00:00All over the world, species clash in nature's savage battle of survival.
00:12On land, under the sea, and in the air, all are locked in deadly conflict.
00:23For animals fight tooth and claw to win food, territory, and rights to the bloodline.
00:34From the coasts of South America to the African savannah, there are no rules.
00:43This is Animal Fight Club.
00:53A bachelor lion, driven by an urge as basic as hunger, on a mission to mate.
01:09His thick, dark mane signals high levels of testosterone.
01:20He's looking for his own pride of lionesses.
01:26And he lucks out.
01:29At night, this pride's dominant male goes hunting.
01:33Leaving a vacancy.
01:43The lionesses know he will kill their cubs.
01:49So he can create a bloodline of his own.
01:56This lioness is a real tiger moth.
01:59And she's not about to let that happen.
02:05This fully grown male is 400 pounds.
02:08One and a half times heavier than the lioness.
02:14What she lacks in weight, she makes up for in determination.
02:18The mom on a mission, leads the charge.
02:29Realizing one of their number is in danger, the pride rushes to her defense.
02:42The sisters do it for themselves, and their cubs.
02:51One lioness knocks the huge lion off his feet.
02:58The tiger mom aims a bite at the lion's throat.
03:02If she crushes his vital jugular vein, it could be fatal.
03:10But the lion stops the attack.
03:14To win this furious fight, the lionesses must keep the lion on the ground.
03:20They land bite after bite.
03:26One sinks her teeth into his vertebra.
03:32He's in danger of being paralyzed.
03:36The lion protects himself by sitting down.
03:41The male's only hope of victory is to break up the pride.
03:56He has a bone-crushing bite that exerts a pressure of a thousand pounds per square inch.
04:05His huge jaw muscles are attached to a raised ridge of bone on the top of his skull, giving him added crunch power.
04:16The canines are perfectly spaced, so they can slip between the cervical vertebra and sever a spinal cord.
04:23If he can land one devastating blow, the lionesses may back down.
04:39Females are ferocious when protecting their cubs, and they're not giving up.
04:48The females have shown this lion who's boss.
04:53Females are ferocious when protecting their cubs, and they're ferocious.
04:57Females are ferocious.
04:59Females are ferocious.
05:02Females are ferocious.
05:04Females are ferocious.
05:06Cross a protective mother, and you can expect a thrashing.
05:11But some mothers will defend more than their young.
05:18Defend more than their young.
05:19Defend more than their young.
05:24Jelada baboons live on the high mountain meadows of northern Ethiopia.
05:35They have the largest canine-to-body ratio of any mammal on the planet.
05:39the planet. This alpha male is head of his family. This is his turf. It's great being
05:56the daddy. A harem of four wives do most of the work looking after his young. But there
06:08are any number of bachelor boys desperate to take his place. So he's constantly playing
06:16defense. Today this bachelor gelada is single and ready to mingle. The crimson bleeding heart
06:31on his chest is redder than ever, showing hormones are pumping around his body.
06:38The message to the females? I heart you. At stake, the harem.
06:45The bachelor is on a mission, but he's not alone. He has his homies in tow.
07:07The daddy flips his upper lips over his nose, revealing those two-inch powerful canines.
07:20The message is clear. Come any closer to my family, and we're on.
07:32But the cocky bachelor keeps on coming.
07:35Time to show this upstart who's the daddy.
07:45He aims his two-inch canines into his enemy's face. A direct blow could gouge out his opponent's
08:01eyes and rip chunks out of him. The loser could end up with severe injuries he can't survive.
08:08It's a fast and frenzied encounter. With long and strong nails evolved to help them to rock climb,
08:19each gelada rains down lightning-quick claw attacks. Their thick, lush manes around their neck
08:27act as a defense. So both aim their blows at the less protected face.
08:34One clean strike will be like a pitchfork through the flesh.
08:38This young bachelor is too powerful, and the daddy knows it.
08:45The bachelor's band of brothers gives chase, and runs daddy out of town.
08:55It's regime change. The victorious bachelor thinks he's the daddy now, and claims his harem.
09:10He's taken down one fully grown male. But like so often, the wives have the final word.
09:23The females have no intention of mating with this imposter.
09:30The bachelor and his homies back off. Although he's a fighter, today, he's not a lover.
09:45The daddy may be a loser, but to them, he's still a winner.
09:52But another humiliating defeat, and he'll be given his marching orders by his wives.
09:57In nature, well-matched rivals often settle their differences with tooth and claw.
10:12But sometimes, nature throws up some incredible mismatches.
10:18Lions are the biggest, baddest predators in Africa.
10:22And one day, these four young lions in Kenya will be kings of the savannah.
10:29But right now, they're a bunch of unruly adolescents.
10:41They're getting to know their territory, finding out which neighbors are best avoided.
10:52This little punk thinks it's his neighborhood.
10:59The mongoose is known as third lightning, with good reason.
11:07These feisty fighters are famously resistant to venom, making them a snake's worst nightmare.
11:15At twenty inches in stature, this little punk is dwarfed by these lions.
11:34He's just five pounds.
11:37The lions are forty times his weight.
11:41And he's taking on all four of them.
11:45But what this manic mongoose lacks in height, he makes up in fight.
11:50He launches himself at his closest intruder.
11:56None of this is in the lion's playbook.
12:03You'd think any lion worth his salt would take this punk out.
12:10But something isn't right.
12:12It's possible this mongoose is diseased.
12:16Maybe even rabid.
12:21The mongoose may be going for gold.
12:23But you ain't seen nothing yet.
12:26Four young lions have walked right across this mongoose's home.
12:40He's mad as hell.
12:42And he's not going to take it anymore.
12:45Does he run?
12:48Does he hide?
12:49Does he hell?
12:55Jumping into the air, he lands a blow right on this lion's nose.
13:00It doesn't matter how big you are.
13:02That's gotta hurt.
13:04The mongoose has forty teeth, specially evolved to rip apart flesh.
13:14Four carnassials work together fast.
13:17And cut like a scissor, constantly moving, which shears flesh apart.
13:23With a bite force, which can rip through a man's finger.
13:27So pound for pound, his bite is more mighty than a fully grown lion.
13:39His shot wins him a vital few seconds.
13:43He retreats to his corner.
13:47Maybe the little punk has learned his lesson.
13:56But that was just round one.
14:03If the lion can just land one blow, it will surely be a knockout.
14:08Now the overconfident mongoose makes his first error.
14:18Opening himself up to a left hook.
14:23It's a heavy blow.
14:29Luckily for the mongoose, the claws were retracted.
14:32But the powerful shot seems to have finally brought him to his senses.
14:40He makes a run for it.
14:42This time, heading for the hills.
14:47It's going to be a while before these lions earn their crown.
14:57One animal challenges the lion like no other.
15:00The hyena.
15:03Africa's Kalahari Desert.
15:05It's the dry season.
15:07And prey is in short supply.
15:12This solitary brown hyena is a killing machine.
15:16He can crush bones, skulls and hooves.
15:22But he's starving.
15:25The hyena takes a huge risk and leaves the protection of his own clan.
15:30And he's trespassing into a rival's territory.
15:35He picks up the scent of a carcass.
15:39But it's been claimed by this pride of lions.
15:47He knows approaching the carcass would be like signing his own death warrant.
15:51The dry season has been tough on the pride, too.
15:52In any one day, a hungry lion can eat a fifth of its own body weight.
16:00By nightfall, the lions have had their fill.
16:05He moves in.
16:06But now, there's another hyena.
16:07And he's the homeboy.
16:08This is his territory.
16:09His feast.
16:10No way is he sharing it.
16:11No way is he sharing it.
16:15Our lone bandit hyena is on death row.
16:16And this could be the last decision he ever made.
16:17This is his territory.
16:18But now, there's another hyena.
16:19And he's the homeboy.
16:20This is his territory.
16:21His feast.
16:22His feast.
16:27No way is he sharing it.
16:37Our lone bandit hyena is on death row.
16:41And this could be the last decision he ever makes.
16:45The homeboy aims for the bandit's legs.
16:57If he's crippled, the bandit will be easy meat for the neighborhood lion pride.
17:04This homeboy is fired up as every hair on his back is raised.
17:10He attempts to sink his canines into the bandit's spinal column.
17:17However, a born scrapper, the bandit, blocks the attack.
17:26Their powerful jaws are packed with over 30 teeth.
17:29These include inch-long canines, perfect for ripping flesh.
17:34And their premolars are flattened and enlarged,
17:37acting like hammers to pound and pulverize.
17:42Supported by powerful neck and shoulder muscles,
17:44he can bite through iron bars.
17:52Both hyenas go for the vulnerable part of the neck.
17:55The homeboy gets the bandit down on the ground.
18:06He could easily crush his windpipe or snap his neck.
18:12The bandit plays submissive.
18:22But it's a ruse.
18:28He retaliates, aiming for the homeboy's neck.
18:32But the homeboy's only going to be fooled once.
18:39He's had total domination.
18:43He goes for annihilation.
18:46Exhausted and starving, the bandit is all but dead.
18:51Then, a lucky break.
18:55The homeboy repositions his grip to get a deeper fight.
18:59It's the half-second the bandit needs to make a run for it.
19:05There are no free lunches.
19:09Sometimes it's not just the fight that's lethal, but where it takes place.
19:20Yellowstone.
19:22Two million acres of wilderness.
19:25It's the Wild West.
19:28As temperatures drop, tensions rise.
19:33For the bighorn sheep, it's the mating season.
19:36This old ram is king of the hill.
19:41But he's picking up the scent of a young gunslinger.
19:47Who wants mating rights for his bloodline.
19:51And this 800-foot ravine ain't big enough for the both of them.
19:58It's the good, the bad, and no doubt it'll be ugly.
20:04If the old ram loses the fight, he'll lose breeding rights.
20:12Miss out this time, and he may never mate again.
20:17The old bull charges.
20:19The impact rings out as loud as a gunshot.
20:27Adult male horns are made of bone covered in keratin and weigh 30 pounds.
20:35The force of the impact is delivered at over 20 miles an hour.
20:39Enough to kill a human.
20:40But bighorn sheep have two layers of skull protecting their brain.
20:47Controlling the higher ground is crucial.
20:53The challenger attacks.
20:56But misses.
20:57The older male takes his eye off the game.
21:03Big mistake.
21:06The challenger charges.
21:09And gives the old bull a butt in the butt.
21:12Both rams are fired up and ready to go again.
21:21One will be king.
21:24One will be gone.
21:26High noon in Yellowstone.
21:36Two testosterone-fueled bighorn sheep are shooting it out.
21:42Near the top of an 800-foot drop.
21:51They're playing with mutual destruction.
21:58The older male is getting the upper hand.
22:06And shunts his foe downhill.
22:09On a steep gradient, a buck can plummet to his death.
22:15The challenger has to run for it.
22:22But the older male doesn't want to quit while he's ahead.
22:26He wants to send a signal to any other cocksure gunslingers.
22:31And finish what he started.
22:32Down on gentler slopes, it's round two.
22:39But this time, the old-timer has overreached.
22:53He has to throw in the towel.
23:00Spent, he walks away.
23:04He wanted to finish his rival off.
23:09But he's the one who's finished.
23:11His rival has passed one of nature's harshest tests.
23:17He's the toughest, roughest ram on the rock.
23:20On the savannah, deadly danger lurks everywhere.
23:30Especially where the trees dot the scrub.
23:35A perfect place for a solitary assassin.
23:38The leopard.
23:46At 130 pounds, a full-grown female leopard is around a third the size of a lioness.
23:55But pound for pound, the leopard is one of the strongest of the big cats.
23:59And here in South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique, there's a rich supply of four-legged cat food.
24:13But a thriving population means adult siblings will never be far apart.
24:21And leopards are loners.
24:26And fiercely territorial.
24:29This female has more reason than most to want to keep her territory to herself.
24:39She's a new mom with a young cub.
24:44She'll spend her next two years as a dedicated mother.
24:48Providing for and protecting her child.
24:54But there's another childless female in the neighborhood.
25:00The intruder picks up the mother's scent.
25:03She seems familiar.
25:06Her younger sister.
25:09The leopards share the same mother.
25:15But this intruder's a half-sister from a different litter.
25:20In this case, family ties count for nothing.
25:28She's marched into her sister's territory.
25:33In open ground, they come face to face.
25:40Mom's not looking for trouble.
25:43But big sister is aching for a fight.
25:47Leopards can run at over 30 miles per hour.
25:56Her 130-pound frame slams into the mom.
26:01It's a tumbling fur ball of fury.
26:07The mom lands on her haunches.
26:11Lightning fast, she's slammed down her rival.
26:16Her left paw fends off the sister's counter.
26:21She bears canines over one inch long.
26:29She's fiercer, faster, and ready to kill.
26:33Mom's in total control.
26:38Her siblings' fury turns to fear.
26:41Beaten, she has to leave and keep her distance.
26:48Mom's message to any other sisters?
26:51Don't mess with me.
26:55From the open savannah to a bunch of daisies.
27:00These beautiful flowers are the scene of a lethal encounter.
27:04This monkey beetle is warming himself in these closed daisy petals.
27:15As Romeo pollinates each flower in turn,
27:19he senses the pheromones from a potential mate.
27:27And heads over to Juliet's daisy.
27:30But trouble turns up.
27:34A rival monkey beetle.
27:38The rival suitor flies up to join them.
27:42A monkey beetle is one of the few insects that can see red.
27:47That's certainly the case now.
27:50Juliet is fussy.
27:52She will only mate inside the daisy.
27:55And only with the winner.
27:57A monkey beetle can lift around ten times its body weight.
28:03They have movable and unequally sized tarsal claws.
28:08One stronger and one weaker.
28:10Their large hind legs are specially adapted just for fighting their rivals.
28:16So they can guard their chosen one.
28:18Two Romeo monkey beetles are fighting for the right to party with their Juliet in this daisy.
28:32The battling beetles bounce Juliet out of the love nest.
28:36Unaware, they fight over nothing.
28:38The rival suitor finds himself hanging on...
28:40By a claw.
28:41The victor thinks he has it all.
28:42The victor thinks he has it all.
28:44Only to find out Juliet has left the scene.
28:45Romeo picks up Juliet's pheromone trail.
28:46Romeo picks up Juliet's pheromone trail.
28:47Romeo picks up Juliet's pheromone trail.
28:49The rival suitor finds himself hanging on...
28:51The rival suitor finds himself hanging on...
28:53By a claw.
28:55The victor thinks he has it all.
28:58The victor thinks he has it all.
29:01Only to find out Juliet has left the scene.
29:07Romeo picks up Juliet's pheromone trail.
29:10Romeo picks up Juliet's pheromone trail.
29:19All's well that ends well.
29:25Here's an immovable object.
29:29Here's an irresistible force.
29:32In South Africa, two irritable bulls lock horns over prime real estate.
29:44What's the beat?
29:46The only watering hole around.
29:50There's only one thing more deadly than an angry white rhino.
29:55Two going head to head.
30:0210,000 pounds of armored muscle between them.
30:08Tooled up with more than 12 feet of killer weaponry.
30:15White rhino bites are often deadly.
30:19Deaths from wounds inflicted by other rhinos are commonplace.
30:26Rhinos are highly territorial.
30:29They want a place
30:31with good grazing
30:35and preferably
30:39no other rhinos.
30:44Neither of these two powerhouses are backing down.
30:48There's too much at stake.
30:52They're ready to rumble.
30:53The old brown bull weighs up the challenger.
31:04He's younger
31:05and smaller.
31:07He should be a pushover.
31:13The old bull rams home his size advantage,
31:17getting Junior into reverse gear.
31:19When push comes to shove,
31:25Junior is forced to eat dirt.
31:31Stumbling, he turns his side to his more experienced opponent.
31:37Risking a horn,
31:39gouging his neck.
31:41Where the skin is thinner than the rest of his one-inch body armor.
31:45But Junior gets out of the jam.
31:57The two weigh up their next move
32:00with some horn fencing.
32:04The old-timer lunges forward
32:06and hooks his horn
32:07under Junior's neck.
32:11Junior's dancing with death.
32:13Again.
32:13His high takes a hiding.
32:23The bigger bull has the power
32:25to lift his 5,000-pound opponent
32:28off the ground.
32:31Making him
32:32the boss of the watering hole
32:35for now.
32:37And Junior
32:38is run out of town.
32:39The Falkland Islands
32:42in the South Atlantic.
32:44Harsh,
32:45desolate,
32:46and mostly frigid.
32:50Finding food
32:51a challenge.
32:53But luckily,
33:00the striated Karakara
33:02isn't fussy.
33:04These keen-eyed scavengers
33:05will scour the coastline
33:07and will eat almost anything.
33:16Dead
33:17or alive.
33:18But when these angry birds
33:23take on each other,
33:25feathers will fly.
33:27The angriest bird
33:38in the South Atlantic.
33:40The striated Karakara.
33:44Nicknamed Johnny Rooks,
33:46it's a name for a thief.
33:48And the shoe fits.
33:50Johnny Rooks,
33:50armed with talons.
33:55Perfect for gripping the turf.
33:58The local Rockhopper penguin eggs
34:01provide good protein.
34:05Better still,
34:06they wait till the young
34:08have hatched.
34:09So the Johnny Rooks
34:11aren't exactly popular
34:13with the local penguin population.
34:14This is a gang
34:19of juvenile Johnny Rooks.
34:21Big enough
34:21to terrorize everyone.
34:25Including the local
34:26tourist population.
34:29Egging each other on,
34:31these rebels raise hell.
34:35Next stop on spring break,
34:38the beach.
34:40It's bad news
34:41when this posse
34:42moves into your hood.
34:44But there's one thing
34:49worse than these
34:50juvenile delinquents.
34:52And that's
34:53an adult delinquent
34:55Johnny Rook.
34:57They're on his turf.
35:01The biggest,
35:03baddest Rook on the Rock
35:04wants to show
35:05these youngsters
35:06who's boss.
35:08And steal
35:09their penguin carcass.
35:11It should be
35:12a win-win situation.
35:14But the gang
35:17sticks it to the man.
35:21The old stager
35:23targets the
35:23brashest
35:24of the bunch.
35:34The adult
35:35wants to take
35:36the cocky youngster
35:37down the pecking order.
35:38Then a buddy
35:45joins the old-timer.
35:52The two of them
35:53put an end
35:55to this frat party.
36:02On his back,
36:03the gang leader
36:04is in trouble.
36:08The adult
36:10has a choice.
36:11Teach a lesson
36:12or break his neck.
36:18Running out of options,
36:20the only way
36:22is up.
36:24The young punk
36:25is in luck.
36:25The rest of the mob
36:28follows suit.
36:35And the winners?
36:37They enjoy
36:38a good crow
36:39before eating
36:42the rest
36:43of the carcass.
36:47All that's left
36:48for the young
36:48motley crew
36:49some humble pie.
36:55From deadly talons
36:56to killer antlers
36:59and death
37:00by skewer
37:01is never pretty.
37:05High in the
37:06rocky mountains
37:06of North America,
37:09this bugle call
37:13from this
37:13nine-foot-tall
37:14male elk
37:15says he's
37:16ready to rumble.
37:17The big chief
37:22wants to keep
37:23this harem
37:24of females.
37:28But there's
37:29a new elk
37:30in town
37:31who thinks
37:33otherwise.
37:41Each bull antlers
37:42weigh as much
37:43as 40 pounds
37:44and grow
37:45to a length
37:46of more than
37:46four feet
37:47armed with
37:49around a dozen
37:50jagged spears.
37:52They're as tough
37:53as cast iron
37:54but packed
37:56with collagen.
37:58A fibrous tissue
37:59that's strong
38:00and flexible.
38:01They're perfectly
38:02designed to absorb
38:03the force
38:04of repeated
38:04collision.
38:08Their antlers
38:09are virtually
38:10unbreakable
38:11but it comes
38:13at a cost.
38:14calcium and phosphorus
38:18used to strengthen
38:19the horns
38:20leaves their skeleton
38:21depleted
38:22and their bones
38:25easier to break.
38:27to triumph
38:32to triumph
38:32in this showdown
38:33you need brains
38:35brawn
38:36and guts
38:36or you'll be
38:38spilling them
38:38to triumph
38:39in this showdown
38:40you need brains
38:41brawn
38:42and guts
38:43or you'll be
38:44spilling them
38:45all over
38:46the floor.
38:52Two bully-grown
38:54elks
38:54are duking it out.
38:58Each is trying
39:00to break their
39:00opponent's neck.
39:06With skeletons
39:07depleted of calcium
39:08bones can break
39:10easily
39:10the exhausted
39:15challenger
39:16finally gives up
39:17but as he runs
39:20he exposes
39:21his vulnerable
39:22rear
39:23and the big chief
39:25can't resist
39:25the stab
39:26it could lame him
39:29it's a hit
39:30but not
39:32a critical one
39:33job done
39:36for now
39:38victory
39:46usually goes
39:47to the mighty
39:48but sometimes
39:50to get the upper hand
39:52you have to fight
39:53dirty
39:54back in the 19th century
40:01a camel train
40:02was the only way
40:03to cross the desert
40:04here in
40:05Molga country
40:06western Australia
40:07able to carry
40:11a load
40:12that would break
40:12a horse's back
40:13but when the real
40:16trains came
40:17the camels
40:18were abandoned
40:19they went
40:22forth
40:22prospered
40:24and multiplied
40:25with no natural
40:28predators
40:29to worry about
40:30dromedary camels
40:31live in perfect
40:33harmony
40:33except
40:40in the breeding
40:41season
40:42when vicious
40:44fights
40:44break out
40:45over the females
40:46when the male
40:51dromedary
40:52reaches sexual
40:53maturity
40:53rising testosterone
40:55levels
40:56cause him to
40:57develop a doula
40:58a sack
41:00like inflatable
41:01extension
41:02of the soft
41:03palate
41:03in camel world
41:07this is a good
41:09look
41:10they literally
41:12foam at the
41:13mouth
41:13they stink
41:15and they use
41:17their spit
41:18to make a low
41:19gurgling sound
41:20their mating call
41:22forever blowing
41:25bubbles
41:25not subtle
41:26but the cows
41:28know where they
41:28stand
41:29this looker
41:33is king
41:33of the outback
41:34he has
41:38twenty females
41:39he can mate
41:40with
41:40the old timer
41:46lets the youngster
41:47know
41:48he's up for it
41:49it's
41:51Aussie rules
41:52in this case
41:54that means
41:55no rules
41:56the old timer
41:58kicks off
41:59hoping to puncture
42:00his rival's doula
42:02a damaged doula
42:05can stop air
42:06getting in
42:07and can even
42:08cause starvation
42:09as the camel
42:10can no longer
42:11eat or drink
42:12the bull's
42:16thirty four teeth
42:17are formidable
42:18weapons
42:18his sharp
42:21canines
42:22are one and a half
42:23inches long
42:24and can inflict
42:25serious damage
42:26in his enemy's flesh
42:27once they grip
42:29hold of their opponent
42:29they use their
42:31three and a half foot
42:32long necks
42:32like a lever
42:33ripping flesh
42:34and inflicting
42:35deep wounds
42:37but the young bull
42:42is wise
42:43to this move
42:44and goes
42:45for the old timer's
42:46head
42:47and the young bull
42:52has another
42:53trick
42:54he lifts
42:57the old timer
42:58up
42:59to slam
43:00dunk him
43:00onto the floor
43:02the young bull's
43:05tactics are simple
43:06but deadly

43:09half a ton frame
43:10on top of him
43:11his sternum
43:14has a large
43:15square pedestal
43:16made of keratin
43:17he'll use it
43:19to crush his
43:19opponent's head
43:20with his chest
43:21this isn't the most
43:25dignified position
43:26to find yourself in
43:27but make no mistake
43:30this bull
43:32is holding on
43:33for dear life
43:34if he topples
43:36it's game over
43:38having taught
43:40the old guy
43:41a lesson
43:42the youngster
43:43lets him go
43:44outsmarted
43:47the old timer
43:48goes walkabout
43:49and unlike

43:55he'll be coming back
43:57he'll be coming back
43:58he'll be coming back
