00:00Hello, my name is Alex. I'm the guitar player of Carry Carry.
00:14We're a band based in Vienna, Austria. It's our first time in the States.
00:17We just came off a west coast run, then we flew to South Bay to do a few shows.
00:21An eastern leg of our tour here in Chicago.
00:24Haven't had Dieptischpitzer yet, but I'm excited for it.
00:28We're going to Detroit and Boston, Toronto and New York before heading back to Europe
00:34and starting in Berlin where we'll be on tour for another two months.
00:37So I'm very excited for that.
00:39Usually I got a bigger rig, so this is like the small rig here because we're flying.
00:44My main guitars are all here.
00:47That's a Hofner Werethin. It's a German brand.
00:50You probably know Hofner for the violin basses that Paul McCartney uses.
00:55And actually I won this guitar when I was like 18 or 19 at a band contest that Hofner sponsored.
01:01And ever since I've been like a player and collector.
01:04So usually I only play Hofner.
01:06And this is like made in China or something.
01:10So it's like 300 euros, which is like 300 dollars or 250 dollars.
01:15And they usually make those with humbuckers.
01:19And this one is like weirdly with single cores.
01:22And actually I'm a Hofner endorser now.
01:25Just because I wanted to get another of those guitars because I was afraid.
01:30You know, they're called very thin, so they're very fragile.
01:32And I'm afraid I'm going to break one when flying.
01:34And I kind of just contacted them to say, hey, do you have more of those?
01:38Because I can't find them anywhere.
01:40And I just want to buy a second one just as a spare.
01:43And they were like, no, we don't do very thin with single coils.
01:47Which, I don't know, they're like a family run company.
01:50They're not very big.
01:51So it's just apparently one guy just decided to do a single coil version.
01:55And that's the one they gave away.
01:57So, yeah.
01:58Meanwhile, I found a second one on Craigslist actually.
02:01And I love it.
02:03It's a very good guitar.
02:04Very defining for my sound.
02:07It has this like weird switcher here, this guitar.
02:09You know, it's like you can turn on all of them at the same time and switch.
02:14I don't really use this one because I actually think that those are single coil bass pickups.
02:20So, I don't think that this really sounds like a bridge pickup.
02:25It's still like a little muffled.
02:27So I really don't use it.
02:28And I usually just use the neck pickup and the middle one because it's a little more twangy.
02:34If it needs to be a little more twangy, a little more like a neck bridge pickup, I use that one.
02:39I usually have it 100% volume up.
02:43Unfortunately, those kind of volume tone plate things just always fall off.
02:49That's why it looks like it does, you know.
02:52It's a little road-worn already.
02:54Yeah, and with strings I'm very straightforward.
02:56It's just like Dardario 10 gauge strings.
03:00I used to have flat ones on the other guitar for a while but stopped doing it because it's fine as it is.
03:06I'm not very specific about it.
03:08In standard tuning, I usually play like, I would say like 60% of my set in drop-deep.
03:14And if it has to go lower, I'll have the Digitec drop.
03:19So I just like can turn it down like another full tone or octave if I want.
03:24Yeah, so this is like the cheap one.
03:26And because I couldn't find another one like it, I bought this one off of Craxis as well.
03:32And that's kind of like the German made version, the very thin special.
03:36And it has those diamonds mini pickups.
03:39So they're kind of like the ones that you'd have in a Thunder, uh, Firebird, Gibson Firebird.
03:45Um, I think in overall this like, this is probably like in the range of a Tele, Telecaster.
03:53And this kind of like sounds like a Jazzmaster a little bit.
03:55But because they're hollow body and a little thicker, I feel like they've got more body and sound a little special.
04:02I'm kind of, you know, trying to find my own sound and I've always felt like if I play a Strat or a Tele,
04:07it's, it feels like everything has been set, you know, there's nothing to add.
04:11So, yeah.
04:13The other thing that's different here is that it has a kill switch, which I really like.
04:18It's nice to go to switch positions.
04:22Um, it has an overall volume knob that I use a lot actually to just, you know,
04:29sometimes if I do a lot of looping and if I kind of like solo over it or have like another layer of a tone,
04:36I just roll it down and I kind of like always do it with my little finger while playing,
04:40which is nice to have it up here, you know, so I can just like play and, you know, do this all the time.
04:45And then I have a bit of like a tick, you know, that I always have to check if all of them are on 10.
04:53So actually I think it would be quite good to just kind of like lock them or get rid of them.
04:56But this one is very, this is very helpful because it's just, I don't, a lot of people use like a volume pedal, right?
05:02To kind of like turn off the guitar. So it's kind of like my thing that I just like go down and up in between songs.
05:08And yeah, so regular 10 gauge strings on it.
05:12Used to have flat mounts, don't anymore because it was, for some songs it was cool,
05:17but overall it was a little lacking kind of like bite and aggressiveness.
05:21And yeah, I think I should, I'm a little embarrassed. We played a very sweaty gig, which just came from Texas.
05:27So all of them are very sweaty. I like to move a lot. I get sweaty. So I'm sorry for that.
05:33Usually I should have cleaned up before, but you got to bear with me.
05:37And then I've got this guitar here that I just own for one hour.
05:43I just went into music store. It doesn't have anything on it.
05:49Ah, but there, there are like little holes in there. So maybe it used to be something.
05:54I was looking to find a harmony guitar because they're very rare to find in Europe.
06:02And if they are, they're quite expensive. So I just thought like maybe buy like a harmony rocket or something,
06:06like a semi acoustic thing. And I tried a few and they all didn't click with me.
06:10And this very cheap guitar that I just bought for $300 immediately clicked.
06:15And it's just like, I start immediately like things come out.
06:20It's very surprisingly plays very well. It's set up very well.
06:25It plays like an expensive guitar, honestly.
06:27Well, it's very cheaply made. You can see that it's just, you know, there's no fancy binding or anything.
06:33It's very rough. It looks like a cheap, you know, store guitar, but it sounds, it sounds great.
06:41I think, I guess sometimes you like, they probably picked the great wood for this one.
06:47And yeah, you just gotta be lucky. It's like when they say, well, I want a pre-CBS guitar,
06:52because you know, that's where it's not like, you know, CBS bought Fender and then from one day to the next,
06:58all the guitars were shipped. I just think you've got to be more lucky.
07:02And I think I got lucky today.
07:04All right. So next up are pedals.
07:09I think it looks more complex. Again, this is my flyer rigs. It's a little condensed.
07:14Usually I also have a small stone phaser that I really like.
07:19This is a color sound Wah Fuzz, which is very cool.
07:24I don't, I haven't played Wah for a long time.
07:27And I kind of thought that the Wah is a cry baby.
07:31And then I tried it. I didn't like it at all.
07:33And then I bought this just because it looks cool. It's from the seventies.
07:36And yeah, it's very cool. I do it for that.
07:39It's kind of like Neu, crowd rock, King Gizzard.
07:42It's kind of .
07:45It's perfect for that.
07:47Tuner, the Digitech drop, I just used for one song that I just want to get the,
07:54kind of like get the guitar one full step deeper.
07:57And I didn't want to bring an extra guitar that's always tuned that way.
08:00So it works very well.
08:02That's just a spring reverb pedal by J-Jazz Pedals.
08:05Honestly, it's mainly because my old amp always had problems with the spring reverb.
08:11So it kind of like would drop out sometimes during the set.
08:14But then I had to have like the backup and I use it if I need some extra reverb.
08:18Especially when I'm using amps on the road that I'm, you know, not 100% familiar with the reverb.
08:24Because I'm very specific on reverbs.
08:27This is a Boss Delay.
08:30I just use it for one song.
08:32I do like a written picking thing.
08:35I think people know it.
08:36It's nothing special.
08:37Colorsound Power Boost.
08:39I think that's the magic sauce of my rig.
08:42I think it's not the original one.
08:44The original ones go for insane prices.
08:46It runs on battery.
08:48Also another tick of mine.
08:49That's why I just plugged it out.
08:51Because it runs on battery.
08:52It's kind of like the battery empties when you keep it plugged in.
08:55So I was like, oh, I gotta plug it out.
08:57So sorry for that.
08:58It's just a booster.
08:59It just kind of like fattens up the signal.
09:01I think it's like using a LA-2A compressor or something.
09:06Yeah.
09:07So it just gives that body that I want.
09:09Especially because we don't have a bass player on the regular.
09:11So sometimes it's kind of like my guitar has to fill the frequency space off the bass.
09:17So this helps a lot with it.
09:19It's always on.
09:21This is actually supposed to be a remake of that pedal.
09:26Because I wanted to get rid of it.
09:28Because it's so big.
09:29It uses battery and it's very inconvenient.
09:31So I just looked for different options to get rid of that.
09:34Oh, yeah.
09:35So I bought this one.
09:36The special cranker by Earthquaker Devices.
09:39Which is supposed to be the same thing.
09:41But it's not.
09:42It's definitely not.
09:43But it's very cool.
09:44It sounds like much cleaner and colder in a way.
09:49If that makes sense.
09:50So I kind of use it as like my next level boost.
09:54So if I wanted to get like very fuzzy and distorted, I just like put that on as well.
09:58Which is very cool.
09:59Mano Park is an octaver.
10:04Again, for the songs where I play bass.
10:07Well, I had actually I bought a double headed guitar.
10:11To kind of like switch between bass and guitar within songs.
10:16But it was just much easier to use the octaver pedal.
10:19And so I used that.
10:20It's set up.
10:21So the sub octave is 100%.
10:24The higher octave is off.
10:26And the dry.
10:27I kind of like.
10:28One song I've got it on.
10:29The other one I've got it off.
10:30So I just switched.
10:31A tidy whitey compressor.
10:34It's just the compressor.
10:35Because I usually get very excited while playing.
10:38So we might sound check and the level is perfect.
10:41Because I put the amp to true.
10:43So it's exactly where it breaks.
10:45And then I play during the show.
10:47And I get too excited and it's just fuzzy.
10:50So I've got the compressor to keep me contained.
10:54And this one is another.
10:57It's called the Clover by JHS Pedals.
11:00I think it's modeled after some.
11:02Pre-amp unit that the Edge of U2 uses.
11:05And again, I think the way that I treat.
11:09Distortion or overdrive.
11:11That none of those are overdrive pedals.
11:14Because I don't know.
11:15It never worked for me.
11:16So I think they're just ways to.
11:19Push the valve a little more.
11:22To get that sound.
11:24That I'm looking for.
11:25And usually like.
11:26Those two are always on.
11:28Just as the basic sound.
11:30And this one I just like.
11:32Put in if it needs to go hard.
11:34And yeah.
11:35That's it.
11:36That's like a.
11:37I had a Hoffner delay here.
11:39Which is like $30.
11:41And it's just a very, very cheap.
11:43Slapback sounding delay.
11:45Kind of like a cheap version of an MXR carbon copy.
11:49And I tried a few ones.
11:52And they were all too good sounding.
11:55And then I.
11:56And I think the Hoffner delay that I had before.
11:58I had two and they both broke.
12:00And I need to get a replacement.
12:03So I ordered all those pedals.
12:05And they all sounded too good.
12:07And then I ordered the bearing as well.
12:09Which is like literally.
12:10It's a plastic case.
12:11You know it's a plastic housing.
12:12I think it's like $30 or something.
12:15And.
12:16It's exactly what I want.
12:17It's just this like.
12:19Cheap sounding.
12:20Slapback.
12:21That's kind of like acting like a.
12:23Overdrive as well.
12:24So kind of like when I.
12:25You know.
12:26Need to go harder.
12:27I just.
12:28Activated it.
12:29It's kind of like a.
12:30Overdrive slash delay.
12:31Slapback thing.
12:32Very cool.
12:33Very cheap.
12:34Very cool.
12:35I'm going to buy like five.
12:36Because I'm expecting.
12:37That.
12:38There's going to be a lot of.
12:39Pedal breakage.
12:40Because they're like.
12:41Made of plastic.
12:42And look super cheap.
12:43And.
12:44I usually don't support.
12:45Bearing her.
12:46But this one's very good.
12:47Um.
12:48Then.
12:49Here.
12:50We've got.
12:51The.
12:52Boss.
12:53Arts.
12:54RC500.
12:55I think.
12:56Or 50.
12:57Something.
12:58It's just a looper pedal.
12:59Um.
13:00I used to have a very tiny one.
13:01That was just like.
13:02This size.
13:03But.
13:04Um.
13:05With our new setup.
13:06Um.
13:07I.
13:08Sometimes need to.
13:09Two loops at once.
13:10And it's very handy.
13:11That it has a stop button.
13:12Because usually.
13:13I had to like.
13:14Go on.
13:15It was just a one button.
13:16And.
13:17You know.
13:18It was very hard.
13:19To find the right.
13:20Moment.
13:21To kind of like.
13:22Click on the pedal.
13:23Because then like.
13:24Maybe.
13:25Two seconds later.
13:26It would stop the loop.
13:27And delete the loop.
13:28So.
13:29Yeah.
13:30It's just more handy.
13:31Um.
13:32And it's new as well.
13:33So.
13:34Yeah.
13:35One.
13:36Another thing is that.
13:37We connect it to MIDI.
13:39Steph uses the same pedal.
13:40For her bass.
13:41So sometimes.
13:42Because it's just a three piece.
13:43And we.
13:44Have some.
13:45You know.
13:46More.
13:47Um.
13:48Advanced.
13:49Uh.
13:50Arrangements.
13:51We sometimes have to kind of like.
13:52Cheat.
13:53To make it work.
13:54So.
13:55Sometimes I'll be like.
13:56I'd be looping here.
13:57And soloing over it.
13:58And then Steph loops.
13:59Her bass as well.
14:00And.
14:01Ivo plays something on drums.
14:02And it's very hard.
14:03To kind of.
14:04Keep two loops.
14:05Perfectly in sync.
14:06For.
14:07For a minute.
14:08I mean.
14:09It's practically.
14:10Impossible.
14:11We do it.
14:12If it's just one loop.
14:13And then the rest.
14:14Can adjust to it.
14:15So we.
14:16Found a way.
14:17To MIDI sync them.
14:18So.
14:19For those songs.
14:20Ivo.
14:21Triggers a MIDI click.
14:22On his.
14:23SPS X.
14:24That.
14:25Our loops are synced to.
14:26Loop the bass.
14:27Loop the guitar.
14:28And do something.
14:29Over it.
14:30Which is very handy.
14:31That's why we got.
14:32The new loopers.
14:33Here's my amp.
14:34That I actually.
14:35Just got today.
14:36And.
14:37To be perfectly honest.
14:38I'm not a hundred percent.
14:39Happy.
14:40I usually.
14:41Play a fender supersonic.
14:42For.
14:43Just use the clean channel.
14:44On the west coast run.
14:45I had a.
14:46Silver face.
14:47Deluxe reverb.
14:48Which is.
14:49Now.
14:50What I know.
14:51I need.
14:52I thought.
14:53I want a black face.
14:54But I want a silver face.
14:55Vintage channel.
14:56Here.
14:57We've got a black face.
14:58Deluxe reverb.
14:59Which is.
15:00Fine.
15:01But I think.
15:02There's something.
15:03About it.
15:04That I.
15:05It doesn't sound as warm.
15:06And as like.
15:07Um.
15:08Well.
15:09It sounds a little more.
15:10Like a twin reverb.
15:11Or something.
15:12A little more like.
15:13Mercury-ish.
15:14I.
15:15I kind of.
15:16Usually.
15:17I have it on.
15:18Two.
15:19Here.
15:20I have to go to.
15:21Three.
15:22More bass.
15:23And treble.
15:24Reverb.
15:25Is usually at.
15:26Four.
15:27And I don't use.
15:28The vibrato.
15:29So.
15:30Yeah.
15:31It's very basic.
15:32It's very based on.
15:33Dynamic playing.
15:34So.
15:35I'm.
15:36I'm just at.
15:37Breaking point.
15:38And when I like.
15:39Play harder.
15:40Then it goes into.
15:41More distorted.
15:42Kind of.
15:43Thing.
15:44That's kind of.
15:45Feel very static.
15:46Sometimes.
15:47Or distortion.
15:48Pedals.
15:49And here.
15:50It can like.
15:51Go from.
15:52Very clean.
15:53Things.
15:54That are.
15:55Also.
15:56Do a little bit.
15:57With the volume.
15:58On the guitar.
15:59To a very.
16:00Distorted sound.
16:01And.
16:02I'll get it from.
16:03Thunder instruments.
16:04So.
16:05Thank you for.
16:06Making great amps.
16:07And.
16:08To be very specific.
16:09Now.
16:10I also have a.
16:11Pick preference.
16:12Which is like.
16:13The Dunlop.
16:14But.
16:15They don't have like.
16:16That.
16:17Grip.
16:18Thing on it.
16:19And.
16:20It's really important.
16:21To me.
16:22Because.
16:23I sweat a lot.
16:24And.
16:25Yeah.
16:26So.
16:27It's kind of like.
16:28Soft.
16:29Picks.
16:30That's it.
16:31Yeah.
16:32They're great.
16:33They're cheap.
16:34That's why I use them.
16:35And.
16:36A lot of.
16:37Actually.
16:38I play with my hands.
16:39A lot.
16:40With my fingers.
16:41So.
16:42It's just like.
16:43Half of the songs.
16:44And.
16:45I've got a.
16:46Capo as well.
16:47Nothing special about it.
16:48Just a capo.
16:49Yeah.
16:50So.
16:51Thanks for following.
16:52Our.
16:53Rig.
16:54Rundown.
