00:00I don't think I snore but I'm told I snore.
00:02Yes I do snore when I'm very tired but that's when other people have told me
00:08and then other times I don't snore at all.
00:11Not anymore.
00:12Uh, yeah. Sometimes.
00:14I don't know. My mom snores and my girlfriend snores
00:18and we've tried some things but the snoring just doesn't stop.
00:21No. I'm looking at... I don't snore do I? No.
00:26Uh, not that I know of. I know my boyfriend does though.
00:30Because I don't wake myself up with the snoring so and I don't have anyone
00:34nudging me in the back and sort of roll over.
00:37So I haven't tried anything and I know my husband, he passed away last summer
00:45but he was a very very bad snorer and it's okay so you know he got the elbow in the back
00:52to roll over and that was his way of trying... me trying to stop him from snoring
00:58but never tried any of the kind of nose um sort of clips and things like that that you see advertised.
01:04I don't think uh some methods work. I think it's the money making scheme.
01:10So I had tonsillitis and it was causing sleep apnea so the tonsils was taken out.
01:16Go right of it. Yeah nice little strips. So my mom has the actual mask kind of like a sleep apnea mask
01:25but it's for snoring and then she's also tried like the nose strips that kind of hold your nose
01:31open a little bit more but that's not working and trying to tell them stop snoring doesn't seem to work
01:38either um sleeping on their front or lying on their side um it's my dad he snores very badly
01:46if he's laying on his back it's a problem so he tries to sleep on his front.
01:51Yeah I think so um they used like um like nasal strike like things and um bits and pieces yeah I
01:59think like a spray thing as well. It is expected that roughly 40 percent of adults um males and females
02:06here in the UK snore. So it is fairly common um a third of them would also have a condition called
02:12a sleep apnea. Now obviously we are more concerned about sleep apnea because that is associated with
02:18other health you know health scares. But the biggest myth that I've heard about snoring is that
02:25most individuals tell me they snore from their nose but actually snoring does not occur over there.
02:30It technically occurs because of a partial collapse of your upper airways which are right behind your
02:37tongue and this tends to happen only when you sleep and and because it's of a partial collapse of the
02:44upper airway it tends to be worse when you're lying on your back. So as you've heard in some of the videos
02:50they mentioned asking their partners to sleep on the side which resulted in some improvement.
02:55But there are various reasons for that and and obviously we can discuss those in detail.
03:01Yeah and a big problem with snoring you see it's sort of a bit of a domestic between partners and
03:07couples that I can I had a terrible sleep last night because you were snoring they might have been
03:12sleeping soundly but it was the partner that suffered. So what are some of those sort of longer
03:16term impacts that snoring can actually have not just the actual snoring itself but the lack of sleep
03:22from it? That's right so the vast majority of people who snore may not have any health care
03:29problems. The main issue occurs in those individuals where the the airway obstructs to a significant
03:37degree which results in your sleep being disrupted even though people would be sleeping through the
03:42night their brain is having to work fairly hard to keep the breathing going through the night and
03:48that is what can lead to issues in the long term. We know individuals who have high blood pressure,
03:55diabetes, heart diseases, heart failure, 50% of them would have sleep apnoea. So my advice would be
04:02that if your partner or you are snoring and have been told that you may be stopping breathing at times
04:11then seeking medical help or advice would be would be very helpful. Is it bad if we snore? Is it more
04:18is it a worry that if I if I do snore at night should I actually be worried about my health?
04:23So as as I just mentioned if you just snore in itself it's not a health care scare but if you
04:31have episodes where your breathing reduces significantly whereby you're not taking in enough oxygen or air into
04:38your lungs that can be associated with health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, palpitations
04:47and it's it's important to seek help at that stage.
