
19:00and we have nothing like John so I think he's going to bring down the house
19:04yeah cool so when you play at the concert what would you like to hear behind you obviously we
19:12have just the piano but or do we because I'm thinking like it would be great with a band
19:18we're going to give you drums bass guitar okay the whole thing sounds awesome I'm so excited oh my gosh
19:26having a full band is so cool I'm very excited but I'm very nervous at the same time
19:32but the time is everything to me you know what I'm saying I mean whatever you're playing
19:37I need to feel this even if it's super soft
19:44yeah there's good and there's bad about playing with other instruments I mean you have to allow
19:49room for other musicians to play you have to kind of open your ears and play in a different way so for
19:53John who hasn't done that before it's going to be a little bit of a challenge I want to feel that
19:59when you get behind the wheel it's like okay that's that's the captain right there driving the ship
20:08tricky side is if he's not listening it could be a train wreck so uh we just have to make sure that
20:14he's he's aware of the other musicians on stage
20:22i promise i'll get it right next time no no you did a great job nice work man
20:31with just 36 hours until showtime this morning our fabulous five will experience the venue for the
20:38first time as we begin rehearsals for our very special concert this is amazing this is the first
20:46time you've all met and cyprian who's stefania's father thank you for being with us thank you for
20:51having me here you know you are about to share this incredible experience together we are going to be
20:57with you every step of the way so shall we head inside the city recital hall to kick off rehearsals
21:04come on with me let's head to the stage door how old are you i'm 12. no way it's just getting a little
21:11too real now amazing yes getting very real being able to play the city recital hall is a dream this
21:20experience means a lot to me stage door enter here come on come on come on secret shortcut
21:31the opportunity to play my own song at the venue like city recital hall was like wow
21:35confidence is happening to me this is taking us out onto the stage
21:41come on out here we go
21:48wow
21:52this is amazing come on in hey guys hello everyone whoa what do you think crazy hi dj i remember
22:04the first time i played at city recital hall i couldn't believe it i was like i've made it
22:09and i'm super excited that all of these pianists will have that experience
22:20check check more check check now i'm nervous yeah
22:23on the stage right now is a band and it's getting so real oh
22:31john come sit with us
22:32all right let's bring grace in come on ready grace how are you nervous my main concern about the
22:47concert is just like that dealing with an eating disorder i always think that i'm never quite good
22:54enough when i first met her she's just sat down and told us this personal story and here she's with his
22:59choir it's just beautiful well take your time and give yourself a chance to warm up
23:07i couldn't hear her voice very much yeah she was feeling really nervous
23:20so cold wear my jacket yeah you know wear it wear it grace she's nervous but she has a lot to offer
23:33and she's doing something that's unique to her she needs to remember that and to celebrate that
23:38i know you're not feeling good but it's a special song you're a special young woman and believe in that
23:54i've seen it all and done it all from adversity sometimes beautiful things come out
24:08freaking great grace she's so amazing and with the choir and the drums
24:14and the lighting she i told her she's better than taylor swift did you write that yeah oh it's so
24:20beautiful i still i'm very nervous to play in front of so many people i definitely feel like am i
24:28going to be the odd one out there like when i play are people going to be thinking oh she shouldn't be
24:33there okay dj the stage is ready for you yes dj come on dj i am excited to play in such a big call
24:45but i have to do it well otherwise uh i'd make mistakes and you fail
24:58i can do that with your hands
25:03he just looks so like happy up there i think that's like his special place like where he belongs
25:09where it belongs wow it was great it breathed and all of the all of the articulations were great
25:27trying to make it humorous perfect that's exactly what it needed
25:32everyone this is vincenzo hello playing city rosado hall it's i mean exciting and overwhelming
25:47you're at the beginning of your love story and he had this incredible 50-year-old story
25:52i could tell when vincenzo was playing his emotions were sort of trumping everything else and he had a
26:07tendency to kind of speed up i think you have more time than you think right i wasn't 100 happy with
26:14but my playing i felt like i lost a bit of confidence i know what a player perfect for elaine
26:22yeah okay so vincenzo yeah i think we could slow it down a bit i think so
26:32for some reason i think i started doubting myself and when you doubt yourself you make mistakes
26:38i think like just breathe and slow down and know that everyone's with you yeah thank you so much
26:46nice job incenzo beautiful thank you guys that was funny to hug
27:00okay okay stefania are you ready okay oh my god this stage is the biggest one i've ever played on
27:18i feel like i'm terrible
27:21practice makes me for years i'll never play that wow stefania's got everything she just needs to
27:28loosen up don't worry about the notes like just like sort of throw it to the wind okay see what
27:34happens let's try it it felt overwhelming at first but it was actually pretty fun
27:45i kind of like that it was very defiant you play like a young cardiologist
27:58all right john you ready yeah i'm ready come on john
28:02the captain yeah what's up captain good how are you good to see you man hi how are you doing good to
28:08see you well this is the band everybody this is john hi everyone i'm john nice to meet you oh my gosh
28:15i'm so nervous right now it's getting so real great so if everybody's ready to go let's just run one
28:21when you're playing with a band timing is incredibly important so harry told me about taking control of the
28:27performance and really being the captain of the ship
28:34time is never going to be exactly right so he he needs to be the one to demonstrate with his body
28:39when to come in i know that their time is rock solid you have the least amount of experience so just
28:50make sure that you have that you have that time count count really hard and oftentimes that's the
28:55hardest thing to do when you get nervous you sort of forget that there's other people around you
29:08perfect
29:14i feel like being a groupie
29:15well the big night has finally arrived everything has been leading up to this moment
29:27our very special concert is here it's so exciting guys look how many people there are
29:33oh my gosh i see my dad this is my mom hello i'm looking at you
29:47this is happening we are finally here
29:50oh yeah this was completely different to the train station better atmosphere i think
29:54it's just mesmerizing so i'm actually so thrilled to be here we are so shaky now still like so nervous
30:03for him he's so brave to be in this prestigious venue and watch my son perform i feel really honored
30:11very proud you're ready yeah i'm so happy for him the piano brings him comfort and this couldn't have
30:18happened at a better time for him i don't have my notes in here i should have and my notes too can i
30:25get my little notes hello how are you feeling oh how are you doing you all look amazing you look so

33:07There you go.
33:08Thank you so much, you're a lifesaver.
33:21Wow, now I'm like so nervous.
33:27I just heard the biggest noise from the crowd.
33:57And that just immediately got me so excited.
34:01Now that is how you open a show.
34:07What's that?
34:08I hear you want more.
34:09You want more?
34:10Three-minute call for Grace.
34:12Now it's time to meet the real stars of the show.
34:15Our first performer this evening is a courageous young woman who truly plays from the heart.
34:21She got married just last week and she's actually delayed her honeymoon so that she can be here with us tonight.
34:27I'm thrilled to introduce you to Grace.
34:32My name is Grace Antony.
34:35So, what do you do during the day, Grace?
34:38At the moment, most of my time is spent planning my wedding.
34:42Just planning your wedding.
34:43Having a good time.
34:45Good, good.
34:46You're going to be amazing.
34:51I've seen you rehearse.
34:52You've got this.
34:53You're so good.
34:54You're going to be great.
34:57Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, Grace.
35:01Hi, everyone.
35:16My name is Grace Butler.
35:18As of last week.
35:19So, oh, he's right there.
35:28So, the song I'm playing tonight is called Maybe Then.
35:32I am playing this song for anyone who looks in the mirror and only sees their flaws and doesn't like the person looking back at them because you are worth so much more than just your body.
35:45I think she's going to be okay.
35:50Oh, my God.
35:51Oh, it's beautiful.
36:06Maybe then.
36:10Oh, and I've seen it all and done it all then.
36:15And maybe I, I wouldn't have to fall, wouldn't have to fall so high.
36:23Or maybe when I'm pretty enough, I'm pretty enough for them.
36:31But standing here after climbing up this mountain for so long.
36:40Oh, I can see all the stars, all the stars.
36:45They cry out, and they cry out.
36:55To stand, stand up to your demons.
37:00And they cry out, and they cry out.
37:04Her beauty in her voice, it's just extraordinary.
37:06She's got like such a...
37:08Material, she's got a unique voice.
37:11Absolutely.
37:11And they cry out, and they cry out.
37:18But you don't hear them.
37:26Maybe then.
37:28When I've seen it all and done it all, then maybe I, I wouldn't have to fall, wouldn't have to fall so high.
37:44Or maybe when, I'm pretty enough, I'm pretty enough for them.
37:52And I'm pretty much worse than me.
37:57Ooh, hey!
37:58You did awesome.
38:11She is amazing!
38:23Isn't she heartbreaking? So beautiful. Another round of applause, please. The amazing, amazing Grace.
38:31You make me cry.
38:33Well done, Grace.
38:36Incredible. You did it.
38:41Our next performer was born to play the piano.
38:45Call for DJ.
38:47I'd like to introduce you to DJ Ha.
38:50DJ!
38:58Come on, DJ!
39:00DJ!
39:07Hi, I'm DJ Ha.
39:08I'm pretty nervous at the moment.
39:14But if I concentrate on enough, the music will guide me through.
39:26You're not gonna believe this guy.
39:28You're not gonna believe it.
39:48That's good.
39:49You're not gonna believe it.
39:50That's good.
40:12Wow!
40:13He's gonna hear everything.
41:21He's quite extraordinary, isn't he?
41:24He's so good.
41:29Well, deep underground inside a metro station, a teenager strutted into our lives.
41:37It's my great pleasure to introduce you to John.

42:06Come on, John.
42:07Oh, look at him.
42:08He's waving to the crowd.
42:09He's owning it.
42:10Oh, he's feeling it.
42:11He's feeling it.
42:12He's feeling it.
42:13He's feeling it.
42:14Hello.
42:15My name is John Yanko.
42:16Thank you all so much for coming.
42:17You know, high school for me wasn't easy.
42:18And the thing that really got me through was music and my family.
42:33So, I'd like to dedicate this performance to two of my heroes.
42:40The first in excess.
42:42And the second, my dad.
42:45All right.
42:46That's what I'm talking about.
42:48I like the way he took control, you know.
42:51Nervous or not, he looks like he's in control.
43:03Oh, he's gonna, he's gonna be so good.
43:26I love your precious heart.
43:31I, I was standing.
43:38You were there.
43:41Two worlds collided.
43:45And they could never tear us apart.
43:51Oh, he's getting into it.
43:56Yeah, I know it.
44:17I, I was standing, it's you again.
44:26Two worlds collided, and they can never, ever, tear us apart.
44:41Come on.
44:43Come on.
44:44Come on.
44:45Come on, baby.
44:47Come on.
44:49Come on.
44:50Come on.
44:51Come on, baby.
44:53Come on, baby!
45:23Wow, let's hear it for John.
45:41Amazing.
45:43That was crazy.
45:46Oh, my God.
45:48Oh, my God.
45:50That was the best I've heard you play.
45:53Well done.
45:54Our next performer this evening is a 12-year-old classical maestro.
45:59She stunned the audience, she stunned our experts, she'll stun you too.
46:03You're going to love her.
46:05You'll be fine.
46:11Ladies and gentlemen, this is Stefania.
46:15There she is.
46:18Oh, she's amazing.
46:22Amazing.
46:24Good evening, everyone.
46:26I am Stefania, and tonight I will be performing a piece by Schumann.
46:41And it's not Robert Schumann whom everybody knows.
46:45This is a piece by Robert's beloved wife, Clara Schumann.
46:51And I think Clara Schumann is one of the...
46:55Don't you can talk.
46:58I think we all know that.
47:00I'll be playing this for all the women of classical piano out there, Andrea included, but mostly for Clara, my all-time heroine.
47:10I hope you enjoy.
47:13Unbelievable.
47:15He's my hero.
47:16He's crazy.
47:40She's doing good.
47:47She's doing good.
47:59It's just beautiful.
48:10She's dead.
48:11She's...
48:12the prodigy.
48:13I don't know if she's too old.
48:14She's...
48:15...prodigy.
48:16But even, she is like...
48:17She's too old.
48:18She's too old.
48:19She's a prodigy.
48:20She's a prodigy.
48:40So whatever you did with Stefania, when you mentored her, you brought out something.
48:47Because she did so much already.
48:50She did so much.
49:04So let's sing.
49:49He's the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life.
