00:00Eight years after being banned from performing in the U.S. due to accusations by the U.S.
00:12Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control for money laundering in 2017,
00:18Julian Alvarez, the box office king, took to SoFi Stadium for a sold-out night of Mexican music,
00:24including corridos, a genre that's currently the subject of a whole lot of controversy.
00:30With stars like Nataniel Caño and now Luis R. Conríquez, who was recently prohibited from performing Narco Corridos during a set in Mexico.
00:39They said that if I sang a corrido, they would cut off the sound, Conríquez told Billboard Latin's Leila Cobo.
00:45The fans booed and threw things on stage, but Luis had his support from the music community backing him up,
00:51like Peso Pluma and Alejandro Fernandez, who's not even in the genre, reached out saying,
00:56Keep your head up, man. Hang in there.
00:58Conríquez was just following the rules and regulations established by Texcoco, a Mexican municipality that since April 9th,
01:06prohibited expressions that glorify violence following the implementation of a law targeting mass events.
01:13But corridos are nothing new. The style dates back to the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century.
01:18Today, in 2025, Narco Corridos, which specifically talk about the exploits of drug dealers, are getting pushback.
01:27And when Billboard asked the president of Mexico if Narco Corridos should be banned on a national level,
01:33she had this to say.
01:34With nothing holding him back in America, Conríquez now prepares to bring his Tracas tour to the U.S.
01:59Kicking off at UBS Arena in New York on April 25th, where he'll be able to perform his full repertoire, Narco Corridos and all.
