00:00:00Long ago,
00:00:26a group of sea lions made an extraordinary journey
00:00:32from the west coast of the americas
00:00:40out into the pacific ocean
00:00:56what they found was a paradise
00:01:05isolated from the rest of the world
00:01:10forged in fire and water
00:01:20each island with its own distinct character
00:01:32and each home to a unique community of castaways
00:01:42delivered here by chance
00:01:51and beneath the water surface
00:01:54an underwater world unlike any other
00:02:10today the descendants of those first sea lions
00:02:16rule these waves
00:02:20one evening
00:02:46on a quiet beach
00:02:48a young female luna
00:02:52comes ashore
00:02:53this is her home island
00:03:02a haven for both her
00:03:06and her newborn pup
00:03:07leo
00:03:11sea lions usually only give birth to a single pup
00:03:20so to luna leo is the most precious thing in the world
00:03:34she will stay right here beside him for the first week
00:03:40as they memorize each other's call and smell and cement their bond
00:03:48this small colony of sea lions is made up almost entirely of females and pups
00:04:03except of course for the beach master
00:04:12he's the boss here
00:04:14the bull
00:04:16adult males fight over females and this guy is the current heavyweight champion
00:04:30of the sea lions
00:04:31right from the start
00:04:33each pup has their own distinct personality
00:04:37that will shape the type of sea lion they will become
00:04:44most pups stick close to their mothers in these early days
00:04:52but leo
00:04:53he's eager to figure things out for himself
00:04:56like gravity
00:05:01once he masters walking
00:05:03the possibilities are endless
00:05:07the most important thing is learning how to find your mom
00:05:21nope wrong mom
00:05:26this is the one
00:05:42as the days pass
00:05:44leo grows fast
00:05:47thanks to his mom's rich milk
00:05:49soon luna decides he's ready for his first test
00:06:02the beach master will make sure the coast is clear
00:06:08while the land is a safe place for pups
00:06:10the water is not
00:06:23sharks patrol these shores
00:06:28they time their visits specifically to coincide with pup season
00:06:39and he gives the green light
00:06:45once he gives the green light
00:06:48it's safe for leo to enter the water for the first time
00:07:03the sea lion's first rite of passage
00:07:12remind me why we're doing this
00:07:18this is a young sea lion's first rite of passage
00:07:25swimming lessons
00:07:26luna stays with him every step of the way
00:07:39sea lion pups can swim within a week of being born
00:07:42game
00:07:45in the day
00:07:53this is a huge accomplishment
00:07:56yes
00:07:58Maybe Leo could become a big, brave beach master someday.
00:08:05Time to dry off.
00:08:11The sand technique.
00:08:21It's not for everyone.
00:08:28Leo aced his first swimming lesson today.
00:08:43At bedtime, an incredible light show begins.
00:08:49The Galapagos are so completely isolated from the rest of the world
00:08:53that the stars here shine brighter than almost anywhere on the planet.
00:09:00Next morning, Leo follows Luna down to the water's edge.
00:09:07But this is no swimming lesson.
00:09:10This is something she must do alone.
00:09:15For adult sea lions, every day spent on land is a day without food.
00:09:22Luna has to return to sea.
00:09:24To feed herself and replenish her milk supply.
00:09:27And Leo has no choice.
00:09:29And Leo has no choice.
00:09:31She's a little bit of a bird.
00:09:32But this is no swimming lesson.
00:09:34But this is no swimming lesson.
00:09:37This is something she must do alone.
00:09:39For adult sea lions,
00:09:41every day spent on land is a day without food.
00:09:45Luna has to return to sea.
00:09:47And Leo has no choice but to stay behind.
00:10:14Leo's never been alone before.
00:10:27Maybe he could hang out with these guys.
00:10:37Sally like foot crabs.
00:10:41Sounds friendly.
00:10:44Where are you going?
00:10:54Where are you going?
00:11:07Ugh.
00:11:09Making friends is hard.
00:11:14And Iguana.
00:11:21Maybe he can be Leo's...
00:11:27How do you like that? Not even a Hollow?
00:11:30Stay like that, not even a hello.
00:11:47Will he ever find a friend?
00:11:49No!
00:11:57Far out at sea, Luna is focused on one goal.
00:12:05Fish.
00:12:09And she's joined up with some other hungry sea lions.
00:12:15Together, they make an elite team of hunters.
00:12:19There's a hidden code they'll use to execute their plan.
00:12:35There's a hidden code they'll use to execute their plan.
00:12:41An experienced hunter, Luna positions herself at the head of the pack.
00:12:50Gradually, they drive the fish toward the cove.
00:12:54But they need to watch their own backs.
00:12:56They're not the only predators hunting here today.
00:12:59Black-tipped sharks.
00:13:00Black-tipped sharks.
00:13:01The sea lions at the back of the group need to stay extra focused on the sharks and wrap up this hunt quickly.
00:13:09At the front of the pack?
00:13:10At the front of the pack?
00:13:11The water's getting shallower.
00:13:12And the fish are beginning to float.
00:13:13The only predators hunting here today.
00:13:14Black-tipped sharks.
00:13:15Black-tipped sharks.
00:13:16Black-tipped sharks.
00:13:17The sea lions at the back of the group need to stay extra focused on the sharks and wrap up this hunt quickly.
00:13:28At the front of the pack?
00:13:29The water's getting shallower.
00:13:30And the fish are beginning to panic.
00:13:31They're trapped.
00:13:32Now a third group enters the mix.
00:13:33Brown pelicans.
00:13:34Pirates.
00:13:35The sea lions are rushing their attack.
00:13:36The sea lions.
00:13:37The sea lions are rushing their attack.
00:13:38The sea lions and Judah juners.
00:13:39The wol Peac Christ.
00:13:40Alan, as my
00:13:53player dog that's injected into flies and bases.
00:13:55The sea lions are rushing their attack, trying to outrun the sharks, but now the pelicans
00:14:14descend and crab the fish right before the sea lions can push them up onto the beach.
00:14:22They let the sea lions do all the work and then swoop in and steal the bounty.
00:14:32And there's nothing Luna can do about it.
00:14:41They're robbing the sea lions blind.
00:14:48These guys will jam three, even four fish down their gullets at once.
00:14:55They're so greedy, they'll even try to rob each other.
00:15:07Luna can only watch, stunned by the sheer gluttony.
00:15:16But she's not about to let these thieves win the day.
00:15:27Back on their home island, Leo is working on his sea lion call.
00:15:42Neighboring pup, Maya, comes over to investigate.
00:15:49She's not sure if Leo passes the smell test.
00:15:59But before you know it, they're off to the beach together.
00:16:08It seems Leo's finally found a friend.
00:16:28One who loves to explore as much as he does.
00:16:43It's pretty clear, these two were meant for the ocean.
00:16:59Just like his mom, Leo's a natural at corralling fish.
00:17:19Out at sea, Luna is scoping out another shoal of fish for the team.
00:17:35The hunting party assembles for a second run.
00:18:05The sea lions are outmaneuvering the sharks this time.
00:18:12The sea lions are outmaneuvering the sharks this time.
00:18:24There's not so much a seas team that are coming out.
00:18:30Theioned
00:18:34The team is a textbook formation.
00:18:37The pelicans converge for another smash and grab, but this time the sea lions managed
00:19:02to push the fish further up onto the beach and shove the pelicans out of the way.
00:19:11Finally, the hard-working hunters get to enjoy what they've earned.
00:19:21It's an all-you-can-eat buffet for Luna and her friends.
00:19:26No pelicans allowed.
00:19:36Give me that fish and get out of here.
00:19:41Luna fills her belly.
00:19:45Now she's got all she needs to feed Leo.
00:19:49Plus, a pretty impressive victory over those pelican pirates.
00:20:04It's been two days since Luna left.
00:20:07In her absence, Leo started to push his boundaries.
00:20:12He's on his way to the other side of the island.
00:20:21Hello up there.
00:20:25Yeah, it's gonna be a little tricky making friends over here.
00:20:38Do not approach the other mons.
00:20:55Leo ventures even further out onto the lava rock shore.
00:21:01Woo.
00:21:18It's hot out here.
00:21:19He's gotta get out of the sun.
00:21:28Maybe a swim?
00:21:39Leo loves the ocean
00:21:44But this is not his cozy little home beach
00:21:49These are jagged rocks and the tide is rising
00:21:58Soon he's surrounded by water
00:22:19His swimming lessons did not prepare him for this
00:22:29The white water pulls him down
00:22:32Leo finally makes his way to calmer waters
00:22:42Leo finally makes his way to calmer waters
00:22:45Leo finally makes his way to calmer waters
00:23:01And just then
00:23:03A call rising up
00:23:05Over the sound of the waves
00:23:09He knows that voice
00:23:11But where is she?
00:23:16He's so exhausted
00:23:18He can't figure it out
00:23:27There she is
00:23:40Mom's come home
00:24:03Leo has done an incredible job of surviving on his own
00:24:05And now Luna has the food from her hunting trip
00:24:09To nourish him
00:24:11With lots of fresh milk
00:24:12hunting trip to nourish him with lots of fresh milk.
00:24:42Nearly a year has passed, and Leo's tiny mangrove island has seen some changes.
00:25:02The humble beach he was born onto has become a bustling city, with hundreds of new sea lions
00:25:30having moved here from other islands.
00:25:38The place isn't what it used to be.
00:25:47Luna is still a comfort of course, but there's a new problem.
00:25:52As of late, the beach master is no longer a friendly protector to Leo.
00:26:00It's the opposite.
00:26:03Leo's not a young pup anymore, so he's becoming much less welcome on a beach full of females.
00:26:19He can't understand why the beach master is trying to separate him from his mother.
00:26:23He used to look up to this guy.
00:26:26Luna has given him the best possible start.
00:26:42But, her role is coming to an end.
00:26:49Leo can play in the shallows around his island for now, but there will come a point when he'll
00:26:56have to leave this place.
00:27:03At least down here, he doesn't have to deal with the beach master.
00:27:15Unlike most marine mammals, sea lions generate their power with their front flippers, not
00:27:29their tails.
00:27:33It allows them to be incredibly agile in the water.
00:27:42In the coming years, these young sea lions will hone their skills in preparation for adulthood.
00:27:51And for Leo, that starts with exploring the ocean.
00:28:09The devil's crown, the remnants of an ancient volcano, and the ideal destination for a young, exiled adventurer.
00:28:22Leo is now four years old, and is no longer welcome on the beach he once called home.
00:28:30But the stunning marine spectacles on this neighboring island are a helpful distraction.
00:28:37Galapagos sea lions can dive deeper and for longer periods than any other sea lion species,
00:28:45reaching depths of nearly 2,000 feet.
00:28:51And the deeper Leo dives, the more wonderful the sights.
00:29:03Blue and gold snapper, black-nosed butterfly fish, even a guinea fowl puffer.
00:29:16But best of all, Maya has come by to check in on him.
00:29:23She already knows this island, and where to find some potential friends.
00:29:33The problem is, not everyone wants to be friends with them.
00:29:40That's not going to stop them from trying, though.
00:29:50Okay, enough of this.
00:29:53Who's next?
00:29:58White-tipped sharks.
00:30:01They're nocturnal predators.
00:30:06During the day, they just want a place to rest.
00:30:08But that's not going to happen.
00:30:14Because when sea lions want to play, they're going to play.
00:30:21And today's game is, chase the shark.
00:30:27Can I squeeze in here?
00:30:33Can I squeeze in here?
00:30:37Hey there, hi, found you.
00:30:42Leo seems to know to only nip at this end, and not the toothy one.
00:30:46Sea lions.
00:30:48I hate this game.
00:30:52Having made zero friends down here, Maya decides it's time to head out.
00:30:58Not Leo, though.
00:31:01Not Leo, though.
00:31:03They both know, at his age, the beach master won't happen.
00:31:09I hate this game.
00:31:10I hate this game.
00:31:15And then, but yet here, Maya, if you're wearing a face, the beach master won't hold him in
00:31:21the colony.
00:31:23not leo though they both know at his age the beach master won't allow him in the colony
00:31:34he says goodbye to his childhood friend
00:31:45there is no going back for leo only forward
00:31:53leo hauls out on a nearby island
00:32:15espanola it's a little busy here
00:32:23but he can probably grab a nap and warm up after his dive
00:32:31some familiar faces and some new ones
00:32:38where leo's from they don't have naskaboobies
00:32:46definitely not the sandy beaches leo was hoping for
00:32:53wow but right now he just needs a place to sleep
00:33:04what he doesn't know is that there are more than just boobies here
00:33:11there are waved albatrosses and it's mating season
00:33:16this could be a problem
00:33:24these birds partner for life so this annual ritual isn't just for show
00:33:28it can be 20 minutes long and it involves bill clacking
00:33:43bowing swaying
00:33:48honking
00:33:49and the top it all off the silent scream
00:34:04almost every waved albatross in the world comes to this one island to breed
00:34:07and the noise is relentless
00:34:23so much for resting
00:34:26to be able to return to his home beach leo moves on in search of some place
00:34:43so much more welcoming
00:34:57Like Leo, the Galapagos Islands themselves are on their own journey.
00:35:19The relentless volcanic activity here has them always moving, always changing.
00:35:27And it's possible any one of them could become Leo's home one day.
00:35:46Eventually, Leo finds an island where the coastline is rough and exposed, and the swell is picking up.
00:35:54If there's one thing Leo can't resist, it's surfing.
00:36:01If there's one thing Leo can't resist, it's surfing.
00:36:08If there's one thing Leo can't resist, it's surfing.
00:36:16It's surfing.
00:36:22It's surfing.
00:36:31From out of the blue, another sea lion joins Leo.
00:36:33From out of the blue, another sea lion joins Leo.
00:36:52And he's brought with him some other young exiles.
00:37:03What do you think of him?
00:37:11It's interesting.
00:37:49With spirits riding high, Leo starts up a game of catch the sea urchin.
00:37:53But on this reef, playing games...
00:38:10can be costly.
00:38:24Leo senses something.
00:38:40Run for it!
00:38:58A close call...
00:39:10A close call, but they all managed to escape.
00:39:26A massive 12-foot Galapagos shark on the hunt for young sea lions.
00:39:42With no adults around to protect them, Leo steps up.
00:39:50If he can't conquer his fear, he'll never become a beach master.
00:40:01The others follow his lead.
00:40:05Leo is gonna take on this shark.
00:40:11He's learned from chasing the white tips of Devil's Crown.
00:40:17Dipping on their sensitive tails is something that sharks hate.
00:40:21He shows the others how it's done.
00:40:29Finally, the shark retreats.
00:40:45It's not enough.
00:40:51When things got heated, Leo is able to rise to the occasion and face down the shark.
00:41:01Very few male sea lions go on to become beach masters.
00:41:04But Leo is showing he might just have what it takes.
00:41:13He leaves his surfing friends behind and continues on, alone.
00:41:22But now, much more empowered.
00:41:33The waters throughout the Galapagos are some of the richest on Earth, with over 500 types of fish.
00:41:44For a lone sea lion, catching fish in open water is nearly impossible.
00:42:00But there are other ways.
00:42:08Some fish hide from predators inside rocky crevices.
00:42:13Thankfully, Leo is patient.
00:42:19Sea lions have the longest whiskers of any mammal that can sense the tiniest vibrations in the water.
00:42:24As Leo pokes around, he realizes something.
00:42:42If he blows bubbles into the rocks, he can flush out the fish from their hiding spots.
00:42:48Gotcha.
00:43:10It's a start, but he'll need much larger catches if he wants to become a beachmaster.
00:43:35Leo presses on.
00:43:39The Galapagos archipelago is spread over a vast area, 23,000 square miles.
00:43:49So sea lions have to make huge ocean crossings.
00:44:04So far in his life, Leo has only explored a few places.
00:44:18But there are over a hundred islands, islets and rocks in the Galapagos.
00:44:26And each has its own special qualities that make it exceptional.
00:44:37Newly formed islands are just barren rock.
00:44:43Freshly cooled lava, where life struggles to get a hold.
00:44:51In older islands, plants have had time to establish, creating rich, varied habitats.
00:44:58On the far western edge of the archipelago lies Fernandina, the youngest island of them all.
00:45:08It looks pretty inhospitable on the surface.
00:45:23But underwater, it is a very different story.
00:45:33Deep water currents make these shores some of the most productive in all of the Galapagos.
00:45:41The water is so cold, even penguins have made a home here.
00:46:00Leo has seen iguanas like these on his home island, but what are they doing down here?
00:46:10Galapagos marine iguanas are the only lizards on earth that have evolved to swim underwater.
00:46:18They feed almost entirely on algae.
00:46:25The local damselfish do not appreciate these land creatures coming down here and just helping themselves to whatever they want.
00:46:37Tearing apart their front lawns.
00:46:44And they're not going to just put up with it.
00:46:50Ugh, fine, the iguanas had enough.
00:46:57But now, it's Leo's turn.
00:47:10Leo knows what it's like when you're not welcome.
00:47:15You're a pretty good swimmer, you know that?
00:47:22You're a pretty good swimmer, you know that?
00:47:28You're a pretty good swimmer, you're speechless.
00:47:50After a long, slightly annoying dive, the iguana returns to the lava rock that is home.
00:48:03Many others are also hauled out here.
00:48:07Thousands of them.
00:48:11Their ancestors were amongst the first animals to arrive on these islands.
00:48:20Not exactly a warm welcome for Leo.
00:48:35The lizards sneeze out the excess salt water that has accumulated in their bodies from their diving trips.
00:48:40Leo also notices other island inhabitants sneakily slithering through the rocks.
00:48:55Racer snakes.
00:49:00Hundreds of them are amassing.
00:49:06All waiting for one thing.
00:49:09Newly hatched baby iguanas.
00:49:13Every route seems blocked.
00:49:15Every route seems blocked.
00:49:19Every route seems blocked.
00:49:21Every route seems blocked.
00:49:23Every route seems blocked.
00:49:25Every route seems blocked.
00:49:55This is one gruesome place.
00:50:16The little ones who managed to make it through are safe with the adult iguanas.
00:50:24Fernandina is a recently formed island, and at its heart is an active, simmering volcano,
00:50:35a ticking time bomb.
00:50:39Its relentless volcanic activity is constantly reshaping its landscape.
00:50:46But these harsh lava rock surroundings also create an opportunity for Leo.
00:50:58This jagged, uneven coastline is a perfect hunting ground.
00:51:05And now that he's an adult, Leo's ready to set his sights on bigger prey.
00:51:13Yellowfin tuna.
00:51:19They can weigh up to 130 pounds.
00:51:23And are capable of traveling at 40 miles per hour, twice as fast as a sea lion.
00:51:32And just when Leo thought he was all alone out here, another young adult sea lion shows
00:51:39up from a neighboring island, and he's eager to join Leo in the hunt.
00:51:57Neither of them seem to know quite how to approach this.
00:52:08The tuna don't seem all that hard to round up.
00:52:18But each time they get close, they manage to slip through.
00:52:36Leo almost gets one, but they're nearly impossible to hold on to.
00:52:44They're so quick.
00:53:05Well, this isn't working.
00:53:12Out of options, Leo looks to the island's quiet inner coves.
00:53:20There's an old exiled beach master who lives here.
00:53:24It's a bit of a gamble, but Leo's going to see if he can get him to help.
00:53:37Waking a full-grown bull sea lion from his nap is not a great idea.
00:53:44But when Leo wants to make friends, he can be pretty persuasive.
00:53:54Amazingly, Leo convinces him to join the hunt.
00:54:02What Leo doesn't know about this old bull is that when it comes to catching tuna, this guy
00:54:15is a legend is a legend.
00:54:20The two younger sea lions head out in front while the maestro hangs behind.
00:54:31Leo and his partner chase the tuna all around the cove, and the old master blocks the exit.
00:54:43He lacks in speed he makes up for in brains.
00:54:48He knows the tuna, as fast as they are, tire out quickly.
00:54:57Eventually, they begin to single one fish out.
00:55:04with his toad on the cove, I don't want to be out.
00:55:08I believe he's met.
00:55:11One of the guys who is trained in thisARS,
00:55:16will be able to pick up and pick a new fish in this tank.
00:55:21Remember, the team has been around for so long?
00:55:24And one of the guys who is trained in this tank,
00:55:29has found the one who is ready to worry.
00:55:32Finally, the tune is out of energy and out of water.
00:55:51The young ones step aside and let the old pro show them how to deal with one of these huge things.
00:56:02Leo can pack on the muscle he needs.
00:56:32And thanks to the old beach master, he's learned that not all adult males are hostile.
00:56:39It's up to Leo to decide what sort of bull sea lion he will become.
00:56:45The volcano has awoken, spewing molten rock across the island.
00:57:05As the 2,000 degree lava flows into the sea, the water instantly evaporates.
00:57:30Fernandina is on fire.
00:57:34And Leo is forced to move on.
00:57:37Again.
00:57:45A growing sea lion without a home.
00:58:04Three years have passed.
00:58:08And Leo is now seven years old.
00:58:11His travels throughout the Galapagos have taken him from dead volcanoes to lava eruptions and more.
00:58:19But he's never experienced the blissful side of volcanic activity.
00:58:24Until today.
00:58:27Hot gas bubbles from molten magma percolating up through the seafloor.
00:58:33The lava rock in this area was filled with these bubbles when it cooled, giving it a unique coarse texture.
00:58:48Perfect for scratching up against.
00:58:54Leo finds a group of females who welcome him to their little spa.
00:58:58And happily show him the art of exfoliation.
00:59:03Once they're good and pampered, Leo tags along with them as they head back to their home island.
00:59:18The shallows here remind Leo of his old home.
00:59:33The shallows here remind Leo of his old home.
00:59:46This magnificent extinct volcano is Beagle Island.
01:00:05Its sheltered sandy shore makes it the perfect home for sea lions.
01:00:13Leo's hit the jackpot.
01:00:15A beach full of females.
01:00:18Finally, a community he can be a part of.
01:00:40But wherever there's a nice beach...
01:00:42Somewhere...
01:00:45There's a beach master.
01:00:53And the nicer the beach...
01:00:55The bigger the beach master.
01:01:05Whoa!
01:01:06Leo did not realize there was going to be any competition here.
01:01:09Leo did not realize there was going to be any competition here.
01:01:21He's way outmatched.
01:01:22But he's got an idea.
01:01:23Maybe not the best idea.
01:01:25But it's better than the alternative.
01:01:35One thing is for sure.
01:01:37That big beach master is not going to make it up here.
01:01:38He'll just be waiting.
01:01:39Down there.
01:01:40For a minute there.
01:01:41Leo thought he had something.
01:01:42Leo thought he had something.
01:01:43But it's better than the alternative.
01:01:47One thing is for sure.
01:01:48That big beach master is not going to make it up here.
01:01:53He can't compete with the beach master yet.
01:01:54And until he can...
01:01:55He'll never have his own community.
01:01:56He can't compete with the beach master yet.
01:01:57And until he can...
01:01:58He'll never have his own community.
01:01:59Whoa!
01:02:00Oh, no...
01:02:07He'll never have his own community.
01:02:08Ooh.
01:02:09I'm sorry.
01:02:10I'm sorry.
01:02:11Maybe I'm sorry.
01:02:12Oh, no.
01:02:14I'm sorry.
01:02:15Oh, no.
01:02:16I'm sorry.
01:02:17But it was too late.
01:02:19a woman's voice is good.
01:02:22Oh, and I don't know
01:02:24that's why she wasn't.
01:02:25That's why.
01:02:26Time to make a quiet exit.
01:02:46He just needs to figure out a way to get down from here, without waking you-know-who.
01:03:12Maybe best to just take the back way.
01:03:31It's not elegant, but it gets the job done.
01:03:42Banished, for the second time in his life.
01:03:59Radio heads north, toward the most remote islands in the archipelago.
01:04:06Open ocean crossings can take sea lions days.
01:04:24But even out here, in the vast empty blue, there are pockets of life.
01:04:39A bait bowl of Pacific sardines.
01:04:50This is a perfect opportunity for Leo, as he looks to bulk up.
01:04:54The changing shapes and colors are mesmerizing.
01:05:13And Leo quickly finds himself chasing shadows.
01:05:20Luckily, a roaming sea lion pod shows up to pitch in.
01:05:39It's organized chaos as they pierce the bait ball from every direction and corral the fish toward each other.
01:05:46It's organized chaos as they pierce the bait ball from every direction and corral the fish toward each other.
01:06:05Leo is finally getting the feast he needs.
01:06:24Leo is finally getting the feast he needs.
01:06:44The bait balls like this are fleeting spectacles and rarely last for long.
01:06:51As he departs with a belly full of sardines, Leo notices the others floating at the surface.
01:07:03Far from shore and unable to warm up after their dive, they poke their flippers out of the water and use them like solar panels.
01:07:13It's definitely creative.
01:07:28But Leo's not feeling it.
01:07:31He's going to continue north, as far as he can go.
01:07:37There's an island he spotted on the horizon.
01:07:42Darwin.
01:07:43Darwin.
01:07:44The most remote region of the Galapagos.
01:07:49For Leo, this is the edge of the world.
01:07:57Sea lions can only remain out at sea for so long.
01:08:04Eventually, they have to warm up on land.
01:08:08Timing the leap is incredibly difficult.
01:08:15Timing the leap is incredibly difficult.

01:08:39I guess you're too small to be tu
01:08:42Miraculously, he's found a ledge where he can finally rest.
01:09:02Darwin Island's closest neighbor, Wolf Island, hides a dark secret.
01:09:21While Nazca boobies can fly great distances across the ocean to mate here, these little
01:09:29birds cannot.
01:09:32They're stranded here.
01:09:35And the sparse vegetation on this desolate island isn't enough to sustain them.
01:09:43So they're forced to resort to desperate measures.
01:09:51These are vampire finches.
01:09:53And they feed on the blood of the native Nazca boobies who nest here.
01:10:04Their distant ancestors would have only been eating parasites from the boobies' feathers.
01:10:10And as the boobies benefited from this service, they tolerated these smaller birds.
01:10:16But somewhere along the line, isolation and evolution turned these little songbirds into
01:10:27blood-sucking carnivores.
01:10:33These northernmost islands have offered Leo nothing but rocky cliffs and thrashing waves.
01:10:52He has no choice but to continue on his journey.
01:11:07Over the next several years, Leo explores every corner of the Galapagos.
01:11:28Leo explores every corner of the Galapagos.
01:11:43All its creatures, all its magic.
01:12:13His lifelong quest has taught him so many things, and yet it's still missing the most important
01:12:40thing, a home.
01:12:48It's been ten years since Leo left his home beach, and his mother, and Maya.
01:12:57And he's now a fully grown adult, still searching for his place in this island world.
01:13:03Another barren island, with menacing cliffs and no beaches.
01:13:23Leo's seen it all, and is prepared for any scenario.
01:13:31He's older and wiser now.
01:13:49More confident.
01:13:55He's willing to take greater risks to get what he wants.
01:14:03There's a current in this tunnel that seems to be pulling him in.
01:14:10It might lead somewhere.
01:14:30There's an opening.
01:14:31There's an opening.
01:14:37A secret beach.
01:14:38That seems like paradise.
01:14:39A secret beach.
01:14:44That seems like paradise.
01:14:51A secret beach.
01:14:52A secret beach.
01:14:53A secret beach.
01:14:58That seems like paradise.
01:15:05But he knows by now not to trust first appearances.
01:15:20Sure enough, this beach is already taken.
01:15:39But Leo's not a frightened young sea lion anymore.
01:15:46And now, he's just as big as this beach master.
01:16:02A secret beach.
01:16:24Finally, the old beach master's had enough.
01:16:44Leo shows him the exit.
01:16:54After years of searching, from one end of the Galapagos to the other, Leo has finally
01:17:05found a home.
01:17:15His mother Luna, who nurtured his adventurous spirit, who cared for him and taught him so
01:17:23well, would be proud of the beach master he's become.
01:17:33In time, more sea lions will arrive here, and they need not fear sharks.
01:17:42Not as long as Leo patrols these waters.
01:17:49All the females and pups who live here will be safe and secure.
01:18:05Leo has overcome every challenge on his incredible island odyssey.
01:18:11Now, he's ready to lead, and to raise up his own family on his own beach.
01:18:24This is his reward.
01:18:27This is his moment.
01:18:31This is his home.
