00:00so good to be with you and thanks for tuning into the show today let's get started and talk a little
00:04bit about the series between the Pacers and Bucs that has taken a very definitive turn
00:09right now the Indiana Pacers take a three to one series lead with a 26 point win over the Milwaukee
00:15Bucs and there is a chance that's not the worst news Damian Lillard suffered a left Achilles tear
00:23that is the fear currently right now not yet confirmed considering the fact that he missed a
00:28month with blood clot diagnosis and he's been out so right now it's uh yeah Giannis and company for
00:34Milwaukee they're now up against it they have to win one game to stay alive not a lot of hope that
00:40they can get it done considering Tyrese Halliburton's been fantastic he had 17 points and 15 assists in
00:46the game Rick Carlisle head coach of the Pacers said they did all the little things right I thought I
00:52thought our attention to detail was was better in this game than the last um our guys focused and
00:58concentrated um there were difficult stretches but we uh we stayed with our brand of basketball
01:08and uh did some very good things and so you know we've got to get home and get rested
01:15um the next game is 6 p.m on Tuesday it's a quick turnaround and we're going to need to be ready
01:25and we're going to need our fans um to have game bridge you know louder than it's ever been
01:31I've seen injuries like deflating but tonight that one hurt um thought our guys tried but it was tough
01:40you know all of them are in there at halftime you know in the training room you know really talk to
01:47talk to a team you know after that so my job over the next you know 40 hours or whatever we have
01:54is to get us upright again um try to win one game in Indiana and get it back here um but my brain right
02:04now is right where the same place that the players are and that's thinking about Dane that's just a human
02:09part of this job that's really no fun uh it really isn't naturally if Lillard does have a torn Achilles
02:17that would cost him the remainder of the playoffs and obviously well into next year as well probably
02:23get an update today on that all right Boston Celtics Orlando Magic that series also one game away from
02:29being complete give the Magic credit they've hung tight with Boston throughout the series but Jason Tatum
02:34now healthy again 37 points and 14 rebounds it was just a two-point game in the fourth quarter
02:40but the Magic were just unable to stay in it and close it out and so at this point right now it looks
02:47like Boston who is the heavy favorite to win the series will need one more game and then they will
02:52move on to the next round in the NBA playoffs Joe Missoula the head coach of the Celtics gives all the
02:58credit to the Magic for staying in the game with them yeah I mean Orlando's I mean a great team
03:04I mean they're well coached uh they they have a little bit of everything uh they got versatility
03:09defensively they got two guys that can uh you know score three levels they got shooting uh they
03:14got a ton of versatility so um and then yeah I mean the game plan execution is very simple you have
03:21to win the margins you got to win in the trenches and uh you know you have to compete at a high level
03:26and you got to play physical and uh you know our guys did that tonight throughout the game
03:30Jamal you talk about defending without fouling and obviously there were some free throws at the
03:34end of that game but they shot 30 or 32 how would you describe the way your team defended tonight and
03:39the amount of free throws I mean how many free throws do you think came down on the backstretch
03:44after like we had to foul what do you think it was about about 26 total maybe it's too many um
03:52follow a three-point shooter again we were attacking the basket the exact same way now we've got to knock
03:57them down when we get there and that's a big portion of it we had to understand that the call
04:01was gonna the whistle was gonna head in their direction after you know what's been said so we
04:06have to continue to just be smart there hold our ground get positioning earlier and make sure we show
04:12our hands meanwhile the biggest upset in the first round of the NBA playoffs could be this one
04:18Minnesota Timberwolves win again against the Los Angeles Lakers they're now up 3-1 in the series
04:22they win by three some lines had three some three and a half it was really close game but Anthony
04:27Edwards went bananas in the fourth quarter 43 points five for ten from three-point range LeBron
04:34James was held scoreless in the fourth so it is indeed the Timberwolves that are one game away
04:39of course they will have to close this out in Los Angeles if they want to get the job done that's
04:45coming up meanwhile Anthony Edwards talked about this incredible fourth quarter that the Timberwolves had to
04:51come all the way back and win going to the fourth um anytime I get open shoot it yeah how did did you
05:00feel something different like did you feel like this game was there to take yeah for sure I mean
05:04I feel like we took their best punches throughout the game and to start the third and then to end the
05:08third so and I felt like it was gassed going down the stretch so just trying to you know keep my foot on
05:14the pedal and keep going um obviously you don't think about winning three you think about just getting the
05:18next one you know that's the only thing that matters because if not obviously the offseason
05:22began so you know it's all about uh Wednesday I believe you know so that's what that's what's
05:28important we certainly played well enough to win and we gave the effort to win and you know the
05:35not a planned thing to play five guys an entire second half we asked him at the beginning of the
05:43fourth quarter told them we had two extra timeouts you know if you need a sub let us know um those
05:49guys gave gave a lot the Los Angeles Lakers are reeling and same could be said of the Detroit
05:55Pistons although they played really tight with the New York Knicks as well they need to win their next
06:00game too Knicks are now up 3-1 in the series they beat the Pistons by 194 to 93 Jalen Brunson had 32 points
06:07at 11 assists Brunson's putting together a great playoffs again so is Carl Anthony Towns yesterday
06:12Brunson led all players with 53 fourth quarter points this postseason Tom Thibodeau knows that
06:19there's still one game away from winning but last night was a good start like playoff wins are tough
06:25it's hard to get them uh we didn't have much going our way to start the fourth and dug down and found a
06:31way to win in the end a lot of tough plays guys stepping up you know cat hitting the big shots
06:38Jalen big shots yeah McHale's defense OG's defense Josh's hustle plays the rebounds uh we needed everybody
06:46and just finding a way to win uh and that's the bottom line I mean again we are you know we are
06:54learning our way through you know every challenge that's in front of us and I think our guys have done
06:59a great job of learning from one moment to the next um you know obviously there's some things
07:04where I can help our guys more down the stretch and I can be better uh and I will be um but just
07:10understanding where our shots are coming from you know who's getting those shots the spacing on the
07:14floor and those types of things but um you know again it's my responsibility to help these guys
07:18because they want to learn and they want to get better and that's what I'm here for
07:22on Saturday the Oklahoma City Thunder closed out the Memphis Grizzlies with a sweep 117 to 115 OKC will
07:29wait their next opponent the Cleveland Cavaliers can close out their series tonight they're up 3-0
07:34and if they beat the Heat in Miami they move on to the next round meanwhile Nuggets and Clippers
07:38still a long way to go Aaron Gordon had a buzzer beater on Saturday and it's 2-2 tied up between
07:44the Denver Nuggets and LA Clippers and also Golden State and Houston as back and forth Steph had 36 points
07:50and Golden State beat Houston 90 uh 104 to 93 all right let's get to some hockey Leon Dreisaitl he scored
07:56in overtime the Oilers beat the Kings 4-3 in game four series tied to two Capitals beat the
08:01Canadians 5-2 they take a 3-1 series lead Hurricanes take control of their series beating
08:05the Devils 5-2 they're also up 3-1 and meanwhile the Blues and Jets are probably headed toward a
08:10seven game series they win 5-1 been a very competitive series in the National Hockey League
08:16another Dodgers pitcher injured yes this time Tyler Glass now with a shoulder injury no MRI planned
08:22just yet the Yankees sweep a doubleheader the Blue Jays yesterday and also the Giants get a
08:26Little League home run I don't know if you saw this Helio Ramos hit one three to two walk-off win
08:31against the Texas Rangers also Andrew Novak Ben Griffin win the Zurich Classic PGA Championship by
08:38the way folks coming up in two weeks all right welcome back to Newswire we got Sam Aquila leading
08:43us off here on this Monday from Legal Sports Report we'll dive into the very latest on prize
08:47picks new entry to a couple of baseball locations let's get right into it Sam great to have you back
08:53here on Newswire and let's get started with the NCAA of course lots of discussion on moving forward
08:58with betting and props and just sort of how to combat some different issues I would say in college
09:04sports in general and now the NCAA is going to share data with some betting operators and I know the
09:10partnership doesn't really surround it necessarily but I think in the long term it's important to make
09:15sure that everybody knows what's going on in the league with that with betting data and this sort
09:19of legal partner up yeah definitely this uh this news about the NCAA expanding their partnership with
09:26Genius Sports dropped on Friday and what it does is they've already had a partnership with this uh
09:31data sports data company that shares a lot of data with sports books but now they're going to
09:36share their official data this is everything that happens on the field with the players it even
09:41includes injury tracking so it's all anytime you talk about the deep analytics and all the tracking
09:46that scouts and teams do it's all this official data um that now the sports books will have access to as
09:52well as well as the NCAA's logos uh and their marks so anybody who's partnered with Genius Sports which
09:58many sports books are will have access to all that now because Genius Sports is the exclusive uh distributor
10:04of NCAA data um and it's going to happen through 2032 so that'll cover all uh postseason championships
10:11men's and women's March Madness it actually won't include the college football playoff because you know
10:16of course in the NCAA there's the different entities and the NCAA actually doesn't own or operate the
10:22college football playoff it's separate and um you know the leagues and the conferences might change
10:26even more by next year and we're talking about this again um but it's part of these broader measures
10:32to just ensure responsibility and integrity across everything you know we've talked about a bunch
10:37of scandals popping up across college sports we've talked about harassment um so what the sports books
10:43are going to have to do is they're going to have to share things like geolocation uh and device data
10:48if needed with the NCAA um which they already have been doing but it's kind of been at a basis of when
10:55it's being asked upon when there's an investigation then they'll share it but now this is going to make
10:59sure that the NCAA um has access to it at all times you would think that's going to kind of speed
11:04up these investigations that we've been talking about and um just make it easier to kind of track
11:09some of this um you know some of the stuff that's been going on that they'd like to stop um you know
11:14it also comes as the NCAA has been really trying to promote um anti-harassment um they've been trying
11:20to get states to ban player props which as we know um can be more easily manipulated than a lot of
11:26other bets um so the NCAA has been very vocal on that front as well um and it comes to genius is
11:32trying to expand their portfolio they just uh unrolled uh genius IQ which is this new AI driven
11:37platform um which is going to do more deeper integrations more real-time stats tracking they'll
11:44share that with the broadcast so I'm sure you'll hear about that kind of all throughout sports
11:48coverage as it changes not just with sports betting in general could allow the sports books to
11:52add some more features down the road um you know tied to things beyond just stats um you know whether
11:58or not how fast an athlete is moving during a game you know all of that is kind of down the road but it
12:02kind of opens the uh the floodgates to that thing eventually um so yeah it's a big it's a big move for
12:08the NCAA here sharing the data uh for the first time and we'll definitely hear more about it um you know
12:13as we get into the serious sports in the uh the fall yeah definitely so good partnership extension
12:18there now boy it has been tough for the sports books I'm crying Sam can you see this little tear
12:24for the sport here they lose during the NFL season and then March Madness comes like oh we're going to
12:30get a bunch of upsets we're going to get a lot of craziness didn't happen as well I mean over the
12:35last calendar year Sam I don't ever recall six or eight months of time in sports where the books lost
12:41but here we are yeah it's it's really been an unprecedented run these past six months they had
12:47terrible NFL usually that's their best sport and then as you said Craig March Madness came around
12:51and no uh no Cinderella's won there were no there were no major upsets um you know they got lucky
12:56enough that Duke had that that final collapse in the final four um I think almost half the money that
13:02was bet on the NCAA championship was on that but um that's not going to be included in um the current
13:08reporting period that comes up because the game happened about a week outside of that so what will be
13:13included in the Q1 results is a terrible March Madness uh one uh analyst bank is saying uh that
13:18they estimate FanDuel and DraftKings lost in 185 million dollars combined for March Madness so
13:24estimating not just that they didn't have a profitable March Madness but it was a huge loss
13:30for them as well so um you know it comes after a really rough NFL season DraftKings said it was the
13:36worst one ever the Super Bowl did help a little bit uh with player props and same game parlays
13:42um you know translating to a profitable day overall for the books but it still has not been a great
13:47overall last six months but now you have Q2 when you have the NBA playoffs are in form NHL playoffs
13:53and Major League Baseball really helps a lot just having so many more games on the slate without as
13:58much volatility on one major event like the final four where it's single game elimination everyone's
14:04betting on a favorite team that covers so historically Q2 accounts for about 21 percent of the annual
14:10handle uh that's delivered over the year but the highest parlay margins and the best uh hold
14:16percent is for the books typically so Q2 cannot be coming at a better time after these past six months
14:21for the sports books but still they'll be hoping that the favorites don't win in the NBA they'll be
14:25rooting against the Thunder rooting against the Lakers who are on the ropes right now um and the
14:29Golden Knights as well are a huge liability in the NHL playoffs but you know no quarter is totally
14:34risk-free so um they're definitely not um you know celebrating anytime soon uh the Kentucky Derby's
14:40coming up as well so um if they if they have a good quarter it'll be really important if they have a
14:45bad quarter uh which they're kind of set up not to do but it could happen uh it'll be really really
14:50interesting to see how that affects the stock market sentiment which is very much down right now
14:55even though you know it is a high volatile industry but you know when you have months and months
14:59of losses uh you know it's harder to to overlook that kind of stuff all right now let's head to
15:04California where sports betting still not legal and probably not going to be legal anytime soon so
15:09the only action I guess that's out there for people playing sports is uh prize picks you know these sort
15:14of different ways that you can play in the daily fantasy space and Sam a new partnership with a
15:20ballpark in the interim while they wait for sports betting to become legalized yeah California has been
15:26the largest daily fantasy sports market for a reason Craig like you mentioned they don't have
15:30sports betting but they do have these uh products that look very similar in some cases to sports betting
15:35on prize picks companies like underdog and sleeper uh which essentially they look like parlays and
15:40they're player prop focused uh but California hasn't taken any action against them so now
15:44prize picks is expanding their presence in the in the state they just added two partnerships with
15:50MLB teams in the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego San Diego Padres which will allow them to
15:55have more signage at their stadium sign up offers um you know throughout um on commercials for the
16:01team so interesting to see that they're ramping up their presence there and investing more in the
16:05marketing side of things uh while sports betting remains illegal and while we're still waiting on
16:10an opinion from the attorney general in the state who had been asked about two years ago now um to
16:16decide whether or not fantasy sports is indeed legal in the state it's one of those gray areas where the
16:21state just hasn't taken any enforcement against it uh the tribes in the state certainly say that they
16:26think it is sports betting and they want it to be um kind of taken down or taken action against um but
16:31meanwhile the you know the state has really done nothing and I think it's telling that prize picks
16:35here is investing more and more in the state while we wait for this opinion that at this point might
16:40come after sports betting eventually gets legalized we certainly know California has a lot more else on
16:45their plate right now than just deciding fantasy sports but for the industry it's a big big thing
16:50because California is the crown jewel of the market um so we'll see if price picks tries to expand the
16:55presence even more uh it comes as tribes and sports books are renegotiating an agreement to
17:02potentially get sports betting on the ballot in 2028 but again very far away very far from happening so
17:07in the meantime uh these fantasy sports companies like prize picks underdog and whoever else I'm sure
17:12they are happy um to have it kind of just be status quo and keep on investing uh in marketing to the
17:17state all right great stuff Sam as always enjoy uh your week will I see you back here this week or
17:23you're one and done with us this week I will be on Friday this week so I'll see you all right we'll
17:27catch you again you'll give us a Kentucky Derby pick on I will on Friday we'll pick a winner all
