U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to confirm direct tariff negotiations with China, suggesting that Beijing faces severe economic fallout if current trade barriers persist. Speaking to reporters, Bessent cited potential Chinese job losses in the millions and argued that the U.S. trade deficit puts pressure on China to act. While avoiding specifics on communications, he hinted at the unsustainable nature of China’s tariff stance. Beijing denies ongoing talks. The standoff continues, clouded by diplomatic silence and sharp warnings of economic instability from Washington.

00:00That, you know, over time we will see that the Chinese tariffs are unsustainable for China.
00:07I've seen some very large numbers over the past few days to show if these numbers stay on,
00:14Chinese could lose 10 million jobs very quickly, and even if there is a drop in the tariffs.
00:20Thank you so much, Caroline. Thank you, Mr. Secretary.
00:23The Chinese continue to say that the U.S. and Chinese are not engaged in any consultation or negotiation on tariffs.
00:31You recently said you've talked to your counterpart, but more about, quote, traditional things like financial stability.
00:37So can you clarify, is the administration talking to Beijing specifically about tariffs or not?
00:43Well, we're not going to talk about who's talking to whom,
00:45but I think that, you know, over time we will see that the Chinese tariffs are unsustainable for China.
00:53I've seen some very large numbers over the past few days to show if these numbers stay on,
01:01Chinese could lose 10 million jobs very quickly,
01:04and even if there is a drop in the tariffs, that they could lose 5 million jobs.
01:09So remember that we are the deficit country.
01:14They sell almost five times more goods to us than we sell to them.
01:18So the onus will be on them to take off these tariffs.
01:24They're unsustainable for them.
01:26And they are saying you guys are not talking about it.
01:29So is that true?
01:31They have a different form of government.
01:33They're playing to a different audience.
01:35So I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty, again, of who's talking to whom.
01:42But, as I said, I believe for the Chinese, these tariffs are unsustainable.
01:48And very quickly, two days ago, you said you didn't know if President Trump had spoken to Xi Jinping.
01:53Do you know now?
01:54Again, I would say Caroline and I have a lot of jobs around the White House running the switchboard in one of them.
