Transcript
00:00You guys, I just need two minutes, okay? I'm gonna step outside for two minutes.
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo. And today, we're counting down our picks for the most gut-wrenching,
00:13tear-inducing moments we saw on television between 2010 and 2019. Be warned, a spoiler
00:20alert is in effect. Grow up, Goldie. You know what? I'm officially done trying with you.
00:25Then we have something in common. Now get out of my building. Gladly.
00:35Number 10. Schneider Battles Substance Use Disorder, One Day at a Time.
00:40Oh, I almost forgot. I brought you something. Oh, that's so thoughtful of you, sir, but I'm
00:48sober now. Remember? But this is Don Julio Real. He's got his own house.
00:55Schneider is a beloved character on this reboot, and his relationship with his tenants,
01:00specifically Penelope and her family, is endearing. Throughout the series, it's known that he is
01:05recovering from alcohol and substance use disorders. And in season three, his struggles re-emerge when
01:12his father brings him a bottle of alcohol. While we don't see him drink, we later learn that he has
01:17relapsed. I thought you were just trying to get through this. Now you're selling the building?
01:22What happened? I know. But father and I got to talking, and he said a lot of things that made
01:27sense. And then he said, this is something that we could work on together. It's a tough moment that
01:32feels all too real for anyone who has struggled with substance use disorder or anyone who has loved
01:37someone who has. Our hearts break for him, but seeing Penelope support him with compassion and love
01:43while staying realistic about his situation, is a great moment.
01:47Pen, can you take a picture of me so I can Photoshop myself into the puzzle?
01:55Number nine, Marshall's dad dies. How I Met Your Mother.
01:59While How I Met Your Mother is known for its funny and heartfelt moments,
02:02it had its fair share of tragic ones too. One that comes to mind is when Robin learned she
02:08couldn't have children, and Ted cheered her up without even knowing why.
02:12Yes, it is. Look, you don't want to tell me what's wrong? Fine. I don't need to know.
02:20You can never stop me from trying to cheer you up. It's a fact of life.
02:25But it was the death of Marshall's father that left us in tears. In the episode in which his father
02:30passes, Marshall's parents visit him and Lily unknowingly for the last time.
02:35Oh, Marshall. We don't care about that one bit. And if you guys want kids, there are other ways.
02:44Adoption? Maybe you have a good friend who could loan you some sperm?
02:48When Marshall tries to call his father after he's returned to Minnesota,
02:52Lily interrupts by informing him his father had a heart attack and has passed.
02:56His reaction is so genuine that we can't help but weep right alongside him.
03:01Something's happened. Um, your father, he had a heart attack. He didn't make it.
03:10Number eight. Rebecca hits a low point. Crazy ex-girlfriend.
03:14Paula, did you hear what he said? I have a new diagnosis. A new one.
03:21Rebecca's story showed us that all of the little things in life can add up quickly.
03:25And in this case, push someone to their breaking point. In season three,
03:29we see her impulsive and somewhat erratic behavior escalate. And she plans to end her own life.
03:35On a plane, she writes a note about ending her life that accidentally gets thrown out.
03:40And she also overdoses on anti-anxiety medication.
03:44This is gonna sound a little crazy, but, um, I need to get off the plane.
03:48I bought a ticket to go to LA when I was in New York. But I'm just remembering now that everyone in LA
03:53either hates me and or thinks I'm crazy. So New York isn't my home, but LA isn't either.
03:59In the midst of this, she's also dealing with parental issues. As her mom and dad are both dismissive of
04:05her, which makes her mental state even worse. We do see Rebecca recover and find answers about her
04:10mental health, but it's so difficult to watch her battle through these moments.
04:15Everything okay?
04:17I need help.
04:24Number seven, Mac comes out. It's always sunny in Philadelphia.
04:29Throughout much of the series, Mac's sexuality is strongly hinted at,
04:33as he seems to be attracted to men, but goes above and beyond to appear otherwise.
04:40Well, I'm gay.
04:44Yeah.
04:44Oh, shit.
04:45Oh, you guys knew this right?
04:47That you were gay?
04:48From the day we met.
04:49Yeah.
04:50Really? What's going on? Did you just get tossed in here? Like, why are you in here?
04:54Oh, no, I just walked in on my own.
04:55What?
04:56While these moments are always done with humor,
04:58the episode in which Mac comes out to his father is no laughing matter. Mac fears his father won't
05:04accept him, especially considering their family's religious background.
05:08So you're saying that if I dance on the float, that maybe I'll find my pride?
05:12No, don't forget the float. That's just doing it for the wrong reasons.
05:18You gotta do something else.
05:20After his fears come true, Mac performs a surprisingly beautiful and moving interpretive
05:25dance about his struggle, and Frank declares that he finally understands what Mac has been going
05:30through. This moment proved that Mac has a great father figure in Frank, but watching his inner
05:35turmoil portrayed in this dance is gut-wrenching.
05:38Dad. I'm gay.
05:44Number 6. Sarah Lynn's Death. BoJack Horseman.
05:47Hey, you were a father figure who was sexually inappropriate to me, and I turned out perfect.
05:52Now can we please go home?
05:53Okay, good plan. I'll just go pee out the last 20 beers.
05:56While on the surface, this show looks like a fun animated series about a washed-up horse actor,
06:01it is surprisingly poignant and relevant. With Sarah Lynn and BoJack, we see the dark side of
06:06fame as they deal with substance use disorder and loss of purpose while they try to move out of the
06:12limelight. In season 3, the pair go on a dangerous bender instead of confronting their demons.
06:18Sarah Lynn ultimately dies from an overdose on a substance that BoJack supplied.
06:22And his realization of the consequences of his actions is truly haunting.
06:27I could never figure out what love meant. But right now, I don't need to figure out anything.
06:32I just feel it. I love you, Sarah Lynn. Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn?
06:39Her death echoes throughout the series, sticking in BoJack's mind as he tries to get his life on track.
06:45And it's all difficult to watch.
06:47Number 5. Terry Gets Racially Profiled
06:57Brooklyn Nine-Nine
06:59Brooklyn Nine-Nine is no stranger to dealing with serious topics,
07:03as we saw when Rosa struggled to come out to her family, who were not accepting of her sexuality.
07:08Jake and Emmy are engaged.
07:15That's okay.
07:16What? You understand. Love is complicated.
07:18However, an even stronger moment that stood out to us was when Terry was racially profiled.
07:24While walking around his own neighborhood, he's stopped by a cop who treats him unfairly.
07:29And the cop only feels remorse after learning that Terry is a cop, not because of his racist actions.
07:35Parents of the year speaking, Terry baby, talk to me.
07:38Where the hell is Moo Moo?
07:40Oh no. I think Terry has a child named Moo Moo and we forgot to pick her up.
07:43It's not a baby, Jake. It's Cagney's blankie. She calls it that because it has a little cow head.
07:48She said she had it in a minivan. Where is it now?
07:50This leads to difficult but important conversations between Terry, Captain Holt, Jake, Amy, and Terry's daughters.
07:58What's going on, buddy?
07:59Oh, hey, don't move.
08:01Oh, I was just...
08:02Step back. Keep your hands where I can see him.
08:05Drop that.
08:07This tough topic was handled well by this sitcom, and they don't shy away from showing the problems that exist in the world of policing.
08:14Number 4. Jack Dies. This Is Us.
08:24Rebecca? I need you to wake up.
08:26The house is on fire. Get dressed. Put some shoes on.
08:29On Super Bowl Sunday, things took a turn for the worst when the Pearson house went up in flames.
08:34It initially looks like Jack is not going to emerge from the house, but he does with the family dog in tow.
08:40And though we're relieved, nothing could have prepared us for the hospital scene.
08:44While being treated for his minor injuries, Jack goes into cardiac arrest from smoke inhalation and passes away.
08:51Your husband went into cardiac arrest.
08:53It was catastrophic, and I am afraid we've lost him.
09:01Seeing Rebecca in disbelief and then absolute devastation is one of the saddest moments we've ever seen on any TV show.
09:16This Is Us has a knack for breaking our hearts and then putting them back together again.
09:20But in this episode, they forget to do the latter.
09:23Number 3. The Talent Show. Dairy Girls.
09:37It's the heart afraid of breaking
09:43That never learns to dance
09:51Wait, James isn't even speaking to me.
09:53This moment showed us that funny, horrific, and happy moments can exist simultaneously.
09:59During the season 1 finale of Dairy Girls, we see funny moments like Jenny singing at the school talent show.
10:05We also see happy moments like Orla and Claire's feud coming to an end,
10:10and the girls all reconciling and having fun.
10:12But while this is all going on, we see a truly horrific moment unfolding as well.
10:19In what is already being described as one of the worst atrocities of the Northern Irish conflict,
10:24at least 12 people are thought to be dead, and many more wounded.
10:28During the talent show, the girls' parents watch the news and learn about a bombing that occurred in their country.
10:34And we see the juxtaposition of the parents' and children's lives in this bittersweet moment.
10:40This is penance.
10:41I'm not doing it again. I mean it this time.
10:45Up next, we have Orla McCool.
10:49Number 2. Poussey dies. Orange is the new black.
10:53We loved the eclectic crew of inmates in this series, but we've always had a soft spot for Poussey.
11:09Her kindness and relatability shine through in the series,
11:12as she's barely a criminal and instead a tragic character who had struggles in her upbringing,
11:17but found a home at Litchfield.
11:19So we could not have been more devastated when she is unexpectedly killed at the end of Season 4.
11:25Things have been pretty lax around here, if you ask me.
11:28So lax, in fact, that one of my men was murdered on prison property by one of you.
11:34When the inmates start to protest the unfair treatment they'd been receiving,
11:39one of the newer guards restrains Poussey and accidentally suffocates her.
11:43This moment is the catalyst for the escalating prison riot that covers almost the entire fifth season,
11:49and is arguably the most tragic scene in the series.
11:52Stop and call a medic.
11:53Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
12:06Chidi moves on.
12:08The good place.
12:09Eleanor comes to terms with him leaving with the help of a wave metaphor.
12:13I was never good at being sad.
12:15Partly because my mom straight up told me not to be.
12:19But this is sad, man.
12:22The Hot Priest Chooses God.
12:24Fleabag.
12:25Watching the Hot Priest and Fleabag part ways is devastating.
12:30Ugh.
12:32They always lie.
12:33It'll magically come in a minute.
12:37Yeah.
12:40They're really into each other, those two.
12:41It's nice.
12:41I already pulled it off.
12:43Hodor's Death.
12:44Game of Thrones.
12:45Learning the true meaning of his name is absolutely gut-wrenching.
13:01The Nobel Prize Party.
13:04Young Sheldon.
13:05Seeing Sheldon listening to the radio alone brings tears to our eyes.
13:13How's it going, baby?
13:14I don't think anyone's showing up.
13:18Not even Tam.
13:19I'm here.
13:21Yeah, but you're my mom.
13:23You live on the premises.
13:24Opie dies.
13:25Sons of Anarchy.
13:27The way he dies is hard to watch, and his sacrifice is so noble.
13:31Boy, he's okay?
13:34Yeah.
13:35You, uh, find out what's going on?
13:39Pope wants one of us dead.

13:55Number one.
13:58Finn dies.
13:59Glee.
14:01I marked these boxes so it'd be easier to separate things.
14:04Thanks, honey.
14:06You don't have to do this now.
14:07They can wait.
14:08There's no timetable.
14:09No.
14:10We should do it now.
14:11The hardest deaths on screen are ones that reflect deaths that occurred in real life.
14:16And Finn's death on Glee is maybe the most harrowing example of that.
14:20After Cory Monteith's death, fans were saddened to learn of his struggles with substance use
14:26disorder that ultimately claimed his life.
14:28I don't think you would have done all those things if you didn't think you were decent too.
14:35Can you leave, please?
14:36On the show, his cause of death is never revealed, and we see all of the characters
14:45process his death in the most realistic way possible, as they were clearly grieving in
14:49real life.
14:50In hindsight, watching Santana deal with her emotions regarding his death and sing If I
14:56Die Young is so unbelievably sad.
14:58If I die young, bury me in satin, lay me down on a bed of roses.
15:06But watching Rachel sing about her on-screen and real-life partner's passing will always
15:11leave us sobbing.
15:13I could offer you a warm embrace to make you feel my love.
15:23Which moment left your heart in pieces?
15:26Let us know in the comments.
15:27What, man?
15:28I am happy for him, but I do still hate him.
15:30Oh, yeah.
15:31It's not a gay or straight thing, is it?
15:33No, it's a back thing.
15:34Yeah, it's a back thing.
15:35Do you agree with our picks?
