00:00I will say that, I didn't think he could make that save, the Trossard save, and he was close in, he was only about eight yards out at the edge of the box hitting that, so that was a brilliant save, low down to his left hand side.
00:10There was nothing wrong with that finish either, really was it, the Trossard won, he did all what you would do as a striker.
00:14Yeah, yeah, go across the keeper, and you're kind of hoping, if the keeper does save it, he powers it out and someone else taps it in, but to touch it round the post like that and, yeah, stop it.
00:22It was interesting to see just a build-up to that chance with Declan Rice marauding forward like that, we did peg before the match the fact that that wouldn't be happening as much, and it probably didn't, but that was a rare enough sight.
00:34It was an isolation, yeah, it was such a shame, we spoke about it, these are ramifications of not having parity in the team, you had to pick and choose his moments in terms of when to get up the pitch,
00:43but you can see how he affects the game when he dries out from that central midfield area, and that's going to be key in the away leg at PSG,
00:50you have to give him that freedom to make those decisions to get the team up the pitch.
00:54PSG have thrown away much bigger leads than this, they nearly did it against Aston Villa in the last round, so it is still alive in the second leg, thanks partly to a couple of chances they missed late on.
01:02Yeah, yeah, when after the Arsenal chances, PSG kind of go into the game, Barcola came on, fresh legs, and he just lays it off, moves inside, does a one-two with Ramos, and he's in.
01:12And you're just thinking, slotted, slotted, and he kind of drags it past the post.
01:15I likened it to Lukaku finish, but Lukaku always found the bottom corner, you know, it just slipped past the post, and you're thinking, you know, Arsenal could come back here,
01:23it looked like one of these games is dead and gone, and Saliba stops here, plays the offside, and then just lets him have a finish.
01:28It's a strange finish, I think, I think he kind of, it's good if he's got no time, but he's got plenty of time to try and slot it around.
01:34I'm lucky to hit the crossbar to get so much height off his toe, but, you know, he's a better striker than that, he should be finding corners.
01:39It's a big worry, though, 40 yards straight ball over your two centre-halves, he has time to take a touch, have another touch, have a look, see who's around him, and then decide to take the shot on.
01:47That's a massive win.
01:48The only thing you would say is because there's such big chances, and they're late on ones, 83, ones, 85, massive chances within the tie, I mean, the two ties.
01:54If one of them goes on Arsenal, for me, you're gone.
01:57So Arteta look on that goes, we're still very much in the tie, we've still got an outside chance.
02:02Go on.
02:02Oh, that was a bit of a contradiction in there, very much in the tie with an outside chance.
02:06Is that not the same thing?
02:08What I'm saying is...
02:09That sounds like a bit of the opposite.
02:10I know what you're saying.
02:11No, but if it's 2-0, then it's...
02:13Yeah, absolutely, right, 2-0, it's over, you're right.
02:16Especially going out to Paris as well.
02:17I think it was vice versa, if they had to went to Paris and got a 1-0 defeat out there, and go back to the Emirates next week, you'd be going, they've got a good chance.
02:24Well, I think certainly Arsenal are going to have to do a lot more than they did tonight.
02:26We're going to have a look at some of where things went wrong.
02:28You could have picked out probably 20 of these clips.
02:31Tim Bryan, he's in trouble, absolutely right.
02:33Defensive instinct, his arms comes out, but he doesn't do enough there for me.
02:36If he gets hold of his jersey, if he holds him and actually impedes his forwards and momentum a little bit more, I think it is a penalty.
02:42I think he let go of him just enough in time.
02:44I would 100% say if the ref gives a penalty, there's no way in VAR are going to go, you've got that wrong.
02:49There's a serious mistake by the referee.
02:52I think if he gives a penalty on the pitch, it's stonewall penalty.
02:55But why didn't they give the penalty then, if it was such a bad decision?
02:57Because they've got the comfort blanket of VAR and they think, well, if it's that bad a decision, then they can help me out.
03:01If it's that bad a decision, you give the penalty.
03:03You tell the referee you've made a wrong decision, it's a penalty.
03:05They haven't done that.
03:06Why haven't they done it?
03:07Because he's gone with the wrong...
03:08He doesn't think it's a penalty?
03:08No, because they've raised the bar and they've gone with the on-field referee.
03:11He's raising the bar.
03:12Yeah, it could be that way.
03:14But I tell you what, the UEFA delegate tonight is Padder Ryan, an Irishman.
03:17So maybe he'll have a look at all that.
03:19We've got an Irish connection to the game tonight, as well as one of the substitutes for Arsenal as well.
03:23You got a man.
03:23We don't know.
03:24We don't know much about Padder Ryan's background, I've got to be honest with you.
03:26But we'll see what happens there.
03:27It was a bad night for Arsenal there, fans.
03:30Not happy with the goal that was disallowed for offside from Mikel Moreno.
03:34But there was nothing really to argue about with that one.
03:37Donnarumma, again, one of the best players for PSG.
03:40We're back after these.
03:47They seem to be getting on top of the blackout in Spain today, which is just as well
03:54because we've got Barcelona versus Inter live tomorrow in studio from 7 o'clock
03:58and Man United away in Bilbao for their Europa League final on Thursday.
04:01That's an 8 o'clock kickoff in Premier Sports 1.
04:03Spurs versus Bodo Glimt is on Premier Sports 2.
04:08So we want to start looking ahead to the second leg here and what Arsenal can do.
04:12Obviously, they've got to score goals, at least one and probably a few more than that.
04:15But they also maybe need to be a little bit more shored up in defence.
04:19We talked about Kivior pre-match.
04:21Kenny, you're not 100% sold on him.
04:23No, not a lot of people beat the drum about Arsenal turning this game over from the second leg.
04:27But for me, I don't think it's possible.
04:29This is the biggest reason why.
04:30We are covering it live, Kenny.
04:31So let's just keep a little bit of possibility there.
04:33No, no, no.
04:33But you have to call it as you see it.
04:35And this lag is just a weak link in the team.
04:37It's as simple as that.
04:39And some poor moments this evening caused a lot of nervousness in the team.
04:44I mean, that's a really poor pass.
04:48That's obviously enough at this level of football.
04:50It just can't happen.
04:51They even look at the weight of the pass into Lewis Skelly here.
04:53It absolutely drills it at him.
04:55I mean, it's a real worry.
04:56You kind of just get a sense of nervousness off him and a little bit of a mini panic here.
05:00There again, more precise pass than Bele's in.
05:03There's too many moments like this.
05:04There really is.
05:05I wouldn't go as far as to say he's out of his depth at this level.
05:08But I think if he gets stress tested in the second leg in Paris, and I think he will.
05:13I think he's going to fold.
05:15Because he was a real struggle from there, second half, alongside Saliba.
05:18And as good as Saliba is, you can't carry somebody at the heart of your defence.
05:22You're talking about Parity coming and getting a bit of a screen in front.
05:25I understand that.
05:26Saliba alongside him.
05:27But there's going to be moments in the game he's just going to have to defend his area,
05:30the pitch 1v1, and make good decisions.
05:33And over the last couple of games that I've seen him,
05:35hasn't shown me anything new I don't already know.
05:37I think he's a decent enough skin.
05:38But at this level, I think he's weak.
05:41And he can get at him.
05:43And the second leg, I think PSG will.
05:44What I found interesting looking back at that package, actually,
05:46a lot of the problems there were in possession.
05:48In reasonably comfortable possession.
05:51It wasn't necessarily even just the defensive stuff.
05:54Yeah, and it does send like a nervousness through the team as well.
05:57And even the talk about the fans being quiet.
05:59When he's giving passes like that, and PSG are breaking at the heart of your defence.
06:02Because he's done something, a mistake.
06:04Then I think that spreads through the team.
06:06You know, the nerves or the tension.
06:09Such a big game.
06:10He did have a poor game tonight.
06:12I mean, he'd done okay in Madrid, actually.
06:13And he got a bit of pretty high praise after the Madrid game.
06:17But then was it because Mbappé and co. weren't at the races?
06:20But again, going back to next week, they're still very much in the title.
06:24Arsenal don't get me wrong.
06:25But PSG at home are a totally different animal.
06:28They really are.
06:28They really go for the throat.
06:30And I think KVR will be asked some serious questions next week.
06:33Luis Enrique did say pre-match.
06:35It's a very different PSG team to the one that came here in the league phase
06:38and were beaten comfortably in early October.
06:41He was right.
06:41Here he is.
06:43Luis, well done.
06:44You've had some great performances against English clubs in this competition.
06:47But to win here today, what's your verdict?
06:49Well, I think emotions are at that level in those kind of matches that it's difficult to analyze a match like that.
07:00Very difficult to play.
07:01Great atmosphere.
07:04But I think we show the kind of team we are.
07:08We try to play in our way.
07:10We score the first goal in the first two or three minutes playing the way we try to play.
07:16I'm happy.
07:18We suffer a lot sometimes of the match.
07:21We could score even the second goal.
07:23But I think there is still a match, a second match.
07:29And it's going to be very tough.
07:31Do you feel you should have scored more and won by more?
07:33Or are you grateful to your goalkeeper again?
07:35Well, that's the work of goalkeepers, no?
07:40Save the team.
07:42They work every single day for that.
07:45And we need in that semifinal, you need all the players at the high level perform.
07:53And I think all of them for both teams, all the goalkeepers were great.
07:59Did experience tell today because you've been in a Champions League semifinal as a manager,
08:04most of your players have been in a Champions League semifinal as a manager,
08:07but Arsenal haven't been in this situation before?
08:11Well, I think it's not important in that moment.
08:15When you feel that energy that both teams create into the pitch,
08:23I think we need to prepare the second match.
08:26It's going to be difficult.
08:27The result, it means a little bit of advantage for us.
08:32But I think we need to go through that match with the same mentality.
08:40And we are going to suffer, we know that.
08:43And I hope we can, our supporters in our stadium and with our atmosphere,
08:50I think we can go through the final.
08:53That's our message, but there is still one match.
08:58Thank you, well done.
09:00He's dead right about goalkeepers, isn't he?
09:02You don't praise the postman for delivering posts, Shay.
09:05I was waiting for him to break in the full Roy Queen there.
09:07Do your job.
09:08Make a save.
09:09That's your job.
09:10That's the Spanish version of Roy Queen there.
09:12Yeah, exactly.
09:13It's along those lines, isn't it?
09:14But he is right.
09:14I mean, Donor, we made some big saves tonight.
09:16Lewis and Ricky is an impressive character.
09:18We've talked a lot about the job that he's done this season.
09:20Are we seeing the fruits of that now as this campaign develops,
09:23that they are the real deal?
09:25Oh, they are, yeah.
09:26When you're in possession and out of possession,
09:28I think, obviously, what's held him back for a number of years
09:31really is a kind of defensive structure
09:33and even mindset, collective mindset out of possession of the football.
09:35Having the carry players really out of possession of the football
09:38and Mbappe, Neymar kind of spring to mind.
09:40I don't think you can do that.
09:41When you get to the business end of this elite kind of competition,
09:45you know, everybody needs to be in and out of possession.
09:47So you really sense that this group has come together
09:50in a very short period of time
09:51because they weren't, when they first went to the Emirates area
09:53in the season, we saw a little bit kind of disjointed,
09:55kind of a work in progress.
09:57But, you know, four or five months later,
09:59it's, you know, they're almost unrecognisable.
10:01They're together, they look like a real team.
10:03They're working hard for each other, backing each other up.
10:05They've got really individual quality within the team,
10:07but they're digging in for each other
10:09and showing a good kind of collective mentality when they need to.
10:12They're a little vulnerable at set pieces.
10:13They've conceded a lot of those in their own domestic league this season
10:16and they nearly conceded one today, albeit correctly.
10:19Yeah, I'm really surprised with the line here.
10:21As a goalkeeper, like, I would not be happy at all how deep they are.
10:24They got away with it because, obviously, Moreno,
10:26as the ball's played, you can see it here,
10:28the semi-automated offside picks him up.
10:30He's in an offside position.
10:32But again, any touch from a forward
10:34or even your own defender at this stage,
10:36you've got no time to react as a goalkeeper.
10:38They're very, very deep.
10:39He is offside.
10:40That's what it shows you.
10:41It's took a while to get there.
10:42Yeah, but if the line sort of starts higher up,
10:45Donnarumma, talking about Donnarumma, 6'7",
10:46he just comes and collects that.
10:48Because his defence is so deep on him,
10:50you know, it's going to cause a problem.
10:51And again, second leg, they'll depend heavy on set plays.
10:55They've only got, we talked before about the two guys at the back
10:57and even Marquinhos is not the biggest to defend.
11:00Arsenal have got some big guys that can score goals.
11:02Mikel Arteta usually strikes a fairly positive figure.
11:05Here he is.
11:08Mikel, a lot of frustration, a lot of energy tonight.
11:10What's your verdict?
11:12We're disappointed with the results.
11:13Obviously, we put so much into the game.
11:16It's true that the first 10, 15 minutes,
11:18we struggle to get momentum
11:20and to get the dominance that we wanted to find,
11:23especially because we were in very efficient moment.
11:26We regained the ball and where we want it.
11:28And that caused us a few issues.
11:30But regardless of that,
11:31we didn't have anything apart from the goal.
11:32It's a very individual moment.
11:34That's the margins in this level.
11:37And after that, I think the team went better and better and better.
11:40And disappointing not to get a draw list.
11:42It was a 26-pass move for Paris Saint-Germain's goal.
11:45Do you look at that as great play
11:47or do you look as well at your team
11:48maybe being caught out of position a little?
11:50There is always having credit to them
11:52because they get out from a situation that is completely close.
11:55It's in the weak side.
11:56That's what they do.
11:57They bring the nine very, very far from the reference
11:58of your central defenders.
12:00And after that, a lot of things have still to happen.
12:02We have seven players behind the ball
12:04when the ball arrives to wide areas.
12:06That's what they do.
12:07And they were very clinical.
12:08So sometimes you have to just recognise the talent of the position.
12:11There was a great noise throughout tonight
12:13and most of all early in the second half
12:15when Marino scores.
12:16You just didn't have that lift-off moment.
12:19That was a great timing.
12:21And that's the margin.
12:22That's millimeters of sight.
12:23The action of Martinelli is through one-on-one.
12:26The keeper makes a big save.
12:28He's done it in the previous games against Liverpool and Villa.
12:30Leo Trosari is completely on one-on-one as well
12:34and he makes the save.
12:35That's the margins.
12:36That's the level in this semifinal.
12:38Thomas Partey has been such a part of what you've done
12:42in the Champions League and especially in the last tie.
12:45Did you miss him tonight?
12:46I don't know.
12:47I think Declan and Mikel were enormous today.
12:49He'll add something, though, coming back, Thomas,
12:51in terms of what he does give you maybe in the balance,
12:54both in midfield and in attack?
12:55He gives options.
12:56He gives us a different threat as well in the box.
12:59We're having Mikel the possibility to play him there.
13:01He gives us flexibility and options to change the game as well.
13:04So it's all good.
13:05So what do you learn from tonight for next week?
13:07Listen, I know you'll review the tape, of course,
13:09but what do you take sort of instantly about tonight
13:12and your feeling for next week?
13:13That it's half-time and we have a big chance to be in the final.
13:16Make it happen, as the banner says.
13:18Exactly.
13:22What about the options he's talking about there?
13:24It sounds to me like he's leaning towards when Partey comes back,
13:26maybe putting Marino up front again
13:28and just having that physical sort of presence.
13:30Yeah, especially on Marquinhos, I think it's a good option to have.
13:33I think they obviously missed Partey in there,
13:35but they missed that physical presence up front.
13:37Every time they were kind of breaking forward,
13:38there wasn't that player to hit, the striker to hit.
13:41I mean, Trosser's a good player, but he was drifting out wide.
13:43He likes getting on the ball and running that player.
13:45So Marino's a good option for him.
13:47Obviously, he's not an out-and-out striker,
13:48but he's done well there in the last month.
13:50Yeah, does that matter that he's not a natural striker?
13:52He's been pretty adept.
13:53He seems to have made an impact in most games.
13:55Yeah, and it's worked, and they felt confident doing it.
13:57And I think that's a lot as well.
13:59The wingers are working off of him, getting the breaking ball,
14:02and especially Marquinhos, he's not the biggest centre-back,
14:04so he can dominate him.
14:05What do you reckon?
14:06Yeah, I think the slight weaknesses, Marquinhos,
14:09I don't necessarily think Marino will take advantage of that
14:11in terms of pace and getting on his shoulder.
14:13Physically, he might kind of out-jump him on occasions.
14:15But it was interesting tonight,
14:16any time Hakimi vacated his right-back position,
14:19he even came into central midfield, a hybrid position at times.
14:23And Marquinhos got himself voicing against Martinelli
14:25and had to drift out and deal with Martinelli.
14:28That was an issue for him, Marquinhos.
14:29He hasn't got the leg speed that he had three or four years ago.
14:32So that's a narrative for me.
14:33Can you get Martinelli 1v1?
14:36Not so much Marino up there getting onto the shoulder of Marquinhos,
14:39but Marquinhos, can you keep him a little bit higher up the pitch,
14:42encourage Hakimi up the pitch or into those central midfield areas,
14:45and actually get it to space around Marquinhos,
14:49which I think Martinelli can do.
14:51Arsenal need to be better.
14:52Obviously need to be a good bit better.
14:53But do you think PSG can actually get better as well,
14:55especially as you say, Shea playing in Paris?
14:57Yeah, well, what I've seen and what we've watched on here all season,
15:00especially at home, they're a different animal.
15:02I mean, they were good tonight.
15:04And again, the two chances at the end, they could have been out of sight.
15:06But at home, they're relentless.
15:08They're on the front foot.
15:10You know, Enrique mentions the crowd at home as well as there.
15:12Last year with Newcastle, it is a special atmosphere there.
15:15It really is.
15:15They don't stop singing for the whole game.
15:18You know, it's a big ass for Arsenal to go there and turn this around.
15:21But again, they went to Madrid, didn't they,
15:22and won the last game away from home.
15:25So they can do it.
15:26They're very much in the tie.
15:27And as Arteta says, it's only half time.
15:29It's only half time.
15:30We will bring you the second half of that next week.
15:31As for tomorrow night, we're on air from 7 o'clock
15:33for Barcelona against Inter.
15:35That should be a cracking game.
15:36I need one of you to fill out the panel for tomorrow.
15:38Who am I looking at here?
15:39Sorry, Kenny, just because of your opinion on the penalty,
15:41I have to go with Shea if you're OK to come on board.
15:44I'll be back.
15:44There we go.
15:45Shea's back tomorrow night.
15:46Thanks to Kenny and to Shane for tonight.
15:48We'll talk to you again in 7 o'clock tomorrow.
15:50Take care.
