A maniacal Airforce general creates a machine that controls the weather. He's aghast when it backfires and a storm heads straight for LA. Can plucky Dr Ron Young save the day? Ron has been hired by the military for his expertise with weather, but he suspects their intentions are less than noble.

00:02:35We have some sponsors.
00:02:39Wind speeds are now in excess of 140 knots.
00:02:43I'm sorry, sir.
00:02:47We have got to do something before the situation gets any further out of control.
00:02:49Further out of control?
00:02:51I don't think that's possible, Doctor.
00:02:53We have a Category 5 hurricane out there headed straight for Miami Beach.
00:02:55If we don't reacquire that generator, I don't have to tell you what's gonna happen.
00:02:59We have everything within our power.
00:03:01We need to activate the self-destruct before it's too late.
00:03:07Alright, Doctor.
00:03:09Activate self-destruct.
00:03:13Yes, sir.
00:03:17Doctor, I've lost all contact with the generator.
00:03:23Doctor, I'm unable to reroute the self-destruct command.
00:03:25Should we scramble a fighter out of Pensacola?
00:03:27For what?
00:03:29To shoot it down, sir.
00:03:31Stand by, people. We are not calling anyone for help.
00:03:35Captain Taylor, General Roberts here. Do you copy?
00:03:37Yes, sir.
00:03:39Captain, I am ordering you to fly into the eye of that hurricane.
00:03:41And to reacquire that generator using the optical system.
00:03:45Do you copy?
00:03:46Sir.
00:03:47The wind speed is passing the structural integrity of the plane.
00:03:51Captain Taylor, I have given you a direct order. Do you copy?
00:03:55Yes, sir.
00:03:57Very well.
00:04:03Hold on.
00:04:07Going into the eye. Hang on!

00:04:31We are going down!
00:04:33I've got major system failures here!
00:04:35We are going down! Mayday!
00:04:39The plane is gone, sir.
00:04:46Disintegrated.
00:04:58Wind speed just passed 180 knots, heading north-northwest.
00:05:01Looks like it'll make land fog just south of Miami.
00:05:04All right, people. Pack it up and move it out of here.
00:05:07Q5 security measures are now in effect.
00:05:10Notify the retrieval team. On the double...
00:05:24Dr. Platt?
00:05:28Dr. Platt, you've got to get going.
00:05:33Dr. Platt?
00:05:35Dr. Platt?
00:05:38Dr. Platt?
00:05:40Yeah, right.

00:05:58Dr. Platt.
00:06:00Dr. Platt.
00:06:01Dr. Platt.
00:06:02south of Miami in the Holmstead area.
00:06:08...we're in major pressure of damage throughout South Florida.
00:06:17We're here in Fort Laudertale.
00:06:19Entering the Midland port engine flying glass at the point.
00:06:22Whoo!
00:06:26...and they're evacuating...
00:06:28...and they're in Midland as a pounding engine.
00:06:32...and the meteorologists are telling us it could continue well into the night.
00:06:42We don't like the engine to be in the engine for almost an hour now.
00:06:50...how pounding the shipingly savage force.
00:06:57...and we saw two.
00:06:59...maybe three cars that were just picked up and thrown across the street.
00:07:05...the few blocks south of here had its roots torn off just a few blocks ago.
00:07:09...South Florida town are saying they have never seen a hurricane like this before.
00:07:13...the violence of these conditions right now is just impossible to describe.
00:07:17It's difficult to believe this wasteland before us was once a thriving middle-class neighborhood.
00:07:27Nothing in sight has escaped undamaged.
00:07:29To the billions of dollars, it's clear that Hurricane Andrew is shaping up to be the most costly natural disaster in American history.
00:07:39While some say it is a miracle that only 44 people have been reported dead, to the families of the victims, the loss is immeasurable.
00:07:49One hundred and forty thousand homes have been damaged or destroyed.
00:07:53One hundred and sixty thousand south Florida residents have been left homeless by the devastating power of Hurricane Andrew.
00:07:59The National Guard has been called in to preserve order as tempers have flared and signs of looting have been reported.
00:08:09As the people here cope through the wreckage of their shattered homes hoping against hope for some small fragment of the world they once knew,
00:08:17All they have left are the memories of the comfortable lives they led before Hurricane Andrew.
00:08:31Ever since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, there's been a whole new generation of these so-called killer storms.
00:08:37Which are without precedence since we started measuring these things.
00:08:41Hurricane Margaret, Typhoon Byron, Tropical Storm Jeffrey, the list goes on.
00:08:48Dr. Ernesto Vega postulates that this is all a result of global warming or the El Nino effect.
00:08:55Which is what?
00:08:57Ms. Garrett.
00:08:59An oceanic surface warming phenomenon.
00:09:02Very good.
00:09:03I'm glad someone's actually paying attention to me.
00:09:06I'll tell you though, what Dr. Vega's theory doesn't address is the following.
00:09:12The intense bursts of heat detected in the eye walls of these systems.
00:09:16Look at this.
00:09:20These are thermal satellite photos.
00:09:22Taken of Hurricane Sharon at five minute intervals.
00:09:26You can see the center of the storm.
00:09:28It's heating up.
00:09:29Very rapidly.
00:09:30Very intense.
00:09:31We've never seen anything like this before.
00:09:33You gotta wonder.
00:09:35Okay.
00:09:36We're gonna have to call it quits early today.
00:09:38Do the isobar exercises for chapter ten.
00:09:40Mr. Henwood.
00:09:41No beer on us this time.
00:09:47That's about time, my man.
00:09:49We got a storm to move.
00:09:51Whoo.
00:09:53Glad you can make it.
00:09:55I said glad you can make it.
00:09:56Glad you can make it.
00:09:57Are you ready?
00:09:58I am ready as I'll ever be ready.
00:09:59May tag away since.
00:10:04Okay.
00:10:05Let her rip.
00:10:06Generating vorticity at 65 megahertz.
00:10:08She's up and running.
00:10:09The air's still spinning at the same rate.
00:10:10Brian, crank it up.
00:10:11As high as it'll go.
00:10:12I don't think that a lithium crystal can take much more to count from him.
00:10:13It's getting a little rough up here, Scotty.
00:10:14Quit screwing around.
00:10:15Just crank it up.
00:10:16Look at that.
00:10:17I don't think that a lithium crystal can take much more to count from him.
00:10:19It's getting a little rough up here, Scotty.
00:10:20Quit screwing around, just crank it up.
00:10:21Okay, well, that's too much.
00:10:22Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
00:10:23I'm here for five-zero two nine Charlie.
00:10:24This is Miami Center.
00:10:25Radar is showing you around that.
00:10:26You are right.
00:10:27Okay, I'm here.
00:10:28I am.
00:10:29You are right.
00:10:30I'm here.
00:10:31She's going to be right here.
00:10:32You are right now.
00:10:33I'm going to be right now.
00:10:34I'm going to be on this.
00:10:36Have you?
00:10:37I am?
00:10:38I have gotãy.
00:10:39I got a new one.
00:10:40We're finally here.
00:10:41See you, Mike?
00:10:42We are?
00:10:43Go ahead.
00:10:44Okay.
00:10:45How's this going?
00:10:46November 5-0-2-9, Charlie, this is Miami Center. Radar shows you are entering restricted airspace.
00:10:51Miami Center, November 5-0-2-9, Charlie, request permission to traverse Miami airspace, over.
00:10:57Negative 2-9, Charlie, turn left to a heading of 1-7-0 to leave restricted airspace. Do you read?
00:11:02Shit! What are we gonna do?
00:11:05We can't change course. The storm's going west. We gotta stay north.
00:11:09November 5-0-2-9, Charlie, I repeat, change your heading and leave restricted airspace.
00:11:13I have a feeling that's gonna piss him off. You forgot to say over.
00:11:18Are you getting that reading? Look at that. The eye is tightening.
00:11:22It's moving.
00:11:24It's moving.
00:11:25Oh, my God. Oh, look at that. West by northwest.
00:11:29We got control of the storm.
00:11:43Oh, my God.
00:11:55Woo!
00:11:5524 degrees, brother.
00:11:57Unbelievable. You know.
00:11:58I told you. I told you.
00:11:59You know what it means.
00:12:01Larry King lives.
00:12:03Oh.
00:12:04I got it.
00:12:05Dr. Young, Wayne Baker, FAA.
00:12:10Can I see your license?
00:12:13Your license, please.
00:12:22If you ever fly again, you're going to jail.
00:12:26You got it?
00:12:28Have a nice day, son.
00:12:29Dr. Young, Dr. Neumeyer, may I have a word with you?
00:12:43See, this is good.
00:12:44You forgot to lock the door.
00:12:45I've been on the phone for the last half hour with a Mr. Baker from the FAA.
00:12:49Uh, yeah. You know what? I'm sorry. That was an accident.
00:12:51That's what happens right there.
00:12:52Well, I'm tired of your accidents.
00:12:54Not to mention your flagrant disrespect for university policy.
00:12:57I'm pulling your research grant.
00:13:00You can't do that.
00:13:01Yes, I can.
00:13:03Your ambition is going to get somebody hurt one of these days.
00:13:05I'm not going to sit around hoping it won't happen.
00:13:06Listen, Conway, if you really want to learn something, you got to take risks.
00:13:10You got to look at what we're doing here.
00:13:13I've been at this university a long time, doctor.
00:13:15I think I know what is and what isn't best for this department.
00:13:18And these risks you take in the name of research are totally inappropriate.
00:13:22Well, then I'm definitely in the wrong place.
00:13:25I'm out of here.
00:13:25Have it your way.
00:13:26Wait a minute.
00:13:27Wait a minute.
00:13:28Come on.
00:13:29Wait a minute.
00:13:29Hey, Conway.
00:13:31Come on, man.
00:13:31He's the best meteorologist that this school has ever had, and you know it.
00:13:37Ron, I don't want you to leave.
00:13:40But if that's the way you feel about it, maybe it's for the best.
00:13:44When it rains, it pours, huh, Doc?
00:13:48What are you doing, man?
00:13:49What?
00:13:50I can't afford to quit just like that, man.
00:13:52I got a wife and a kid to support.
00:13:54Don't worry about it.
00:13:55Oh, come on.
00:13:56Wait, wait.
00:13:57Who's going to hire us after all the complaints?
00:13:59I mean, what do you think?
00:14:00You think he's going to write a letter of a recommendation or something for us?
00:14:02Right.
00:14:02What do you think?
00:14:03You think he's Mr. Good Guy now?
00:14:04What?
00:14:04We're good.
00:14:05We're good?
00:14:07Yeah.
00:14:07All right, man.
00:14:09So you got it?
00:14:10You got it covered?
00:14:11Yeah.
00:14:13I'm, uh, I'm going to get us some beers.
00:14:16Right.
00:14:16All right.
00:14:17All right.
00:14:17Get some beer.
00:14:19A bunch of them.
00:14:20Hi, I'm looking for a doctor, Ron Young.
00:14:28Yeah, that's me.
00:14:30God, I've been looking all over for you.
00:14:32Listen, I'm Tom Holt.
00:14:34Zephyr Weather Dynamics.
00:14:36Good to meet you.
00:14:36But you know what?
00:14:37I'm not in the mood to chit-chat today.
00:14:38You want to talk weather?
00:14:39Just go down the hall.
00:14:40No, no, no.
00:14:40Not about the weather.
00:14:41An associate of mine read your doctoral dissertation on storm manipulation.
00:14:44Said it was really fascinating.
00:14:46Yeah, it was all right.
00:14:46Said that you and, uh, Dr. Neumeyer had been conducting some experiments around here.
00:14:51We were.
00:14:52Yeah, until just recently.
00:14:53Then we got canned.
00:14:54Well, that is my lucky day.
00:14:57Have I got a job for you?
00:15:00Are you sure that you don't want to come with me?
00:15:02What, work for the government?
00:15:04Ah, yeah.
00:15:05You know, that's not going to happen.
00:15:06You know, besides I'm an anarchist, and how many kids were kicked out of the Boy Scouts for some personal activities?
00:15:12Hey, you know, Shelly's got a nice job, and Nina's in school.
00:15:15Hey, hey, hey, save it, Beavis.
00:15:17Because Holt said they could come, too, all right?
00:15:20These guys got a real budget, real money.
00:15:22We get a real salary this time.
00:15:24Would you quit torturing me, okay?
00:15:27I wish I was going with you, okay?
00:15:28But I signed the papers.
00:15:30It's how death do me part, okay?
00:15:31I can't go!
00:15:33Well, sit down.
00:15:34Talk about it.
00:15:34You're sensitive.
00:15:36That is a typical bachelor line, man.
00:15:38You have no idea how it works.
00:15:41You are so lucky that you did not propose to...
00:15:45What?
00:15:46Oh.
00:15:46Why do you even have to say that until this very moment I forgot she moved to L.A.?
00:15:50Oh, really?
00:15:52All right, all right.
00:15:53Hey, well, tell me this.
00:15:53Why is this research institute in L.A. anyway?
00:15:56They don't have weather there.
00:15:57You tell me something.
00:15:58Why has it got to be about weather all the time?
00:16:00I'm going to Hollywood, man.
00:16:02Huh?
00:16:03All right, man.
00:16:06I'm going to miss you, brother.
00:16:07I'm going to miss you, too.
00:16:10Really?
00:16:11No, but it sounded good.
00:16:14Hey, be careful in L.A., man, because your IQ is going to go down.
00:16:17They are a clown short of a circus, my man.
00:16:24We moved storms, brother!
00:16:32Let's go!
00:16:33Let's go!
00:16:33Let's go!
00:16:37Can I help you today?
00:16:41Hi, Dr. Ron.
00:16:42You are...
00:16:43...boy that's in case.
00:16:47All right, man.
00:16:48Great.
00:16:48Thanks.
00:16:49There we go.
00:16:54You'll be issued a top-secret clearance.
00:16:56That means that you can't talk to anybody about anything you do here.
00:16:59Unless, of course, it's me.
00:17:00One of your direct supervisors.
00:17:02You understand that?
00:17:03Yeah.
00:17:04What's with the red flasher thing?
00:17:06Is there some kind of emergency?
00:17:06That's our code for an unsecured person on the premise, and that's you.
00:17:10For now.
00:17:11That'll change.
00:17:11Anytime you see that red light, you stop talking.
00:17:14You close any books you have open, turn off your computer screen.
00:17:16That way classified information is not compromised.
00:17:19You got it?
00:17:20Yeah, I think so.
00:17:21No, I hear you.
00:17:22Come in.
00:17:23Good morning, General.
00:17:24Hey, good morning.
00:17:25Let me get back to you on that.
00:17:26Bye-bye.
00:17:27Pete, Dr. Ron Young, the meteorologist I was telling you about.
00:17:30Dr. Young?
00:17:30Jim Roberts.
00:17:31I'm the, uh, what do they call me around here, Tom?
00:17:33The big Megillah, I think it is, although I don't think they mean it with any affection.
00:17:37Welcome aboard.
00:17:38Listen, I've got to run.
00:17:39I've got things to do.
00:17:40I'll leave you guys time to get appointed.
00:17:41Thank you, Tom.
00:17:42Sit down, son.
00:17:43Let me see if I can brief you on what this is all about.
00:17:45For a few years now, a group of us have been conducting tests trying to develop a technology
00:17:51to actually control storms, and we've had some success in some areas.
00:17:55We can make a storm larger or smaller if we want.
00:17:58The, uh, the seeding with silver iodide.
00:18:00Yeah, something like that.
00:18:01At any rate, in all this time, there is one part of the puzzle that still eludes us,
00:18:06and that is controlling a storm's direction, manipulating it, if you will, and that's where
00:18:12you come in.
00:18:13Maytag.
00:18:14Say again?
00:18:16Maytag.
00:18:17It's, uh, it's what I call this device that I've been working on.
00:18:19Oh, right.
00:18:20The, uh, vorticity generator?
00:18:24Yeah.
00:18:25Now, say, I've done my homework.
00:18:26I'm just not up on all the science.
00:18:28Could you brief me on this Maytag, please?
00:18:30Well, um, basically, it's like a storm magnet.
00:18:33Um, we spin the air inside the eye like a spin cycle on a washer, and this creates a low-pressure
00:18:40trough.
00:18:41Now, we know that storms follow low pressure.
00:18:43So, with this, I can basically lead the storm wherever I want it to go.
00:18:47That's fantastic.
00:18:49Yeah, it's, it's only worked on small storms thus far, but I believe, with enough time and
00:18:55money, I could make it rain in the Sahara.
00:18:58Well, I think we're on the same page, Ron.
00:19:02You mind if I call you Ron?
00:19:04No.
00:19:06Would you follow me, please?
00:19:07You know, Ron, my dream is to someday move storms as big as hurricanes to any part of the
00:19:14world.
00:19:15Do you think you could redesign old Maytag to achieve that?
00:19:18Sure.
00:19:19Yeah, I, I don't see why not.
00:19:21The only problem is how to move it around inside the eye.
00:19:23I can't very well strap it to an airplane and go into a raging hurricane.
00:19:26I think we figured that part out.
00:19:28Voila.
00:19:29That's our baby.
00:19:30Wow.
00:19:31The ion generator.
00:19:32It's a little more high tech than your Maytag, perhaps, but then we have a slightly larger
00:19:39budget to work from.
00:19:40Yeah, I guess.
00:19:42So, how does it work?
00:19:44We launch a cruise missile from a C-123.
00:19:46Wait a minute.
00:19:47A cruise missile?
00:19:48Uh-huh.
00:19:48It cost a million bucks apiece.
00:19:50Usually.
00:19:50I told you we were well funded.
00:19:52At any rate, when the missile reaches the eye of the storm, it deploys the generator suspended
00:19:56from a weather balloon, which, as you know, can stay up there for three or four days.
00:20:01Impressed?
00:20:02I am.
00:20:03Would you like to meet the genius behind all this science fiction?
00:20:06Yes, I would.
00:20:07Step this way, s'il vous plaît.
00:20:15Excuse me, Doc.
00:20:18Ron, this is Dr. Daniel Platt.
00:20:20Doc, say hello to Ron Young, our storm mover.
00:20:23Hey.
00:20:24How do you do?
00:20:25Uh, pretty good, Doctor.
00:20:26Listen, I gotta say, the work that you guys are doing here is just amazing.
00:20:30Well, thank you.
00:20:32Uh, I'll have my assistant, Jorgensen, bring you up to speed, and then perhaps you and
00:20:35I can sit down and go over some logistics, huh?
00:20:37Excuse me.
00:20:37General Roberts, sir.
00:20:38Yes, lieutenant.
00:20:39Washington, underline in your office, sir.
00:20:41All right, tell him I'll be right there.
00:20:42Sorry, guys, I'm gonna have to take this call, but I wanted you to meet Major Goodman, one
00:20:47of our top test pilots.
00:20:48You two will be working together to get your software running on board the Hurricane Hunter.
00:20:52I'll tell you what, why don't you just go out that hangar door over there and nose around
00:20:55the plane.
00:20:55I mean, the Major is usually never far away.
00:20:57I'll see you guys later.
00:20:58All right.
00:20:58I'll be seeing you, Doctor.
00:20:59All right.
00:21:05Major Goodman!
00:21:06Major Goodman!
00:21:34Major Goodman!
00:21:35Major Goodman!
00:21:36Major Goodman!
00:22:06Fooling around with the computers?
00:22:09I don't fool around.
00:22:11I'm checking this system while I wait for Major Goodman.
00:22:14Oh.
00:22:15Sorry, man.
00:22:17Don't let me get in your way.
00:22:24Oh, shit!
00:22:25What is that?
00:22:26You just activated the missile launch sequence!
00:22:28I did not!
00:22:2930 seconds to launch!
00:22:30That's impossible!
00:22:31I didn't do anything!
00:22:32Well, you can tell that to the Major later.
00:22:33Right now, that missile's getting ready to fly.
00:22:36Shit!
00:22:37Come on!
00:22:38Wait.
00:22:39Hold on.
00:22:42Get out, sir.
00:22:43You know, I didn't mean that, to do that.
00:22:51I didn't want to, you know, I wasn't trying.
00:22:56What?
00:22:56Yeah, that's real funny.
00:23:05Look, I don't know who you are, but I don't have time to screw around here.
00:23:14Just tell Major Goodman that Dr. Young was here looking for him, all right?
00:23:17Good afternoon, Major.
00:23:22Major, you are...
00:23:24Major Tanya Goodman, Senior Flight Coordinator.
00:23:27It's nice to meet you, Doctor.
00:23:30Yeah, you, you, you too.
00:23:36So what kind of experiments are you going to be doing?
00:23:38I can't tell you.
00:23:39It's classified.
00:23:40Why is the military running the program instead of a civilian agency like, like Noah?
00:23:45I'm sorry, but that's classified, too.
00:23:47What do you mean it's classified?
00:23:49You forget who you're talking to.
00:23:51That's my research, too.
00:23:52I know it.
00:23:53And you know what?
00:23:53If I ever publish it, Dr. Platt says you will get credited also.
00:23:57Thanks, man.
00:23:59Dr. Platt?
00:24:00Who the hell's that?
00:24:01What's this big meteorologist cat that got me working with?
00:24:04If you're so big, why haven't I heard of him?
00:24:06Jesus, Brian, I don't know.
00:24:08Well, you know what?
00:24:08Maybe I should do a little snooping around.
00:24:10Maybe find a little something out.
00:24:11There's anything better to do?
00:24:13I can't tell you that.
00:24:14It's classified.
00:24:15Mm-hmm, very funny.
00:24:17So, have you seen Zé Andrea yet?
00:24:20No, Brian, I haven't.
00:24:21You know what?
00:24:23It's not that kind of city.
00:24:24It's not likely I'm going to just run into her on the street, man.
00:24:26On a lighter note, let's check in with Andrea McIntyre, our very own beach scene reporter who's covering the annual fun festival in the South Bay.
00:24:33Andrea, how are things working out there today?
00:24:36Things beginning to heat up.
00:24:38Here at Hermosa Beach at the fun festival, the annual bikini contest is taking place.
00:24:42Don't let the fun of the sun fool you.
00:24:44Competition is fierce.
00:24:46Prizes will be awarded for the sexiest, the smallest, and the most outrageous bikini.
00:24:50I'm Andrea McIntyre with the beach scene.
00:24:52Back to you, Richard.
00:24:53Okay, we're out of here.
00:24:55Oh, God.
00:24:55You know, I left Florida because they only let me do stories about the weather, and now this.
00:24:59I'm telling you, I can't get a break.
00:25:01Story of my life.
00:25:02Hollywood.
00:25:13K-L-A-Z.
00:25:16Yeah, TV stadium.
00:25:17Of all the TVs in all the world, why does she have to pop up online?
00:25:47What the hell do you think you're doing?
00:26:17What?
00:26:17Do you realize that your power source could blow a hoe in the atmosphere?
00:26:21I just, I didn't know how to get all the power that we need into such a small area.
00:26:26Well, you better find a way, because this isn't getting my approval.
00:26:29Couldn't you just maybe expand your thinking a little bit, Doctor?
00:26:31I mean, General Roberts.
00:26:32General Roberts is not a scientist.
00:26:34I am.
00:26:34And I'm telling you, I will not tolerate recklessness in this program.
00:26:38At least in mistakes.
00:26:41Mistakes cost lives.
00:26:44Am I clear?
00:26:46Back to the drawing board, huh, boys?
00:26:57Hello?
00:26:58Hey, brother, it's me.
00:26:59Hey, I barely hear you.
00:27:01You in the can or something?
00:27:02No, I'm in the car.
00:27:03Car phone.
00:27:04Oh, man, I knew this was going to happen.
00:27:06You got L.A. on me, brother.
00:27:08Well, not exactly.
00:27:09I don't have an agent yet.
00:27:10Hey, listen, bro.
00:27:11I have had a hell of a time finding anything at all on Dr. Platt.
00:27:15Oh, man, I can't believe you're still even doing that.
00:27:17Yeah, it's what you're doing, man.
00:27:18It's like this guy.
00:27:19It's like he don't exist at all.
00:27:21Have you been watching the X-Files again, Brian?
00:27:22No, I'm serious, man.
00:27:23The only thing I found is when I hacked into the local military computer system.
00:27:27Brian, you're going to get in so much shit for that.
00:27:29Listen, there was a Dr. Daniel Platt, okay, working on the base at Homestead back in the early 90s.
00:27:36Homestead?
00:27:37Now, I'm not sure if it's the same guy, but the Guardgate records show that he came in every day all the way up until August 23rd, 1992.
00:27:48August 23rd.
00:27:49That's Andrew.
00:27:51You got it.
00:27:52I bet you their office has got a scrap demand to move out.
00:27:55Yeah, I'm going to see if I can come up with anything else.
00:27:57Why don't you just quit sneaking around and I'll ask him?
00:28:00Ask him?
00:28:01Yeah, what's wrong with that?
00:28:04Well, nothing, I guess.
00:28:05I guess it just kind of takes all the fun out of it.
00:28:11To make it a fun and safe summer, lifeguards have posted warnings for all swimmers to beware of those ripsides.
00:28:16I'm Andrew McIntyre with the beach scene.
00:28:19Back to you, Richard.
00:28:20Well, thank you, Richard.
00:28:21It sounds great when you spend the weekend.
00:28:23See, I think we can just modify the existing software and be totally compatible with a satellite uplink.
00:28:29Well, I think that'll work.
00:28:31Thanks.
00:28:32Oh, hey, Doc.
00:28:35You, uh, you didn't happen by any chance to be at Homestead when Andrew hit, did you?
00:28:39I got this buddy.
00:28:40He thinks he might remember you.
00:28:42I wasn't too far from there myself, but, uh, what a nightmare, huh?
00:28:46No, I wasn't there.
00:28:48I was overseas at the time.
00:28:50Oh, right.
00:28:51Yeah.
00:28:52Must have done someone else that.
00:28:59I spoke with Washington this morning.
00:29:01They said this area might be ripe for saturation.
00:29:03All right.
00:29:04Let's watch for any systems building up off the coast.
00:29:06We are.
00:29:06How's the kid doing?
00:29:08Good.
00:29:09I think he's about got it ready for testing.
00:29:11In fact, we've got a storm picked out.
00:29:13Very well.
00:29:14One thing, though.
00:29:15Hmm?
00:29:16He talks a lot.
00:29:18Asks a lot of questions.
00:29:20Tom, he's a scientist.
00:29:21He's supposed to ask questions.
00:29:23I'm concerned he might have a problem with discretion.
00:29:26Forget about it, Tom.
00:29:27He's a good kid.
00:29:28I don't know.
00:29:32Maybe I ought to keep him on a short leash.
00:29:34I said forget it, Tom.
00:29:36Just do what you get paid to do.
00:29:39That is what I get paid to do, sir.
00:29:52And the Venice Boardwalk Art Festival will continue through Sunday.
00:29:56I'm Andrea McIntyre, and that's the beach scene.
00:29:58Richard?
00:29:59Well, thank you, Andrea.
00:30:00Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend.
00:30:02When we come back, you'll hear about a very special Southland family reunion.
00:30:07And we're out.
00:30:09All right, people.
00:30:10Hey, Ann.
00:30:10Let's get this set turned around.
00:30:12Ron, I don't believe it.
00:30:14What are you doing here?
00:30:17Well, I was just working, you know, in the neighborhood.
00:30:20I figured I'd...
00:30:21You?
00:30:22Working here?
00:30:24I thought you hated L.A.
00:30:26Well...
00:30:27I mean, they don't have weather there, remember?
00:30:28Made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
00:30:31It's great to see you.
00:30:32You too.
00:30:34How's Brian and Shelley and...
00:30:37I forgot their daughter's name.
00:30:39Nina.
00:30:39Yeah, she's, uh...
00:30:41She's really beautiful.
00:30:43Brian, he's, uh...
00:30:44He's still Brian.
00:30:45Oh, I know.
00:30:48You were great up there.
00:30:49I saw you.
00:30:50Um, you...
00:30:51You did the right thing to come out here.
00:30:53I don't know.
00:30:54Sometimes I'm not so sure.
00:30:56Really?
00:30:56Because you look very confident, very self-assured out there in the field.
00:31:01You've watched me.
00:31:02One time, I did.
00:31:03I was on at the place, and I, uh...
00:31:06Uh-huh.
00:31:06Well, twice, maybe, because, you know, it comes on again at 11.
00:31:10Yeah.
00:31:10Hey, let's get out of here.
00:31:11Let's go get some dinner someplace, huh?
00:31:13Good.
00:31:13I would love to, but...
00:31:15You ready to go, honey?
00:31:16I don't want to miss our reservation.
00:31:17Oh, Richard, this is Ron Young.
00:31:19He's, um...
00:31:20He's an old friend from Florida.
00:31:23Nice to meet you.
00:31:24Yes, Amy.
00:31:25We gotta get going, honey.
00:31:26You know how hard it was to get a table of Spago tonight?
00:31:28Chop, chop, chop.
00:31:30Look, can I take a rain check on that?
00:31:31All right, which one?
00:31:41The black one or the red one?
00:31:43Uh...
00:31:44The red one.
00:31:46Okay, got it.
00:31:46Ow, ow, ow.
00:31:49You said the red one.
00:31:50I meant the other red one.
00:31:53Mmm.
00:31:53You know what?
00:31:54Remind me never to go into a hurricane with you, okay?
00:31:56Because you're dangerous.
00:31:57Hey.
00:31:58Never fly into a hurricane with me,
00:32:00because I'm dangerous.
00:32:01Right.
00:32:06Young, I understand that you, uh,
00:32:09had a visit with a reporter yesterday,
00:32:11Andrea McIntyre, K-L-A-Z.
00:32:13Yes, I hope you haven't forgotten about our confidentiality agreement.
00:32:19No, I haven't.
00:32:20And you know what?
00:32:21It's not like that.
00:32:22We know each other.
00:32:23We used to date back home.
00:32:25Wow.
00:32:26Reporters can be a damn curious bunch.
00:32:29Especially the ones you dated.
00:32:33You're doing good work.
00:32:34Your friend, Holt.
00:32:40He seems to want to know everything.
00:32:42Why do you suppose that is?
00:32:43Don't ask me.
00:32:44I just fly the planes.
00:32:45Well, I hope you didn't eat too much for breakfast this morning,
00:33:00because you're going to be flying into a pretty nasty storm over the Pacific.
00:33:03In fact, the National Weather Service has just categorized it as a powerful tropical storm
00:33:08with hurricane potential.
00:33:10I don't need to remind any of you that 85% of the world's natural disasters are storm-related.
00:33:16But now, thanks to you, we are finally on the verge of being able to control them.
00:33:21Yes, this is a momentous day for all of us.
00:33:24And we're counting on you to make this the most successful test flight to date.
00:33:29So let's get up there and kick that storm's ass.
00:33:33Good luck, sir.
00:33:38Thank you, sir.
00:34:02Good luck, sir.
00:34:03Good luck, sir.
00:34:08Thank you, sir.
00:35:15Heads up, guys.
00:35:28We're five miles from the front.
00:35:30Okay, let's activate launch sequence.
00:35:45Okay, we are online and ready to go.
00:35:58You just go ahead, John, and let us know when you have control.
00:36:00Dr. Platt, we are locked in.
00:36:15Excellent.
00:36:17Now, let's turn that front to southwest to a heading of 220 and pull it back to the 34th parallel.
00:36:22Okay.
00:36:25Two degrees.
00:36:28I got four degrees.
00:36:32Nine degrees.
00:36:34Moving south by southwest.
00:36:43Keep it steady, young.
00:36:50Jorgensen, commence phase two.
00:36:53Yes, sir.
00:36:54Twenty-one degrees.
00:37:04Twenty-nine degrees.
00:37:07Parametric pressure at 986 millibars.
00:37:09Are you serious?
00:37:10It was 991 at the last fix.
00:37:13That's right.
00:37:14That's impossible.
00:37:16A five millibar drop in five minutes?
00:37:18Dude, what did you think we were doing up here, flying kites?
00:37:21Wind speed is 65 knots.
00:37:22We got ourselves a hurricane.
00:37:25Jesus.
00:37:27Has this thermobarometer been recalibrated?
00:37:30Yeah, I did it this morning.
00:37:32Because there is no way that he could.
00:37:36Yeah, what's going on up there?
00:37:38Looks like the storm is going to be due to where.
00:37:40Doctor, I'm sorry.
00:37:41I seem to be losing control of the storm.
00:37:45Look, it's getting too big, too fast.
00:37:47I never calculated for this in the original design.
00:37:49Just try to regain control.
00:37:51Can you override it and pick it up from down here?
00:37:53I can't get a feed into it right now.
00:37:54I need a few minutes.
00:37:57Damn it.
00:38:01I'm sorry, Doctor.
00:38:03I've lost control of the storm.
00:38:07Don't worry, Daniel.
00:38:08We moved it once, and we'll move it again.
00:38:12Jorgensen?
00:38:13I'm back down.
00:38:14Yes, sir.
00:38:17Barometric pressure is back up to 990.
00:38:19Hunter 2.
00:38:26General Roberts here.
00:38:27Good show, people.
00:38:28That was an outstanding test.
00:38:30Major Goodman, bring it home.
00:38:32Roger that, sir.
00:38:33We'll be home in time for dinner.
00:38:34Well done.
00:38:47Well done.
00:39:04Well, I think that we need to calculate some...
00:39:06Dr. Platt, I don't understand this project.
00:39:09Now, look, this ion generator you built, it's way too powerful, and you know it.
00:39:13Why would you knowingly generate a hurricane?
00:39:15Why not?
00:39:16If we don't do it, somebody else will.
00:39:18I mean, the technology is just sitting out there waiting to be developed.
00:39:21We have to find out what this thing is capable of before some power-hungry dictator or cold-blooded terrorist beats us to the punch.
00:39:27Don't you think you're infringing on God's territory?
00:39:30You don't think God is on our side?
00:39:33Come on, son.
00:39:34Hey, Tanya, I...
00:39:44Oh, um, can I ask you a question?
00:39:48Free country.
00:39:49Talk all you want.
00:39:50Okay, what...
00:39:51How many missions have you flown?
00:39:56What, am I embarrassing you, young?
00:39:58No, I just...
00:39:59I just want to know how many, you know, where you guys have tested this thing.
00:40:02What is this, 20 questions?
00:40:04Okay.
00:40:07You want to have dinner with me?
00:40:09Why, so you can quiz me some more?
00:40:11No, just... just dinner.
00:40:13Okay, maybe a little small talk in between the courses, but definitely not a quiz.
00:40:17See, I'm not big on small talk.
00:40:19I like to cut right to the chase.
00:40:22Oh, really?
00:40:25Maybe some other time.
00:40:33Brian, what do you got?
00:40:34Those assholes that know what shit if they found out I hacked into their system.
00:40:37Come on.
00:40:38Okay, okay, take it easy.
00:40:39You're right.
00:40:40I found the exact same heat signature in Andrew.
00:40:43Hurricane Catherine in Haiti.
00:40:44Hurricane George in Amsterdam Island.
00:40:46Amsterdam Island?
00:40:47I don't remember that.
00:40:48Yeah, it was a little island that was in the news because they wouldn't let our jets land there when we were bombing the Persian Gulf.
00:40:53What?
00:40:54Yeah, man.
00:40:55The whole island was flattened after the storm, and then we went in, we gave them all this aid, totally rebuilt the airstrip.
00:40:59The place is like a B-52 parking lot now.
00:41:01Hey, you want me to give you some stance on it?
00:41:04No.
00:41:04Just keep going.
00:41:05Get every piece of data that you can.
00:41:07You're going to tell me what this is about, bro?
00:41:09Hey, I'll tell you.
00:41:10I don't have to kill you, remember?
00:41:11Can't you just tell me part of it and rough me up a little?
00:41:13I'll call you later when I can.
00:41:35Hey.
00:41:36That's his identification.
00:41:39All right, thank you.
00:41:43Evening good.
00:41:46Excuse me.
00:41:47Dr. Young.
00:41:49I'm sorry, but your clearance only allows day access.
00:41:51I, uh, I just left something in my computer.
00:41:54I'm sorry, you'll have to get it tomorrow.
00:41:56It's a, uh, it's a phone number, man.
00:41:59I gotta call this chick tonight or I'm really gonna be screwed.
00:42:05Look, it'll only take me five minutes.
00:42:06You can go with me if you want.
00:42:08I can't leave my post.
00:42:09Not even to go to the bathroom?
00:42:10I know they let you go to the bathroom.
00:42:13Oh, man, I am begging you.
00:42:15I mean, if you saw this girl, you would know.
00:42:19You got five minutes.
00:42:21You're a lifesaver.
00:42:22You're a lifesaver.
00:42:44Let's go.
00:43:14Let's go.
00:43:44Let's go.
00:44:14Let's go.
00:44:44Let's go.
00:45:14Let's go.
00:45:16Let's go.
00:45:18Let's go.
00:45:20Let's go.
00:45:22Let's go.
00:45:26Let's go.
00:45:28Let's go.
00:45:30Let's go.
00:45:40Let's go.
00:45:42Let's go.
00:45:43Hey, man.
00:45:44Let's go in the bathroom.
00:45:46Sorry, Dr. Young.
00:45:48That do anything for the low end?
00:45:54Yeah, that actually brings up about 20%.
00:45:58Listen, Dr. Platt, I know what's going on here.
00:46:04I do.
00:46:06And I know what you guys intend to do with this thing.
00:46:08You do?
00:46:09You do.
00:46:10I also know you leveled Amsterdam Island and that Northern Mexico is next.
00:46:12What I don't know, doctor, is how you can stand idly by while thousands of lives are destroyed with your device.
00:46:18I don't know what you're talking about.
00:46:20I don't know what you're talking about, young.
00:46:22I mean, you are right about Mexico.
00:46:24Diablo Valley.
00:46:25That is the driest spot in North America.
00:46:27They've had years of drought.
00:46:29I mean, sure, we're trying to send a storm in there to save people, not to hurt them.
00:46:34I suggest you get back to work and quit dreaming up conspiracy theories.
00:46:38I mean, we're on a very, very tight deadline.
00:46:41I don't want to hear any more of this.
00:46:44Everything okay here, Dr. Platt?
00:46:48Everything is fine.
00:46:50Young, let's try that again.
00:46:59Oh, my mother.
00:47:17Oh, come on.
00:47:18Young.
00:47:19Young.
00:47:24Come on.
00:47:25Come on.
00:47:26Shh.
00:47:27You know I can't believe this.
00:47:35So, that offer for dinner is still good?
00:47:50Oh, come on.
00:47:52You don't quit, do you?
00:47:53I'll quit when I'm dead.
00:47:57It'll be about five minutes.
00:48:01When are you scheduled to fly to Mexico again?
00:48:04I'm not going to Mexico.
00:48:09You must have tequila on the brain.
00:48:12I wonder why.
00:48:14When are you supposed to fly anywhere again?
00:48:16One, two, three.
00:48:17Oh.
00:48:18Oh, God.
00:48:19Oh.
00:48:20Okay.
00:48:21You know you can tell me.
00:48:22You can.
00:48:23You know what?
00:48:24I don't want to talk about work anymore.
00:48:25Oh, boy.
00:48:26Oh, boy.
00:48:27In fact, I don't want to talk at all.
00:48:30Okay.
00:48:31Okay.
00:48:32Come here.
00:48:33Okay.
00:48:34I don't want to talk about work anymore.
00:48:36Oh, boy.
00:48:37Oh, boy.
00:48:38In fact, I don't want to talk at all.
00:48:42No.
00:48:43Okay.
00:48:44Okay.
00:48:45Okay.
00:48:46Come here.
00:48:47Ugh.
00:48:53Good night, buddy.
00:48:55Good night, buddy.
00:49:25Hello?
00:49:27Hello?
00:49:31Hello?
00:49:32Ron?
00:49:33Oh, Shelly.
00:49:34Ron, where have you been?
00:49:35I've been trying to reach you.
00:49:37Oh.
00:49:38Oh.
00:49:39Oh.
00:49:40Oh.
00:49:41Oh.
00:49:42Oh.
00:49:43Oh.
00:49:44Oh.
00:49:45Oh.
00:49:46Oh.
00:49:47Oh.
00:49:48Oh.
00:49:49Oh.
00:49:50Oh.
00:49:51Oh.
00:49:52Oh.
00:49:53Oh.
00:49:54Oh.
00:49:55What?
00:49:56Brian was in a car accident last night.
00:49:59Honey, he's dead.
00:50:01What?
00:50:02I didn't even get the chance to say good night.
00:50:05Oh, my God, Shelly.
00:50:07Oh.
00:50:08Um.
00:50:09Yeah?
00:50:10What?
00:50:11Mr. Young?
00:50:12Ron Young?
00:50:13Yeah?
00:50:14Why?
00:50:15I'm Detective Nielsen.
00:50:16I just got a couple of questions for you.
00:50:18Shelly, um, yeah, listen, baby.
00:50:20I'm gonna have a question for you.
00:50:23Michelle, um, yeah, listen, baby.
00:50:24I'm gonna have to call you back.
00:50:30Where were you last night?
00:50:32I was right here.
00:50:35A woman and child were killed in a hit-and-run accident last night.
00:50:45Witnesses have ID'd your vehicle.
00:50:50It's, uh, it's not possible.
00:50:53Will you mind coming on down to the station answering a few more questions?
00:50:57I, uh...
00:50:58I, uh...
00:50:59I'll get sick.
00:51:01Oh.
00:51:02Oh.
00:51:03Oh.
00:51:04Oh.
00:51:05Oh.
00:51:06Oh.
00:51:07Oh.
00:51:08Oh.
00:51:10Oh, I...
00:51:12Ah!
00:51:13Ah!
00:51:14Ah!
00:51:15Ah!
00:51:16Ah!
00:51:17Ah!
00:51:18Ah!
00:51:19Ah!
00:51:20Ah!
00:51:21What's going on out there?
00:51:51Um, look, you've got to meet me at the corner of Venice and Third. I can't explain it to you right now, but you've got to do this for me, okay?
00:52:05God, you're a mess. Are you okay?
00:52:07Listen, I need to know what is going on right now down in Mexico, politically.
00:52:11Mexico?
00:52:12Yes.
00:52:13That's what this is about.
00:52:14Come on, yes.
00:52:16I don't know. I think they're talking about nationalizing their oil industry again.
00:52:20So what does that do to normal people?
00:52:24Well, the big American oil companies will lose their shirts, for one thing, and it won't help the President's approval rating since he sponsored NAFTA.
00:52:30What does this have to do with you?
00:52:32Well, I've got a big story for you, but you may not want it.
00:52:35Why?
00:52:36Because it's about the weather.
00:52:38Look, there's a storm right now. It's brewing off the coast of Mexico. Keep your eye on it.
00:52:43A storm. That's it.
00:52:45Oh, a really big storm. Does that make a difference? Listen, hurricanes don't usually hit landfall on the west coast because the water, it's just, it's too cold.
00:52:52But this one, trust me, it's going to be different. Do you understand?
00:52:56I think so.
00:52:57All right. Um, look, do a nexus search on my boss. Don't tell anything to anybody. It's going to be getting dangerous.
00:53:06What about you?
00:53:08Don't worry about me.
00:53:09Would you be careful?
00:53:18Just don't do anything stupid.
00:53:20No.
00:53:36What the fuck did you put in my drink last night?
00:53:48We're talking.
00:53:49Talking about you drug me so they could set me up.
00:53:51Drugged you, please. You know, you passed out, so I left.
00:53:53When are you going to Mexico, Tanya?
00:53:55I told you, I'm not going to Mexico, all right?
00:53:57Plane left three hours ago. Platt went up in your place.
00:54:00Security to the locker room now.
00:54:16Get out of here, Goodman.
00:54:20Now, get out of here!
00:54:26Hey, Commander.
00:54:27Hey, Andrea.
00:54:28Look, you wouldn't by any chance be tracking a storm off the west coast of Mexico, would you?
00:54:32Mmm, Tropical Storm Elizabeth?
00:54:34Nah. It's nothing out of the ordinary. It's just a low-grade...
00:54:38Hey.
00:54:40That's impossible.
00:54:41It was just a...
00:54:42Look, keep me posted, okay?
00:54:45Yeah, okay.
00:54:49Wind speed is now reaching 125 knots.
00:54:51We've upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane.
00:54:54Should we continue to increase power?
00:54:56That's affirmative.
00:54:58Continue to full power and hold.
00:55:00I need to talk to you, General.
00:55:02And I need to talk to you, Tom.
00:55:04What the hell is going on?
00:55:06What are you talking about?
00:55:07I was told you had one of your mercenaries run somebody off the street last night in Miami.
00:55:10Is that true?
00:55:11I thought you wanted...
00:55:12I don't care what you thought. Just listen to me.
00:55:13This is not one of your rag-ass, renegade CIA missions, you understand?
00:55:16There was a breach...
00:55:17I told you I didn't want that kind of crap in my program.
00:55:19There was a breach of security, sir, so I took care of it.
00:55:21I'm sure that you did.
00:55:22When you buy a pit bull for protection, don't be surprised if he ends up biting somebody in the ass.
00:55:25Oh, cut the bullshit analogy, will you?
00:55:27I will not have you compromising my mission.
00:55:29Excuse me, sir. We're having a problem.
00:55:31What is it?
00:55:32The storm seems to be shifting.
00:55:33Oh, for Christ's sake.
00:55:34I'm not finished with you.
00:55:35How do you compromise?
00:55:37What the hell's wrong? We lost control?
00:55:39Sir, I'm checking.
00:55:40Hunter 2, General Roberts here. Do you copy?
00:55:44Dr. Platt, do you copy? General Roberts here.
00:55:49Hunter 2, Dr. Platt, please come in. What the hell's going on up there, people?
00:55:54Dr. Platt? The General's talking to you, sir.
00:56:01Sir, I'm having trouble connecting to the onboard controls.
00:56:03For Christ's sake.
00:56:06See, this is precisely why I need Young here.
00:56:08He's in my office.
00:56:09What?
00:56:10That's what I was trying to tell you. He snuck on the base somehow. He's in my office.
00:56:14Why don't you stand there? Get his ass up here on the double!
00:56:21Hunter 2, General Roberts here. Do you copy?
00:56:24Dr. Platt, what the hell is going on up there?
00:56:27Daniel, please respond. This is General Roberts.
00:56:32This is General Roberts. Do you copy?
00:56:46Dr. Platt's doing something onboard the Hurricane Hunter.
00:56:49Sir?
00:56:50Sir, he's changed the coordinates of the storm and locked us out so we can't override.
00:56:53He's turning the storm away from Mexico.
00:56:55Can he do that from up there?
00:56:57Yes, he can.
00:57:00What can we do to stop him?
00:57:03Nothing. That program's designed to run itself. It just...
00:57:06Jorgensen, General Roberts here. Do you copy?
00:57:15Copy.
00:57:16Jorgensen, I hereby issue special order Zulu-29 effective immediately. I say again.
00:57:23I hereby issue special order Zulu-29 effective immediately. Do you copy?
00:57:31Yes, sir.
00:57:32Very well.
00:57:38Excuse me, Dr. Platt?
00:57:40I can't do it.
00:57:41No, no, no.
00:57:42I can't do it.
00:57:43I can't do it.
00:57:44I can't do it.
00:57:45Take five bangs.
00:57:46Control, this is Hunter 2. Control, this is Hunter 2. I have gunfire onboard. I repeat, I have gunfire onboard.
00:58:12I think we've sustained damage. I have got hydraulic system boarded. Control, do you copy?
00:58:18Whatever happens, Captain, stay on course. Do you copy?
00:58:21Yes, sir.
00:58:22Very well.
00:58:42No!
00:58:45Ugh!
00:58:46Ugh!
00:58:48Ugh!
00:58:49Ugh!
00:58:50Ugh!
00:58:51Ugh!
00:58:57This is Jorgensen. Dr. Platt has been relieved of duty. I'll have everything back on line in just a moment.
00:59:03Copy, Jorgensen.
00:59:05You satisfied now, General?
00:59:11Platt's dead. I'm wanted for a double homicide,
00:59:13and your creation's on the way to destroying most of northern Mexico.
00:59:16Why don't you shut the hell up?
00:59:17That's enough, Tom.
00:59:21You're wrong, son. It wasn't the plan.
00:59:24I know you find it hard to believe, but I do have honorable intentions.
00:59:28Yeah, I'll bet.
00:59:31Listen to me.
00:59:32Do you know what this is really all about?
00:59:35Son, we are actually on the verge now
00:59:38of creating the first user-friendly weapon of mass destruction
00:59:41the world has ever known with no nuclear fallout.
00:59:44Now, think what that means.
00:59:45No more putting our boys' lives on the line.
00:59:48No more laying waste places like Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
00:59:51Now we can send over a full-blown hurricane to do the job
00:59:54with no fear of reprisals.
00:59:56The weather is God's territory, remember?
00:59:58Now, you don't have to agree with me,
01:00:00but you do have to look at the whole picture to understand.
01:00:02The United States is now the only superpower in the world,
01:00:05and that requires maintaining a global view,
01:00:07taking into account a broad spectrum of American interest.
01:00:10What do you know about that?
01:00:12I don't see how killing Americans
01:00:14could possibly be in America's best interest.
01:00:17Hurricane Andrew, 44 Americans dead.
01:00:19You know, I lost that many boys in one weekend in Vietnam.
01:00:28You think anyone ever gave a damn about them?
01:00:31So 44 civilians lost their lives in the name of science.
01:00:33That's too bad.
01:00:34But it's not the first time, and believe me,
01:00:36it will not be the last.
01:00:38Every operation runs the risk of collateral damage.
01:00:40If you are uncomfortable running risks, doctor,
01:00:44while performing scientific experiments,
01:00:46I suggest you find another field.
01:00:50Let me put it this way.
01:00:52If 200 people you'll never know,
01:00:54living on the other side of the world,
01:00:55in a town you've never heard of,
01:00:56die in a hurricane,
01:00:58but as a result,
01:00:59you get to spend $3 less
01:01:01the next time you fill up your gas tank,
01:01:02are you really going to care?
01:01:03Yeah.
01:01:04Yes, I am.
01:01:05Well, I got news for you, doc.
01:01:06I'm willing to bet that most Americans will not.
01:01:10You see, as long as Americans have their life, liberty,
01:01:12and their God-given right to buy cheap gasoline,
01:01:14they are happy.
01:01:15And I am the guy that's going to make that possible.
01:01:35Sir, we've lost the plane.
01:01:47Are you serious?
01:01:47It just disappeared.
01:01:50General Roberts.
01:01:51What?
01:01:52The generator's locked on a new course.
01:01:55What the hell are you talking about?
01:01:56The hurricane, sir.
01:01:57It's headed due north,
01:01:58straight for Los Angeles.
01:02:01Oh, my God.
01:02:05Come on, people.
01:02:09Let's get that generator back on course.
01:02:11You won't be able to redirect it from down here.
01:02:14You know, I have had enough of you, young.
01:02:16Shut up, Tom.
01:02:18You got any ideas?
01:02:20Yeah, a couple.
01:02:22Can I trust you?
01:02:23General, you're going to have to trust me.
01:02:25Unless you want to go down in history
01:02:26as the man who wiped Los Angeles off the map.
01:02:30What do you need?
01:02:31I need these handcuffs off me,
01:02:32my software back,
01:02:33and a plane to get me up there.
01:02:35All right, uncuff him.
01:02:39General, don't tell me that you...
01:02:40I said uncuff him.
01:02:41Give him everything he needs.
01:02:43Lieutenant, over here.
01:02:46Get a hold of Major Goodman.
01:02:48And prep Hunter 3 ASAP.
01:02:50Tell the Major she'll be taking Dr. Young up there
01:02:52to see if we can regain control of that damn thing.
01:02:55On the double.
01:02:57General, I do not feel like it's a good idea
01:02:59to be sending Young up there.
01:03:01I agree.
01:03:01That's why you're going with him.
01:03:05Dr. Young,
01:03:07pray do not give me any further grief.
01:03:12But...
01:03:12Come on, Nate.
01:03:14Just give me a minute.
01:03:15I'm a busy man, honey.
01:03:16I'm hungry, and I'm late for my haircut.
01:03:18Look, I'm trying to tell you this could be big.
01:03:20There is a hurricane headed for western Mexico.
01:03:22Yeah, well, there's an Ebola outbreak in Zaire,
01:03:24a military coup in Ecuador,
01:03:25and a bunion on my right foot.
01:03:27Who gives a rat to that?
01:03:28Andrea.
01:03:29Danny.
01:03:30I've been looking all over for you.
01:03:31That hurricane just made a dramatic shift north.
01:03:33What?
01:03:34You mean towards L.A.?
01:03:36Oh, my God.
01:03:37Oh, no, no, no, no.
01:03:37Don't worry.
01:03:38Those things never get that far north.
01:03:41They dissipate as soon as they hit the Humboldt Current.
01:03:42Most we'll get is a little rain.
01:03:44Nice try, honey.
01:03:45No, wait.
01:03:46This one is not going to dissipate.
01:03:48And if it gets up here,
01:03:50we're going to see a lot more than a little rain.
01:03:53Well, how do you know?
01:03:54Yeah.
01:03:55Look, I have my sources, but I know.
01:03:57Look, when you get some real news, let me know.
01:03:59But in the meantime, stick to the fluff.
01:04:01You're good at it.
01:04:06I saw this storm made it.
01:04:08This thing wasn't designed to handle those kind of winds.
01:04:10It's pretty tough to me.
01:04:11Oh, you think so, huh?
01:04:12I think it's all we got.
01:04:14Then I hope you prepare to will.
01:04:16I don't know anything we're fighting over.
01:04:19Air Force Colonels' innovative cloud-seating experiments
01:04:22cause heavy rain in the Haiphong region of North Vietnam,
01:04:26forcing the Viet Cong from their tunnels.
01:04:30Washington?
01:04:31I'd like the number for the Air Force Public Relations Office, please.
01:04:35This is Richard Collins with a KLAZ exclusive report.
01:04:41Southern California, long plagued with natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, and mudslides,
01:04:46faces another force of nature as Hurricane Elizabeth bears down on the City of Angels.
01:04:50This isn't happening.
01:04:50According to KLAZ's staff meteorologist, Commander Danny Rogers,
01:04:53the storm formed off Mexico's southwestern coast,
01:04:56then strengthened rapidly as it moved northwest.
01:04:59Just moments ago, it reached Category 5 on the Sifford-Sampson scale.
01:05:03Commander, I understand that Hurricane Elizabeth could make landfall
01:05:06in as little as six hours from now.
01:05:10Yes, yes, Richard, that's true.
01:05:12The storm system has just crossed the cold waters of the humble current
01:05:18which runs along our coastline.
01:05:22Miraculously, it failed to slow it down.
01:05:24I've never seen anything like it.
01:05:27Thank you, Commander.
01:05:28I'm just getting word from the county emergency management team
01:05:31that those of you in the beach community
01:05:33should proceed with immediate evacuation procedures.
01:05:36We're going to pause for a brief station identification
01:05:38and be back on the air with our round-the-clock coverage of Hurricane Elizabeth.
01:05:42Okay, everybody, I need every reporter,
01:05:45every cameraman out in the field pronto.
01:05:47If this city's going to blow away, I want you to see it live.
01:05:50Bill, Tim, down to City Hall.
01:05:52Andrea!
01:05:53I'll take care of the fluff. I'm good at that.
01:05:55Never mind. I want you to go to the Hollywood sign.
01:05:57Wait. I want the Hollywood sign.
01:05:59What do you mean? You've got to stay at the anchor there.
01:06:01No way! I'm going out in the field.
01:06:03If Dan Rather can hack it, so can I.
01:06:05Fine. Okay, then I want you to go to Sunset Boulevard
01:06:07and get some shots.
01:06:07Look, Nate, I've got inside information on this story.
01:06:10Why don't you let me stay and cover the anchor desk?
01:06:12Sorry, baby, you don't have a chops for it.
01:06:13Oh, yes, I do.
01:06:15Look, Richard, tell him I can do it.
01:06:16Nate, I need you to send someone over to Eddie Bauer
01:06:18to get me some of that macho-looking weather.
01:06:20Come on.
01:06:21Richard!
01:06:21First time up in one of these, tough guys?
01:06:39We're 15 miles from the eyewall.
01:06:42Things are going to start getting a little rough.
01:06:49Do you have the fish or the lasagna?
01:06:52Malibu Pier has been closed and evacuation procedures...
01:06:55Supermarket shelves have been stripped bare as residents prepare to either flee or ride out
01:07:02this most unusual storm.
01:07:04In Palos Verdes, these homeowners are taking every precaution necessary to avoid damage from
01:07:08wind...
01:07:08Yes, I'm still here.
01:07:11Uh-huh.
01:07:12Retired?
01:07:13Are you sure we're talking about the same General James Roberts?
01:07:17Okay.
01:07:18Thank you for your help.
01:07:19That is so weird.
01:07:22Hang on!
01:07:23We're about to penetrate the eyewall!
01:07:25They're in the eye.
01:07:49We got anything yet?
01:07:51I can't acquire it optically.
01:07:52All of these codes are failing me.
01:07:55Shh.
01:07:56Oh, shit.
01:07:57Just keep trying.
01:07:59This is Andrea McIntyre.
01:08:01Reporting live from West Los Angeles.
01:08:03In a last-minute attempt to evacuate the coastal communities, both sides of the Santa
01:08:08Monica Freeway have been opened eastbound to accommodate this mass exodus.
01:08:13Fear and panic have definitely set in as residents try desperately to move inland and the reality
01:08:18of Hurricane Elizabeth becomes all too clear.
01:08:21Come on.
01:08:22God damn it.
01:08:24Come.
01:08:27Platt locked us out.
01:08:29When he reprogrammed it, he must have locked us out.
01:08:32The only way to recalibrate it is manually.
01:08:35How am I going to get that thing back on this plane?
01:08:37Look, I just need some information on General James Roberts.
01:08:54No, no, I already tried over to the base, and the brass claimed that he's not on staff there.
01:08:59Look, I think he's running some sort of top-secret black ops program.
01:09:03Just see what you can dig up, okay?
01:09:06You're going to have to catch it with the wing, as close to the propeller as possible without
01:09:14cutting the line.
01:09:15Oh, that's brilliant.
01:09:16If I hit it too far from the propeller, it's going to rip that wing right off.
01:09:20You got any better ideas?
01:09:21I'd like to hear them.
01:09:22Let's hear them.
01:09:23Seven gale force winds have begun to pound Newport Beach with weight in sand.
01:09:27Here on Pacific Coast Highway, power lines are down and traffic is blocked.
01:09:30They're taking their toll here in Malibu.
01:09:32Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors as winds of up to 90 miles per hour have been
01:09:37reported along the coastline.
01:09:38The coastline is being reported everywhere with the eye of the storm still 25 miles off
01:09:42our coast.
01:09:43This once great landmark you see behind me is quickly falling to its knees.
01:09:47It's winds of up to 80 miles an hour, cuts around it.
01:09:50I don't know how much more it can take before we'll...
01:09:53I think we better move to a new location, back to in the studio for now.
01:09:57Am I off?
01:09:59Yeah!
01:10:00Well, let's get the hell out of here!
01:10:08Here goes nothing.

01:10:24We're going too far to the left.
01:10:25No, here or the right.
01:10:26Guys, could you shut the hell up and let me fly this thing?
01:10:28Oh, a stalwart of shit.

01:10:30This thing is a damn sleigh.
01:10:31We're going too far to the left.
01:10:32No, here or the right?
01:10:33Guys, could you shut the hell up and let me fly this thing?
01:10:36Oh, yeah!
01:10:37Oh, yeah!
01:10:38Yeah!
01:10:39We got it!
01:10:40Oh, I never doubted you.
01:10:41Look, this thing's adding a shitload of drags.
01:10:42What do you say you girls get back there and get to work?
01:10:43Right, let's go.
01:10:44Well, wait a minute.
01:10:45Now that we hooked it, why can't we just fly where we want the storm to go?
01:10:46No, because the storm will never keep up.
01:10:47We'd have to be doing less than 50 to have a prayer.
01:10:48Come on!
01:10:49General, sir, we captured the generator.
