In a fiery White House press briefing following ICE raids in Colorado and Florida, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan made headlines with a chilling immigration message: “Having a U.S. citizen child does NOT make you immune from the law.” Homan defended the deportations of parents, stating they “chose” that outcome, even if it meant their American-born children would be sent away too.

00:00There were three U.S. citizen children who were removed with their mothers who
00:04were in the United States. What we did is remove children with their mothers who
00:08requested the children depart with them. This was a parental decision, parental
00:11one, parenting 101. The mothers made that choice. Are you concerned that due
00:16process, at least for the U.S. citizen children, is being flouted and at the
00:20speed of which... They weren't deported, we don't deport U.S. citizens. The parents
00:24made that decision, not the United States government. But I don't hear any
00:28questions about... This is a question for Mr. Homan. Late last week, there were three
00:33U.S. citizen children who were removed with their mothers who were in the
00:37United States illegally. There have been a federal judge in Louisiana who was
00:41appointed by President Trump, said that he was concerned that there was, quote, no
00:45meaningful process. Are you concerned that due process, at least for the U.S.
00:50citizen children, is being flouted and at the speed at which the enforcement is
00:56being done could lead to errors, as was the case in the Kilmer-Abrego-Garcia case? And
01:01then also, if you could give an update on the deportation numbers under this
01:04administration and whether you're pleased with them.
01:06First of all, I don't accept the term error in Abrego-Garcia. There was an
01:12oversight. There was a withholding order. But things have changed. The facts around the
01:17withholding order has changed. Now we're terrorists. We're seeing withholding order set
01:20aside. And the gang he was fearing from being removed to El Salvador no longer exists. So
01:24the facts around that case are totally different. I'll let the lawyers litigate
01:27that. But as far as the U.S. three U.S. kids, I'd say from day one that if you enter this
01:33country legally, it's a crime. If you remain in this country legally and you ignore a
01:37judge's order about deporting, if you choose to have a U.S. citizen child knowing you're
01:43in this country legally, you put yourself in that position. You put your family in that
01:47position. What we did is remove children with their mothers who requested the children depart
01:52with them. This was a parental decision. Parenting 101. The mothers made that choice.
01:58And I tell you what, if we didn't do it, the story today would be the Trump administration
02:02separating families again. No, we're keeping families together. So when a parent says, I
02:07want my two-year-old baby to go with me, we made that happen. They weren't deported. We
02:12don't deport U.S. citizens. The parents made that decision, not the United States
02:16government. But I don't hear any questions about, Lake and Riley had a mother. She's
02:21never going to see her child again. Rachel Morin, she had five children. You know, those
02:28children are never going to see their mom again. This administration is doing the
02:31right thing. Every public safety threat we arrest from this country and move them.
02:35This country is much safer. So parents will make a decision what happens to their
02:38child. Having a U.S. citizen child does not make you immune from our laws. If that's the message
02:44we send the entire world, enter the country legally, it's a crime, don't worry about it.
02:49Get order removed by an immigration judge, don't worry about it. No one's looking for
02:53you. And have a U.S. citizen child, and you're immune from our laws, you're never going to
02:58fix the border. People will keep putting themselves in harm's way. More women will die. More children
03:03will die crossing this border. We've got to secure a border by enforcing our laws. We're
03:06not making this up. We're enforcing laws under statute, enacted by Congress, and it's the right
03:10thing to do. Can you give an update on the deportation numbers under this administration?
03:14What are you asking for? We just provided the numbers.
03:16The number of deportations that have occurred under this administration and whether you're
03:19pleased with that.
03:23Last number I just got was 139,000 deportations. Am I happy with that? The numbers are good.
03:30Especially if you look at the ICE numbers. The ICE arrest removals are far beyond
03:34a Biden. But I read the media. Oh, ICE, the deportations are behind the Biden administration.
03:39Well, why? Because they counted border removals. We don't have 10.5 million people crossing the
03:44border. We don't have border removals. So Joe Biden could have deported 5% of his encounters,
03:51and the numbers will still be higher than us on the border removals, because we have a secure
03:55border. The most secure border in the history of this nation. Compare apples to apples, ICE,
04:00arrests, and deportations are far more than Joe Biden.
04:05That's right.
