00:00It's now the second weapon in Mali's arsenal to fight against one of the deadliest diseases on the African continent.
00:06UNICEF marking Wild Malaria Day with a rollout of R21 Matrix M,
00:11leading to the country the 20th nation to introduce what is the second vaccine approved by the WHO against the disease.
00:18Authorities say they saw malaria cases decrease by 75% in the months following the first inoculation campaign,
00:24but some aren't convinced by the efficacy of the vaccines.
00:27The vaccines are OK. They're not brilliant, like many of the vaccines that we give to children,
00:34which are very, very effective. You might only need one to protect you for life.
00:39They're not useless either. They provide reasonable levels of protection.
00:46Unfortunately, not for a very long time.
00:48So the problem with the vaccines is how do we deliver them to the people that need them,
00:55and the people that need them largely are children in Africa, although we can use them also to accelerate elimination,
01:02but that's more experimental at the present time.
01:06So how important are they? Probably moderately important,
01:09but they're certainly not game changers as vaccines have been for other diseases.
01:13There remain major challenges in the fight against malaria, and vaccines may not be enough.
01:24Scientists are now eyeing other ways of protecting people against the disease.
01:28Research into genetically modifying mosquitoes so that the insects themselves cannot harm the parasites they carry is underway.
