00:00Hi everyone! Hi! Hi everyone! Hi! Oh, it's good to be home!
00:26Thank you! Oh, hi! I'm Andrea! Hi everyone!
00:30Thank you all! Thank you! Thank you!
00:34And Dougie's here too!
00:38Oh, please have a seat!
00:42Please have a seat!
00:46Oh, it's wonderful to be home! And thank you all!
00:50Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
00:54In 20 years, Andrea! My goodness!
00:58I mean, your babies are grown!
01:02Good evening, everyone!
01:04Thank you for supporting Emerge!
01:06Thank you for supporting Emerge!
01:08It is so wonderful to be home and to be back
01:14with all the leaders who are here
01:16and to celebrate this extraordinary organization,
01:22which is an organization of so many exceptional leaders,
01:26those who found the courage to run for office
01:30and those who support them.
01:32Emerge, I will say something you know.
01:36Throughout my entire career and life,
01:38I have always believed in the ideals of our nation.
01:42The ideals reflected in the Declaration of Independence
01:46that all are created equal and endowed by our Creator
01:52with certain inalienable rights.
01:56Ideals advanced and affirmed by the service and sacrifice
02:02generations of patriots.
02:06The ideals that ground the Constitution of the United States,
02:10that here in our country,
02:14power ultimately lies not with the wealthy or well-connected,
02:24but with all of us,
02:26with we the people.
02:32Now, of course,
02:34I recognize that America
02:36has never fully
02:38lived up to these ideals,
02:40that for all the gains
02:42we've made,
02:44the American dream has
02:46for decades been slipping
02:48further out of reach
02:50for so many,
02:52and that the American people
02:54deserve leaders
02:56who make their lives better
03:00and make our country stronger.
03:06But sadly,
03:08we have seen quite the opposite
03:12over these past few months.
03:14Now, I know tonight's event happens to coincide
03:20with the 100 days
03:22after the inauguration,
03:26and I'll leave it to others
03:28to give a full accounting
03:30of what has happened so far.
03:34But I will say this.
03:36Instead of an administration
03:40working to advance
03:42America's highest ideals,
03:44we are witnessing
03:46the wholesale abandonment
03:48of those ideals.
03:50And what we are also seeing
03:52in these last 14 weeks
03:54is Americans using their voice
04:10and showing their courage.
04:12and showing their courage.
04:18We all know President Trump
04:20and his administration
04:22and their allies
04:24are counting on the notion
04:26that fear can be contagious.
04:30They are counting on the notion
04:34that if they make some people afraid,
04:38it will have a chilling effect
04:40on others.
04:42But what they're overlooking,
04:44what they have overlooked,
04:46is that fear is not the only thing
04:50that's contagious.
04:52courage is contagious.
05:02The courage of Americans
05:04who are banding together
05:06in the face of the greatest
05:08man-made economic crisis
05:10in modern presidential history.
05:14Americans across the political spectrum
05:20who are declaring
05:22that the President's reckless tariffs
05:26hurt workers and families
05:28by raising the cost
05:30of everyday essentials,
05:32devastate the retirement accounts
05:36that people spent a lifetime paying into,
05:40and paralyze American businesses,
05:44large and small,
05:46forcing them to lay off people,
05:48to stop hiring
05:50or pause investment decisions.
05:54The courage of Americans
05:58we are seeing who are rallying
06:00at Social Security offices
06:02to protect their hard-earned benefits.
06:06Of Americans who are speaking out
06:08to say,
06:10it is not okay
06:12to violate court orders.
06:14Not okay.
06:16say,
06:20it is not okay
06:22to detain
06:24and disappear
06:26American citizens or anyone
06:28without due process.
06:36The courage of judges
06:38to uphold the rule of law
06:40law in the face of those
06:42who would jail them.
06:46Of universities
06:48that are defying unconstitutional
06:50demands that threaten
06:52the pursuit of truth
06:54and academic independence.
06:56And I will tell you,
07:04the courage of all these Americans
07:06inspires me.
07:08And I have been inspired
07:10by the movements
07:12like the one in Wisconsin
07:14that put Susan Crawford on the Supreme Court.
07:16by the State of the People Power Tour
07:20by the State of the People Power Tour
07:22that is aiming to ignite
07:24a grassroots movement
07:26to lift up voices
07:28and advance freedom and justice.
07:30And by leaders across the spectrum,
07:34including congressional leaders
07:36like Cory Booker,
07:38Chris Van Hollen,
07:40Chris Murphy,
07:42Jasmine Crockett,
07:44Maxwell Frost,
07:46AOC and Bernie Sanders.
07:48All who, in different ways,
07:54have been speaking
07:58with moral clarity
08:00about this moment.
08:04So here's one of the other things
08:06I wanted to talk about tonight.
08:08And to highlight.
08:10So look, some people
08:12are describing what's been happening
08:14in recent months
08:16as absolute chaos.
08:20And of course, I understand why.
08:22And it's certainly true
08:24of those tariffs.
08:26Tariffs that,
08:28as I predicted,
08:30are clearly inviting a recession.
08:34But friends,
08:36please let us not be duped
08:38into thinking
08:40everything is chaos.
08:42I know it may feel that way.
08:44But understand,
08:46what we are, in fact,
08:50witnessing
08:52is a high-velocity event.
08:56Where a vessel
08:58is being used
09:00for the swift implementation
09:02of an agenda
09:04that has been decades
09:06in the making.
09:08An agenda
09:10to slash
09:12public education.
09:14An agenda
09:16to shrink government
09:18and then privatize
09:20its services.
09:22All while giving tax breaks
09:24to the wealthiest among us.
09:26By the way,
09:28an agenda that is not
09:30lowering costs,
09:32not
09:34lowering costs,
09:36not making life
09:38more affordable,
09:40and not
09:42what they promised.
09:44It's an agenda,
09:48a narrow,
09:50self-serving
09:52vision of America.
09:56Where they punish
09:58truth,
10:00favor loyalists,
10:02cash in on their power,
10:04and leave everyone
10:06to fend for themselves.
10:08All while abandoning allies
10:12and retreating from the world.
10:16And folks,
10:18what we are experiencing
10:20right now
10:22is exactly
10:24what they envisioned
10:26for America.
10:28Right now,
10:30we are living
10:32in their vision
10:34for America.
10:38But this is not a vision
10:40that Americans want.
10:42We are living
10:44in a moment
10:46when the checks and balances
10:48upon which we have historically relied
10:50have begun
10:52to buckle.
10:54And we here know
10:56that when the checks and balances
10:58ultimately collapse,
11:00if Congress fails
11:02to do its part,
11:04or if the courts
11:06fail to do their part,
11:08or if both
11:10do their part,
11:12but the President defies them
11:14anyway,
11:16well, friends,
11:17that is called
11:18a constitutional crisis.
11:20And that
11:22is a crisis
11:24that will eventually
11:26impact everyone.
11:28because it would mean
11:30that the rules that protect
11:32our fundamental rights
11:34and freedoms
11:36that ensure
11:38each of us has a say
11:40about how our government works
11:42will no longer matter.
11:44will no longer matter.
11:48And if that happens,
11:50the one check,
11:52the one balance,
11:54the one power
11:56that must not fail
11:58must not fail
12:00is the voice of the people.
12:04that will not fail.
12:12And look,
12:14right now,
12:16I know a lot of folks
12:18are wondering
12:20what's gonna guide us
12:22through this moment?
12:24How are we all going to figure out how to chart the course?
12:30But that's not a reason to throw up our hands.
12:35In fact, please allow me, friends, to digress for a moment.
12:38Okay.
12:40It's kind of dark in here, but I'm asking a show of hands.
12:43Who saw that video from a couple of weeks ago?
12:45The one of the elephants at the San Diego Zoo during the earthquake?
12:49Google it if you've not seen it.
12:56So that scene has been on my mind.
12:59Everybody's asking me, what you've been thinking about these days?
13:01Well, so in the video, for those who haven't seen it, here those elephants were.
13:11And as soon as they felt the earth shaking beneath their feet,
13:16they got in a circle.
13:19And stood next to each other to protect the most vulnerable.
13:27Think about it.
13:28What a powerful metaphor.
13:30Because we know those who try to incite fear are most effective when they divide and conquer.
13:45When they separate the herd.
13:50When they try to make everyone think they are alone.
13:56But in the face of crisis, the lesson is don't, don't scatter.
14:06The instinct has to be to immediately find and connect with each other.
14:17And to know that the circle will be strong.
14:29So I'll end with this.
14:31I am not here tonight to offer all the answers, but I am here to say this.
14:36You are not alone and we are all in this together.
14:42And straight talk, things are probably going to get worse before they get better.
14:49But we are ready for it.
14:51But we are ready for it.
14:54We are not going to scatter.
14:56We are going to stand together, everyone a leader, and emerge.
15:05You have a special role to play.
15:06You have a special role to play.
15:10Organizing is as important as ever.
15:15Mobilizing is as important as ever.
15:19Running for office is as important as ever.
15:24So please, everyone here, please keep doing what you are doing.
15:30And to everyone, let's lock it in.
15:33Lock it in, lock it in, gear up for the hard work ahead.
15:42And please, always remember, this country is ours.
15:53It doesn't belong to whoever is in the White House.
15:57It belongs to you.
15:59It belongs to us.
16:02It belongs to we, the people.
16:09God bless you.
16:10And God bless America.
16:11Thank you all.
16:12Thank you all.
16:13Thank you all.
