00:06He's standing here looking around. This is mine. I'm now in charge. I've done it.
00:11The Nazis had four years, four years, stripping Paris of its artistic treasure.
00:18Hitler and the Nazis sent 30,000 rail cars of loot back to Germany.
00:23Much remains missing, including artworks by Picasso, Renoir and Matisse worth millions today.
00:31It's not just art, is it? It's furniture, it's grand pianos, it's objects.
00:36Anything that can be of use, can be of value.

00:45At the end of World War II, the Allies made a series of shocking discoveries,
00:51hidden in trains, bunkers and deep underground.
00:55They found mountains of stolen treasure.
00:58That must have been like going into Aladdin's cave.

01:04and committed the greatest theft in history.
01:08Now, a team of investigators is opening up cold case files of Nazi plunder still missing today.
01:15We're talking about things that are worth tens of millions of dollars.
01:18Robert Edsel is author of the best-selling book turned Hollywood movie The Monuments Man
01:23and an expert in Nazi-looted treasure.
01:27Hundreds of thousands of objects are still missing.
01:29Well, we have a lot of digging to do.
01:31Joining him is Second World War historian James Holland.
01:35None of this was really his. He'd just taken it.
01:38And investigative journalist Connor Woodman.

02:02To the Monuments Man Foundation headquarters in Dallas, the team is embarking on a new investigation.

02:49with stolen objects and so many things are still missing
02:52and that's our focus in May 1940
02:55Hitler unleashed the blitzkrieg on Western Europe
02:58in just six weeks
03:02his armies conquered the Netherlands Belgium
03:05France
03:10and the city he considered the ultimate prize Paris
03:19Robert and historian James Holland begin their hunt
03:23by retracing one of the most infamous sightseeing trips in history

03:32here we are driving in the footsteps of Hitler on that
03:35famous infamous tour of Paris
03:38it's amazing looking at that film footage Paris is so quiet
03:4380% of the population have already evacuated
03:46he's almost got a ghost to tell
03:48but it's here that he stands up
03:52wanting to have a look for himself
03:55I mean the idea there's no security
03:57there's the perfect chance for someone to take a shot at him
04:00but he's just oblivious to those kinds of risks
04:03I think he's so mesmerized and lost in the moment of what this visit is all about
04:07yeah and I'm still so struck by the idea that that Hitler's come not with his military commanders
04:13but with honor breaker
04:16yeah who a great sculptor
04:17someone who generates good art in Hitler's view
04:20yeah
04:21he's got spear with him his favorite architect
04:23you know it just says this is not a victory tour
04:26this is an art and architecture tour
04:29the dictator made nine stops including the Arc de Triomphe
04:36the Opera House
04:38Napoleon's Tomb
04:40and most famously
04:41the Trocadero
04:43overlooking the Eiffel Tower
04:45pretty amazing thing huh
04:47oh yeah really just
04:49dominates the city doesn't it
04:51for Hitler
04:52a man who considered himself an artistic genius
04:54the visit was opportunity not just to admire
04:58but dominate as well
05:00this film footage
05:03some of the most famous and chilling shot during the entire war
05:07was powerful propaganda
05:09it said
05:10Paris belongs to me
05:12he's standing here looking around

05:24but when we are through with Berlin
05:26Paris will be a shadow
05:28rather than destroy
05:31Hitler plundered
05:33Hitler's got the entire damn city
05:35to himself
05:36and what's going to play out
05:38over the next four years
05:39it's the fleecing of this country
05:41from its artistic treasure
05:42yeah
05:43the Germans when they come to France
05:44they're like kids in a sweet shop
05:46they just clear it out
05:48on June 30th 1940
05:51Hitler issues an order
05:53safeguarding all artworks in France
05:55it was a euphemism
05:58wholesale plunder
06:00was about to begin
06:01the French government
06:04had long feared a German invasion
06:05and began emptying Paris' greatest museum
06:08the Louvre
06:09as early as 1938
06:11by the time Hitler arrived
06:15its treasures were carefully hidden
06:17across the country
06:18but other valuables
06:20especially private art collections
06:22remained
06:22and became prime targets
06:25they've got them lined up
06:27one after another
06:28backing up trucks
06:30emptying galleries
06:31targeting works of art
06:32it's an industrial scale looting
06:34but it's not just art
06:36is it
06:36it's furniture
06:37it's grand pianos
06:39anything that can be of use
06:40can be of value
06:41over the next four years
06:46the Nazis stripped the city's
06:48great collections bare
06:49thousands of masterpieces
06:52and other irreplaceable treasures
06:54are still missing today
06:55the team's mission

07:06this is an important part of the city
07:08we're just a couple of blocks off
07:10the Champs-Elysees
07:11but in 1940
07:13this street housed
07:15some of the great galleries
07:16of the dealer collectors in Paris
07:18including the Paul Rosenberg gallery
07:21at 21 Rue La Boise
07:22Rosenberg was a legendary dealer
07:26on the Paris art scene
07:27who represented three of the city's masters
07:30Henri Matisse
07:32Georges Brock
07:33and Pablo Picasso
07:35doesn't look like much now
07:41but all of the wood paneling
07:42and the trim
07:43is the original paneling
07:45that was here in 1940
07:46when the Nazis came
07:48and emptied this gallery
07:49in the months before the invasion
07:52Rosenberg moved much of his collection
07:54to England
07:54and the United States
07:56but he was unable
07:58to remove everything
07:59before the German army
08:00entered Paris
08:01and dozens of masterpieces
08:03were stolen
08:04five by Degas
08:08one by Cezanne
08:10but 38 by Picasso
08:11nine by Matisse
08:13overall it's 111 different paintings
08:16or drawings
08:17now in the world of art today
08:19some of these paintings
08:20are worth 20, 30 million dollars
08:23but let's just figure
08:24that each work of art
08:25here is worth 5 million dollars
08:275 million dollars
08:28times 111 different works of art
08:31you get to 550 million dollars
08:34or let's call it a half billion dollars
08:36the value is just staggering
08:3870 years later
08:41Robert is on a mission
08:43to find out what happened
08:45to the missing masterpieces

08:52at the National Archives
08:54home to a collection of albums
08:57captured by the American army
08:59at the end of the war
09:00known as the ERR albums
09:03they include photographs
09:05and information
09:06about looted artworks
09:07the albums were prepared
09:10specifically for Hitler
09:11the first given to him
09:13on his birthday
09:13today they're never put
09:16on public display
09:17but Robert has special access
09:19it's amazing
09:22looking at this
09:23incredible part of history
09:24these are the
09:25best of looted art
09:27and they wanted Hitler to see
09:28look what we got for you
09:29and he could choose
09:30what he wanted
09:31right
09:31what I find extraordinary
09:33is that these are
09:33absolutely gorgeous items
09:36if you look
09:37the calligraphy
09:38is beautiful
09:39the pictures
09:40are stunning
09:41it wasn't just
09:42documenting it
09:43they were proud of it
09:45these albums
09:47document the theft
09:48exactly what they took
09:50and who they took it from
09:51Robert wants to know

10:37head of the Luftwaffe
10:38the German Air Force

10:43his position
10:45brought him
10:46enormous wealth
10:47and a growing
10:48art collection
10:49when the Nazis
10:52captured Paris
10:53Goering was
10:54at the front
10:54of the line
10:55to lay his greedy
10:56hands on new plunder
10:57but owning a Van Gogh
11:01was a risky move
11:02this is exactly
11:03the kind of
11:04general work of art
11:05that Hitler
11:06wanted removed
11:07from Germany
11:07to keep from
11:08spoiling the minds
11:10of the people there
11:11Hitler despised
11:13post-impressionist
11:15and modern art
11:16he declared it
11:17un-German
11:18the result of
11:19growing Jewish
11:20and communist
11:21influence in Europe
11:22Hitler said
11:24about Van Gogh
11:25anyone that
11:26paints a sky
11:27green
11:28and the meadow blue
11:29is defective
11:30Hitler banned
11:32so-called
11:33degenerate art
11:34in 1937
11:35two years later
11:37more than
11:384,000 works
11:39were burned
11:39in Berlin
11:40and thousands
11:42more
11:43would be quietly
11:44claimed
11:44in the years
11:45to come
11:45by high-ranking
11:46Nazis
11:47including
11:48Hermann Goering
11:48the question
11:50now
11:50why was

11:52collecting
11:52forbidden art
11:53and could
11:55the answer
11:55lead Robert

13:22had started
13:23they will
13:25take all
13:25the stuff
13:26left by
13:27the Jews
13:27who were
13:28deported
13:28or the Jews
13:29escaping
13:30deportation
13:31the final
13:33solution
13:34was the
13:34Nazi plan
13:35to exterminate
13:36the Jewish
13:36people
13:37across Paris
13:39thousands
13:39of Jewish
13:40homes
13:40were left
13:41wide open
13:41to the Nazis
13:42who turned
13:43looting them
13:44into an
13:45industry
13:45truckloads
13:47of art
13:48furniture
13:49valuables
13:50and even
13:50housewares
13:51were seized
13:52how many
13:54apartments
13:54and houses
13:55are we talking
13:56about
13:56almost 40,000
13:58apartments
13:58in Paris
13:59and they just
13:59cleared them
14:00all out
14:00they cleared
14:01them out
14:01originally
14:04the Nazis
14:05planned to
14:05give these
14:06possessions
14:06to German
14:07settlers
14:07and conquered
14:08territories
14:09but when the
14:11tide of war
14:12turned
14:12and the Allies
14:13began bombing
14:14German cities
14:15the plunder
14:17from Paris
14:18had a new
14:19function
14:19after the
14:24bombing
14:24it was also
14:25a way
14:25to compensate
14:25people
14:26in German
14:27cities
14:28with new
14:29things
14:29to settle
14:30their
14:30home
14:32I'm a German
14:32family
14:33I live in
14:33Hamburg
14:34and my house
14:34has been
14:35blown up
14:35and I haven't
14:36got any
14:36furniture
14:36well that's
14:37not a problem
14:38because we've
14:38got some
14:38furniture
14:38coming from
14:39France
14:39exactly
14:40once sorted
14:43the looted
14:44goods were
14:45crated up
14:46for shipment
14:46to Germany
14:47this looks
14:48like something
14:48out of
14:49Raiders of the
14:49Lost Ark
14:50doesn't it
14:50I mean
14:50these huge
14:51stacks of
14:51crates
14:52it's sorted
14:53by
14:54wood
14:54so now
14:55these crates
14:56are kitchen
14:56stone seals
14:57that's amazing
14:58and look at
15:00these so toys
15:01I mean
15:01it's
15:02heartbreaking
15:03isn't it
15:04to see this
15:04but
15:05it does underline
15:06the fact that
15:06the Germans
15:07are taking
15:07absolutely
15:08everything
15:09from these
15:10properties
15:10the apartments
15:11were empty
15:12but I mean
15:13empty
15:13empty
15:14empty
15:14empty
15:14I've got a report
15:18here on
15:18furniture
15:19and household
15:20goods
15:20looted
15:21from Jewish
15:21properties
15:22just up to
15:23the end
15:23of 1943
15:24and I've got to say
15:25the figures
15:25are staggering
15:26they managed to
15:28steal
15:28the best part
15:29of a million
15:30cubic meters
15:31worth
15:32of furniture
15:33and household
15:34goods
15:34and then
15:35this was
15:36shipped out
15:36on nearly
15:3723,500
15:38wagons
15:40which equated
15:41to 589
15:43freight trains
15:44so that's
15:44well over
15:45more than
15:46one a day
15:46disappearing
15:47out of Paris
15:48stuffed full
15:49of stolen
15:50furniture
15:51the next stop
15:52was Germany
15:53all looted
15:57items were
15:57meticulously
15:58recorded
15:59by the Nazis
16:00among the
16:02thousands
16:02of Jewish
16:03households
16:03victimized
16:04by Nazi
16:04looting
16:05was that
16:06of Jean-Pierre

16:07a prominent
16:08local diamond
16:09merchant
16:09investigative

17:07consequences
17:08at the

17:09the Nazis
17:09so how did
17:14your family

17:17they went
17:18through Spain
17:18and they
17:19got out
17:20presumably
17:20traveling light
17:21yeah
17:21so a lot
17:22of stuff
17:22gets left
17:23behind
17:23yes
17:24in the rush
17:27to escape
17:28the family
17:29was forced
17:29to abandon
17:30the paintings
17:31antique furniture
17:32and handmade
17:34carpets
17:34and Hahn
17:36was also
17:36compelled
17:37to leave
17:37behind
17:38the lifeblood
17:38of the
17:39family business
17:40what about
17:42the diamonds
17:42he's a diamond
