00:00Hey, it's J.R. Alana backstage with Locke.
00:04Hey, hey.
00:05What's up, boys? How are we feeling?
00:06Feeling good.
00:07At home, baby.
00:08At home, I know. This is a home game for you.
00:09At home, let's go.
00:11Wearing his Devil Rays hat right now.
00:12See? I have lightning underwear on, but I'm not going to show you.
00:15Yeah, please do.
00:16Not right now.
00:17You might hear some thunder from it later.
00:19Oh, my.
00:21Let me tell you, there's a lot of thunder on the bus from them britches.
00:24I didn't say what type of thunder, you know?
00:26Well, we don't have to go and do it.
00:28Yeah, yeah.
00:28Well, we're so glad you guys are here for the QYK Guitar Pool.
00:32I love seeing you guys in this setting kind of stripped down,
00:36doing kind of getting back to where you guys started.
00:38So you want us to strip tonight?
00:40That's what I heard, too.
00:41Unbelievable.
00:42Let's take our clothes off.
00:43You're going there with it?
00:43It's awkward with J.R. saying it.
00:46I mean, I don't know what's happening.
00:47It's okay.
00:49Preston's been on a boat all day, so let's just remember.
00:51Yeah, how was the boat ride, Preston, today?
00:52It was okay.
00:53I didn't know where I was going, and suddenly I'm on this really nice boat,
00:56and they had drinks, and we were floating.
01:00It was Crown.
01:00Crown took them out on the boat.
01:02Oh, okay.
01:03I don't know if I was supposed to mention that.
01:04Yeah, no.
01:05Oh, they're a sponsor.
01:05It's a huge sponsor.
01:06It was Crown.
01:07Yeah.
01:07It was Kevin.
01:08Crown on a boat.
01:09It was Kevin, and he has got really nice boats.
01:11Okay.
01:12Yeah.
01:12Where'd you guys go?
01:14I don't know.
01:15Beer Can Island?
01:16I went straight to the bar.
01:17Dolphin searching.
01:17I saw the boat moving, but I sat at the bar the whole time.
01:20There you go.
01:21I spotted a dolphin.
01:22Yeah.
01:23It was great, though.
01:24It was fun.
01:25It was a nice, relaxing afternoon, and we've been traveling a bunch, man, so we're in a
01:28different town every night for like the past 10 nights, so it was nice to just sit down
01:32and have a cold drink.
01:34Oh, wow.
01:34There you go.
01:35On a boat.
01:36On a boat.
01:37Throw that in there.
01:37Tell me what you love about shows like this, Chris.
01:41Man, you get to know who we really are.
01:43You know, I mean, obviously, being from here, a lot of people do know, but, you know, when
01:48you get Preston and I together on a stage and we get to talk to the, you know, the fans
01:52and tell them, hey, this is how we wrote the song, that, you know, we're boys with Jansen.
01:56I mean, he's like one of our best friends, so it's going to be a lot of mutual stuff going
02:00back and forth there.
02:01Probably bust each other's you-know-what sometimes.
02:04Chops.
02:04You can say chops.
02:05Yeah, chops.
02:05Buster, chops.
02:06He actually has chops now, but, you know.
02:08Oh, really?
02:09Yeah, he's, you know, he's super growing that chops out of him.
02:12I mean, me and Jansen trade a lot of camo items, and so, you know, he might have a jacket
02:18I want to trade for tonight, and then we trade some.
02:21We're traders.
02:21Is that why you wore that?
02:23Well, I always come prepared so I can trade for something.
02:27I don't know if I'd want to be a trader.
02:28Don't be a trader.
02:29Yeah, I don't want to be a trader.
02:29Yeah, I'm a trader.
02:30It's a skilled craft.
02:31It's a skilled craft.
02:33Skilled craft.
02:33Do you guys want to pick a question out of the hat?
02:35I already spilled these, so I'm excited.
02:38Are we each get one?
02:39You each get one.
02:40Okay.
02:40All right.
02:41Here we go.
02:44Preston, kick us off.
02:45What's one opportunity you feel like you missed out on?
02:48Oh, my gosh.
02:49Ooh.
02:50Yes.
02:52Oh, man.
02:56Wow.
02:57Did you pass on a song?
02:59I don't think it was a song.
03:00I'm going to make it music-based.
03:02I'm going to make it music-based.
03:03Yeah, you probably should.
03:05Yeah.
03:05We're going to make it music-based.
03:06This is going to go viral, so.
03:08I'll just be honest.
03:09We got this CD one day of 13 songs.
03:13I'll never forget it.
03:14And Jeffrey Steele was our producer.
03:16We were writing together a lot.
03:18And he said, before we pick our first single, why don't you listen to the CD?
03:22I put 13 songs on here.
03:23And if you think one of these songs is your first single as Low Cash, then just say it,
03:29and we'll make that your first single.
03:30So, Chris takes the CD home.
03:32I take the CD home.
03:33We're listening.
03:34CDs are these things that are like that.
03:36Yes.
03:36You used to be able to put them in cars or trucks.
03:39Been a minute, right?
03:40Yeah.
03:40And so, I call Chris, and I'm like, you got to go to song number eight.
03:48I think it's it.
03:49So, he listens to it.
03:51He says, I think it's it.
03:52We put it in the show.
03:54We start performing it live.
03:56We agree.
03:57Like crushing it.
03:57This is it.
03:58This is going to be our first single.
04:00And we book studio time.
04:02We're getting ready to go in and cut it.
04:04And we find out that it has been taken by someone else.
04:10Went after singing it for a year.
04:12And it was a song called She's Country.
04:15Oh!
04:17She's Country!
04:18Biggest song of 2009.
04:21So, then someone takes us into the studio a couple years later and says,
04:25I think you're still missing the song.
04:28Like, you just don't have the song yet.
04:29We're always missing the song.
04:30Everyone's missing the song.
04:30No, we're not.
04:31We're not always missing the song.
04:32Take that back.
04:33Hometown Home.
04:34That's the song.
04:36That's the song.
04:36I love this life.
04:37I'm not saying we don't find them.
04:39We find the songs.
04:40Ring on every finger.
04:41One big country song.
04:42But everyone in Nashville is always going to say it's a song.
04:43I'm still making a list of songs.
04:45Okay?
04:46So, but I will say this.
04:47Three favorite colors.
04:48But, thank you.
04:49Beach Boys.
04:49So, before we had our first big hit, someone came to us and said,
04:54I think you need to, you know, have a meeting with this person, this songwriter.
04:59They've written a song and they would like to pitch it to you personally.
05:02First time you wrote it.
05:03First, so we go into the room.
05:06He sits, Tom Douglas sits down at the piano and he plays this song for Chris and I live
05:10in person and says, I want you guys to have this song.
05:13And we're like, there's not a dry eye in the room.
05:16I mean, it's a powerful ballad.
05:17And we said, we'll take it.
05:20And we took it to our producers.
05:23We took it to the studio.
05:24We just didn't have a label yet.
05:26Oh, okay.
05:26Yeah, this is the early days when it was just tough to make decisions because we didn't have
05:30the reins, you know?
05:32And that was a song called The House That Built Me.
05:36Oh, wow.
05:37Burned twice.
05:38Yeah.
05:39And you don't even know these stories.
05:40That's what I love about this show because we're buddies outside here.
05:44We partied together a lot.
05:45And you guys don't even know that we, near misses.
05:47We actually shot a video one time and we were walking down a school yard, you know, when
05:52you're walking down the school hallway and I was like, just thinking of a song.
05:56And I had this idea for a song called Hit Me Baby One More Time.
06:01Stop.
06:02Son of a bitch.
06:03You wouldn't believe it.
06:04He used to get bullied at school.
06:06He came out a year later, that Britney Spears chick.
06:10Now what's she doing?
06:11Dancing on TikTok.
06:12What is she doing?
06:13All right.
06:13What's your question?
06:14You're up.
06:14That was a great answer, by the way.
06:16Mine's too easy.
06:16Thanks, man.
06:17I need a different one.
06:17It's like, did you play sports?
06:19Yes, I played sports.
06:19Well, obviously, no.
06:21Obviously, you see that I'm an ex-MLB player.
06:25Chris is actually, I'll say this.
06:27Chris is an incredible quarterback.
06:29I am a good quarterback.
06:29When he plays baseball, he takes it very serious because he's a really good baseball player.
06:33I do.
06:34And he actually taught my little boy how to throw a spiral at a very young age.
06:41I teach spiral very well.
06:43I teach spiral very well.
06:45He actually does spiral fundamental training on YouTube.
06:49Spiral very well.
06:51Actually, Chris can out-throw anybody I know with a football.
06:54Not anymore.
06:54Not anymore.
06:55I can't.
06:55And I used to make money off that.
06:56He did use to make money off that.
06:57It was an easy bet.
06:58Easy win.
06:59Easy win.
06:59Before I pin my shoulder down.
07:01All right.
07:01What's your question?
07:01Okay.
07:01This is a really good one.
07:03Jeez.
07:03What is your favorite piece of advice?
07:07So there's a couple things that my dad always instilled in me.
07:12And there's quotes.
07:13And I can probably still do them right now because I lived off of them for so long.
07:17So one was by Jacob Rees.
07:20He's like, if you have a rock, hold on.
07:24I've got two margaritas.
07:26Get it right.
07:26This is your moment.
07:27And you're hammering away at that rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it.
07:34Yet at the 101st blow, it will split in two.
07:37And it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.
07:41Ooh.
07:41Because it all added up to that 101st blow.
07:44Isn't that good?
07:45That's deep.
07:45I had to read it every time I took a pee in my dad's bathroom.
07:48It would be there.
07:49And I read it.
07:50And then there was another one.
07:51He's like, you got to listen to what Marcus Garvey said.
07:53Marcus Garvey said, if you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.
07:58With confidence, you have won even before you have started.
08:02Wow.
08:03Bro, that's to you.
08:04Walk it off.
08:05Walk it off.
08:06Ladies and gentlemen, come to the stage all night.
08:09No, you can say off if you want.
08:10It's fine.
08:10The interview is over at that point.
08:12We learned a lot today.
08:13They're good, right?
08:13They're good, though.
08:14I mean, I lived off of those quotes for a long time.
08:17I still do.
08:17Did you not put your phone on silent during an interview, Preston?
08:20I don't think I was me.
08:21Is that your phone?
08:21I don't think that was me.
08:23Well, we appreciate you being here.
08:24Was that the thunder?
08:25My piece of advice is always put your phone on silent.
08:28Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:30Come in for a look, Ash.
08:31Come in for a look, Ash.
08:31Come in for a look, Ash.
08:32Come in for a look, Ash.
08:32Come in for a look, Ash.
08:33Come in for a look, Ash.
08:34Come in for a look, Ash.
