If you’ve ever grown tomatoes you will know they are among the fastest growing plants to start from seed under the right conditions, and to ensure a crop by the end of summer into autumn, it’s important to keep up with them.

00:00Today what we're going to be doing is planting up some tomatoes, patting them on. You can see
00:15they've got very tall, kind of blowing all over the place here. In these smaller pots, these are
00:21the tomato seeds we planted back in February and the three different varieties. We have two here
00:28today and the other one is going to be potted up as well but we'll let the other one on
00:34camera. This first variety is that they're a small cherry tomato but they're a
00:41yellow, they're Mirabelle Blanche and they come on really well. So we'll just get
00:48started now before they snap. I'd say the mix on this is about 80%
00:57compost, 20% topsoid, 80-85 compost. Compost is just the best growing medium because
01:12it's light, there's nutrients in it and this is just multi-purpose compost. And as I say the topsoid
01:22for helps with drainage, stops the compaction, just allows the roots to go down
01:29through quite easily.
01:32Fertilizing. Now this is an awful lot of fertilizer because the reason I put so much in is because these
01:39tomato plants they're hungry feeders and they're very thirsty plants as well so you always have to
01:44keep on top of watering them but these are going to be on here until right through the winter so
01:52and these will be on doors just by the glass doors in the kitchen growing. That's where I've grown them
01:59twice before and they've worked perfectly fine. So now that we've done that it's just a matter of
02:06getting the plants in. As you can see here it's got a well developed network of roots already but it's
02:14not root bound which is great. There's a smaller one in the same pot as this so I'm just going to
02:19prick that out and leave it to one side. That's got a very small root system so far so that'll be patted
02:27up later. So just for when you're planting up your tomatoes. This stem is it's got very leggy over the
02:40last two weeks and so it's still quite strong but I'm going to plant them right down and this is a good
02:46idea with tomatoes anyway is they make the hole much deeper than here so I'm going to pat them up
02:56to about here and it's not that deep enough. So that's them then some of those wee hairs and nodes
03:10they'll become roots that'll make for a much sturdier stronger plant then they end up so you can see
03:17that's already holding up much better in the wand here. And that's basically that one done.
03:26This one, these two are both quite healthy looking so I'll put these on beside it. I usually plant 45
03:36in one pot. I could just plant one but just for space I don't have a lot of space so
03:46I'm probably not even going to disturb the root ball on this I'm just going to plant it far down.
03:51A lot of people pinch their tomatoes they make for bushier plants. I have never done that and they've grown fine.
04:03I don't know I might try it this year with one or two of them just to see if it makes a difference.
04:15Maybe later on. This one's good and strong as well.
04:25I meant to do this several weeks ago. Get these planted up but as long as they're not root bound it's all right.
04:39So I'm not even bothered about burying some of the bottom leaves because I know it won't matter that much.
04:55So there's four in that one now and that's probably enough for that one and three more here. I'll grow them on in the greenhouse those ones. So that's basically the process and the other two varieties I'm growing is just a red cherry tomato one and a money maker. So these will be quite small.
05:13These yellow Mirabel Blanche ones. The money maker will be smallish but maybe about that size. They are a prolific grower though. They get a really good crop off them. The seeds are widely available in garden centres and supermarkets.
05:29So if you see them they are a really reliable one. So if you see them they are a really reliable one. So I'm just going to do the same with the next one as well.
05:51So next up we're going to be planting some broccoli. And for this I'm using these big black containers. And I have here some green broccoli. These were three seeds that came with an order. They've done very well. I'll just show you them up close.
06:12This is the purple broccoli. This is the purple broccoli. As you can see it's well out grown in its little container and the same with the green one.
06:19So green broccoli will produce bigger heads of broccoli and this purple one will produce long fun stems with smaller stems of broccoli. It will be purple in colour.
06:34So we'll just get on with this now.
06:43Now broccoli is very easy to grow from seed. I grew it last year. Just the green one. Seeds germinate fine. No special conditions. They tend to grow very fast. Especially when you pot them on like we're doing here now today.
07:04And they're pretty hardy as well. I put them out in February last year. They survived frost. They survived everything. So I know that these are one of the vegetables that I can just pot up and leave. And they'll just do their thing. As long as you check their water level. Because they are in a pot. They're more likely to dry out if there's a dry spell.
07:27Fortunately in Ireland we don't have to worry about that too much. Or unfortunately.
07:32Now there's a lot of seedlings here. So it's probably from a tiny free sample packet of seeds. There's about 60 heads of broccoli.
07:42That's probably from a tiny free sample packet of seeds. There's about 60 heads of broccoli. Which you're going to get off that. So they're not all fit in here. So I'll probably plant some in the ground as well. Just a minute afterwards.
08:11And they do very well where we plant them. So there's no special requirement for them. As long as the soil is not too compacted. It should do fine. And like most vegetables they require a lot of water. Don't really require any special treatment in terms of feed or anything like that. They're not like the tomatoes.
08:39So I have quite a few in there. So I have quite a few in there. Now I'm going to plug a few more in. Just in case some don't make it.
08:46In terms of pests. In terms of pests. Snails and slugs. We'll have a go at them. But the good thing about planting in pots is they're much tougher for them to get at.
09:04If they're in the ground. If they're in the ground. It's just a smuggish board for them. So that's them done up there.
09:12And that's a good deep pot as well. So the roots can go right down. And the stems should be doing sturdy as well. So that's them done.
