Thousands of people flock to Rome after the death of Pope Francis.
He died on 21 April 2025 (Easter Monday) at the age of 88 at Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City.
He had served as pope, the head of the Catholic Church, for twelve years since his election on 13 March 2013. He was the second pope to die in office in the 21st century, after John Paul II in 2005.
