00:00we have kylie from the beaches with us today ahead of their appearance at ulterior may 10th
00:11at toyota music factory uh that she was just uh before we started this interview going why is
00:16there a british guy on the camera from dallas this is very confusing for my alt 1037 texas appearance
00:23i was definitely very confused there for a second but i'm so happy to talk to you
00:28yeah good to talk to you we'll talk about ulterior and playing dallas uh in in just a minute i want
00:33to talk about this new album that you have coming at the end of august right um album number three
00:39now people in bands talk about their debut album having all the time in the world and then some
00:45people have difficult second album syndrome have you heard about this theory that album number three
00:52is the one that either sets you up for a long-term career or the one after which you're going to go
00:57away because it's an album about that yeah not the staying power like people think that the second
01:03album could be a little bit of a decider but the third album is the is the one a lot of people say
01:09oh totally and i think going into the studio for this record we were very like aware of that we
01:15definitely put like a lot of pressure on ourselves in the beginning when we were first writing it um
01:21but eventually we found our groove and like we've been in this band for 12 years now and there's
01:27obviously no way that we're stopping at this point so um it was a really fun process to you know get
01:34back and be creative again you know we've been on such a crazy kind of like schedule last year we
01:40toured basically the entire year so coming home and able to kind of reflect on those experiences
01:45really helped kind of create this really um interesting record when you hit the road and
01:52you do do as many shows as you do does that help you be more creative do you think providing you have
01:57the right amount of time off afterwards just because of the experiences of having played more
02:01and i guess having seen more of the world i mean totally yeah it also definitely kind of is a little
02:07bit of a isolating thing because a lot of people obviously aren't you know touring and in bands and
02:13like basically like you know doing sound check every day and waiting around so your experiences
02:18definitely kind of shift from like the normal um average person but for us i think what's really
02:24important is when we are back home to go out and see our friends to somehow get in really messy
02:31relationships in the middle of this so we have stuff to write about um and that's kind of what we pull
02:37from like our i guess we live on kind of two different extremes so it is interesting trying to
02:43find things to write about well i wanted to ask about the messy relationships because the album's
02:47called no hard feelings right and uh there there is a i think a thing on on your website about the
02:53fact that previously you were blaming things on x's but now in the lyrics to the new songs there's
02:59more of uh the girls taking responsibility for things that you've done maybe not always in
03:04relationships but just in the last couple of years absolutely i think um for this album we really
03:10kind of wanted to focus on like having some accountability um and realizing that like oh
03:15hey we're kind of putting ourselves in situations that maybe aren't serving us and like why are we
03:22doing that and we actually all have started going to therapy even though in blame brett we say we're
03:27not ready for therapy we're going to therapy now well you've moved on this is the third album right
03:32third album is absolutely i was going to say is is the album like therapy for the band or as a result
03:40of actually going to therapy have you managed to channel that into the songwriting totally i think
03:46it's a mix of both like you know getting in the studio and being able to like work on these songs
03:51and kind of work through these tough experiences that we've gone through as friends but also as like
03:56co-writers together it is really kind of the ultimate form of release and like feeling better
04:03from those situations i think obviously also going to therapy and definitely having some more
04:09perspective and like tools to get through those difficult times is good instead of just blaming
04:14brett on for everything but yeah sorry my mom was calling me sorry you say i'm in therapy i literally am
04:24sorry mom i'll call you back um but yeah it was a really kind of uh therapeutic experience i think
04:31for all of us and uh we're really proud of the the work that we put into this record the the lyrics
04:37that the beaches have and obviously we are yet to hear a lot of the lyrics on this album but they've
04:41always been very sharp and i and i wondered if there is a particular poet in the band or if you are
04:47all masters of the english language and you know the points and the stories that you're trying to get
04:53across but you kind of analyze the lyrics because the storytelling whether you're blaming brett or
04:58you're taking more accountability for yourself that's always been there but if we just look at
05:03the way that some of the lines are structured i mean they're you know if you were to take away
05:07the music you could just look at the lyric sheet and go some very good poetry here oh well thank you
05:13so much um my sister jordan she's kind of the main lyricist in the band and she's just always
05:19really been obsessed with like reading and poetry and i think it just comes very uh naturally to her
05:27she also has a really kind of weird sense of humor so a lot of the words like in our songs there's like
05:33a lot of cheeky kind of funny moments we just like to take ourselves not super seriously and we like to
05:39convey that with the words let's talk about sisters being in bands i want to know is it as difficult as
05:46brothers being in bands because i mean oasis is the go-to example but there are others normally if
05:52you get brothers in bands it's a recipe for disaster how does that play with sisters honestly i think it's
05:58the most incredible partnership ever i think we've always gotten along really well and been incredibly
06:04close we're only a year and a half apart um but it's kind of like we share one hive mind and like
06:11we both kind of like you know feel and think all the same things about the process so it's like
06:17having someone to kind of back you up the entire time um and i feel that way about all the girls in
06:22the band but working with my sister has been like such a dream come true we've only gotten in a couple
06:27physical fights not quite like oasis level no one smashed anyone's instruments and likely to cause you
06:35know a 15 year hiatus no it's more passive aggressive kind of like you know little comments
06:41and then getting mad at each other when she takes my clothes and vice versa it's a lot more surface level
06:48but no it has been so much fun being in a band with my sister and i think women honestly just work
06:54really well together i think we're all like very able to kind of um you know uh what's the word that
07:02i'm thinking i'm sorry i'm like blanking on it where we're all able to wow communicate yes that
07:13communicate will do perhaps further down the line you could be therapy for oasis because my theory on
07:20oasis is this reunion's exciting but it's only really happening because no got divorced and his
07:25wife got the house right so after he's earned a lot of money new house and then doesn't need to be
07:29around his brother anymore but maybe you guys could step in and go we've been to therapy we're
07:34sisters in a band we know a lot about keeping it together and we can uh we can give you therapy
07:39on how siblings can actually coexist i'd love to give them some tips i think that would be a really
07:45really fun experience i mean jordan and i are actually really big oasis fans and we are going to
07:49see them this summer tickets um but yeah if they uh they want some pointers we can we can have a
07:56session with them for sure i think it will be great people keep on talking about the fact that
07:59you know they might walk off stage after the first three songs or it might not happen at all but
08:03i see like you know noel wants to get a new house and liam is engaged to his manager and they're both
08:10now mature ish and in their 50s so there's enough motivation around them to actually probably do really
08:16good shows maybe better than the oasis shows back in the day when everyone was wasted and people
08:21weren't getting along totally i think um it's like gonna be a really exciting thing to see how
08:27that plays out i'm i'm so curious like i don't know if it is gonna be the kind of thing where
08:31they both fly in separately and then like leave separately i think it'll be i think it'll be good
08:36i think i think they'll keep it together um let's talk about your first experience at coachella which
08:42was just a few weeks ago right yes that was so fun i'm honestly still on like a little bit of a high
08:49from it it was such a crazy festival to experience like truly unlike anything we've ever played just
08:57like amount of like famous people walking around and like being in the desert it just is so cool
09:04being four girls from canada to go and play that because it's like been on our bucket list for so long
09:10and i think you were one of only two canadian acts on the bill as well so you were flying the flag for
09:15canada that is true there are a lot of canadian flags in the audience which was nice so yeah just
09:22i guess that experience of being in the desert at a festival that is so well known and just unique in
09:27so many ways after you've played a lot of festivals you know it must be something to get such a fresh
09:32new experience from one that's just not another festival in another field totally it just it was
09:39really kind of like eye-opening and you know doing festivals like all over the world it's so
09:44interesting to kind of see how each one is different um like the european ones that we do
09:48are always like super fun and people are just like so um they have so much love for music there
09:55and coachella it definitely like some of the crowds were definitely like a little bit more tame
10:00um which was kind of interesting to see but people really came through for our set and we had like
10:06a full tent both days that we did it and that was just so awesome that's great because i've never
10:12been but i've heard sometimes you get some people that are kind of a bit spoiled in that part of the
10:17world and there's a kind of arms crossed all right you're the beach come on then entertain us kind of
10:22attitude totally totally i've heard that from my friends who have played it that it can be like
10:27you know kind of a little bit of a dead show for the audience like i think because all the people who
10:34go i think are very used to going and obviously a lot of them are in the industry and so it's
10:39definitely a hard crowd to impress but i think we managed to do it tell me about your dj sets i don't
10:45know if you dj'd at coachella but obviously the song that we're playing at the moment is last girls
10:49at the party and if people pre-order the album there are dj sets that they can get the chance to
10:54to go see that's kind of part of the setup for the new album because the new album is not until the
10:59the end of uh august so i'm guessing there can be oasis apart from oasis what what do you do if you
11:04go see if you go to a beaches dj party oh it's super fun we had a our first one in la and basically
11:12we all kind of take turns doing our sets and it's just like such a fun way to kind of get to know
11:22our fans a little bit better to be able to party with them because we love to go out we love to socialize
11:28we're all pretty social girls so to be able to do that with our fans in such a like community-based
11:33way it feels really fun um the parties are definitely pretty wild i was pretty surprised
11:38i'm a little bit nervous to go and do two weeks of them oh okay this could be subject matter for
11:44album number four maybe it could be let's talk about uh dallas you're playing alterium may 10th so i
11:54look this up and i don't know how i missed this show but according to the website i was looking at
11:58your last dallas show uh was in the back room of the ruins bar in deep ellen which i live about six
12:06minutes walk from do you remember that show i do remember that show that show is awesome um it was
12:13one of our like that was basically i think when we were just starting to tease our last album yes it
12:21would have been 2023 so it's before blame brett became what it what it became etc so because that
12:26is a really cool venue for bands that are kind of like on the way up because the actual bar out the
12:31front is super cool and then it's almost like this little secret room out the back that unless you can
12:36hear a band making a noise through the door you wouldn't even know was there exactly no it was such
12:41a cool show and that was kind of one of the ones for us that we felt like oh we're starting to have
12:47like some buzz here because it stole out and we were teasing music and it kind of felt like
12:53everything was clicking and that was our last tour that we did in a van too right the last show of the
13:00tour so we were just like dead tired and like basically it hadn't been sleeping the entire time
13:05just been crammed in a van for like a month um and to have that show go and be so fun it was like
13:11incredible we're very excited to come back to dallas we always have a lot of fun playing in texas
13:16well we're very pleased to have you come back at the uh ruins bar's got great tacos we're gonna
13:21have hitardo barbecue which is the barbecue backstage at our event so you'll be able to get
13:26that that whole uh texas experience and uh treat us to some new songs before the album is out in august
13:32right absolutely we can't wait to play some new ones for you guys all right well we will see you
