00:00Lost treasure, the foundation of legends and lore, and the greatest lost treasure of all,
00:16belonged to the Knights Templar. Now, new evidence is being unearthed.
00:24We're finding unprecedented artifacts here.
00:26Pirate shipwrecks, untouched for hundreds of years, that may hold lost Templar treasure.
00:35These artifacts could be connected. I want to get to the truth.
00:39Historian Scott Walter joins forces with world-famous underwater explorer Barry Clifford
00:48on a journey across the globe and back in time to solve this ancient mystery.
00:56In Madagascar, Barry's made a game-changing discovery.
01:02If this is Templar treasure, it's beyond priceless and the most important pirate treasure ever discovered.
01:10And the investigation shifts to one of the most legendary pirates of all time.
01:17Captain Kidd. The team unearths new clues. That's a Masonic box code.
01:22That break the case wide open.
01:24An eight-pointed cross. That's Masonic.
01:26The question is, could Kidd have been involved in a high-stakes and highly secretive mission to get his hands on Templar treasure?
01:35The answers may just rewrite history.
01:38This is where the rubber meets the road, right here.
01:40For better or worse.
01:42Stop the operation.
01:43Really?
01:44Stop the operation.
01:45No reason, you know, just, no, you guys can't dive anymore.
01:48Underwater explorer Barry Clifford is investigating pirate shipwrecks, and he's finding objects that shouldn't be there.
02:02Ancient artifacts linked to the medieval Knights Templar.
02:20The question is, how might these two legendary sects, separated by 400 years, be connected?
02:28And if the answers can be found, might it lead to long-lost Templar treasure?
02:35To try and solve the mystery, Barry's probing a wreck he suspects, based on old maps, pieces of burned wood found on the sea floor, and 15 years of research,
02:46is the Adventure Galley, the warship of history's most infamous pirate, Captain William Kidd.
02:53I thought I'd go look around the Adventure Galley one more time.
02:57And so when I went there, I thought, well, you know, I'm gonna go to where I think the cabin was.
03:03And I noticed there was a crag, or a crack in the stones.
03:07And so I went into the old thing, and I put my hand up into the ceiling, and then the whole thing caved in on me.
03:14What do you think?
03:16I don't know what to do.
03:20It doesn't feel like it's too smooth.
03:25You hit silver.
03:26It makes a sound like a bell.
03:30I hit it with, you know, with a pair of pliers that I had, and it went ting, ting, ting.
03:36And I went, oh, my God.
03:47See that?
03:48100% silver.
03:49Barry believes he's found part of Captain Kidd's fabled lost treasure, a metal ingot covered
03:55in mysterious markings that he's convinced is silver.
04:05But weighing an estimated 100 pounds, it's too heavy for Barry to bring to the surface.
04:12For now, it'll remain hidden on the wreck.
04:27Finding Captain Kidd's treasure has been a lifelong dream for Barry and his team.
04:32My fascination with Captain Kidd started when I was very young.
04:37I'd heard stories about him, this legend that he had buried some of his treasure in Pleasant
04:44Bay, which is essentially my front yard.
04:47That got me interested in, okay, what's real and what's legend?
04:51I love legends.
04:52I love stories.
04:53There's no question.
04:54But it seems to me that the real story is always a lot more interesting than what anybody
05:01can make up in their heads.
05:03In 1696, the Scottish-born sea captain, William Kidd, led a search-and-destroy mission to the
05:11Indian Ocean with the backing of the English government.
05:15Kidd's legally sanctioned objective was to attack the ships of England's enemies and to
05:21bring down any pirates he came across.
05:24But on the high seas, Kidd turned pirate himself.
05:32Capturing ships and pillaging their cargo, amassing a great fortune worth millions today.
05:39After three years at sea, his heavily armed 34-gun ship, the Adventure Galley, was leaking
05:46so badly, Kidd was forced to scuttle her in the Pirate Bay in Madagascar.
05:53Before Kidd was arrested for piracy and ultimately executed in 1701, legend has it, he buried treasure
06:00in secret locations throughout the world.
06:03At the time, the authorities were covered only a quarter of the loot.
06:11Many, including Barry and his team, believe the rest is still out there.
06:17It's the stuff of legends.
06:18It's the pirate treasure of all pirate treasure.
06:21Are you goosebumps?
06:22I'm speechless.
06:23It just hasn't sunk in yet.
06:26It's gonna take a while, but we're rewriting the history of these pirates and now Captain
06:32Kidd.
06:33So, that's great news.
06:34Oh, man.
06:35God.
06:36This has blown me a lot.
06:39Good job.
06:40It just seems like it's a big bar of pirate silver.
06:43It looks piratical in every sort of way.
06:46It's crude, it's ugly, and it weighs 100 pounds.
06:50I guarantee there's a whole lot more where that came from.
06:53Could be the front page of every newspaper in the world.
06:58The ingot on what the team believes is the wreck of Captain Kidd's ship is a game changer.
07:05So, what other treasure lies in the ruins?
07:09And is any of it somehow connected to the Knights Templar?
07:13This is the stuff of legends.
07:16This is what people have been looking for for over 300 years.
07:20We could be onto something very important.
07:26To find out more, Barry is putting team historian Scott Walter on the case.
07:40Barry sent me here to New York where I'm gonna learn everything I can about Captain Kidd and
07:45whether or not he might have been connected to the Templars.
07:51So far, Scott's been to Israel and Portugal tracing the path of the Knights Templar.
07:57If I'm gonna find any clues at all, maybe I can find something down here.
08:02But now, he's shifting gears to investigate Captain Kidd in the last place he called home.
08:10In the late 17th century, Kidd lived in the heart of Manhattan until, in 1696, he set sail from New York City to the Indian Ocean.
08:22The team believes that somewhere along the way, he got his hands on a mysterious metal ingot Barry just found.
08:29Scott starts his investigation by analyzing the cryptic markings found on the slab of treasure.
08:40He believes the double-stamped numbers 95 and letters IXB were made by the foundry where the bar was poured.
08:48But far more mysterious are the two giant letters that are carved into the ingot.
08:54I'm looking at some pictures that Barry sent to me of this incredible silver bar that he found.
09:02And at first glance, it looks like a capital T and an S, but I see a symbol that I recognize.
09:09It's something called a triple tau.
09:12I mean, this thing is absolutely Freemasonic.
09:16This is a huge, huge find by Barry, and I know it's gonna yield dividends.
09:21The triple tau is a key symbol to Freemasonry.
09:26Traditionally, the Brotherhood has three grades for its members to attain.
09:33One would enter as an apprentice, rise to be a fellow, and finally become a Master Mason.
09:40The triple tau is believed to represent the Holy Trinity, and is a symbol that can only be worn by the highest ranking Freemasons.
09:52In this book, there's a picture of a Freemason with his Masonic apron on, and it has the triple tau prominently displayed.
10:00So I know it's important.
10:03But the meaning behind the triple tau is only the beginning of the mystery.
10:08How did a Masonic symbol get on this silver bar, and is Kidd connected to it somehow?
10:16Scott sets out in search of answers.
10:19I'm meeting Mark Coco Rivera.
10:22He's a Freemason and New York historian who knows a thing or two about Captain Kidd and any possible Masonic link.
10:30Thanks for coming.
10:31My pleasure.
10:32I've got something to show you.
10:33Really?
10:34Yes.
10:35Well, Mark, what I'd like to show you is a symbol that was found on a 110-pound silver bar that came from the bottom of the ocean.
10:45I'll just leave it at that for now, but what I see here is what I think is a triple tau.
10:51And I know that if that's what it is, you'll understand it.
10:55It's crude, but that's what it is.
10:58Every royal arch Freemason in the world would recognize this as one of the symbols of royal archmasonry, as the triple tau.
11:09It is a Masonic symbol, but that's not all that it is.
11:14It also has a connection to the medieval Knights Templar.
11:19The Templars?
11:20The Templars.
11:21That's right.
11:22Explorers Barry Clifford and Scott Walter are trying to unlock a mystery that directly connects the pirates of the 17th century to the medieval Knights Templar.
11:41Scott's in New York City to decipher a symbol on a mysterious metal ingot the team believes once belonged to Captain Kidd.
11:54He's meeting historian Mark Coltko Rivera, and they've had a major breakthrough.
12:02The triple tau is a Masonic symbol, but that's not all that it is.
12:08It also has a connection to the medieval Knights Templar.
12:13The Templars.
12:14The Templars.
12:15The Templars.
12:16That's right.
12:17Now, the reason for that, it's called the triple tau because it looks like three capital letter T, or in Greek, tau.
12:27But that's probably not what it really is from.
12:30What it probably is, is a capital Latin T imposed on a capital Latin H.
12:37T for Templum, H for Hierosoluma.
12:43Templum Hierosoluma is the Temple of Jerusalem.
12:47Okay.
12:48Which is, of course, where the headquarters of the Knights Templar were.
12:52A very important place to the Knights Templar and the Freemasons.
12:56Is that not correct?
12:57Yes, that's true.
12:58That's amazing.
12:59Mark's assessment draws a direct link between the Templars and Freemasons.
13:05And, as legend suggests, many believe there are deeper connections.
13:11The Knights Templar, an elite order of warriors, took their name from one of religion's most sacred sites.
13:19The Temple of Solomon.
13:23After they were driven out of France in 1307, it's believed some Templar Knights fled to Scotland.
13:30Here, the first recorded Freemason Lodge was established in 1599, inspired, it's argued, by local Templar traditions.
13:40Freemason initiation rites were based on and named after the Templars.
13:45What's more, Freemasons draw sacred inspiration from King Solomon's Temple, said to house the Ark of the Covenant, and on whose site the Templars built their headquarters in Jerusalem.
13:57And, intriguingly, some Freemason ceremonial robes feature the skull and crossbones.
14:08Well, Mark, you've just confirmed that this triple tau symbol is both a Freemason symbol and Knights Templar.
14:16So, in light of that, could this silver bar with that symbol there, the triple tau, somehow be a connection that joins the two?
14:25That's exactly right.
14:26In my opinion, this is more strongly connected to the Templars.
14:31For Scott and the team, the meaning behind the triple tau is a major step forward, and adds fuel to the bold new theory.
14:41That they've potentially discovered a piece of Captain Kidd's treasure that may have also once belonged to the Knights Templar.
14:49I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it.
14:52It was almost too good to be true.
14:54We're talking about a symbol that's absolutely Freemasonic and Knights Templar.
15:00I don't know what to say, but this is amazing.
15:03That's right.
15:058,000 miles away, in Madagascar.
15:09As Scott's news reaches Barry Clifford, he's equally stunned.
15:14If this is Templar treasure, it's beyond priceless, and the most important pirate treasure ever discovered.
15:24I don't know what else is there.
15:26I can't imagine there would be just one silver bar.
15:29This is half of the bar. This was cut off.
15:31So the bar weighed close to 200 pounds, because this weighs at least 100 pounds.
15:36It could be the largest silver bar ever found.
15:39It's the discovery of a lifetime.
15:49It's crazy.
15:50But without the proper resources at hand, there's no way to safeguard such a precious piece of treasure.
15:56And the team is fearful of looters.
15:59We have to be really careful how we handle this.
16:02My mind is going like this.
16:05I'm sure there's people here that would love to just take this and disappear with it.
16:11Madagascar.
16:12This is a dangerous place.
16:14And as soon as this gets out, you'll have the pirates from Mogadishu over here.
16:19So it's just asking for trouble.
16:24After the initial discovery, Barry kept Kidd's suspected treasure on the ocean floor.
16:30And now, he's making a risky decision.
16:34We just leave the silver right there.
16:37We'll cover it up.
16:39And we have to consult with the government, and we have to figure out what the next step to take.
16:45We're all supposed to be excited, but I'm a little bit shell-shocked.
16:51I'm not sure how to react to it.
16:53It's like biting off more than you can take.
17:01I do know one thing.
17:03I don't think it's down there by itself.
17:06At first light, Barry and his team return to the wreck they believe is the Adventure Galley.
17:21Covered up where it came from.
17:24To disguise their latest find, they return it to the exact position where Barry found it,
17:29and delicately place the original ballast arm back on top.
17:36Can you see it?
17:41Yeah, I mean, this is fairly good. You can't see.
17:47For now, their extraordinary discovery will remain a secret.
17:52It's not to be discussed by anybody here, okay?
17:59After we leave this spot, not one word until...
18:03Because I don't want to start some kind of a panic.
18:05Panic.
18:12Are the medieval Knights Templar of the 12th century directly connected to 17th century pirates?
18:19Could one of history's most famous treasures have ended up as pirate booty?
18:26Explorer Scott Walter and Barry Clifford are trying to find out.
18:36In New York City, Scott's working with local historian Mark Coco Rivera to learn more about Captain Kidd.
18:48Who, in the 1690s, ran a trading business buying and selling goods.
18:53And, of course, was an accomplished sea captain.
18:58So, Mark, let me ask you a question.
19:00Why did he live in the southern end of Manhattan?
19:02There are two reasons for that.
19:04First of all, as you can note, this is where the shipping is.
19:09This is where the harbor is. And that was his business.
19:12Secondly, of course, he needed money to back his business ventures.
19:17And he was a ten-minute walk from the beating heart of the financial district in his era.
19:24Every day is a deal day in New York.
19:26And so he would be looking for people to finance his ventures.
19:31Trading is not something where you just go and make the trade.
19:34He's got to get the goods.
19:36He's got to get financing to go and sell the goods or get the goods in the first place.
19:41So he'd be making connections.
19:42One of the places where Kidd did business was a stone's throw from his New York home.
19:49And would later become a major landmark.
19:53Trinity Church.
19:56Here, Mark has secured exclusive access to vital, rarely seen documents.
20:01Scott, here we are in the archives of Trinity Church.
20:11Archives that go back for centuries.
20:14And this is a primary source document. This is... you just don't see this all the time.
20:19No, this is precious. This is a jewel.
20:21This is a document from 1696.
20:25They're the minutes from the building committee for the first Trinity Church.
20:30Okay.
20:31And here you can see that Captain Kidd has lent a runner and tackle for the hoisting up of stones for as long as he is here.
20:45So this is the equipment that came off of his ship, right?
20:48Off of his ship.
20:49Used to build the church.
20:51That's right. Used to hoist the blocks of stone up to build the first Trinity Church.
20:56Now keep in mind, this is just before he goes on his two-year voyage of disaster.
21:03So this was also the time when he was putting together his business associates, getting the money in place, getting the equipment in place, getting the crew in place to take off on this infamous voyage.
21:14Yes.
21:15These are physical documents. These firmly place Kidd in the most important church in New York.
21:23Trinity is no ordinary church. It was an important site during the American Revolution, played a role in the founding of the United States, and George Washington worshipped here.
21:36Finding evidence that Captain Kidd helped build it places him at the heart of one of the most important sites in American history.
21:45It also bought him a place amongst New York's elite.
21:49I see the name Kidd over here.
21:52Okay, this is a different document.
21:54It is a list of the pews in the church and who has paid rent to sit in those pews.
22:04Pew number four, half of that was for the rector and I guess the rector's family.
22:10The other half, it says, Captain Kidd's heirs claimed this and are all paid up.
22:18So what I think happened is that Kidd, back when the church was still being built with the aid of his equipment, paid up to sit in the fourth pew with his family.
22:31The rector.
22:32Right.
22:33Now, he's pretty much the most important person associated with the church, right?
22:36Absolutely.
22:37So his family is sitting with this high-powered person.
22:41That's a position of status, is it not?
22:44Yes.
22:45And he would be, frankly in that era especially, would be considered the most respectable member of the community.
22:52Mark has delivered yet another fascinating piece of information that adds intrigue to the precious slab the team are convinced is part of Captain Kidd's treasure.
23:03Was Kidd really a pirate, or an upstanding citizen, or both?
23:09As I learned more about Captain Kidd, the more you realize that the story isn't exactly what the truth is.
23:16And the idea that he was a bandana-wearing, knife-in-his-teeth pirate that we all think about is not at all the truth.
23:26This guy was a high society socialite, a well-to-do man, and the legend isn't necessarily reality.
23:34These documents are vitally important to somebody like me because, look, stories and legends are great, and they may be true, they may not be true, but this is where the rubber meets the road, right here.
23:45These kind of documents actually validate the stories or not.
23:51This is not fantasy.
23:52This is absolute reality.
23:55Great.
23:56Isle St. Marie, Madagascar, explorers Barry Clifford and Scott Walter are trying to unlock a mystery that connects 17th century pirates to the medieval Knights Templar, and just might lead them to long lost treasure.
24:17The centerpiece of their investigation is a 100-pound metal ingot, unearthed by the team, which they believe belong to the notorious pirate, Captain Kidd.
24:32In New York, Scott's discovered key information about the strange markings carved into the treasure.
24:38It is a Masonic symbol, but it also has a connection to the medieval Knights Templar.
24:47Scott believes the Freemason connection might be the vital link between the Templars and pirates, and Barry Clifford agrees.
24:58In Madagascar, in the hills high above Pirate Bay, Barry and his team are taking a break from diving to explore a remote graveyard and look for more clues.
25:16It's very possible that there's strong connections between Masons and pirates.
25:23You know, we need to investigate.
25:25Unused for hundreds of years, local legend suggests the site is the final resting place of infamous pirates who raided these waters.
25:35A little rundown.
25:36A little rundown.
25:37I wonder how long they've been burying people up here.
25:40I think the older graves probably are unmarked.
25:45Yeah, definitely.
25:46It's called the pirate graveyard, and it's been called that for a long, long time.
25:53And I think this is probably where the original pirates buried their dead.
25:59This is his first mate, the Marine commander.
26:09So that's interesting that he has this on his grave.
26:13Yeah.
26:14He must have really liked his cannons.
26:17Hey, Chris, check this out.
26:20You're not going to believe this.
26:22What's that?
26:24An eight-pointed cross.
26:29Kind of a weird shape.
26:34That's not your typical crucifix.
26:37No, it's definitely different.
26:39That's Masonic.
26:40Definitely the cryptic symbol.
26:42Yeah, they're adding up, aren't they?
26:44Yeah.
26:45Holy .
26:46That's a Masonic star, I think, Chris.
26:51The eight-pointed star is similar to the markings Barry discovered on a shoreline pottery fragment.
26:58Oh, my God.
26:59He believes is centuries old.
27:02Cross.
27:03Cross.
27:04That's like a Templar cross.
27:07Is that real?
27:09It's real.
27:11If Barry's hunch is correct, it's yet another piece of evidence that fits into the team's belief
27:16that Freemasons, Templars, and Pirates are all linked together.
27:22I think we found two or three Masonic symbols.
27:26These symbols are really interesting.
27:28That is a mystery waiting to be solved.
27:30So that's why I say the more we explore, the more we find.
27:33There's clear evidence that there were Masons here.
27:37It's a good omen.
27:39You know, it's sort of the thing we've been talking about.
27:44At the same time, on the other side of the world in New York City,
27:49Scott's also looking for clues among the dead.
27:54He's investigating the cemetery of Trinity Church.
27:58A church he recently learned was built in 1697 with the help of legendary pirate Captain Kidd.
28:09Ha!
28:10Skull and crossbones.
28:12Right here.
28:13It's a symbol of pirates.
28:15Some people say it's a symbol of Jesus.
28:17You know, tombstones and cemeteries can be an incredible source of information.
28:27And not just about who these people were and when they died,
28:31but it also says a lot about who they are by the symbols and messages that are carved on their tombstones.
28:37That's a Masonic box code.
28:44Ah, compass and square right here.
28:49Compass, square, plump.
28:54That's another Masonic symbol.
28:59Scott's seeing the same type of symbols Barry and his team found in the pirate graveyard in Madagascar.
29:06After looking at all these tombstones, Freemasons were heavily involved with Trinity Church.
29:13I'm seeing a lot of compass and square symbols, which is the most common symbol of Freemasonry.
29:22The first Freemason Grand Lodge in America was established in 1733.
29:27But Scott's finding symbols that predate that.
29:32It suggests early European Freemasons may have operated secretly in New York during the same time period that Captain Kidd lived here.
29:42If so, were they working together?
29:47Is this how Kidd may have gotten his hands on a metallic bar covered in Masonic symbols?
29:54The team's theory is picking up steam.
29:57Kidd was definitely heavily involved with Trinity Church.
30:01And Freemasons were heavily involved with Trinity Church.
30:04It seems to me everywhere I look, Captain Kidd and Freemasons seem to be coming together.
30:12Explorers Scott Walter and Barry Clifford are unearthing what they believe are clear connections between 17th century pirates and the medieval Knights Templar.
30:31Now, their lead theory centers on another mysterious group from history, the Freemasons.
30:38From New York City...
30:40That's a Masonic box code.
30:42...to the coast of Madagascar.
30:46There's clear evidence that there were Masons here.
30:50Barry and Scott are finding evidence that they believe links pirates to Freemasons, and in turn, Freemasons to the Knights Templar.
31:01That is a Freemason symbol.
31:03We know many of the pirates were Freemasons.
31:05Yeah.
31:06And I believe there's a connection between the Freemasons and the Templars.
31:11In Pirate Bay, the case is getting stronger.
31:16I found another Masonic symbol.
31:21Just look at the design.
31:23Man.
31:24You see here, Chris?
31:26Yeah.
31:27I think that is a Freemasons symbol.
31:30Yeah.
31:31And it goes along with the other pieces that Barry keeps picking up around here.
31:36Same as the other one.
31:38Very cool stuff.
31:40It's not long before Barry unearths another compelling clue.
31:44Oh, my God.
31:47That is very, very interesting.
31:50Mario.
31:51That's part of that other one.
31:52Yeah.
31:53Same thing.
31:54Seems to me like a proper Templar cross.
31:59That's definitely an eight-pointed cross Templars.
32:03Yes.
32:04Barry's found what appears to be another Templar symbol.
32:09When he puts the piece side by side with the Masonic pottery, Barry notices a striking similarity.
32:16That looks like it could be a part of the same pottery.
32:21That's not a coincidence.
32:24Finding possible Masonic and Templar artifacts side by side excites the team.
32:31Could these relics be further proof that the Knights Templar, Freemasons, and 17th century pirates are all somehow connected?
32:40As word reaches Scott in New York City, he's also trying to find the answer.
32:52Scott's returned to see Freemason and local historian Dr. Mark Kolko-Rivera.
32:57My pleasure.
32:58Who's promised new information concerning Captain Kidd.
33:03In 1696, the Scottish-born Kidd set sail from New York for the Indian Ocean on a government-backed mission to attack and seize the ships of England's enemies.
33:22What can you tell me?
33:24Kidd did not fund himself.
33:27Kidd was funded by a syndicate, a cabal if you will.
33:32But these were legitimate businessmen and they included other big New York characters.
33:37There is William Kidd, Lord Belomont.
33:42And born in Scotland, there is the money man who's backing this.
33:48That would be one of the richest people in the colony of New York, Robert Livingston the Elder.
33:55I have a reproduction of Livingston's diary.
33:59And we read of his meeting with Kidd and having Kidd stay an evening over at his own home.
34:09Robert Livingston was a fellow Scot, an old acquaintance of Captain Kidd.
34:17He was also one of the wealthiest businessmen in the English colony of New York.
34:24His diary suggests that he was the prime mover behind Kidd's expedition to the Indian Ocean in search of treasure.
34:31October 3rd. The other matter of Kidd has also given me much trouble.
34:38And at last, this evening being Thursday, I discussed the matter with two great personages and satisfied them.
34:46The business is to proceed.
34:50I hope that by this means my affairs may have a happy ending.
34:53So basically what it sounds like in Livingston's diary, we have the foundation of a group of people who became prime business players together with Kidd being the guy out collecting the booty.
35:09Am I, am I understanding this right?
35:11Yes. Yes, you've got it.
35:13Okay. That's helpful.
35:16As Scott takes in the information and digests what he's learned in New York.
35:19It's something called the Triple Tau.
35:23Absolutely Freemasonic.
35:25Also has a connection to the Templars.
35:28These documents place Kidd in the Trinity Church.
35:32That's a Masonic box code.
35:35In Scott's mind, the evidence is pointing in one direction.
35:40The question I want to ask you, is it possible that Kidd could have been a Freemason too?
35:44In this period of time in North America, the number of Freemasons was very small.
35:52Can I push back and say the number of known Freemasons?
35:56These guys were all Scottish, including Kidd.
35:59And in Scotland, we know that Freemasonry dates back to the 1500s.
36:03Well, this is long before Kidd and his associates, so why couldn't it be possible since they all came from Scotland?
36:11They have that Scottish connection that they might not have had some type of association.
36:17Maybe they didn't call it Freemasonry, but it was something akin to it.
36:21That's possible, but that's probably unlikely.
36:24Okay, but you're leaving the door open a little bit. The possibility does exist.
36:32The speculation that Kidd may have been a Freemason leads Scott to propose a radical new theory,
36:39which if true, will blow this investigation wide open.
36:43First of all, Kidd was a serious player in New York, a very prominent person.
36:49He was also connected to very prominent people, a cabal, if you will, of businessmen that were to finance his operations.
36:57But the other thing that's interesting, it's looking to me like they were all Scottish Freemasons.
37:02With Barry finding the silver bar with the triple tau on it, which is both a Masonic symbol and a Templar symbol,
37:10the question is, could Kidd have been involved in a high stakes and highly secretive mission to get his hands on Templar treasure?
37:19Explorers Scott Walter and Barry Clifford are on a mission to solve a mystery that links two of history's most secretive societies,
37:3517th century pirates and the medieval Knights Templar.
37:40The focus of their investigation has been an object they believe was once Captain Kidd's treasure.
37:46See that? It's silver.
37:49They've learned that the strange markings on the 100 pound ingot are related to both Freemasons and the Knights Templar.
37:56This is Templar treasure. It's beyond priceless and the most important pirate treasure ever discovered.
38:03And have come up with a radical new theory.
38:06Could Kidd have been involved in a high stakes and highly secretive mission to get his hands on Templar treasure?
38:13In Madagascar, Barry is diving on a wreck he believes, after 15 years of intense field research, to be Captain Kidd's flagship, the Adventure Galley, where he found the mysterious metal ingot.
38:28Use your wildest, wildest imagination and that's what's on this ship.
38:31The visibility is practically zero.
38:34The visibility is practically zero.
38:37You're going to be above the top of the ship.
38:38You're coming in here.
38:39Are they in here?
38:40The ship..
38:41No, no, no.
38:42Yeah.
38:43You're coming out.
38:44You're coming out.
38:45I'm inside.
38:47I'm inside.
38:48You're coming out.
38:49I'm inside.
38:50I'm inside.
38:51I'm inside.
38:52And it's alright.
38:54All this is ours.
38:55One of them are in here.
38:56I'm inside.
38:57On the bottom.
38:58So, they're in here.
38:59Come on!
39:00Here, there are a number of animals.
39:02They're in here.
39:03You're in here.
39:04OK, I'm inside.
39:05Those are cannonballs.
39:08There's a lot more of those down there.
39:10It's all metal.
39:12Captain Kidd claimed to have stripped his ship of all metal before sinking it.
39:17So the cannonballs are another sign to bury that more treasure may be hidden on the wreck site.
39:25Cannonballs were like gold to these guys.
39:28They're very, very valuable.
39:30Couldn't go back to London and get them.
39:32People didn't leave cannonballs on ships here.
39:35You know, in any ship that was purposely sunk, I wouldn't expect to find cannonballs on them.
39:50And Barry's gone.
39:53Back underwater, Barry can feel another major discovery within reach.
39:59Interesting.
40:03It's all metal.
40:06But just then, unexpected news arrives.
40:12From a government official.
40:17Stop the operation.
40:19Really?
40:20Stop the operation.
40:21Barry's diving expedition has been inexplicably shut down.
40:47We're being shut down.
40:50So you might as well come back.
40:54For the team, it's a shocking and devastating blow.
40:58They seem to be on the brink of another big discovery.
41:02But more importantly, the key evidence they've unearthed, which Barry believes is a priceless piece of Captain Kidd's treasure, inscribed with Masonic and Templar symbols, still lies on the sea floor, where they've been hiding it from looters.
41:17And now, the team may never get their hands on it again.
41:22One minute we're working, we're finding these great artifacts, and then we're shut down.
41:27No reason, you know, just, nope, you guys can't dive anymore.
41:31I'm not, that's it, I'm out of here.
41:34Chris!
41:35I'm not sure what's going to happen, but I'm not going to be willing to back off of this project in any way.
41:52I'm not sure what's going to happen.
