00:00Welcome to Fab Movie, this video contains spoiler, please watch carefully.
00:09Hello. This is the beginning. The beginning of a film called The Wonder.
00:16The people you are about to meet, the characters, believe in their stories with complete devotion.
00:23We are nothing without stories and so we invite you to believe in this one.
00:30The film starts in 1862. Elizabeth Libright, an English nurse who served in the Crimean War,
00:49is sent to a rural village in Ireland where she is tasked with closely watching Anna O'Donnell,
00:54a fasting girl, who according to her family has not eaten for four months.
01:04She is to be assisted by a nun, Sister Michael, and the two are to report their findings independently
01:11to a council of local dignitaries.
01:13The trauma of the Great Famine, period of starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1849,
01:23still looms over the community, and many locals are wary of the English nurse.
01:30Lib meets Anna's deeply religious family, her mother Rosaline, her father Malachi and her elder sister Kitty.
01:38At dinner, Lib learns that Anna's elder brother died of an unknown illness.
01:46Anna herself appears in good health and says she has been kept alive by consuming manna from heaven.
01:54Manna is, according to the Bible, an edible substance which God provided for the Israelites
02:00during their travels in the desert during the 40-year period following the exodus and prior to the conquest of Canaan.
02:09At Lib's lodgings, she encounters William Byrne, a man who grew up locally and whose family perished in the Great Famine
02:16while he was away at boarding school.
02:20Now a journalist for the Daily Telegraph, William is reporting on the story, which he believes to be a hoax.
02:26Lib and William fall for each other during their investigation and become intimately involved.
02:36Lib's observations initially reveal no evidence of deception.
02:42Anna prays many times a day and speaks of the fate of the damned in hell.
02:48Lib, still grieving for the death of her only child, takes medicines to help her sleep.
02:56Noticing that her mother kisses Anna goodnight on her mouth while cupping her face,
03:18Lib deduces that chewed food is being covertly passed to Anna.
03:22She forbids the family from touching her.
03:28Anna does not deny that this is her manner, and she discloses to Lib the reasons for her fast,
03:34her elder brother had repeatedly raped her, and she attributes his death to God's wrath.
03:40Anna believes that by sacrificing her life she will free her brother's soul.
03:46Separated from her family's touch, Anna's condition worsens.
03:50William files a report to his paper in which he lays the blame for Anna's expected death on her family and the community.
04:00Lib informs the council of her findings, but they refuse to believe her.
04:06Sister Michael states that she had found no evidence of Rosaline feeding Anna.
04:10Members of the council question Anna, but she repeats that Anna is sustained solely by the foods passed through the mouth of her mother while giving goodnight kisses.
04:22Knowing that Anna will inevitably die unless she eats soon, Lib pleads for the family to take action, or at least for her mother to resume the kisses.
04:31Rosaline refuses, saying that after Anna's sacred death, both her children will be in heaven.
04:41Lib persuades William to assist with a rescue plan.
04:44While the family are at mass, Lib brings Anna, now near death, to a nearby holy clouty well.
04:54A clouty well is a holy well, almost always with a tree growing beside it, where small strips of cloth or ribbons are left as part of a healing ritual, usually by tying them to branches of the tree.
05:06She tells her that although Anna will die, she will be reborn as a new girl named Nan.
05:14Anna closes her eyes and appears to die.
05:18When she revives, Lib is finally able to feed her.
05:23Lib returns to the house alone and sets it ablaze, at the same time deliberately destroying her medicine bottle.
05:30Lib tells the council that Anna died of natural causes, and that the fire was an accident.
05:38Concerned for their own possible culpability for Anna's death, and in the absence of a body within the charred remains of the house, they terminate her employment without pay.
05:48Sister Michael tells Lib that, after leaving mass early, she saw a vision of Anna and an angel leaving the area on horseback.
05:56She asks Lib to swear that Anna has gone to a better place.
06:01In London, Lib reunites with William and Nan, who has recovered her health.
06:08The three pose as a family named Cheshire and set sail for Sydney.
