00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to
00:20original music artists from around the county. Each artist will be here with me in the studio
00:25talking about and performing their music. Today I'm joined by Wolf Sunday, a singer-songwriter
00:30who has created an energetic acoustic act with a punk mentality and witty humor all the way from
00:37Dover. Thanks for being here, Wolf. Hi, thank you. Thank you for having me. Yeah, how are you doing?
00:41So some of our eagle-eyed viewers will probably recognize your face but maybe not your act
00:46because this is a solo project. Talk to me a little bit about that. Why have you branched out on your
00:52own? So I've been doing this for a while. I started like as a solo act in about 2013 so I've
01:00been doing this for quite a while now. I'm old and it was kind of actually it was while I was on a bit
01:07of a break from this that I decided to kind of branch out into doing band stuff and that's when
01:12I joined We Found The Wreck. Shout out We Found The Wreck. And yeah and then I was playing with them
01:18and having a great time with them and I've just decided to just start doing some solo stuff again.
01:22I had some songs in my head that didn't quite fit the band. I thought, you know what, maybe it's time
01:25to start doing some solo stuff again. So here I am. Okay, so as a solo act, you've described yourself
01:31energetic acoustic punk mentality, witty humor. Tell me how all of that comes together into music.
01:39Sure, right. Yeah, I mean I just, I am a big fan of punk music and there's a whole kind of movement
01:48of punk artists that kind of do acoustic stuff. People like Frank Turner, Chuck Reagan who's one
01:55of my biggest influences. Yeah and I just love kind of the blending of like folky kind of more
02:03country rootsy kind of music with a kind of punk mindset and maybe punk kind of like politics and
02:10all kind of left-leaning kind of stuff and that's kind of what I'm all about personally and it's nice
02:15to kind of incorporate that with the music. Yeah and it's also a good excuse to not really be able
02:21to sing very well. So I can just say it's meant to sound like that. It's punk. It's the fake it till
02:26you make it. Creativeness that is art. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. Nice. Okay. So tell me a little
02:33bit about the music style of Wolf Sunday. So it's punk mentality but what does that encompass in a song?
02:42Yeah, so like I say like I love I love telling kind of stories about things that I that I kind of
02:53come across. So a lot of my songs are about like stuff that's happened to me while I've been on the
02:58road on tour and stuff. I'm really lucky because I've got to I've got to travel around quite a lot
03:03between like 2017 and 2019 just before lockdown happened with everything that happened there
03:09I was gigging like I was on the road all the time. I was playing shows all around the place with with
03:15some amazing friends and a lot of my songs kind of come from like things that happened. I've got a
03:21song called I spend more time at service stations than on stage and it's true. You spend a lot of time
03:27service stations when you're when you're touring. Yeah, so and I think I think the kind of punk
03:32mentality really comes into just being able to like tell stories in songs that are kind of like
03:38really talk about kind of personal like things that have happened to you and yeah. So yeah.
03:46Amazing. Now that song you mentioned is not your first song today. I don't think we're hearing that
03:50one today but your first song today tell us a little bit about that. That is Are You Ready? So today I
03:56thought I'm actually now that I'm kind of back making solo music um I thought I've been writing
04:01some new songs I thought I'd try them all out today. So only one of the songs that I'm playing
04:04today which I'm playing later is is out recorded yet. This one is completely new. I've never actually
04:09played this one before um so this is Are You Ready? Amazing. I can't wait to hear it. Take it away.
04:13my aching bones but I can't sleep no more till I get out the door and climb tonight
04:33but there are better things to do than sitting around and die and take that moment before sunset
04:40taking all my eyes can get and then I keep on moving through the night
04:47this is all there is there's nothing left when the moment comes for your final breath now
04:59are you ready to face the end no good running no time that you can extend are you ready
05:13to face the void no good running you're burning like an asteroid
05:21my bloody nose where I lost the fight but I came back as an underdog tonight oh better off when the gloves are on
05:41and the gloves are on and fade part dirty all along did that moment before sunset
05:46taking all my eyes can get now and then I'm moving through the night
05:52and I'm coming through the night
05:56this is all there is there's nothing left when the moment comes for your final breath now
06:03and the moment comes for your final breath now are you ready to face the end no good running no time that you can extend are you ready to face the end no good running
06:13No good running, no time that you can extend
06:18Are you ready to face the void?
06:24No good running, you're burning like an asteroid
06:28I went to the end of my own world
06:35To see my void unfold
06:39I went to my personal paradox
06:45To see what I had lost
06:50Are you ready to face the end?
06:56No good running, no time that you can extend
07:00Are you ready to face the void?
07:07No good running, no time that you can extend
07:13That was amazing.
07:28Tell me a little bit more about the story behind that song
07:31because there are some really strong lines in that.
07:33Thank you, yeah that song, in fact all the songs that I'm going to play for you today
07:39They're all newer songs and they're all kind of songs that I've written since coming back to doing solo work
07:47And it's all kind of about all these songs that I write are all kind of about when 2020 happened and everything that happened
07:55I know no one really wants to talk about that but it really affected me as it affected a lot of musicians
08:01And just not being able to gig, especially when I was gigging quite a lot before
08:06Suddenly not being able to do what I love
08:08It really kind of took a toll on my mental health
08:10And I ended up taking a break away from doing music solo for a little while after that
08:16Because it just took a big toll
08:18And I think writing these songs and kind of getting untangling stuff in my head with them
08:24really really helped to find who I am again and helped me get back to being myself
08:30And that's what that song's about, it's about Are You Ready?
08:32It's about getting back to who you need to be and realising that you can't just be sat around being miserable all day
08:38You've got to kind of go and do what you need to do and make yourself happy and be who you need to be in life
08:48No, absolutely, yeah
08:50No, I think that's amazing that that process is doing so much for you
08:53And I think so many artists, like you said, can probably relate exactly the same
08:57Yeah
08:58But we're running a little short on time, so your next song for us today, tell us a little bit about that before we get into it
09:03Yeah, yeah, so this one's Hole In My Head
09:05And again, it's about a very similar thing
09:08It's about that kind of feeling of just being stuck at your office at work
09:12And kind of feeling the numbers getting checked away
09:15Yeah, I'll play it for you
09:17Okay, amazing, can't wait to hear it
09:35Played it on the wall and checked away
09:39Utility rings
09:40It's never enough
09:42I'm out of luck
09:44And I'm standing here
09:46Till I'm back again
09:48In the hole in my head
09:54In the hole in my head
09:59Summer draws near, the days get longer
10:19But we shorten the year as every day ends
10:22It's never enough, and time is afloat
10:26But I'm standing here, till I'm back again
10:29In the hole in my head
10:34In the hole in my head
10:41When I feel burnout, who's left to clear the ashes
10:50When our thighs burn out, who's got the matches
10:56Before I'm back again
10:57In the hole in my head
11:02In the hole in my head
11:09In the hole in my head
11:16In the hole in my head
11:24Hello and welcome back to Based in Kent
11:35Where I am still joined by Wolf Sunday
11:36The witty, energetic, punk, acoustic phenomenon artist
11:41Thank you
11:42I'd try and be at least one or two of those things
11:44I'm sure you're ticking all of the boxes
11:47Don't you worry about that
11:48But we're going to go now into my favourite portion of the show
11:51It's going to be our quick fire question round
11:53You might remember this from the last time you were here
11:55Some of these questions might be the same
11:56Some of them might be different
11:58You never know
11:59But it's going to work the same way
12:00Timer's going to come up on the monitor
12:02It'll start counting down as I ask the first question
12:04And we'll just get through as many of them as we can
12:06Let's do it
12:07Alright, so
12:08Solo or as a group
12:11As a group
12:13As a group
12:14You need to have your friends around
12:16To build the environment
12:19That's it
12:20Okay, I respect that
12:21Alright, tea or coffee
12:23Coffee
12:24I'm a big coffee drinker
12:25Writing or performing
12:28Performing, yeah
12:29You need the energy
12:31The energetic punk
12:32That's it
12:33Okay, I get it now
12:34That's what I'm all about
12:35Amazing
12:36Favourite song you have written so far of your new releases
12:40I was like, ooh
12:41I really love Hole in My Head that I just performed
12:44It's something a bit different to what I normally do
12:46It's a bit more kind of like subdued
12:49It's less shouty in your face
12:51And I really like that
12:53Okay, nice
12:54Sweet or savoury?
12:57Sweet
12:57Okay
12:58Oh yeah
12:59Bit of a sweet tooth
13:00I get it
13:01Favourite fellow Kent musician?
13:04Grass smell
13:05I think you've had him on the show
13:07We have recently had him join us
13:09Yeah, he was amazing
13:10He's great
13:11Okay, good choice
13:12First gig you ever played solo?
13:16It was at the Aster Theatre in Deal
13:18About ten, if not longer, years ago
13:21Yeah, and it was great
13:23It really sticks with you
13:25It does, yeah, yeah, yeah
13:26I was supporting someone called Kate Winty
13:27Who I think is still going
13:29I think
13:29She makes amazing music as well
13:31Oh, okay
13:32We'll have to check her out
13:33Maybe get her on the program next
13:35There you go
13:35Okay
13:36One music goal you have for your solo career
13:39To play a show with like Frank Turner
13:43Or Chuck Reagan
13:43Or someone like that
13:44That would be like the goal
13:46Playing with my heroes
13:47I mean, who doesn't want to do that?
13:49That's it
13:49Absolutely
13:50Dream venue to perform in solo
13:52I actually, I'm really lucky
13:57I played Alexandra Palace
13:59For the big tattoo convention
14:00I love tattoos as well
14:01So I think that might be
14:04My favourite place I've ever played
14:05And would be the dream place to play
14:07It was amazing
14:08That's the only venue you ever want to play
14:09Yeah, take me back
14:10Tattoo convention
14:11Absolutely
14:12Well, that is the time there
14:13Great answers
14:14I love those
14:15Thank you
14:15So your next song today
14:17Tell us a bit about it
14:18So this one is
14:20Oh my god
14:21My brain, I'm so sorry
14:23This one is
14:26Hold On
14:27Hold On
14:28Yeah, there you go
14:29This one's called Hold On
14:30And again, this is another new one
14:33This is all about kind of like
14:35Having dreams
14:36And kind of wanting to
14:37To be a rock star
14:40And trying your best to get there
14:42Well, you're one step closer
14:44Take it away
14:45Thank you
14:46Hold on
14:49To what you want
14:51I've been holding on to my dreams
14:54Since I was 17
14:57Hold on
15:02To what you want
15:04I've been holding on to my dreams
15:06Since I was 17
15:08Trying my best to be like the rest
15:11Of the pictures on my wall
15:13Punk rock hall of fame
15:15Cut
15:16Tape
15:17Never framed
15:18So hold on
15:20Hold on tight
15:22I've been holding on to my dreams
15:24White knuckles for the fight
15:27My face will never desecrate
15:29The sight of a sacred place
15:31And I'll sing this loud and clear
15:33Sing it now for all to hear
15:36And I'll never tell anyone
15:37They can be what they were born to be
15:42Warriors and confidants
15:45Never tell anyone
15:46They can be all their own story too
15:51I've got mine and you do you
15:54So take a chance
15:56Take your time
15:58And rearrange it
16:00In your mind
16:03And hold on
16:05Hold on tight
16:07I've been holding on to my dreams
16:09Since I was 17
16:11Trying my best to see the sky
16:14The trees and the valleys
16:15I always do it for the love
16:17And because it's all we've got
16:20So hold on
16:23Hold on
16:27Hold on
16:32Hold on
16:36Hold on
16:39To what you want
16:41I've been holding on to my dreams
16:43Since I was 17
16:45Try my best
16:47To just be like those pictures
16:50On my wall
16:53Amazing
16:59I love that
16:59I think my favourite line in that
17:01Is the holding on to dreams
17:03Since 17
17:03I think that's really telling
17:05Something personal of you
17:06Isn't it not?
17:07Thank you
17:07Thank you
17:08It's kind of
17:08It's all about
17:09I've got such a vivid memory
17:11Of being 17
17:12And having like
17:12All the posters on my wall
17:14Of just all these different
17:15Like singers
17:16And punks
17:17And different things
17:18Like pulled out of magazines
17:19And taped to the wall
17:21And kind of like
17:21Wanting to one day
17:24Like play shows
17:25With these people
17:26Or like you know
17:27And so that's what
17:29That song's about
17:29It's about just
17:30Trying my best
17:30To kind of like
17:31Live up to
17:32Who those people were
17:33You know
17:34And trying to kind of
17:35Embody that myself
17:37In the tiniest little way
17:39Well I think that's
17:40A really interesting
17:41Perspective
17:42To try to
17:42Embody
17:43Another artist
17:45I suppose so
17:46Yeah
17:46Yeah
17:46I think
17:48I think
17:48We all kind of
17:49Take on a little bit
17:50Of the people
17:50We really kind of
17:51Look up to
17:52And yeah
17:54So if you
17:55Were giving advice
17:56To a fellow musician
17:58About
17:59Being on a path
18:00Like that
18:01And kind of
18:02Aiming towards
18:02A similar level
18:04Maybe not being
18:05Exactly another artist
18:06Being their own person
18:07But at the same level
18:08What kind of advice
18:09Would you give them
18:09I think exactly that
18:11I think it's good
18:11To look up to people
18:12But you definitely
18:13Have to be yourself
18:14As well
18:14And just be
18:15Like uniquely you
18:16And just write the music
18:18That you want to write
18:19And what makes you happy
18:20And what you want
18:22To perform as well
18:23Because if that's
18:24The music you're doing
18:24Then hopefully
18:25People will want to
18:25Come out and
18:26See that live as well
18:28You know
18:28That's yeah
18:29That's what I would say
18:30No absolutely
18:31I get that
18:31And I have a feeling
18:33That the crowds
18:34That you draw
18:35Really embody
18:37The vibe that you give off
18:39With the energetic
18:40The punk
18:41The witty humour
18:42You know
18:43All two or three people
18:44Oh I'm sure it's more
18:46So tell me a little bit
18:50About your process
18:52Writing these new songs
18:53As a solo artist
18:54You're not really being
18:55Collaborative with anyone
18:56So do you
18:57Do you face any
18:58Like internal struggles
19:00I guess so
19:02Yeah
19:02I like
19:04I like to read a lot
19:05As well
19:05And I guess
19:07That kind of influences
19:08A lot
19:08The final song
19:09I'm playing tonight
19:10Is about
19:12A book by Jules Worm
19:13And it's also all about
19:16Again the same thing
19:17Of kind of like
19:19Trying to get back
19:20To being yourself
19:21And stuff
19:22But I think
19:22I think it's
19:23It's quite good
19:24To keep reading
19:26And keep kind of like
19:27Getting ideas
19:28From different media
19:29And stuff
19:30And really kind of like
19:31Bringing that all together
19:31And I really enjoy
19:32Kind of like
19:33Reading books
19:34And watching
19:35And watching films
19:36And stuff
19:36And kind of really
19:37Getting kind of like
19:37Concepts and ideas
19:39From all these
19:39Different things
19:40And I listen
19:41I listen to a lot
19:42Of like hip-hop
19:43As well
19:43And like
19:44And rap
19:45There's some amazing
19:46And the kind of wordplay
19:47That people
19:48That people kind of
19:48In that genre
19:49Have
19:50It really kind of
19:51Plays well
19:52Into kind of like
19:53More folky
19:53More punky
19:54Kind of music
19:54And the kind of
19:55The storytelling
19:57And I try and
19:58Kind of bring
19:59All of that together
20:00Into what I do
20:01Yeah
20:02Okay
20:03Now I'm curious
20:04Because you're talking
20:05About pulling from
20:05A lot of different
20:06References
20:06Yeah
20:07Yeah
20:07What's the most
20:08Obscure media
20:09You've used
20:10As an inspiration
20:12For a song
20:12I mean
20:14I mean
20:15I don't know
20:16I don't know
20:17Yeah
20:17I mean
20:19Like I said
20:20This next song
20:20Is about a book
20:21By Jules Verne
20:22So I think
20:22That's quite a niche
20:23Little thing
20:24Maybe
20:24Okay
20:25Tell us a little bit
20:26About that book
20:27Before we get
20:27Into the song
20:27Yeah
20:28So this one's
20:2820,000 weeks
20:29On the sea
20:29This is actually
20:30My latest single
20:32As well
20:32I just released it
20:33On the internet
20:34So I don't know
20:35When this is coming out
20:36But it will be out
20:37When this comes out
20:39So yeah
20:40Yeah
20:41And on the recording
20:42I play some
20:44Electric guitars
20:44And the person
20:46I record with
20:47Ewan Bennett
20:48Shout out
20:48He's amazing
20:49He does some
20:49Amazing drums
20:50On it as well
20:50So it sounds
20:51More of a fuller
20:52Thing than
20:53Just me
20:53On my acoustic
20:55So
20:55Well I can't wait
20:56To hear it
20:56On just the acoustic
20:57With yourself
20:58So take it away
20:59When you're ready
20:59Thank you
21:00Deep down
21:12I'm found
21:13Another vessel
21:14Keep on drowning
21:16And I'm feeling
21:17I'm halfway
21:17Back to home
21:18No thunder
21:22No fear
21:23The world won't
21:24Find us here
21:25In this living
21:27Infinite
21:28I gave away
21:32Five years
21:33Of my life
21:35Trapped in a vessel
21:37Made of steel
21:38Now the frontier
21:42Calls me back
21:44And I know
21:46This life is real
21:48Twenty thousand leaks
21:51Under the growing
21:52Crash is building up
21:54And I see you
21:55When I'm back
21:56On top
21:56With the eddies
22:00Rock
22:01I find myself
22:02Another dock
22:03And I see you
22:05When I'm back
22:05On top
22:06Bell's drum
22:08I'm gone
22:10Another vessel
22:11That's broken down
22:12And I feel
22:13I'll never
22:13Make it home
22:14The tide pools
22:17The moon's full
22:19The world won't
22:20Find us here
22:21In this living
22:22Infinite
22:23Here we go
22:24Here we go
22:25Here we go
22:25I gave away
22:27Five years
22:29Of my life
22:30Trapped in a vessel
22:32Made of steel
22:33Now the frontier
22:37Pulls me back
22:39And I know
22:41This life is real
22:43Twenty thousand leaks
22:46Under the growing
22:47Crash is building up
22:49And I see you
22:50When I'm back on top
22:51Where the eddies rock
22:55I find myself
22:56Another dock
22:58And I see you
22:59When I'm back on top
23:00And I will reach you
23:05From the abyss
23:08Of the sea
23:10When the horizon
23:14Brings
23:16I hold back to me
23:19I gave away
23:23Five years
23:24Of my life
23:26Trapped in a vessel
23:28Made of steel
23:29Now the ocean
