00:00Is it time for an African Pope?
00:02The last one was over a thousand years ago.
00:06Pope Francis was the first modern Pope from the global south.
00:10It reflected that the church was growing fast outside Europe.
00:14Most of the growth is now happening in Africa
00:17and many people expect this to reflect at the top.
00:21Let's look at three potential candidates.
00:24First is Cardinal Peter Tuxin from Ghana.
00:27He has led several Vatican offices including the church body
00:33that promotes social justice, human rights and world peace.
00:37Supporters say he could be a natural successor to Francis' vision
00:42with a focus on helping the poor and environmental issues.
00:47Second is Cardinal Robert Serra from Guinea.
00:50He also believes in the role of the church in elevating the poor
00:54but he clashed with Francis several times
00:58taking a more conservative stance on celibacy and homosexuality.
01:04Supporters of Cardinal Serra are saying he would be the anti-woke Pope.
01:08Third on our list is Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo
01:12from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
01:15He's the Archbishop of Kinshasa.
01:17Like Serra, Tuxin and Francis, he speaks up for the poor.
01:21A lot of young African Catholics really respect him
01:25for sticking to traditional church beliefs.
01:28For example, he did not agree with Francis on blessing gay couples.
01:33Africa's growing Catholic population is significant
01:36but electing a Pope is not all about those numbers.
01:40135 cardinals vote for the new Pope
01:43and only 18 of them are African.
01:47The winner will need to secure two-thirds of the votes to be elected.
01:50If the new Pope is from the continent,
01:54he will be the first since Pope Galatius from Northern Africa.
