00:00we were supposed to run into him at uh spring training but uh we missed each other but now
00:06we're back together please welcome mr garrett stubbs to our show how's it going guys good
00:12garrett how you doing man i'm doing well excellent but yeah sorry we missed you at uh spring training
00:17did you uh did you enjoy yourself uh in getting ready for the season while you're in clear water
00:21yeah spring training's always fun it's kind of that time where you get to find where your body's
00:27at also get to see the boys for the first time in a while um luckily we keep in touch in the off
00:32season but spring training is a good time and then you get to that last week in spring and you can't
00:37wait to get going again nice it's got to be i would imagine when you guys are done warming up you start
00:43to groove you get out it's time to get started um did you get uh on on the first day that you're
00:48actually playing a little little bit of butterflies a little bit of excitement in that way in spring
00:54training no no no once the season starts okay uh once the season starts yeah i mean it's a little
00:59bit different than when you're going through the motions a little bit in spring training obviously
01:04you try to keep the intensity up as much as possible in spring uh but at the end of the day
01:08the games just are not the same they don't have the same vibe the adrenaline's not there the same way
01:13that you do during the season so you get into opening day you see the flyover on opening day uh and the
01:20butterflies start to go a little bit more uh well speaking of spring training garrett i saw the
01:26video that the fills put out yesterday uh and it featured you which was really cool you were mic'd
01:29up you were uh you know running around the field and chatting with your with your um teammates and
01:33some of the coaching staff and you shared a story and i would love for you to share it with the show
01:37uh and i'm just gonna say this to you uh explain what happened with red 32 sure yeah uh well it's
01:45funny when i get mic'd up uh a lot of the uh a lot of the stuff that they record they end up not being
01:52able to use we know the feeling yeah yeah you do know the feeling so with red 32 it was shorber's
02:01birthday um and shorbs and i were at the stadium um and we were going straight from the stadium at the
02:09end of the day over to the casino uh me brandon marsh whitmer field um and it was an off day for us
02:16the next day so we ended up seeing a couple blue jays guys tigers guys who also were in the casino
02:22anyways we go to the casino we played blackjack for about three and a half four hours me wit and marshy
02:30uh we finally find the bottom of the wallet uh unfortunately um we're getting up uh but earlier
02:38that day i had talked to our strength coach i said hey you got anything for me at the casino
02:43he says red 32 said all right fury red 32 you got it he's a local philly guy and our strength coach
02:50and we head over to the uh we're about to leave and i say boys fury told me red 32 we got to go over
02:58to the roulette table and put money on red 32 we go over to the roulette table i put money on red 32
03:04forbes tells me to put money on red 21 because that's my number also one spin
03:10dink dink dink bang red 32 on the way out of the casino every every man's dream on their way out of
03:20the casino when they've hit the what they feel like is the bottom of the wall wow so that that pays 30
03:26that pays 35 to 1 how much did you put on that red 32 it was 25 bucks oh good score and of course
03:34right when i hit it uh swarms looks over at me goes pussy you should have put 100 bucks
03:41and garrett hadn't it hit red 32 like uh five spins prior didn't you say something like that like
03:51it had just hit 32 so yeah about three or four spins prior to that it had hit red 32 and so i'm
03:59i asked i go we got to go to a different table because it just hit yeah and swarms is like you're
04:05an idiot dude just put your money down basically telling me you're gonna lose anyway yeah it doesn't
04:10matter that that's amazing yeah uh did you did you tip out your buddy who gave you the red 30 oh yeah
04:18all right good man every next day the first thing i did was walk into the weight room
04:22and hand fury some money nice yeah he he he got dealt out nicely for his uh his opinion you guys must
04:29have been screaming your heads off on that head going absolutely bonkers and the the uh pit boss came
04:36over to us and told us to calm down hey guys you gotta calm down you gotta chill out and we looked at
04:44them we're like f you dude we're walking out no problem see you later you know you're thrilled
04:51it's it's it's it's what you go to the casino for and when you're in a casino and you hear people
04:56yelling and screaming you immediately want to go there yeah how how is your how are your casino
05:01chops in general outside of the roulette wheel are you okay it's just like everybody we do we do this
05:07all year long right right right yeah we we did uh recently go to st louis which there's a uh slot or
05:17there's a casino attached to the hotel and me harp and stotter and trey was there and swarms again
05:25and we sat at a slot machine of all things and waited there because the jackpot was at the highest amount
05:33at 10k and we ended up staying there way too long and actually ended up hitting it but at the time
05:40that we hit it we were we were going the wrong way you were just trying to cover your loss yeah yeah and
05:49we just want you know you go for that exhilaration and we ended up getting it at the at the end but by
05:54that time our win wasn't as big as it was we had hit it a little bit earlier uh garrett i have to
06:02compliment you and also thank you um for the overalls coming in uh coming back i know that
06:06you've worked with with foco and uh they became a big hit last year i went to i was lucky enough to
06:11go to a bunch of postseason games and uh my fiancee bought uh the the overalls because you were wearing
06:16them and then more and more phil's fans were wearing them and we were sitting outside it was a beautiful
06:20october evening and we went in and what she didn't expect was um they uh hold all of the heat in so she
06:28had a sweatshirt on and the overalls in and so we got into the stadium and she was sweating her ass
06:33off because they don't breathe very well but you've remedied that now you have shorts overalls
06:38yeah the short holes are in a very big pickup for the summer uh it gets obviously very hot and humid
06:45here in philadelphia um and foco uh kind of changed the game there with the short holes so you you must end
06:52up looking like one of the von trapp singers something like that yeah i looked like a whole a
06:57whole bunch of things when i'm wearing those uh but whenever i am wearing them it means that we won
07:02so oh all right it's good vibes every time i see your uh your your lats are showing in the uh in the
07:08one uh picture there good job yeah normally i'm soaked in champagne or right or something
07:15uh but uh they'll do for some good batting practice in the cage too uh so um precedent mentioned
07:23that we were supposed to have you on our show when we were broadcasting live from clearwater back in
07:28in march and we were bummed because it got canceled at the last minute and i think i was especially
07:32bummed because we had never met you before but um your rep rep reputation is what i'm trying to say
07:38had preceded you and you know people just keep talking about what a great guy you are and and the
07:44glue that you are in the locker room that just you know kind of binds and uh bonds everybody together
07:50yeah larry boa in particular was talking about how important you were to the club are you aware of uh
07:55of all these positive things that people are saying about you behind your back and do you agree with any of
08:00it they just haven't gotten to know me yet if you're saying i'm a great guy uh we uh look both
08:08first off bo is awesome we wish that he was around even more than he already is obviously he's
08:13there in spring training uh every single day hitting fungos uh in season he does a lot more uh you know
08:20up in the office type stuff um and he comes down on the field every so often i think we asked him this
08:25year to make his rounds a little bit more down on the field just because he's an awesome guy to have
08:30around um just a really good presence and obviously a great baseball mind well uh then yeah in the locker
08:37room man we just have a good time we love to hang out with each other um i like to mess around um you
08:43know i i'm not in there as much as the rest of the guys so i have a lot of time on my hands um get to
08:50have the boys you know it's 162 games man it gets stale uh most people in this city at least tune into
08:59borderline every single game yeah um but being in that locker room for six seven eight hours a day
09:06with each other um it can get stale so i just like to make sure that everybody's uh not feeling that
09:11way uh and do that the best that i can and luckily we have a great group of dudes to do it yeah you
09:17guys have like a bunch of stuff in the locker room uh like foosball table ping pong table stuff like that
09:21do you guys have tournaments and who's who's the best out there who's the who's the guy on the team that
09:26has hands down the best hand-eye coordination so yeah we got ping pong in there i'm gonna put
09:32stodder at the top of that list um stodder's got a whole another side business going on on that ping
09:38pong table um and we got about like a mini basketball hoop in there uh that we can like play around the
09:45world um i'm gonna go wheels or hoffy on the best around the world basketball player huh but yeah we we
09:52keep it light in there i mean like i said the game gets intense and obviously we're out
09:56there working our nuts off yeah um and our our intensities is at an all-time high when we're
10:01out there on the field um but up until then you know we like to keep it light and make sure everybody's
10:05in a good place how's your golf golf's good i played with wit yesterday wit is a scratch golfer yeah so
10:14i'm nowhere near there my my handicap's a 10. okay so i'm not like a bad golfer i'm not a good golfer and
10:21i'm especially not a good golfer when i'm playing next to wit but uh yeah we we got to play marion of
10:28all places yesterday which was incredible wow your first time playing there that was my first time
10:33playing there yeah but i hope we get to go back again what'd you shoot if you don't mind me asking
10:37because it's a tough track i i shot in 90 just right right in line with my handicap yeah no that's not
10:42bad i drove past there when you were playing did you see me by any chance were you over there yeah i
10:49i literally drove past there two different times nice yeah i i we we had a fun time out there man
10:56it was it was cool that course is about as good as it gets yep gary you grew up in tory pines you
11:01ever play there yeah we so when you're a san diego resident which unfortunately i wasn't i grew up in
11:08a place called del mar and it was its own like city you get to play tory pines for 60 bucks wow yeah and i
11:17was not a resident and you know in high school and college paying 200 i think it's like 260 for a
11:25round oh my god uh not very conducive to my wallet at that time um so i didn't get to play there a
11:33whole bunch but yeah i played there a handful of times and it's incredible so so larry i've always
11:38hit a hole in one how many of you hit cup so i have hit exactly zero and funny enough that larry
11:47boa hole in one we were the group right in front of him all day at that charity tournament earlier in
11:54the day boa and paco figueroa hit into our group because our group was we didn't have a whole bunch
12:03of golfers i'll say and i'm not going to tell you who was in our group but we didn't have a whole ton
12:07of golfers um so we were moving a little slower we weren't moving that slow anyways they hit into us
12:13i take paco figueroa's ball who had he had hit onto the green and i pick it up and i throw it back at
12:19him on onto the fairway as we're standing on the ground later in the day later in the day we get to
12:26that par three we finish up putting me and our whole group are not more than halfway off the green
12:34and here comes beau taking a full half towards the green trey is behind him and says four
12:44balls in the air turn around look at it he goes it's going in the hole joking around yeah of course
12:50course rolls onto the green and goes directly into the hole oh my god and all of us just went
12:57absolutely insane yes wow it's unbelievable yeah the yeah the footage stuff about hitting into us
13:03before yeah so he was probably beau is probably speeding up to hit that shot just to get it at
13:09you guys while you were still on the green yeah and since he didn't since he didn't stand over there
13:13and agonize over his ball for a little while he just swung and aced it that's awesome i love it
13:19awesome man yeah yeah uh gary you mentioned uh whit merrifield we we chatted with him at spring
13:23training which was really cool um but he's really one of the only guys who's new to the team this year
13:27most everybody that was on the team last year is back this year and we were chatting about it a
13:31bunch in spring training it seems to me um first of all i i'm a lifelong baseball fan but i love this
13:37team i love this group of guys in no small part because it seems like you guys really care about
13:41each other you care about the city you're also out there having fun it's just a really likable
13:46group from an outside looking in um what's your perspective uh you know on the inside
13:50being in the clubhouse is it is the same that we feel yeah it's exactly that uh it doesn't really
13:58you don't get that narrative or that perception from every single team around the league right i
14:04mean you got a lot of new players even when teams win championships the next year you come back and
14:09you're like dang half the team's gone um and we're lucky to have an owner in john middleton who
14:14who who keeps these core group of guys that one are incredible baseball players but two are
14:22incredible people too as well and you know you don't get to choose your teammates we're not the
14:27ones that make those decisions but john and dave dombrowski and the whole front office they do a
14:34really good job of making sure that our locker room is as good as it gets along with having the best
14:40players in the league in there as well so yeah it and witt was just another great addition um not
14:46only is he a good golfer makes me feel like crap out there on the golf course but uh he's a good dude a
14:53lot of fun uh good casino guy so just another good personality to have in in the locker room well and i think
15:00what it what has stood out as well amongst this group of of people your teammates is that we've gotten
15:06so used to seeing um star players sometimes be prima donnas and while they're on your team your your
15:14your hometown team you're pulling for them you want them to win there's still also a little bit of
15:18i'll bet that guy's a douchebag you know what i mean yeah yeah just don't you got your bryce harper's
15:23you got your guys that that appear to be like everybody else on the team they all they they are not
15:29saying i'm better than you and well i'm better than you at baseball right yeah yeah yeah but yeah
15:36but you know what i mean yeah we'll talk back to each other don't worry about that that's part of
15:39that's part of the camaraderie yeah hey didn't but yeah you're exactly right there's there's i mean
15:45harps been a superstar since he was 16 years old yep you know but but he's still an incredible dude um
15:52he could very easily be the guy that just is standoffish not a part of the team you know all those
15:57kinds of things and he's not he's the guy that's in the locker room every day with the boys hanging
16:02out uh and that's kind of the vibe that we have in our locker room and i don't know if it's been that
16:08way in philly forever how long but it's been that way since i've been here in 22 um and it's been super
16:16fun and uh plan on keeping it going love it um has anybody ever told you that you uh kind of
16:21remind them of a better looking matthew mcconaughey no but i'll take it yeah i've got i've gotten the uh
16:30i've gotten the adam sandler one i think it's just because we're both jewish yeah stick with mcconaughey
16:35no we love adam sandler so your your brother uh plays for the astros and and uh uh so i have two
16:43prominent teams two prominent cities um you're both charismatic um how long before one of you is dating
16:50taylor swift well oh well if it if that's the question one of us is going to have to be bigger
16:58stronger and badder than travis gelson yeah and uh i don't know if either of us want to take on that
17:03okay and you just got engaged by the way um garen i wanted to let you know um we're gonna have adam
17:14crinalee the philly's bat boy in studio next week and um adam can't do this because it's his job but um
17:19he's running uh for the leukemia lymphoma society's visionary of the year now technically he is not
17:25allowed to ask players for money however we as broadcasters are allowed to ask players for money
17:31so um i'm only saying this on behalf of adam uh he's not he didn't put me up to this or anything
17:35i've done a lot of work with lls over the years if you and or any of your teammates would choose
17:40independently of everything that i'm saying to support adam in his campaign i would be grateful and
17:45so would the leukemia lymphoma society so i'm just letting you know that now because adam's
17:49a good dude yeah you got it and i'm sure a lot of the guys on the team now knowing that would be
17:54more than happy to help adam out and the leukemia foundation there adam's an incredible guy we
17:59actually want him to come on the road with us uh which right now is not the case he did it a few
18:05times last year in the playoffs uh but we've been asking to get adam on the road uh for our games
18:11to be our bat boy there but um hasn't happened yet hopefully it will soon adam's an incredible dude
18:17probably the best bat boy in the league if they had a stat for it right uh garrett you guys are playing
18:21the white socks at next three days uh are you playing at all in these games uh i might be playing
18:28sunday obviously i never know until about the day before um but uh jt will be in there tonight
18:34catching turnbull for the first time um so we'll we'll work together uh earlier early today before
18:40the game on just what that report looks like um catching new guys you know is i don't know it's
18:46it's tougher than having the guys that you've caught uh you know a whole bunch before which like you said
18:52we've got a lot of the same staff back um but i've been working with turnbull these first three times
18:57so jt and i get together later today uh and and talk about that cool excellent well listen uh garrett by
19:03the way i want to let you know just in case uh we've uh our radio show has been on here in
19:08philadelphia for coming up on 25 years now together and the reason you should return to our show is
19:14since we have this longevity in town we are the only radio or tv show where you can call someone a
19:20pussy and say you work your nuts off so you got to come back on again sometime i kind of got that vibe
19:29just like just slightly when i was on my way into the show and heard porn in the in on the radio
19:36yeah yeah you're clear you're good to go yeah yeah all right great to have you on man thanks a lot
19:43and have a good time this weekend all right appreciate you guys having me thanks you got
19:46it garrett's stuff guys well i'm telling you he's a piece of work i love him yeah that's great love
19:52i love him
