A couple has warmed hearts all over the globe after they decided to have their terminally ill golden retriever play center stage at their wedding. Anna and Steven Carter, from Manchester, New Hampshire, said they always knew that their pooch, Maybeline "Maybel" Joy, would play a part in their wedding. But a few months before their big day, Anna and Steven received some crushing news. Having taken Maybel to their primary vet because they noticed she kept lifting her paw, Anna then waited while the results of an X-ray on the paw came back. A specialist diagnosed Maybel with two types of terminal cancer in June 2024 – sarcomatoid mesothelioma and thyroid cancer with vascular involvement – which took away the "wedding high," Anna said. At that point, with their wedding just a few months away on September 7, Anna and Steven committed to making every part of the day as special as possible for Maybel, who Anna had adopted as a puppy from her aunt in 2013, her freshman year of nursing school. On the day itself, Maybel wore her own white tutu, which a seamstress had made from the large, puffy sleeves that Anna had opted not to include on her dress. Anna then undertook an emotional first-look shoot with her beloved 11-and-a-half-year-old pooch, who didn't leave her side for the rest of the day. These special moments – including Maybel being part of the ceremony and first dance – were captured by photographer Stephanie Berenson and videographer Jordon Johnson.

00:00This couple made sure their wedding day included one very special guest,
00:04their terminally ill golden retriever, Mabel.
00:08Even when she was born, we never left each other's side.
00:11She's been there through so many big parts of my life.
00:14But just months before her big day,
00:17Anna and her fiancé, Stephen, received devastating news.
00:21They had seen the tiniest little bit of a mass
00:23that was actually not even in her leg that we x-rayed, it was in her chest.
00:28And the tiniest little bit of it was showing in that x-ray that these radiologists had seen.
00:32They were heartbroken, but determined,
00:35and set about planning something special to honor Mabel on their big day.
00:39Anna used offcuts from her dress fitting to create Mabel her very own tutu.
00:44And she even had a first-look photo shoot with Anna.
00:47But the sweetest surprise came during the ceremony.
00:51She walked my mom down the aisle, which is her other half for sure.
00:56And then she came back to me while I was waiting to go down.
00:59It's like she heard the song and knew that it was her time to go.
01:02She even laid down on Anna's dress during the bows.
01:06I really think that she thought that the train of my dress was for her to lay on
01:10to be next to Mommy on her big day.
01:13We were told she really shouldn't be here because of her diagnosis.
01:16And if she's going to land on my dress and rip it, then so be it.
01:20Like, at that point, I didn't care.
01:22I was so, so happy that she was able to be there for my big day.
01:26And despite her condition, Mabel played a starring role delivering the rings.
01:32Now, Mabeline Joy.
01:36Could you come here?
01:38Good girl.
01:40Changing of the rings.
01:43Okay.
01:43With the nuptials complete, it was time for the first dance.
01:51With Mabel, of course.
01:53Let's go.
01:53Come on up for a five-month-old.
01:55Woo!
01:56Woo!
01:56Woo!
01:57Woo!
01:57Woo!
01:58Woo!
01:58Woo!
01:59Woo!
02:07After the experience, Anna hopes Mabel's story reminds us all of an important lesson.
02:12I tell everyone just one day at a time and, you know, try to give everyone a little grace
02:18because everyone's going through something.
