00:00All right guys, today we're going to talk about the importance of doing pre-purchase inspections
00:04for all you techs out there and for all you DIYers and for all you car shoppers.
00:09Let's get into it.
00:14This is a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, 3.8 liter, 212,000 miles on it.
00:17So it does have some miles on this thing.
00:20We have no idea what this man's paying for this vehicle.
00:22But if we look at it, you know, you're walking on the car lot,
00:25you're going to check this thing out, you know,
00:28looks nice, paints in decent shape, right?
00:33Don't see tires or really good shape.
00:35You know, it's a clean truck.
00:38You're looking at it.
00:39Interior is good.
00:43Yeah, nice two-tone seats and just overall,
00:47this vehicle looks like it's really locked,
00:50but it looks like a good vehicle, right?
00:52I mean, you don't see anything that just stands out that says,
00:56oh my gosh, this thing's just been, you know,
00:58rode hard and put away wet.
00:59It doesn't look like that.
01:01But, and unfortunately, this is a post-purchase inspection.
01:06So this client has already purchased this Jeep
01:09and then brought it to us for us to look it over.
01:12And we're going to go over some things that we found on this thing.
01:14And one of the things is a noise,
01:15and that's going to be the big kicker.
01:17So we're going to, let's look at some other things first though.
01:20We've got the vehicle up in the air.
01:21We're going to look at the underside of this thing.
01:22We've already done the full inspection on this vehicle.
01:24So we already know everything that's going on with it.
01:27But we want to show you why it's so important to do this
01:29and how quickly things add up
01:31and why it's much cheaper in the long run
01:34to pay a shop, to do a thorough inspection on it.
01:37So you can avoid, I mean, even if you want to buy the vehicle,
01:40even if you end up saying, well, I want the vehicle,
01:42you can use whatever, you know,
01:44whatever work needs to be done as a bargaining chip.
01:46Very few vehicles are going to come in here and not need something.
01:49I mean, if it's a used vehicle for sale,
01:51I mean, if it's got 20-something thousand miles on it, maybe.
01:53But let me give you a quick story about a 25,000 mile vehicle
01:55that was brought in to me.
01:57This has been several years ago.
01:59And the vehicle was brought in.
02:01It was a newer Mazda.
02:03I said, it only had like 25,000 miles on it.
02:05It was a burnt orange color.
02:07It was a teenage girl that was buying it.
02:09The mom was bringing it in.
02:10So they both came in.
02:11They were sitting in the lobby
02:12and just wanted us to look it over, you know, smartly
02:15because the car from the outside looked pristine.
02:18Like I said, 25K on this thing.
02:20Looked pristine.
02:20I'm like, what are we going to find on this car?
02:22We put it up in the air.
02:22It looked like this car had been broken in half
02:24and welded back together.
02:26It was literally welds in the middle of this car.
02:28It was just, I mean, I immediately lowered it down.
02:31I thought the car was going to break in two pieces.
02:32So, you know, the girl was obviously very upset.
02:35She really loved the car.
02:36It was a pretty car.
02:37But that's a perfect example.
02:38Even if it's got low miles,
02:40didn't have anything on the report or anything on that.
02:43There was no indication that this car had ever been in a wreck
02:45and it was in a bad shape.
02:47So let's look at this one.
02:48So right off the bat, we come under
02:49and we can see we've got a leak here at our gearbox.
02:54So the lower seal on the gearbox is leaking.
02:56Years ago, we would replace that seal.
02:58These days, you replace the gearbox
03:00and it's hard to get a good quality gearbox.
03:02So that's going to need to be done one way or the other.
03:05And, you know, it's not inexpensive to do.
03:08We don't have to come far.
03:09We've got a pinion seal leaking.
03:12Again, not a major repair.
03:14This one is going to be a lot less expensive than that.
03:17This one, we can just put a seal in it.
03:18But, you know, it's work that's got to be done.
03:20It's going to add up.
03:22We come up under here
03:23and we can see we've got oil leaking
03:27and it's all on this pan right here.
03:30Now, and if we come on this side,
03:32you can see the same thing.
03:33There is oil right up here.
03:35I don't know if you can see that without light.
03:37Maybe you can, if I can put some light.
03:41But there's oil all back up in this area.
03:46It's hard to see it,
03:47but that oil is coming from the valve cover.
03:49Take a look at this.
03:51That's coolant, right?
03:53That's coolant leaking.
03:55And that coolant is leaking
03:57from behind that timing cover,
04:00way up, way up top up here.
04:03and you can see there's a seal up there
04:07where the timing cover bolts to the engine block
04:10that is leaking coolant.
04:12I mean, that is a pretty major repair,
04:16the whole front of that.
04:17That's going to require removing the oil pan.
04:19So there's the oil pan coming off of it
04:21and taking the timing cover off to do that
04:23just to fix a coolant leak.
04:25That's major.
04:26Now we're really starting to add up, right?
04:29So rest of it going back,
04:31pretty decent,
04:32no major issues.
04:33I mean, it's not rusty or anything,
04:35you know, just a little surface.
04:36I mean, definitely not.
04:37This is a clean vehicle as far as that goes.
04:39You know, overall,
04:42as far as body and frame
04:45and, you know, suspension stuff,
04:47I mean, it needs,
04:48it's going to need shocks on it.
04:50It's got 200 some thousand miles on this thing.
04:52So these are going to need to be replaced.
04:53That's just maintenance.
04:54That's just maintenance.
04:55So we don't really hold that against the vehicle,
04:57but it is going to be a cost
04:58that's going to need to be,
04:59you know, going to be incurred.
05:01And the front end,
05:03we did shake the front end down.
05:05We're going to get the tires off this thing in a minute.
05:06Tires and wheels off in this thing a minute.
05:07I'm going to show you the brakes on it.
05:09We can't get all four of them off
05:11because the one back,
05:12the rear driver's rear
05:13has got a strip stud,
05:15so it won't come off.
05:16So there's going to be some involvement
05:17in getting that off.
05:19So we're going to look at the brakes
05:20when I show you what we found there,
05:21but let's lower it down.
05:23The rest of the front end is in tight shape,
05:25but let's lower it down.
05:25Let's take a look at these ball joints.
05:27We're down here checking the ball joints
05:28and ball joints are not inexpensive either.
05:31I mean, all this stuff is going to add up.
05:33I want you guys to look right here.
05:34Watch this point right here
05:36and you're going to see this ball joint
05:38move up and down, right?
05:39So you'll see the play in it.
05:42and it's the top one
05:50and the bottom one
05:50the same way.
05:52So this one up here
05:53is doing exactly the same thing.
05:58So that's got play in the ball joints.
06:01Okay.
06:04Come over to the other side.
06:05That one's even worse.
06:16It's even got side-to-side play on that one.
06:22Let me see if I can't slow it down.
06:24You're looking at the top.
06:26There you go.
06:26Let's hit up there.
06:28Yeah.
06:29You can see up.
06:31Right.
06:32Yep.
06:32You got it?
06:32Okay.
06:33Watch.
06:33Yeah.
06:35That's a lot of play there.
06:36Right?
06:37So it needs all
06:39needs all four ball joints.
06:41Again,
06:42that's
06:43not going to be inexpensive.
06:46You know?
06:46So I'm not saying
06:47it's not worth it to do it
06:48but we haven't even got
06:49to the big one yet.
06:50We're only going to show you
06:51one front,
06:52one rear.
06:53Word of caution
06:54or advice
06:55or however you want to take this.
06:57When you're doing these inspections
06:58all four wheels need to come off.
07:00Now we can't get that one off
07:02because of the stud
07:03that's messed up on it
07:04or lug nut and stud
07:05that's messed up on it.
07:07But we already know
07:08it's going to need work there
07:09and we already know
07:09what the other side needs.
07:12If you only pull off
07:13and I've seen people do this
07:14when they do brake inspections,
07:16right?
07:16They'll pull off
07:17one front,
07:17one rear.
07:18Well,
07:19I mean,
07:19that's great and wonderful
07:20until you pull this one off
07:22and it looks fine
07:23and then you,
07:24you know,
07:24that one over there
07:24is metal to metal
07:25because you've got a bound up caliper
07:26or hose that's bad
07:27or slides that are bad,
07:28something like that.
07:29So not only do you need
07:30to have all four wheels off of,
07:31you need to look at all the pads,
07:33so both pads on all the wheels
07:35so that you know that,
07:36you know,
07:37one on the outside,
07:38some people will look through the wheel
07:38and go,
07:39oh,
07:39that looks really good,
07:40right?
07:40But then the inside one
07:41will be bad
07:42or vice versa.
07:43So I'll look at it
07:44from the inside
07:45and see all that inside one's good
07:46but you can't see
07:47the outside one's bad.
07:48Do a thorough inspection
07:49on these things.
07:50So in this case,
07:51let's take a look
07:52at the brakes on this.
07:53We're going to see
07:53that these are worn way down.
07:57I mean,
07:57they're almost metal to metal.
08:00If we come on the inside over there,
08:02let the camera get in there.
08:03Let me look through the camera,
08:04hopefully,
08:05and I can see
08:05maybe throw some light on there.
08:08But this one is the same way,
08:10almost metal to metal,
08:11right?
08:12So it's going to need brakes now.
08:13So it needs,
08:14it needs brake pads.
08:15It's going to need rotors
08:16when you do that.
08:18This side's the same way.
08:19We come back here.
08:21Let me show you
08:22what we found on this one.
08:23Now,
08:23the rear brakes
08:24don't generally,
08:25you know,
08:25they tend to last
08:26a little longer.
08:28You know,
08:28they can get a little bit thinner
08:29just simply because
08:31they don't do as much work.
08:34So they do tend to last
08:35a little bit longer.
08:36Now,
08:36look at what's amazing
08:37on this one is
08:38it looks like it's the factory.
08:40Like these have never been off
08:41because these clips
08:42are put on at the factory
08:43when they put these rotors on
08:45to hold the rotors on
08:46as it's going down
08:46the assembly line.
08:48So these brakes
08:49have never been done,
08:50which is actually
08:51not a bad sign,
08:52except that
08:53if you look at it,
08:55you can see that
08:55the top part of the pad
08:56up here,
08:57which is right inside this,
08:58is thicker than the bottom
09:00part of the pad
09:00right there,
09:01right?
09:02So it's going to need
09:04brakes on this anyway.
09:05I mean,
09:06they're really,
09:07really thin,
09:07but when we see it,
09:08basically,
09:09it's worn at an angle,
09:10right?
09:11So that means that
09:12you've got more than likely
09:14either a slide
09:15is being bound up
09:17or on the anti-rattle clips,
09:20which you can see right here,
09:20you can see there's a lot
09:21of rust build up on it,
09:22right?
09:23So on the anti-rattle clips,
09:24see if we can get light,
09:25good.
09:27You know,
09:27they're binding up the pad,
09:28one or the other.
09:29So it's going to need brakes.
09:31Again,
09:32by itself,
09:33not a big deal.
09:34It needs brakes,
09:35right?
09:35But you start adding that up
09:37with everything else,
09:38it starts to really start
09:40to snowball on us.
09:41So now let's look
09:42at the really big one.
09:44So let's lower this thing down
09:45and show you guys the,
09:48or let you listen
09:49to the major problem with this.
09:53We've got Dustin in here.
09:54We're going to start this engine up
09:55and want you to hear the noise
09:56that's happening inside this engine.
09:59And then we're going to show you
10:00the really bad part of this.
10:02So go ahead and start it up.
10:05So rattling like crazy.
10:16Sounds like upper engine noise.
10:19So it could just be a lifter
10:20or something like that, right?
10:21But we took it a step further
10:23just to be sure.
10:23Go ahead and shut it off.
10:26Thank you, Dustin.
10:27Let's look and see.
10:30Eric went a little step further,
10:32pulled the filter off of it,
10:34cut the filter open
10:36so we could look inside.
10:37And if we look here,
10:38I don't know if it's going
10:39to show up on camera,
10:40but there is a ton of metal
10:42in that filter.
10:44So that is,
10:47I mean, if this thing
10:48has a worn camshaft
10:51or maybe a lifter went bad
10:53and it's beating a camshaft up
10:55and the metal's coming off the camshaft,
10:57could you put a camshaft
10:58in this thing possibly
10:59and some lifters in it
11:00to get it to quiet down?
11:01Maybe.
11:02But the reality is
11:03that metal has,
11:04you know,
11:04been introduced into that engine
11:06and it's going to have
11:07caused other issues in there.
11:08And that's going to be
11:09a lot of money
11:09you're going to spend
11:10on putting,
11:12first of all,
11:13getting in there,
11:13inspecting.
11:14Valve cover's coming off of it.
11:15Needs valve cover gas.
11:16It's okay.
11:17But finding out
11:18what's wrong with it
11:19and then if it needs camshafts,
11:21which is more than likely
11:21shown by this metal,
11:23probably,
11:24you put camshaft in it,
11:25you put lifters in it,
11:26then you got to pull
11:26the timing cover off of it.
11:27You got to pull
11:28the oil pan off of it
11:29to do that.
11:29Now you're in the timing cover area,
11:31200,000 miles,
11:32112,000 miles on it,
11:33probably putting a chain in there.
11:35So you're just,
11:36this thing's just racking up,
11:37racking up, racking up
11:37just on the engine part of it.
11:40Now,
11:40you know,
11:41we could get into,
11:42of course,
11:42we're going to prioritize
11:43everything for them.
11:44The gearbox is not
11:46a massive leak.
11:47So that's something
11:47that he could put off.
11:48You don't have to do that
11:49to make this vehicle
11:50a viable,
11:51drivable vehicle.
11:52Something you need to have
11:53in the back of your,
11:54you know,
11:54back of your head there
11:55and be looking in,
11:56you know,
11:56be looking at doing that later.
11:57Brakes obviously have to be done.
11:59Ball joints,
11:59to me,
12:00that's a safety thing.
12:01I would do the ball joints.
12:03The,
12:03you know,
12:05the,
12:05the pinion seal,
12:06you know,
12:07that keep,
12:07put some fluid in it.
12:08You might get by a little bit,
12:09a little while for that.
12:10That's a pretty good,
12:11pretty good leak.
12:11It looks like there,
12:12but all this stuff,
12:13huh?
12:16That's not a really expensive repair
12:17right there,
12:18just to go ahead and knock it out.
12:19The gearbox is kind of
12:19an expensive repair.
12:21That's why I say
12:21we can maybe put that off
12:22and it's a less of a leak.
12:24But in the end of the day,
12:25all this stuff,
12:26when we do a,
12:27when we do a pre-purchase
12:28or in this case,
12:29a post-purchase,
12:30we would,
12:31we put all of it together.
12:33We,
12:33we,
12:33we present everything
12:34just like we do
12:35on every inspection.
12:36We present it all to the client
12:37and let them know
12:38these are the things we found.
12:39And there's things,
12:40like I say,
12:40that we would,
12:41you know,
12:42count kind of
12:43against the vehicle.
12:45So,
12:45I mean,
12:46obviously engine noise,
12:46things like that.
12:47That's,
12:47that's probably going to be,
12:48you know,
12:49a cut and dry deal.
12:50You know,
12:51brakes,
12:51they've got,
12:52those got to be done.
12:53If it's coming in here,
12:54like just got 212,000 miles on it.
12:55We're not really going to mess
12:56with fluid service
12:56and stuff on here.
12:57But let's say it comes in here
12:58with 75,000 miles on it.
13:00Fluid services are due soon.
13:01They did some,
13:01but they're due soon.
13:03You know,
13:03don't really count that against it.
13:04We just let them know,
13:05hey,
13:05those are going to be coming up
13:06down the road
13:06just so they have an idea
13:08that they will be spending
13:08a little bit more money,
13:09you know,
13:10maybe at 90,000 or something.
13:11So,
13:12but in this case,
13:13this probably,
13:16don't know what he spent
13:16on the vehicle.
13:17Don't know what he's,
13:18you know,
13:19looking to put into it.
13:20We'll present everything to him.
13:21but probably this would have been,
13:23would have been a,
13:24you know,
13:24present this to the client.
13:25He probably went,
13:26eh,
13:26maybe we could get
13:26something better out there.
13:29Clean vehicle overall,
13:30but obviously engine issues.
13:31Got 212,000 miles on it.
13:34You know,
13:34probably doesn't owe anybody anything.
13:35212,000 miles on a Chrysler product
13:37with 3,
13:37you know,
13:373.8 liter in these things.
13:39But,
13:40you know,
13:40the really bad part is
13:42that this was purchased,
13:43just purchased.
13:44And now you kind of,
13:46where do you do with it?
13:47Right?
13:47I mean,
13:47you're going to try to sell it
13:48the way it is
13:49or are you going to,
13:51you know,
13:51start investing a bunch of money into it?
13:53Because you're almost,
13:54either way,
13:55you're going to be,
13:56you're going to take a hit
13:57in the pocketbook,
13:58unfortunately.
13:59So we've got a little more information
14:00and the client says that
14:02the previous owner
14:02had an engine put in this
14:04in July of 24.
14:06So this is early February of 25.
14:08So,
14:09you know,
14:09six,
14:09seven months ago,
14:10seven months ago.
14:11And there's supposed to be
14:13some kind of warranty on it.
14:14So hopefully,
14:15don't have any clue
14:16how that's going to work out,
14:17but hopefully somebody will take care
14:18of this engine for him.
14:19So he won't have to take that hit.
14:20And,
14:20you know,
14:21that would cover,
14:22they do it,
14:22that covers the timing cover,
14:24that covers the valve covers,
14:26that covers obviously the engine noise.
14:27So all that stuff,
14:28hopefully,
14:28would just be covered in that warranty.
14:30And then he's just got
14:31the other things that we talked about,
14:32the brakes,
14:33the ball joints,
14:33and,
14:34you know,
14:34the other stuff that needed to be done on it.
14:35So hopefully,
14:37this is going to be,
14:37will turn out okay for him.
14:39So appreciate you guys watching this one.
14:41You know,
14:41I cannot stress the importance
14:43of just preaching
14:45to the top of the mountains
14:46that do pre-purchase inspections.
14:49It doesn't matter
14:50how many miles are on it.
14:51It doesn't matter
14:52how old it is
14:53or how new it is.
14:54Just have it done,
14:55pay to have it done,
14:56have a quality one done,
14:57have a thoroughly done,
14:58and then just go back
15:00as a bargaining chip
15:00where you might just find out,
15:01hey,
15:01this is a great car
15:02and,
15:02you know,
15:03I've got to spend
15:03a few hundred bucks on it.
15:04You know,
15:04I'm happy.
15:05So,
15:06but you want to know that stuff
15:07before you write the check
15:09or you sign the document
15:10saying that you own the vehicle,
15:11right?
15:12You've got a way better
15:13bargaining,
15:14you know,
15:15platform or angle there
15:18than you do
15:18after you pay for it.
15:19So appreciate you guys watching.
