At the end of an exhausting cattle drive, Gene Autry (Gene Autry) and his faithful sidekick, Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette), leave their herd at a train depot, where they meet the lovely Mary Baxter (Frances Grant) and her engineer father, George (Sam Flint). Impressed by their toughness, the Baxters recruit Autry and Millhouse to patrol the unsecured construction site of an important dam-building project plagued by accidents of a deadly and mysterious nature.

02:01What is it, I, then? What's happened?
02:03They done done it again. They done blowed up gate number five.
02:08Where's the bitch rider?
02:09They couldn't find him on the hallway. He done blowed up with him.
02:13How big is the break?
02:14Powerful big. The water's poured over everything.
02:18Call your father at the dam. I'll phone the sheriff.
02:20Hello. Yes, Mary.
02:30What? I'll get right down there.
02:34Gate five has just been dynamited.
02:36Call Sam at the construction camp. Tell him to hurry men and timbers.
02:42What about timbers? I call the train.
02:45Gate five has been blown up.
02:46So it's gate five this time, eh?
02:48And a ditch rider along with it.
02:50There's somebody that won't even stop at murder to keep us from finishing the canal.
02:53I'd like to get me two hands on the dirty scoundrels, and so would I.
02:59Let go, Mike.
03:00All right.
03:01All aboard, everybody. All aboard.
03:03And you didn't see anybody riding away from there?
03:12No, sir, chef. Nobody.
03:14If dynamite doesn't explode by itself, somebody's setting it off.
03:18But why would anyone in this country want to keep the canal from being built?
03:22That water is our lifeblood.
03:25I'll go out and have a look over the ground.
03:27Sooner or later, they'll leave a clue behind.
03:31Something's got to be done, Steve.
03:33Dad and all the other ranchers.
03:34Everything they own is invested in this project.
03:37If it fails now...
03:38I won't let it fail.
03:40Not when it means that much to you.
03:50Get around that stair, Bob!
04:02My children!
04:17Oh, thank you so much.
04:21Oh, you're all right, darling.
04:23Don't cry.
04:26I'm sorry, ma'am.
04:28You should be.
04:29If you knew anything about handling cattle, this wouldn't have happened.
04:31I guess you're right.
04:33Say, Dean, I bet you threw that baby quick in your world record at the rodeo last year.
04:37If you'll put the animal back in the corral and come to the office, I'll give you your check.
04:42Now I know what was in this stair's mind.
04:44I bet he wanted to be delivered to you personally.
04:47And I don't blame him.
04:51Put a rope on him, Frog, and take him back to the corral.
04:53What's the trouble, Hank?
05:10Haven't you heard?
05:12Water shut off.
05:13I'll repair another dynamited gate.
05:15There goes a whole season's crop.
05:18I'm sure sorry, Hank.
05:19Well, just another one of those things, I guess.
05:23We're doing our best to put water on your land.
05:31But when our men are killed and our gates destroyed, how can we help it?
05:35I'll tell you how.
05:37You put a man on that job instead of that darn fool that can't even take care of himself.
05:42If wise men in the valley, who will protect our crops and property?
05:45Very well, gentlemen.
05:47Which of you is the man?
05:48I suppose you're willing to take the job.
05:50Why, I've got my own place to look after.
05:52So have I.
05:53You know I'm married and got a family.
05:55You're not married.
05:57Well, no.
05:59But I'm keeping company.
06:00Well, gentlemen.
06:02It's up to you.
06:07Never mind, Mother.
06:09We'll make out somehow.
06:10Well.
06:10What do you want?
06:20I'd like to pick up a check for that beef we delivered today.
06:23We'll settle with Mr. Autry the next time he's in town.
06:26It's me.
06:28I'm Mr. Autry.
06:31Pay him, please.
06:33Well, hello.
06:33I got that steer back, and here's the slip to prove it.
06:47You sent for me, boss?
06:49There's been another explosion, bull.
06:52Any dynamite missing from the warehouse?
06:55No, not a bit.
06:58Here's your check, Mr. Autry.
07:01Here's your beef tally, ma'am.
07:03Fifty even.
07:05Counting the one that tried to get friendly.
07:07I hope you'll enjoy your ride back to the ranch.
07:10I reckon the ranch will have to be doing without me for a while.
07:13I was figuring on asking you for that ditch rider's job.
07:15Isn't it still open?
07:19Why, why yes, but, uh...
07:20What's the matter with the job you've got?
07:22Nothing.
07:24I just thought I'd like this one better.
07:26But you don't understand what ditch riding means.
07:29Five men have been killed.
07:30And if you take my advice...
07:32That's good advice, Gene.
07:33Let's get out of here.
07:34Do I get the job or don't I?
07:36Well, I'm not so sure you can hold it.
07:38That's a man-sized job, Autry.
07:41Meaning, I guess, that it's too big for you.
07:43Suppose Bull here was a rancher who wanted more water than his share in the company entitled him to.
07:49Well, I wouldn't let him have it.
07:50Well, what if I took it anyway and started pushing you around like this?
07:55Why, I'd just...
07:57That's what I'd do?
08:00Yeah.
08:01That's what we'd do.
08:04Hold on, Bull.
08:05You ask the gentleman what he'd do.
08:08He's showing us that he's the man for the job and he's entitled to it.
08:11Isn't he?
08:12I, uh...
08:14Sure.
08:15Report here at 7 o'clock in the morning.
08:17I'll be here.
08:25Boy, that was sure as well, Gene.
08:27How'd you do this?
08:28Boy, that was a dude.
08:33You got nothing?
08:34Wait a minute.
08:36I got a bowl to pick with that guy.
08:39You watch me.
08:43This is going to be good.
08:50Why don't you look where you're going?
08:52I didn't mean to get your way.
08:54Oh, you won't argue, huh?
08:56I'm sure sorry.
08:58You ought to get tough with me.
09:00Hmm?
09:01You never do it, boy.
09:03Hey, you could twist my arse.
09:08I don't know.
09:09That's going down.
09:10I don't know.
09:11Why didn't I tell you to show me around?
09:41Why didn't I tell you to show me around?
10:09Why didn't I tell you to show me around?
10:17That was just carelessness. Suppose we'd been killed.
10:21Another construction accident. They're supposed to be unavoidable, you know.
10:25That wasn't. And I'm going to give Bull a piece of my mind when I check up with him.
10:29He deserves it. And while you're doing that, I'll go over and inspect the big gate.
10:33I'll meet you later and you can see me home.
10:35Swell. If I'd known that was part of my duties, I'd take my job for nothing.
10:39I'll see you later.
11:01I'll see you later.
11:29I'll see you later.
11:43Why are you all wet?
11:45You're telling me. Who's the man on the penthouse?
11:48I didn't see anyone, but I thought I heard a shock.
11:51No. That was the splash I made when I fell in.
11:54I told you ditch riding was dangerous.
11:56Nothing's happened so far, but I might have a chill.
11:59Then we'd better hurry back. It'll be dark by the time we get to town.
12:02What's the idea? I thought I was seeing you home.
12:13There's no rest for the boss's daughter. She still has work to do.
12:16You make me feel guilty. It was mighty nice of you to waste too much of your time on me.
12:22Oh, but it wasn't wasted. I never had a more enjoyable day.
12:26Good night. Good night.
12:35Hello, Steve.
12:36Where were you?
12:37Just having Mr. Autry get acquainted with his job.
12:40You ought to be pretty well acquainted by this time.
12:42Your father's just gone again. He said he wanted you to bring these reports.
12:47Thanks.
12:49We were worried about you.
12:50You ought to know how I can take care of myself.
12:52So can that ditch rider without any help from you.
12:55I wish you wouldn't talk that way, Steve. You have no right to criticize me.
13:12Do you notice this?
13:15Can that be appreciated?
13:18Iwws.
13:19We were worried about you.
13:23Good night.
13:26I don't know what people think.
13:28Why should we wait for questions?
13:30Yes, sir.
13:34Present?
13:35Nice.
13:37Tara cetera.
13:38One, two, three, four.
14:08One, two, three, four.
14:38One, two, three, four.
15:08One, two, three, four.
15:38One, two, three, four.
16:09Oh, don't be frank.
16:11It isn't me, you beat.
16:12It's the sheep herd here.
16:14Say, where did you learn to play checkers?
16:17Why, I never played a game of checkers in my life.
16:19Who are you?
16:20You made him take it and like it, son.
16:38Good work, Daddy.
16:39You're going to be needing a new ditch rider.
16:45How did you guess?
16:47Yeah?
16:49When?
16:50Tonight.
16:51What gate?
16:52What gate?
16:52What gate?
16:59Well, not because it's this gate tomorrow.
17:02They'll be hanging out of sight for a new ditch rider.
17:14I'll show you how to close this gate.
17:16I don't even want an auto.
17:18If I'm going to make a ditch rider out of your fraud.
17:21Not me, you don't.
17:23All right, then, if you're afraid.
17:24Oh, is that so?
17:25Well, I'm not afraid.
17:26Let's go ahead and get in it.
17:49That's all there is to it.
17:51Did I tell you?
17:52Here, let me turn that thing.
17:54That's easier than right than hurt.
17:56How much longer do I have to turn this thing?
18:18Practically through now.
18:19Hold it, Bob.
18:31Somebody was here last night.
18:35I'm beginning to smell a rat.
18:39It smells more like something burning, if you ask me.
18:41No wonder those other riders never live long enough to tell what happened.
19:03What is it?
19:04Dynamite.
19:04Oh, no, I don't want it.
19:07Bring it here.
19:08How long do I have to carry this explosion around?
19:11Will it blow it up?
19:14Now, don't forget where we're headed.
19:16What's the use of remembering?
19:17I'm not coming back.
19:18Frog, if you wanted everybody in Red River to see you, where would you go?
19:23I'd go to the saloon.
19:24Well, that's where we're going.
19:25From this valley, they say you are going.
19:40I will miss your bright eyes and sweet smiles, for they say you are taking the sunshine that
19:56It has brightened our path all the while.
20:03Do you think of the valley you're leaving?
20:10Oh, how lonely and dreary it will be.
20:15Do you think of the fond heart you're breaking, and the sadness you've cast over me?
20:30Come and sit by my side if you love me.
20:37Do not hasten to bid me adieu.
20:42But remember the Red River Valley
20:50And the cowboy who loved you so true
20:57Another time, fellas.
21:05Frog's got a little number all wrapped up here for you.
21:07I used to call my cows with a whistle
21:15I used to call my dog with a horn
21:18Harmonica's the thing to wake the chicken
21:22Let the rooster sleep late at morn
21:26I used to have a swell calling system
21:30I blew till I run out of breath
21:33A hillbilly band from the city
21:37Run all of my animals to death
21:41Fetch me down my shooting iron
21:43I'm going hunting
21:44Fetch me down my trusty .45
21:48See the fire in my eye
21:50Watch the smoke when I go by
21:52Fetch me down my trusty .45
21:55They had a guy that played the Ackham Pucky
22:02Another fella played the sax of flea
22:06I never in all my days seen the gadgets
22:09Them hillbilly fellas played for me
22:13Now one had a funny sounding thinker
22:17Looks like he'd beat off his ear
22:20They might like that noise in the city
22:24But you ain't a gonna play it here
22:28Fetch me down my shooting iron
22:32I'm going hunting
22:34Fetch me down my trusty .45
22:37See the fire in my eye
22:39Watch the smoke when I go by
22:41Fetch me down my trusty .45
22:47Fetch me down my shooting iron
22:51I'm going hunting
22:53Fetch me down my trusty .45
22:56See the fire in my eye
22:58Watch the smoke when I go by
23:00Fetch me down my trusty .45
23:11See those horses?
23:26Pedals.
23:28They're heading for the job to report the bull that you're still alive
23:31report to Bull that you're still alive.
23:33Yeah, and when the Gold Bull's gonna tell him to hustle back to the gate number nine
23:37and get rid of the evidence.
23:39If there's any trouble, don't shoot to kill.
24:01Won't ask him a few questions.
24:06No, no, no, no, no, no!
24:36Come on, Frog!
24:43Get on your horse!
24:51Come on, Frog!
24:58Get on your horse!
25:00Come on, get on your horse!
25:06So you're sure you weren't out there looking for the dynamite that was planted in the gate?
25:09I've been telling you we don't know nothing about it!
25:11Then why did you run away just because you heard a horse winning?
25:13We thought it was a hold-up!
25:15What do you make of it, Ed?
25:17So far there's no case against it.
25:18But they were looking for the dynamite.
25:19And they both rode Pinto horses like the man that shot at me.
25:20You just supposed they were looking for the dynamite.
25:21And there's plenty of Pintos in this country.
25:23They might be guilty.
25:24But you haven't given me enough evidence to hold them on.
25:26Well, that being the case, then we'll mosey long.
25:27You bet you will.
25:28And we'll start you on your way.
25:29See that you don't come back.
25:30Come on.
25:31I've got to hide that one.
25:32We want to know where it is.
25:33I don't know where it is.
25:34I don't know where it is.
25:35I don't know where it is.
25:36I don't know where it is.
25:37I don't know where it is.
25:38But they were looking for the dynamite.
25:39And they both rode Pinto horses like the man that shot at me.
25:41You just supposed they were looking for the dynamite.
25:42And there's plenty of Pintos in this country.
25:44They might be guilty.
25:45But you haven't given me enough evidence to hold them on.
25:48Well, that being the case, then we'll mosey long.
25:50You bet you will.
25:51We've got to hide that one.
25:53We want to know where it is.
25:59Well, anyway, you tried to clear up the cause of these explosions.
26:02Yes.
26:03Better luck next time.
26:04It was luck enough for one day that nothing worse happened.
26:07They were guilty, Mr. Baxter.
26:10And they're working for someone else.
26:13Now, who do you suppose it could be that don't want you to complete this project?
26:21Oh, you say it's a chase.
26:22And we'll be catching our bay.
26:24And we can use our boat.
26:26If we send it fast, it never does last.
26:29So we'd better send it slow.
26:32Oh, we love our boy, and our boy loves us.
26:36What else should you expect?
26:38For some dark night, when things are right, we'll get it in the neck.
26:44With a pick, and a shovel, and a shovel, and a pick, we'll be digging home up then.
26:50When we think we're through, I'm telling you, we start all over again.
26:55There's a glass, and a bottle, and a bottle, and a glass for a quench, a human bird.
27:02But the only guy who's never tried is the guy that gets their bird.
27:07For a six-day hitch, we're digging a ditch till the day our payday comes.
27:14Then we're gentlemen till we're broke again.
27:18And on payday, we are gone.
27:22Don't worry, Dad.
27:26Shall I tell the men, Mr. Baxter?
27:28No punley.
27:31That's my job.
27:33Tell them what?
27:42I want you to listen carefully to me, men.
27:45I know your heart and soul in this project, just as much as we ranchers who've sunk everything in.
27:51And you know what we've been up against.
27:55Fighting time.
27:56Fighting dynamiter.
27:58What you've built up, they're trying to tear down.
28:01And what they've done has strained our finances pretty hard.
28:06This week, there was another emergency.
28:10It had to be met with money if we were to carry on.
28:13What I'm asking you to understand is, why the payroll will have to wait another week.
28:19What?
28:20You mean we worked two weeks without our payday?
28:23We didn't stall you in our work, and you ain't gonna stall us in our money.
28:27Is he, Bo?
28:28No!
28:29No!
28:30Your project is so important, like you say it is, you can raise enough money to pay us off.
28:35And don't expect another lick of work until you do.
28:38Come on, man, let's get out of here!
28:39Come on!
28:40Come on!
28:41Come on!
28:42Come on!
28:43Come on!
28:44Come on!
28:45Come on!
28:46Come on!
28:47Come on!
29:00I told you we were at the end of our rope.
29:02Not yet, Conway.
29:03There's a few yards that you hadn't figured on.
29:09Here's your check from I.B.
29:12The money's still in your bank?
29:14Take it and use it.
29:15Thanks, Gene.
29:17But that's only a drop in the bucket.
29:19But you sure make me feel that we're not licked yet.
29:23I'll see Hartley Moore again-
29:25But he won't be back until tonight, and those men aren't going to wait.
29:28Come, Mary.
29:30We've got to get a delegation together to argue with Moore.
29:36We've got to have that loan, Mr. Moore.
29:38But my bank already holds mortgages on half your property, and now you're asking me to accept the other.
29:43Of course we are.
29:45The tale goes with the hives.
29:47I understand, gentlemen.
29:49But we haven't time to argue.
29:51The men are out of control.
29:52Why, Gene Autry's over at the saloon now, trying to keep the men from quitting the job.
29:56If you walk out now, you'll ruin this valley.
29:59Everybody will lose their homes, farms, everything they've got.
30:04Can't do that to women and children who aren't to blame.
30:07We've got families, too.
30:09They've got to eat.
30:10You'll get your money.
30:12Baxter's arranging a loan now.
30:14He'll be here and tell you so himself.
30:16When?
30:17Now, don't pay any attention to this ditch rider.
30:22What does he care about you?
30:23Nothing.
30:24All he's trying to do is ease himself in with Baxter's daughter.
30:28Leave her name out of this, Ralph.
30:29Why are you...
30:30I said leave her out of this.
30:34I can't stop you from quitting.
30:38But you ought to Baxter to give him a chance to raise that money.
30:42Don't you think so, Bull?
30:44Well, if the men want to finish the job and then sing for the money, that's all right with me.
30:50Singing for it isn't such a bad idea as that.
30:53How about it, men?
30:54Do you want Bull to lead us in a little song?
30:57Not unless he can sing better than he can play checkers.
31:05Come on, Bull.
31:06Let's hear how you sing.
31:07Or I'm not shaming for nobody.
31:15What do you want to sing?
31:16Red River Valley?
31:19Let's have it.
31:27From the valley, they say you are going.
31:38I will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
31:45For the sand and the sunshine
31:52Our paths all the while
31:58Come on, everybody.
31:59Bang!
32:00As you go to your home by the valley
32:05What's the matter? Come on, everybody.
32:07Can you never forget those sweet hearts
32:14That we spent in the rich river valley
32:23And the blood which changed with the flowers
32:30There never could be such a longing
32:37In the heart of your maiden's breast
32:46That dwells in the heart you are breaking
32:54As I wait in my home in the west
33:01Come and sit by my side if you love me
33:09Do not hasten to give me anew
33:17But remember the Red River Valley
33:24And the girl that has loved you so good
33:36Now, don't you feel better?
33:38Nothing like a song.
33:40Hello, Mr. Baxter.
33:42I've got news for you, men.
33:44We've just put through a loan.
33:46You get a double pay on the 15th
33:48And a 10% bonus.
33:51How about it, men?
33:52That sounds good to me.

34:09What's he done now?
34:10Well, he held him out in the saloon
34:12Until Baxter got there.
34:13And then help Baxter sell them the idea
34:15Of waiting for a double payday.
34:23Hooray!
34:24That money must never reach the man.

35:12I'm sorry, Sam, but you must take your place to the back of the line.
35:14Oh, yeah?
35:16Sam, you're looking for trouble.
35:20What did you call me?
35:24Well, you take it back.
35:26I'm not trying to start trouble, Sam.
35:28Now, you know me. I'm your friend.
35:30You're not getting up until you take your place to the line.
35:34Oh, you don't!
35:36Look out! You're breaking my arm.
35:38Are you ready to hold your temper, Bo?

35:50Are you ready to hold your temper, Bo?
35:52Yeah, I'll quit.

37:47Yes, yeah, I've got a good look at them there were the men who came to Tom gene off me today brought in the steers
37:52Don't do it wouldn't do a thing like that
37:54It's Audrey he picked that fight to keep you fellas busy while his pals grab the payroll
38:01Don't you believe it. Oh, it's the truth. Conway's got the dope on Frog and Audrey
38:05And they're not gonna get away with it. No, we worked hard for that money. Now you fellas gonna stay in here and not do anything about it

38:20What's three or they're going on that way all right?
38:25Let's go
38:47Boy
38:55It's the payroll thief, Sheriff. The boys are in.
39:25We're trapped. We gotta jump for it. I can't swim. Well, hold your horse's tail.
39:50The horsey, keep your tail up.
39:57That's the first time I ever knew what a horse's tail was for.
40:19That got rid of them. There's only one way to square ourselves, and that's to recover that payroll.
40:34You bet. That's all. We don't even know who took it. But we do. Remember those two fellows you followed that day?
40:41That's right. They must have stolen while Bull was keeping us busy fighting. Where'd they go?
40:45You ride all day across those sand dunes, and you're almost dying of thirst. Then you come to an old prison that used to be a fort. Then they got you.
40:53Maybe yes, maybe no. We're going to find out who's going to get who.
41:23That bay looks like a bull's horse. I had a hunch we'd find him in on the fell.
41:28Well, if he's in on his friend Conway is too. There's somebody bigger than Conway behind all this. I think my hunch is right.
41:35Ooh. That's what we're going to find out right now.
41:38Then there's more than we were promised for doing the job.
41:43Meaning? Just what you think. Sure. We did all the work. We ought to get all of it.
41:48You get in here and do what I told you. Circle around the building, come in the other side.
42:04There she is. Now we'll hot put it out of the country.
42:14What's that?
42:18Whoa.
42:19The
42:48The End
43:18The End
43:48Get out
43:53What are you going to do?
43:56That depends on how bad my partner is here
43:58Pick him up
44:00I'll call a meeting of the board of directors
44:04And see what can be done for you
44:06But there isn't time for that
44:07The men are out of hand right now
44:09I'm sorry, but my first duty is to my bank
44:12And to my depositors

45:27We have waited long enough
45:30Let's do something
45:31If we can't have our pay, they can't have our work
45:34I don't know whether it's a hundred pounds of dynamite
45:37Yeah, and I know how to use it
45:39Well, then, what are we waiting for?
45:42The men have gone crazy
45:44There's no way to blow up the dam
45:46Hurry back to your engine and get steam up
45:48Miller, try and get the chariot

46:25Certainly I want to foreclose all my land
46:27But what good's the valley to me if the dam's blown up?
46:32Tell the men I'll give them their pay
