01:00They store water like huge sponges and release it in the dry seasons
01:04Wetlands are extremely important because most of the water that we use
01:09not only for human consumption but also for electricity, for irrigation, for crops
01:14all that water is water that is stored here
01:17People don't realize that but it's time that they should open their eyes
01:21and see what wetlands can do for us
01:23Many people after the hurricanes learn that thanks to mangroves, they live
01:31There's a lot of carbon dioxide stored in that peak
01:35and once it's dry then you have a lightning fire
01:37it would all burn up
01:38and so all that carbon dioxide that's been saved would be released into the atmosphere
01:43More than 40% of the carbon is retained in the wetlands
01:49Up to maybe 300 or 400 tons of carbon per hectare
01:54So the same as the tropical rainforest
01:56So to lose them would be a tremendous loss to humanity
02:02Why aren't we using that water to sequester carbon?
02:14Why aren't we using that water to help grow species that will sequester carbon?
02:19We should be doing that
02:21We should be doing that
