On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Kanpur to meet the family of Shubham Dwivedi, a 31-year-old businessman tragically killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Dwivedi, who had recently married in February, was among the 26 civilians killed when terrorists opened fire on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the visit, Rahul Gandhi consoled the bereaved family and assured them of his support. He informed them that both he and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had urged the central government to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the incident. Gandhi also pledged to write to the Prime Minister, advocating for Shubham to be accorded martyr status. He facilitated a phone conversation between the family and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who expressed solidarity and promised to raise their demands at the appropriate forums.

Shubham's wife, Aishanya, and his father, Sanjay Dwivedi, have been vocal in their appeal for the government to recognize Shubham's sacrifice by granting him martyr status. They emphasized the importance of acknowledging the victims of such attacks to ensure their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Dwivedi family, offering condolences and assuring them of strict action against the perpetrators. Shubham was cremated with full state honors, and his funeral witnessed widespread public participation, with many expressing solidarity and protesting against terrorism.

The Pahalgam attack has reignited national discourse on terrorism and the need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of citizens, especially in conflict-prone regions.
