00:00Off-duty lifeguards Mario, Reedy and Singlets have joined Luke for a mass rescue.
00:06I've gone out, just tried to assess as I'm paddling out who is the worst swimmer, who
00:13is, you know, who I can get first because they're all wanting help.
00:18Mid-afternoon and Luke is having no response from a group of kids swimming towards a rip.
00:24I was sitting down on the rip and I could see what was going to happen, trying to megaphone
00:28them across to keep going back onto the other side of the bank because they were just drifting
00:32into the massive rip.
00:33That group of swimmers in front of me here, guys, go across.
00:36You are in the rip, go across before you get dragged out.
00:42They didn't want to listen, they were kind of, you know, yahooing and just not paying attention.
00:48Next minute they were in the rip.
00:49We've still got two weeks of school holidays less so we're dealing with tourists and teenage
00:55kids that like to be painful and I think Louie's been down there trying to move them on for
00:59a while and he just had his hands full.
01:01These guys are swimming on a sandbank near Backpackers.
01:05Luke's tried to direct them back to the bank and they've swung exactly the opposite way and
01:11just swung straight into a howling rip at Backies.
01:14If the boys follow Luke's instructions, a rescue is avoidable.
01:19BD and Singlet's, both off duty, are instinctively drawn toward the escalating problem of six
01:25people in trouble.
01:26I'm just down here having a swim, also Singlet's day off, yeah.
01:30We like to hang it, well it's the beach, who doesn't love coming to the beach on their
01:32day off.
01:33So, unfortunately when you're a lifeguard, whether you're on duty or off duty, you're
01:36always working.
01:37I walk into the tower and like a Bondi does, it just erupts.
01:41Singlet's said to me, should we go and I went, I know.
01:49Another off duty lifeguard, Mario, who was on his lunch break, joins the chase.
01:55I've gone out and just tried to assess as I'm paddling out who is the worst swimmer, who
02:05is, you know, who I can get first because they're all wanting help.
02:10So I just kind of told them just to stay calm, just relax, someone's coming.
02:22The boys have left a girl on her own further out.
02:32Luke is anchored down by two of the boys hanging onto his board.
02:39Three more swimmers need rescuing.
02:40Reedy backs up.
02:41You're right, you're stuck, keep it up.
02:47David, be out, you're back, you're back, you're back.
02:59Three more swimmers need rescuing.
03:03Reedy backs up.
03:08Luke drags his three onto the sandbank.
03:11The others finally follow the instructions
03:14they were given earlier on the megaphone.
03:16Let's go, straight in.
03:18Singlets and Mario stand down.
03:22As soon as they're safe,
03:23some of the boys are emboldened with an attitude change
03:26Reedy does not appreciate.
03:29They're f***ing up.
03:35Even then, once we got the other ones in,
03:37they'd quickly forgotten how much, you know,
03:39panic and trouble they were in.
03:42At least one of the group recognises the seriousness of the situation.
03:46All of a sudden, like, a few couldn't touch the ground
03:48and then all the boys were going up front and I'm like,
03:50guys, help, look, I don't think I can get help, help.
03:52It was horrible, I thought I was going to die.
03:54Half of us got caught in it and then they needed to get rescued back.
03:57You could swim.
03:58I swam back but then we had to go back for the girl
04:00and they just left her.
04:01It was funny, Bart, you know.
04:03How was that funny?
04:04I didn't mean this little guy was just drowning.
04:06I saw the guys, we didn't see anything.
04:07All that was happening, he just waves over our head.
04:09Just help.
04:10That was no, Bart.
04:12You know, not everyone follows the rules and swims in the flags.
04:16It gets frustrating just when there's a lot of people down here
04:18and, you know, you don't want to devote your time
04:20to people who are wasting it.
04:22Bondi Beach, but not like the postcards.
04:29Central to Rhino.
04:32No matter rain, hail or shine,
04:35international visitors keep lifeguards busy.
04:38You just have a look at the northern side of the flags,
04:41right at the back of the street swimming.
04:43While most visitors find their way to the flags,
04:46others find their way to the deadliest parts of the beach.
04:50Hey, wait, so we got two heads just there on the ride.
04:54At that time, Backpackers was the most dangerous rep on the beach.
04:58Since they were in such a bad position,
05:00it was hard for Jake and I to leave them.
05:03We both made the call, look, we're going to have to go here
05:05and just go out there and just get them back to shore.
05:10Guys, straight in.
05:11They didn't really realise the danger they were in
05:13and kind of how far out they were.
05:16Many visitors don't understand the concept of a lifeguard.
05:20All they see is a person on a surfboard
05:24yelling instructions in a foreign language.
05:26Go back to shore.
05:28Back to shore.
05:30Go.
05:33Well, Harrison's just gone out to go get two guys
05:35who are desperately in need of rescuing,
05:38and they just rushed you.
05:39Swing, straight, go, swing, go.
05:43Harrison's job is convincing the unwitting swimmers,
05:46both tourists from China, that their luck has run out.
05:50Swing, swing, swing, swing.
05:52Too dangerous, thank you.
05:54They just brushed hearts.
05:55These two guys were like semi-draming.
05:57Yeah, Brett, they're not getting in, mate.
05:59There's no way.
06:01Yeah, mate, I'm on the mega.
06:02Harrison's out there, mate.
06:03If I need...
06:05He'll let me know.
06:06What?
06:07They're not getting in.
06:10Eventually, one of the men, Lou, faces up to the reality of his situation.
06:18One's grabbed him now.
06:19Lou's travelling companion reaches the sandbank himself,
06:22but neither man comprehends how different the outcome could have been if lifeguards didn't assist.
06:29Yeah, you can't swim.
06:31You're not a good swimmer.
06:33Don't swim down here.
06:34Yes, yes.
06:35Dangerous.
06:35Have fun.
06:36You'll drown.
06:36You'll die.
06:37You will die.
06:40Seriously.
06:40Seriously.
06:41In the end, the message is lost in translation.
06:44No, you don't know what to do.
06:47You're doing this.
06:48You're doing this.
06:49You're doing this.
06:50You're doing this.
06:51You're doing this.
06:52I don't know what to do.
06:53I don't know what to do.
06:54I don't know what to do.
06:56I don't know what to do.
06:57I don't know what to do.
06:58I don't know what to do.
07:01Hey, just a guy with the bodyboard and those flippers, mate.
07:03If you keep paddling north.
07:06Minutes later, Lou and his mate are back unannounced.
07:10You know, like, a lot of people come up to us for photo opportunities down here,
07:13and I saw a guy come up to me with a camera, and I thought,
07:17okay, yeah, quick photo.
07:18And I did the double look, and I'm like, oh, my God.
07:19It's the same guy I just rescued.
07:31On top of the rescue moments earlier, the men's happy snap has become a dangerous distraction.
07:37Right after that, we had to go down to the middle of the beach for guys that were in,
07:47you know, some serious trouble.
07:49Two teenagers and a very young boy are in a fight for their lives.
07:53Yeah, go. Oh, you want to go again?
07:55Yeah.
07:55Yeah.
07:56Hey, guys, everybody out.
07:57Everybody out.
07:59Out of the water.
08:00For the second time today, Harrison must prioritise who he should rescue first.
08:06But this time, the stakes are much higher.
08:09When you go for a rescue when there's more than one person involved, you always go for the person
08:14who's the most furthest out the back.
08:16Harrison's flying out to him right now.
08:18And by the time I got to him, it was in a really bad way.
08:21But a surfer managed to come over and just prompt him up to me.
08:24Harrison has followed protocol, but on this occasion, it may prove a mistake.
08:33I tried to give my patient back to the surfer so I can pedal back and get the other guy.
08:43The terrified teenager quickly becomes an anchor on Harrison's board.
08:48I got to the stage where I'm just seeing this guy going under and I'm trying to kick him.
08:57Harrison can't reach the other swimmers until he frees himself from the first man.
09:02I'm literally kicking him. I feel bad, but I'm thinking,
09:05as long as I can hold on to that surface board, I can get this other guy.
09:07Go!
09:12Oh, this guy's in trouble.
09:13Oh, .
09:15The teenager refuses to let Harrison break free.
09:26As Jake backs up, Harrison finally offloads the teenager onto a sandbank.
09:37The small boy, barely seven years old, has fought his way out of the rip by himself.
09:45The third swimmer is helped by yet another surfer.
09:58Jake's going to get there, but the guys, two surfers have pretty much saved these guys' lives.
10:04Without the surfers' help, the situation could have been tragic.
10:08Jake's patient was only moments from drowning.
10:23Jake got to the other guy. That's as close as you want to get.
10:25The two teenagers are students from Malaysia.
10:28The students aren't out of danger yet. Water on the lungs can still cause death.
10:46I'm going to give them some oxygen. It looks like they swallowed them with a
10:51bit of water. Try to help them out for a bit. See if he comes good. If not, we'll have to take him off the hospital.
10:58Lifeguards monitor the men's oxygen saturation levels before they are finally released.
11:05One simple rescue turned into three, and that was critical.
11:10If the surfer hadn't have got over to one of them, I think 100% he would have died.
11:17The unpredictability of the surf is what makes it such a unique thrill.
11:21The genuine risk makes it exciting, but sooner or later, someone pays the price.
11:31Someone's down on the ground, though. Where? Near the flags.
11:35The AC gave us a call and said that you can see some, it looks like they've collapsed.
11:40Responding to a report of a serious injury, head lifeguard Hoppo has come across from his office.
11:46Let's get in.
11:47So we just dived in the back.
11:48Grab us a defib, defib. Hurry up.
11:51Waited for the defib to get there because we were expecting the worst.
11:57She's hurt herself, maybe not in the water, like maybe a knee or a leg or something.
12:04Dislocated knee.
12:05Hit by a wave close to shore, a German tourist has dislocated her kneecap.
12:15Daniela and Marcus have been travelling around Australia for three weeks without so much as a
12:21scratch. After one hour on Bondi, Daniela's luck has run out.
12:26When we got there, she was screaming in that much pain. It was probably one of the most
12:31painful dislocations of a knee that I've ever seen.
12:45A specialist intensive care paramedic is requested. Until then, lifeguard's priority is pain management.
12:52But that hurts. It looks so far.
12:55Nah, don't look at it. It's all right. You're going to be fine.
13:00Daniela's knee is a contortion of ligaments, bone and nerves. Travelling over bumpy sand in a buggy
13:07could be the most agonising 80 metres of her life.
13:10The green whistle is before we move her.
13:13An analgesic, pain-killing gas is administered before the short journey.
13:18Put that in your mouth and just big breaths in and it'll start relieving the pain.
13:24So, real big breaths. It'll get a bit of a tangy taste.
13:28Okay, let's go, Marcus. Nice and slow.
13:30Yeah.
13:34One, two, three. Go.
13:36Mario Hop and I took a lot of extra care with that one. She tried to get her into the tower and
13:42nice and comfortable as quick as we could.
13:49Did you get me something to put under her feet?
13:54I was in the water and she was right at the edge and a huge wave hit her.
14:02And she fell on the ground and smashed her knee.
14:05Ordinarily, dislocations are treated in hospital.
14:08Hey, how are you going?
14:10Intensive care paramedic Fiona is trained to relocate joints in the field.
14:16Okay, sorry, darling. Sorry.
14:19She needs help with the procedure.
14:21Wait, is there a lifeguard? Can I borrow someone?
14:23Yeah.
14:25That's it. Just relax as much as possible and you need to give me your leg.
14:29Okay, can someone? Yep. Sorry, darling. Sorry. Big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths.
14:34Big, deep breaths. Can someone remove that, please?
14:39Yeah. Yep.
14:41Intensive care paramedic Fiona nudges Daniela's kneecap around in search of the right angle.
14:47Big, deep breaths. Okay, big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths.
14:53Big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths.
14:57Big, deep breaths. Big, deep breaths. All done, darling. All done.
15:02Better man. Yeah.
15:03Oh, my God. All done. All done.
15:05You're a legend. You're a legend.
15:07All done. Oh, my God.
15:09You okay? Yeah.
15:11Yeah? Oh, you're a brave lady. Well done.
15:14Really well done, darling. Really well done.
15:16Daniela experiences instantaneous relief.
15:19How bad's your pain now?
15:21If ten was the worst pain and zero is no pain at all, how bad is it now?
15:26Yes. Better?
15:28I'm going to pop a brace on it, okay, which will hold it in place, okay?
15:33And then we're going to have to get you up to hospital.
15:36I got pretty scared and didn't know what to do.
15:39Didn't know if I should just leave her right there where she was, but she was
15:43sitting on the ground and well, the next wave could hit her head or something. Other people
15:51from the beach called the lifeguard to come over. Yeah. But it was pretty scared.
16:01She's an IC paramedic. She's very experienced. We're very lucky enough to have them around.
16:06They get it quite quickly for us.
16:07In hospital, scans will hopefully rule out any long-term damage to Daniela's name.
16:14Bondi. It's the celebrity of beaches.
16:19Over the years, the Hollywood roll call has included heartthrob Zac Efron.
16:26Party girl Paris Hilton. And the one that got the lifeguards excited,
16:30the most famous lifeguard of all.
16:34Today, it's Victoria's Secret supermodel Heidi Klum.
16:38To meet Heidi Klum is like, you know, once in a lifetime kind of thing.
16:41I've watched the Victoria's Secret shows as a kid growing up.
16:45Not even as a kid, probably an adult.
16:48Mouse, Bischo and Whippet are joining Heidi in a photo shoot for the German supermodel's clothing lady.
16:54She's got an undi label. She's coming down and we're just doing some photos with her.
16:58I wanted a couple of young, fit Bondi lifeguards to shoot with, so they chose us for some reason.
17:06Mouse is concerned he's not quite male model quality today.
17:10A few days before the photo shoot, I had some physio done with some suction cups and
17:17basically my whole body was just a big bruise and I was looking absolutely terrible for it.
17:23But Whippet has his own image problems.
17:26He had a spare 10 minutes before Heidi Klum's arrival, so he's bolted out for a surf.
17:31And he's actually got stung across the face by a blue bottle.
17:34Hard to mocking numerous people yesterday for it.
17:39One lifeguard who always maintains peak condition for just these opportunities is Harry's.
17:45Harry's turned up as well and he loves this stuff. He's born for this stuff.
17:50He loves this stuff more than lifeguarding or anything, you know.
17:53Except he's been kept in the dark about this one.
17:57When I wasn't chosen for the Heidi Klum shoot, you know, was I upset?
18:02Harry's has just come straight out of the surf.
18:05Oh, look at his face.
18:07I wanted to see him in the underwear. I wanted to see if they looked as good as I.
18:11You know, you don't admit a lot of things in life, but before I get in my underwear,
18:16I get a spray tan. These boys were a little pale.
18:20He was so jealous. I loved it.
18:22No lookout is required to spot the German supermodel,
18:26who was taller than her security guards.
18:29Oh, my God. Look at this. Look at her.
18:31That's my blood.
18:33I'm told to keep my shirt on.
18:38Not very often that I'm suspicious.
18:40When she came down to Bondi expecting to do a photo shoot with three lifeguards,
18:44she was expecting, like, a couple of six-foot-plus good-looking blokes.
18:49And instead, she got Mean Whippet just looking at our absolute worst.
18:54So we're just going to go fast.
18:56Yeah.
18:56And maybe you guys look that way and I just turn it around.
18:59Right.
19:08She's put that sloppy where we go away.
19:10When I walked out, this little American lady, she was like,
19:14did you get those bruises from trying to save someone's life?
19:19I was trying to knock.
19:28Well done.
19:28Well done.
19:29Lifeguards and Bondi are the best.
19:33And the hardest.
19:36Heidi Klum, one of the boys.
19:37Or we could say Mouse, Whippet and Bisho, Victoria's Secret models.
19:53Bondi is one of the beautiful places in the whole world.
19:55It's such an iconic place.
19:57People come from all over the world.
19:59You get a slice of the action.
20:01But not everything always goes to plan.
20:03And it's so surprising to really witness how people react to being rescued.
20:07And you just don't know what you're going to get.
20:09Out in the front, he's got a cap on.
20:11Looks like a surf lesson.
20:13It's not.
20:14I noticed a guy in a bit of distress.
20:16I was near the flag area and got a call from Harry's.
20:18You don't get your standard surfer going out with a silver swimming cap.
20:32You don't belong in the ocean.
20:35I had to get him on my board because he couldn't stay on his.
20:37And he was having the best time.
20:50It was the greatest ride of his life.
20:52He's so happy.
21:03Is he going to go in the water?
21:05Or stay over here, eh?
21:07Yeah.
21:07Where the flag zone?
21:09He's pretty animated.
21:10I think it's his first time in the ocean.
21:12He is my mother's workmate.
21:16And we go surfing here because it's a very famous beach.
21:21He likes some extreme swarms.
21:33We really like people to come down to Bondi and have a good time and enjoy himself and
21:36have as much fun as they can.
21:38But, you know, it doesn't always pan out that way.
21:40It was about 2.30 in the day and I was on the water's edge watching the flags.
21:44And this young girl came up and she was shaking like a leaf.
21:48She said, oh, I need your help.
21:49He's old.
21:50He's really hairy.
21:50He's walking out now.
21:52She said she'd been indecently assaulting the surf.
21:55That's him.
21:56He's sort of, like, walking around, like, looking at everyone.
22:01I can't believe it.
22:02Like, we've got a little bit of that.
22:04It's scary.
22:04Bondi says your boys, are you there?
22:07Go ahead.
22:08I've just got this young girl here next to me.
22:09She's just in between the flags.
22:11Some guy was swimming up and grabbed her right on the crutch.
22:16I knew as soon as the girl had said that she'd been indecently assaulted that I had to call the police.
22:21This is, uh, Harry's now lifeguards down at Bonnie Dine.
22:25He's got, like, yellow socks.
22:26It's all right.
22:27Just bear with me.
22:28We'll get him.
22:29Okay, mate.
22:29He's right in the middle of the flag.
22:30It's about halfway there.
22:32He's, like, brown hair.
22:34He's actually floated on his back now, if you can see him.
22:37Yeah, I know that it gots.
22:39You got him?
22:40He's right behind those two girls.
22:41Yeah, that's true.
22:42Okay, mate.
22:42Yeah, I'm saying he just got on a girl.
22:46We need someone down here now.
22:47He's just done it again to another girl out on the sandbag.
22:50The police said to me that we could make a citizen's arrest if we wanted so we could grab the guy.
22:55Harry's just coming down here under cover if you need him.
23:04Hey, darling.
23:05Hey, excuse me.
23:06Hey, listen, I'm a lifeguard.
23:08Yeah?
23:09Listen, uh, did the guy touch you out there on the sandbag?
23:13Oh, he just scared us to find him.
23:16Yeah, okay, we've got a problem.
23:18Yeah, he just had to contact his arm around there.
23:21He was following you from behind.
23:23I was watching on the camera.
23:24Up in the lifeguard tower.
23:27Yeah, so it wasn't an innocent act at all.
23:30In the last 15, we've got him twice going near girls and touching them.
23:34Hello.
23:35Oh, how are you going?
23:36Do you guys want to come in?
23:37Yeah.
23:38Harry's actually there now, under cover.
23:40Just standing there.
23:41He bumped into me and then I kind of turned around and he was right there and he just, like,
23:55grabbed my leg but, like, and said, sorry.
23:57Yeah.
23:59Because since we grabbed my leg, I was like, oh, gross, so.
24:00All right.
24:01The detectives, they asked me to go out onto the sandbank and bring the guy in.
24:05Here we go, they're going in, they're closing in.
24:18Hey, mate.
24:21Hey, matey.
24:22Hey, matey.
24:23You're in, brother.
24:25Top one's in on the bench.
24:27Yeah.
24:28In on the bench, mate.
24:31Police are waiting for you up there.
24:32In on the bench.
24:33Get in there.
24:35I got a bit worried there for a second.
24:38I thought he might have had a bit of a swing at me because I said, come mate, you've got to come
24:41with arse and he kind of looked at me and went, what?
24:44And then he walked at me and kind of backpedaled a bit.
24:47Yeah, we're watching you.
24:49Yeah, watching what you've been doing.
24:52You have a chat to the police.
24:54Very bad.
24:57I'm old here and I'm your witness.
24:59Just listen to me for a second, okay?
25:05My name's Constable Aston from Bondi Police.
25:09At this stage, you are under arrest for assault.
25:12Just listen to me, listen to me.
25:15Let me talk for a second.
25:17At this stage, you are under arrest for assault.
25:19Do you understand that?
25:20Yeah, I'm so sorry.
25:22Let me finish, okay?
25:24We're going to ask you some questions.
25:25You don't have to say or do anything if you don't want to.
25:27Our job as lifeguards is to protect the public.
25:30You know, if anything ever does happen along these circumstances,
25:33we want people to come to the tower and let us know and we'll deal with it.
25:45Doing what we do, you need to be physically fit.
25:47Lives depend on it.
25:52Whippet's taken out the annual lifeguard race.
25:54Everyone's wondering what his secret is.
25:56What's he on? He's on some crazy diet, training, eating regime,
25:59and we all want a piece of it.
26:01Boys and Nicola,
26:03stoked you guys have taken the challenge, the 30-day challenge.
26:06I challenged everyone to do the 30-day challenge this year
26:08because I know what good things it's done for me.
26:11I used to be a complete pig.
26:12Beer, pizza, smashed them all in.
26:14And since taking on the challenge myself,
26:16I've seen the improvements in the way you look,
26:18but more importantly, the way you feel and how much fitter and stronger I am.
26:21Over the next 30 days, we're going to give up a few things.
26:24We're going to increase our training.
26:25It's all about detoxing the body,
26:27getting rid of a lot of the unnecessary toxins that we put into it.
26:30In a nutshell, the 30-day challenge is predominantly diet-based.
26:33No bread, rice, pasta, no alcohol, no coffee, and no milk.
26:39Add on top of that training.
26:40Try and train every day, you know, five times a week at least,
26:43and that'll get you your best results.
26:45Anyone who's caught cheating the first time, 100 burpees.
26:49Anyone who's caught cheating the second time,
26:51Hobbo's given me permission to make them clean the toilets
26:54and the change rooms, top to bottom.
26:56Probably me cleaning them.
26:58You know, I try and keep fit, and I thought,
27:00you know, you put that little bit extra in, you know,
27:01you get that extra little six-pack down there.
27:04We've got the guys from Measure Up down here today.
27:07We're going to get some body scans, which are pretty cool.
27:09They're going to give you the amount of kilos of fat you've got in your body,
27:13and also a body fat percentage.
27:15So at the end of the 30 days, we'll measure up again
27:18and see what results we've got.
27:21Hands flat down our mouth.
27:22I think there was definitely a few of us who weren't quite feeling at our peak,
27:26and we had a little bit of room to improve upon.
27:29Well, I've got 10 kilos more muscle than him.
27:31That's what's going on.
27:32So if I lose 10 kilos of body fat, I'll be better than that.
27:37At this stage, it's the tortoise and the hare.
27:43We've been working together for a long time now, and it's funny.
27:46He said, you want to team up with me?
27:47And I went, oh, no, here we go.
27:50No one boxed since we're five years old.
27:51He's come, we've worked over 20 years.
27:53We don't really get on the beach together that much these days.
27:57So when we do, it's generally something normally happens.
28:02On that day, there wasn't a lot going on, but the tide was starting to run out.
28:05We could have a possible three or four here.
28:07We were just talking about things and saying, well, there's something happens when we're together.
28:11And nothing had happened for the whole day.
28:15And all of a sudden...
28:17That girl waving box, you might have to go for a paddle.
28:21Yeah, box is going in for that.
28:23I went in first because he doesn't move as quick as me.
28:30He's in.
28:30He's got four.
28:42Grab hold, grab hold.
28:44As soon as I got out in the water, all of a sudden, there was a few people needing my help,
28:47and I need a backup.
28:48You all right?
28:51I noticed he had four people, one really struggling.
28:53And with it so small, I was a bit hesitant to go in.
28:55I was waiting for the very last moment until I had to strip off.
28:58It looks like box has never done a rescue before.
29:00You think your best mate, Hop, would just come and help me and back me up,
29:08but I don't know where he is.
29:14You all right?
29:15Yeah, though.
29:15It looks like box has never done a rescue before.
29:17Could you head that way?
29:18I gave him that little bit of extra time so he could struggle that bit longer and fire him up a little
29:22bit more until I finally got out there and helped him out.
29:28Here we go, backwards.
29:30I'm struggling to get my patient in, and Hoppo just takes the easy option.
29:41He's got this little kid.
29:42I went that little bit slower once I had the girl on the board, so then I wouldn't have to go back.
29:55Box had to go back for more rescues.
29:58Can you swim?
29:58No.
29:59What are you doing out here?
30:00Huh?
30:02That way, head down.
30:03All right, all right.
30:05Then another one appeared.
30:06All right.
30:06All right.
30:10Oh, hey, so funny.
30:11Come on.
30:16Out, out, out.
30:17I went in for one, and then it just, like, I thought they were following each other.
30:23After that rescue with Hoppo, there was no chance I wasn't going to get him back.
30:26You all right, Hop?
30:36There were definitely a few guys that were taking a 30-day challenge a lot more seriously than
30:43others.
30:43For me, I just wanted to do it.
30:45I wasn't really putting myself against anyone.
30:47They really showed a good level of determination.
30:52The sort of food they were eating really improved.
30:54Just a bit of chicken, salad.
30:57There ain't no carbs on my plate.
31:00Now, halfway through the 30-day challenge, it's becoming pretty difficult trying not to
31:04have a beer and not have the coffee.
31:06It's, I find it very, very difficult.
31:11My revenge on Hoppo was trying to catch him cheating on Whipper's 30-day challenge.
31:16How am I?
31:16What's doing, Mum?
31:18We decided to put some hidden cameras in my unit.
31:20There's a camera right in there.
31:22Try to catch him out eating and drinking all the wrong stuff.
31:24I've got a camera in here too.
31:25No way.
31:26Absolutely nailed that.
31:28Just preparing all the food.
31:29Things that the team can't eat on the 30-day challenge.
31:31Got lasagna, the garlic bread's ready to go in the oven.
31:34Bread, rice, pasta, cut out dairy, so milk and cheese, and definitely no alcohol.
31:41I'm not on no 30-day challenge.
31:46Maxie walked straight into my house and said, can I have a glass of red?
31:51I said, you're not allowed to drink.
31:52He goes, oh, yeah, boys.
31:56Hoppo was really easy.
31:57He was just like too easy.
31:59Yeah, the best was when we brought out the cheesecake.
32:05Oh, that cheesecake looks that good, mate.
32:07I didn't think it was going to pan out as good as it did.
32:09Not one person ate one bit of salt.
32:16All right, boys.
32:17Stoked with the effort you guys have put in.
32:19We'll give you one last little chance to own up to any indiscretions,
32:23because we did make a rule at the start that there would be 100 burpees on offer
32:29if anyone got caught breaking the rules.
32:31I don't know if you guys noticed, but I did do a bit of sneaky investigation.
32:35So gather around, boys. Have a little seat.
32:39Oh, is that you eating garlic bread?
32:41When I saw the video, I was really surprised.
32:43I didn't tweak one bit.
32:44Maxie's woofing into some lasagna.
32:46He put the lasagna right next to me, and he knew I'd crumble.
32:49Once I saw that red wine, I saw lasagna, and saw that cheesecake, I was gone.
32:55So we're going to enforce the first rule, 100 burpees, eh?
32:59Punishment's a punishment, and rules are there to be broken.
33:01If you break them, you've got to do it.
33:03Three.
33:05Four.
33:06I was not surprised when Kerrbox had got Poppo and Maxie to falter from the diet.
33:12There's 15.
33:15That's 30, boys. Keep it up.
33:19That's 50, boys. Let's go.
33:24Come on, let's go. Let's go. 15 to go.
33:27Let's go. Keep it up. Last 10.
33:29Two.
33:32And one. Good job.
33:34100 burpees. I nailed it.
33:37Well done.
33:38You only live once, and as long as I can still get to that person in time,
33:42which I can, I know I can, that's all that matters.
33:45I can have all the cheesecake I want.
33:52I definitely think that when tourists come down,
33:55they can look at their conditions and they can look deceivingly safe.
33:57Unfortunately, with the tide, all our rips start to flare up.
34:01There's people like five feet from the shore and they're nearly drowning.
34:05They're not far out, but they're just, they're in a bit of strife.
34:10Dunstan and I get the call to investigate two swimmers down the south end.
34:14You could see these two swimmers were in a lot of distress.
34:20That rip just had complete control of them and they were just getting taken out to sea.
34:27All right, sit to the side.
34:30Nicola attempted to give them direction and quickly surmised that it was pointless.
34:35Go, Dunny, go.
34:42They're both in.
34:43I wouldn't say they were completely hysterical yet, but they were definitely in the realms of
35:02quite a bad panic.
35:05They're trying to swim against it and they're going backwards.
35:07They were doing the Michael Jackson moonwalk in the ocean going backwards like this.
35:18When we got them onto the board and they kind of caught their breath,
35:20they almost erupted into laughter and I think for a lot of people it's that embarrassment.
35:26Also, I think she was somewhat losing her swimmer top,
35:28so I think she was having a little giggle to herself as she was trying to keep her modesty.
35:31As soon as we got them into the beach, like, oh, thanks a million, thanks a million,
35:36it did not take long to realise that Declan and Kelly were Irish.
35:40They just dragged us out to a far and couldn't swim anymore and they couldn't break.
35:45Just kept going under. I thought it was going to die.
35:49The Irish definitely have an uncanny ability to find any rip on the beach.
35:53I thought it would have been like cudgy and it would have been all right, but it's not.
35:56I've got to love the Irish. My dad's Irish. My whole family's Irish.
35:59The sharks, I'm going with the waves, Will.
36:06Today's the last day of the 30-day challenge.
36:08We've had the boys over the last 30 days following a bit of a diet plan and training regime.
36:14Judgment day. How are we? Ready to go, boys? Who's going first?
36:17My boy. I'll go first.
36:22I had a few little slip up, so I'm worried that it might come out. It might blow out a little bit.
36:30I'm pretty anxious to find out my results.
36:33I'm pretty excited to eat some naughty, naughty, complex carbohydrates.
36:45The winner of the 30-day challenge is the person who loses the most body fat percentage comparing
36:50where they start to where they finish. So the idea is to maintain your muscle mass
36:55whilst losing as much excess fat as possible.
36:59Boys and Nicola, thanks for taking part in the 30-day challenge. One little thing we agreed on at
37:04the start was whoever lost would be cleaning the toilets over the road. So the winner of the first
37:11inaugural Bondi Lifeguards 30-day challenge with a bit of an outstanding effort and a result of 20.1%
37:19transformation. The ultimate. They're gone.
37:26Well done, Gons. Some of the other massive mentions was Beardy lost 4.1 kilos. Nicola lost
37:33seven and a half kilos. So that's a massive, massive change in 30 days. And hop.
37:41Bottom of the list was Hoppo. You actually lost a bit of weight still, all of fat, which is good.
37:45You put on a bit of muscle mass, so that didn't help your thing, but you lost over a kilo of fat,
37:50but you'll be over in the dunny scrub and away the summer. No matter what position you are,
37:54how long you've been here, if you're the one that's come last in this competition,
37:57everyone knew the rules. Well, you've got to go and do it. There's no excuses.
38:19Lifeguards deal with most emergencies in the surf.
38:22There's no swimming down this end of the beach today. But beyond the beach lies another serious danger.
38:30The cliffs around this area are really high. They're sandstone cliffs, and they range from
38:3410 metres to up to 40 metres. You can get some spectacular views from them, but the problem is
38:39there's potential for people that are slipping off. They get very mossy and slippery, so it can
38:44potentially be dangerous. Bondi to Peroni come in, just looking out towards the point. There's a police
38:52boat and a helicopter together. Do you want to ring the coppers? Do you want to ring Bondi?
38:57Constable Thomas, my name's Corey. How are you? We've got your guys police chopper in a police boat
39:02hanging off the south point of Bondi. We've just got off the phone to the police,
39:08and somebody's gone for a walk around the cliff, and they got stuck.
39:12We saw the chopper came past that's hammer. We thought there's another shark, so we're like,
39:18oh no, not again. Everyone started sort of leaving the water, so we had to come back up and just make
39:22sure. It just turns out to be two blokes down there. They've been on the ledge for about an hour.
39:27There's a big crowd here watching, so the police here and police rescue are trying to get them out,
39:32so it's a long way down. We're going to be lowering some ropes down. Don't grab them,
39:38okay? Just leave them alone. We're going to haul you straight up the cliff from where you are.
39:44Fortunately, the boys aren't injured, though with a big crowd watching on,
39:48their egos may be in for a hit.
39:53They're going to get a bit of a shock when they come back up and see this huge crowd there.
40:02There were two 16-year-old boys in Western Sydney who decided to come out to Bondi for the day and go
40:12exploring. So there's like a ledge like that, and then we jumped from one to the other, and then we
40:18walked around and realised that there was no way after that. We couldn't get back. We tried like
40:23sort of climbing back onto it, and it wasn't possible. It is holidays, and teenage boys do want
40:29to go on and, I guess, explore. I was a teenager a few months ago, so I'm guilty of it myself.
40:36If I'm near the water, you know, we could zoom in there in the jet ski and get them out that way,
40:40but since they're up more, we'll leave that to the police and police rescue, and they've done the job,
40:43and we can go back to the beach now and get back to looking after the flags.
40:50It's easy to have fun at Bondi,
40:52it's easy to have fun at the beach.
40:55But powerful waves, rocks, and crowded surf also make it an easy place to get hurt.
41:03Dislocated shoulder, maybe?
41:05On average, lifeguards deal with two to three dislocations per week.
41:09Dislocated knees, elbows, shoulders, you name it.
41:17Uh, Bondi, Central, South, Mariana. We're going to bring up a dislocated shoulder, boys.
41:24Yeah, copy, yay. Mate, I'm off here with Jeffy. I'll get everything ready. I'll get Jeff to get on the airboat.
41:30Boys radioed it in and said they had a patient, Ollie, who's from the UK, with a dislocated shoulder.
41:36Ollie was surfing when he dislocated his shoulder.
41:41Maxi prepares methoxyfluorane, an analgesic gas.
41:45Have you ever had one of these before?
41:47No, what is this? It's a pain relief.
41:49Yeah. So it's, uh, helps the pain.
41:54Went over that wave, and it just, it just popped down.
41:57I knew it as I was coming down. I was like, oh, this, and then got up.
42:01I was trying to pop it in myself for quite some time, but just wasn't going in.
42:05It really hurts. Like, the intensity of the pain just builds up and up.
42:11You know, we gave him a few green whistles, and he was bit off his head for a little while.
42:15You all right? This is good. This stuff is sick.
42:19This is ridiculous. Tell the ambulance people to take their time.
42:23Just tell them to take their time. This is fine for now.
42:26Oh, it's okay. Yeah.
42:33Ordinarily, dislocated shoulders are treated in hospital.
42:36Pain in there?
42:37It's more than okay. It's been right by a second.
42:40Today, though, Jill, an extended care paramedic, has come to put Ollie's shoulder back in place at the tower.
42:47There's a couple of techniques that we use, and a lot of time, the pain is so great.
42:53The muscle, your muscles get so tense, and that's, and that's what you're fighting against,
42:57and you need him to relax and work with you and trust you.
43:02Ollie is administered with morphine in preparation for the procedure.
43:05I've got a rush to the head now, so it's going to be like a double rush to the head after this.
43:11Having the dislocation specialist come to our doorstep is, it's, it's a pretty unique thing.
43:16I've only seen it a few times, and just watching him do it, it's, it's pretty cool.
43:20You get another sort of aspect of how highly trained these people are, and how good they are at their job.
43:25This hand's going to come up on my left shoulder.
43:28Oh, that is slightly painful.
43:31Oh, naughty, oh, Lesley, do you have a spare cigarette?
43:46Yeah, the funny thing is that there was no one in the room called Lesley,
43:50and he doesn't even smoke cigarettes, so he was out there.
43:54I've seen the ambos take about five or six times to get it in, but look,
44:01they have to be very patient to do that job.
44:07Even though Ollie has been given morphine and methoxyflurane,
44:11the pain will be unbearable if something goes wrong.
44:15Oh, being a lifeguard, I want to learn as much as I can,
44:20so I kind of try and stick around and watch them.
44:24We have a couple of techniques that we're using.
44:25We can use them in combination with each other.
44:28And the last one I used is external rotation.
44:31Soon, Ollie's painkillers will wear off.
44:37Jill makes her final attempt.
44:44You could see in his face that it went back in and that he was out of pain.
44:48Well done, mate. Well done.
44:50It wasn't a real kind of thing. It just went in real subtly.
44:53It just sort of slipped back in.
44:55That looks a bad looking shoulder.
44:57As the painkillers wear off, Ollie learns about some of his strange mutterings
45:02whilst under the influence of the green whistle.
45:05He was a bit shocked when we asked him, you know,
45:07who was Lesley and why did he want a cigarette?
45:12Wait, what? I said this?
45:15Lesley, do you have a spare cigarette?
45:18I was meant to meet someone today called Lesley, but I don't even smoke.
45:23So half of it was right, but the rest was just crazy shit.
45:30God love the green whistle and God love the morphine.
45:36He's back in one piece, but it'll be a few weeks out of the surf for Ollie.
45:4119-year-old local boy Jethro James and 21-year-old South African Anthony Glick are the new trainees
45:50at Bondi.
45:51The new bloke's on the block.
45:54I'm keeping a close eye on both of them because come next season, there could be a lifeguard job
45:59come up, so one of those two may be in good contention to get one.
46:03Yeah, if there's one spot, yeah, it's a cruel world and we've got to push the weak line out of here,
46:10so game one, Jeth.
46:11Yeah, it is good, but there's a little bit of competition as well.
46:14I mean, it pushes us both, the competition.
46:16It's only going to make us both better.
46:18I've lived in Clovelly my whole life, just around the corner from Tamarama and Bronte.
46:24Everything I do revolves around the ocean, I surf, I bodyboard.
46:26I just love the ocean, so there couldn't really be a better job to go along with that lifestyle.
46:31I love Jethro, he's good.
46:33He's a breath of fresh air, he really is.
46:35And he's keen to learn, he listens and he looks like Nicola.
46:40I do look like Nicola and I've been copying that a lot, it's good fun.
46:44I love his long blonde locks.
46:47Thank you, it is beautiful hair.
46:50We've got a couple of names, so I'll reel them off.
46:52We've got Nicola, Twig, Hanson, Hair Farmer.
46:59Oh yeah, I'm getting moving, but I think the boys are just jealous.
47:02Some of those guys have nothing on their heads.
47:06Like every trainee, Jethro's ultimate goal is to qualify as a fully-fledged lifeguard.
47:12Jethro needs to prove to me during this summer,
47:15whether he's ready for a lifeguard position.
47:17The youngest team member, Jethro must prove he has what it takes.
47:22It is a dream come true, there's nothing else I'd rather do, so I'm going to fight with everything
47:26I've got to take the job.
47:33Hey sir.
47:35I have a friend out there, he's really tired.
47:38Where is he?
47:39He is sure head, way out there.
47:45What's he doing out there?
47:46We went too far.
47:47Bondi Central.
47:49See that guy on the bodyboard?
47:50It's about 50 metres out.
47:53He needs help.
47:54Yeah, I've got him.
47:56That looks like 200 to me.
47:57Jethro will go for a paddle.
48:00Copy mate.
48:01Every time I go for a rescue, I get nervous because I know the boy's going to be looking
48:05at me and going, how's he going to do?
48:09There's no way I've rescued anyone that far out.
48:10It's a mystery why Gino from Texas is over 200 metres from shore.
48:21I don't know how he's got out so far because there's no ribs pulling him out.
48:24But Azza thinks he knows the answer.
48:27What's he got, a GoPro on his board?
48:29Yes.
48:30I'm not sure yet.
48:33It's kind of scary.
48:35So what, he's gone videoing himself, ended up out the back, most arguably unaware,
48:40filming himself.
48:40He's been out here for a while and I'm kind of stuck.
48:43And as you can see, I'm pretty far out of the furthest I've ever been in the ocean.
48:56Do you think he's panicking right now or...?
48:57A little bit.
49:00As well as being 200 metres from shore, Gino poses another problem for trainee Jethro.
49:06I got out there and the guy was at least double my weight.
49:10He's a big Texas guy.
49:13He's about probably 6'3", maybe.
49:16He's 70, maybe.
49:17The little lifeguard I've sent out there, he's a trainee.
49:20He's probably about 70 pounds.
49:21What's your name, man?
49:23Thank you, bro.
49:25I struggled getting him on the board.
49:26I think we might have rolled it twice.
49:28So that was some negative points there.
49:36Not only does Jethro have his work cut out, but every senior lifeguard on the beach is watching.
49:43This is going to take a while.
49:45The best way to get him in was just him holding onto the rope and paddling him in.
49:49The toe technique, it's a bit slow, especially with a guy of that size.
49:56It's a massive weight difference between Jethro and the big Texas dude.
50:01His little chicken arms can't tug the big bloke in.
50:05It's a hard rescue when you've got to paddle them in that far against the wind.
50:08Thank you, man.
50:11I was right here next to all these people, and then I wasn't next to all these people.
50:14There were some moments where I was cursing myself.
50:19We're definitely at least a quarter of the way to New Zealand there.
50:22I've never seen anyone that far out.
50:25I'm tired.
50:25Let's not lay down and get a beer.
50:27I'm tired as well.
50:28It's not about how you get him in.
50:30It's if you get him in.
50:31And he did that.
50:32He succeeded.
50:33So yeah, good on him.
50:35I had to paddle really hard the whole time just to toe his weight behind me.
50:38So it was a big workout.
50:40Jethro's recent rescue puts him in good stead with senior lifeguards.
50:48But a trainee's fortunes can quickly change.
50:51It was late afternoon.
50:53It was a pretty busy day.
50:54I locked up the tower.
50:55I went, you know what, I'll go in there and clean it up.
50:58Get some good points in my name.
51:00So I went in there to clean it up.
51:01When I went in there, I was only propping the door open with my foot.
51:06My foot slipped off.
51:07And it just all came crashing down and that was the end of it.
51:21Yeah, north tower to Chapo back up.
51:27Probably not going to believe this one, but I was semi stuck in the tower.
51:30The door and the roof just shut on me and I can't get out.
51:32So yeah, when I radioed in, there was about 10 seconds of silence going, what?
51:43Like no one could really understand.
51:44And then it was just pure laughter.
51:50Oh, really?
51:52Yeah, it's pretty heavy.
51:53I'm stuck.
51:53The door's not opening, eh?
51:54The door's not opening, eh?
51:56Yeah.
51:56Oh, no!
52:00You think you've seen everything.
52:02Trainees, they always come up with something new, don't they?
52:05Yeah, unfortunately Hoppo was on.
52:06Hoppo was in the tower.
52:07So there you watch the whole event unfold.
52:10Not only is Jethro stuck, but none of his brothers in blue are rushing to the rescue.
52:16They were just waiting.
52:17No one was helping me.
52:19We don't think we're just going to leave in there till tomorrow morning when we open it up.
52:26Oh, rescue!
52:29I got stuck.
52:29What are you doing there, bro?
52:30I got stuck.
52:31Are you serious?
52:33You couldn't get out?
52:34Redy didn't even know I was in there.
52:35Redy just came by and found me in there.
52:37So thank God Redy was around.
52:39He's finally managed to fly the coop, but now Jethro has to face his boss, Hoppo.
52:45Have you got an explanation on how it actually happened?
52:48Yeah, I was using my back foot to hold it open, and I leaned in a little bit too far,
52:52my foot slipped, and it all shut.
53:00It's been a long afternoon, but that's just made my day.
53:09Sun, sand, surf.
53:11Bondi's lifeguards work at one of the best offices on the planet.
53:15However, it's not always a dream job.
53:23Our bread and butter's lifeguards is doing the rescues down here on the beach, but
53:27unfortunately there's a dark side, and that's body retrievals.
53:31Incidents including fishermen swept off rocks, general misadventure, and suicide,
53:36account for as many as a dozen body retrievals every season.
53:40The bodies can be bashed up, then also the families come down,
53:44and you become part of the grieving process, which can be quite horrific for the guys.
53:58Bondi lifeguards, Aaron speaking.
54:00It was a gloomy day with maybe five foot swell, just southerly winds, no one really around.
54:06We're about to pack up, I think it was about 6.30, and as I received a call...
54:09Yep. In the water.
54:11Just in.
54:12I think the initial call was that there was a body, possibly on the rocks, possibly in the water.
54:23We didn't really know at that stage.
54:27Police have informed lifeguards that the person has fallen from a cliff,
54:32but is still showing signs of life floating in the water.
54:35Whenever someone's, you know, still hanging on by us, we want to try and get there as quick as we can.
54:40In these moments, it's a quick, but a very important decision as to who goes.
54:45Luke and Corey decide to leave 19-year-old Jethro behind.
54:49Jethro is still a trainee, so, you know, it's probably best not to send him into a scenario like that
54:55at the moment.
54:56Yeah, so I'm just thinking about if I was on the back of that ski going over there now,
55:00how I would deal with that situation.
55:04They've got a visual on them. Chopper's on the way.
55:06I mean, the job has its pros and cons, and that's part of the job, but it's not good.
55:13It's definitely the dark side of the job.
55:17Somewhere inside me, I wanted to go just to be, like, hands-on part of the team,
55:21but I haven't seen a dead body, which I'm happy about.
55:25So definitely having Corey and Luke, who are much more experienced than I am,
55:29going over there, it's better.
55:30The area we were headed to is five kilometres to the north of Bondi.
55:44It is very spooky.
55:45It's just these cliffs that have to be 30 metres.
55:48The water's dark.
55:50You know, there's a lot of sharks around there.
55:52So, yeah, all sorts of things kind of go through your head as you're going around there.
55:57After 20 minutes battling the tough conditions, lifeguards close in on the location.
56:02We saw the chopper fly overhead, and we got, you know, a kilometre or so away,
56:07and we could see somebody winching down.
56:09Oh, look, they're winching.
56:10Just get up there and make sure they don't need any assistance in the water,
56:25and if it's all good, then head back.
56:27As we were approaching, we were probably about 200 metres away,
56:31and the chopper had flown past us, located the person, and, mate, they winched down
56:36and straight back up again, probably within about 30 seconds flat.
56:40Yeah, mate, chopper seems to maybe be leaving.
56:45Can you just ring one through yourself and confirm with us, please?
56:48Yeah, copy. Stand by, mate.
56:50Oh, they're going to land. They're landing, are they?
56:53Yeah.
56:54Yeah, central of the jet ski boys, they have picked the patient up,
56:57and they're going up to the park, so head back.
57:00Yeah, mate, copy.
57:05They took the patient from the water and landed up around Bloor Flues on a park up there,
57:09where they were met with other paramedics.
57:12They started resuscitating, found out it's a young girl, a girl, so that's basically how it unfolded.
57:23Paramedics resuscitated the woman, and she was taken to hospital.
57:27But sadly, she passed away 24 hours later.
57:34Yeah, we probably did make the right decision in leaving Jethro behind, but I think maybe when
57:39the time's right, he'll be like, no, no, I'm going.
57:42Being in a rescue service, you're going to get caught out, and you're going to have to do it at some stage.
57:50The boys and the police rescue did their best.
57:53That's all we can do, really, but it's definitely sad.
57:55Yeah, it's a sad story.
57:57Sad ending.
