00:00So John Tesh is coming to Seminole Casino Hotel in Immokalee on December 8th.
00:06I'm so happy to be able to have another Zoom date with you today, John.
00:10Thanks for taking the time to be with us.
00:13It's my pleasure.
00:14Yeah.
00:15So do you have your playlist all set for the show?
00:18No.
00:20You know, I'm a big, I think it's because I grew up in this sort of infomercial age,
00:27you know, where everything, and even when I was at CBS News way back in the day,
00:33there's just a lot of testing going on.
00:35And so I have a list of like 20 songs and we'll settle on 15,
00:40but I go on Facebook every now and then I'll play a song or I'll play a version of a song, whatever.
00:46And then we'll actually do a couple of small, it's inspired by comedians, right?
00:51We have a couple of great small clubs in Los Angeles, not far from here.
00:54One in Newport Beach, which is beautiful, you know, a hundred people.
00:57So we'll go and we'll like do two shows and see what they, and I learned this from Sting,
01:04actually, when I was covering him on Entertainment Tonight, I was covering him for his soundcheck
01:09for a tour he was doing.
01:10So I spent two days, you know, just watching soundcheck and taping it.
01:14That sounds horrible.
01:14And his soundcheck's going for three hours, you know, soundcheck for people who, I mean,
01:19you've heard about it, obviously people have, but basically you're listening to what the room
01:23sounds like, with the speaker, what the mix sounds like.
01:26And, and you're walking around the, you know, whoever is the leader of the show is walking
01:29around with a microphone, just testing everything.
01:31So anyway, I, I, I watched what he was doing and he, he takes a camera or did back in the
01:38day, like a, like a small video cam and puts it on stage, hides it on stage and points it
01:43at the audience.
01:43And so you get some amazing stuff.
01:46So I started doing that after, uh, it was like 1996 and what you get is you can see when
01:53you hear the music, right.
01:54But all you see is people.
01:56And so sometimes you'll see, you'll see this, you know, guys, whatever, or you'll see, you
02:02know, you'll see this, you know, couples, or you'll see, you know, this, or you see people
02:06go to the bathroom, you know, so, you know, where the high points and low points of the show
02:10are, and it's important to important to have all of them so that people can get, have a
02:13rest, you know, but when's the best time to have an intermission?
02:18If you have one of those and when is the best time to play a ballad, right?
02:22When's the best time to talk, you know, and, and how long should you talk?
02:26And you see it, you can just see it all, all every audience.
02:29I mean, they're different, right?
02:31Yeah.
02:31You know, casino audiences is, is much different because you can't hold them too long, right?
02:35Because they want to go and have some more fun.
02:37So as you're preparing, and I know you kind of have the same problems, not real problems
02:43that we do here in Florida, you're thinking about Christmas, but it's 80 degrees or it's
02:4790 degrees and it never really gets cold in the traditional sense.
02:51So is it kind of hard to get in that mood or is it just Christmas is all year round in
02:56our hearts thing or?
02:58Yeah.
02:59If we're recording a record or if we're preparing, yes, it's, it's like 95 degrees in Los
03:05Angeles when you're doing that.
03:06And so, you know, you're in a studio and you turn the air conditioning down and then
03:10you walk outside.
03:10It's like, Merry Christmas.
03:11What?
03:12You know, Santa's got shorts on, you know?
03:14Yeah.
03:15But, you know, we have three grandkids now that are Gibbs kids that are, are 11, 10,
03:20I'm sorry, 11, eight and six.
03:23And so all of a sudden, boom, you know, the Christmas excitement is back again.
03:27So that really works on me.
03:29Yeah.
03:29There's nothing like seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child.
03:32It just, it just changes things and it just kind of renews your spirit a little bit.
03:36Christmas almost killed me one, one year because we had a nephew who was, who was four.
03:41So I actually pretended to be Santa Claus.
03:44I got on the roof of our house in a Santa outfit.
03:48And I actually had a Santa's, I'm not Santa Claus, of course, I'm Santa's helper.
03:54Right.
03:54And I play Santa's helper, but we had somebody who came to a concert once and they actually
04:00made me as a gift.
04:02Cause I, I'd gotten them tickets and they made me a custom fit Santa outfit.
04:06So I still have it.
04:07Wow.
04:08But when you put all the beard stuff on the glasses with no prescription and everything,
04:12I mean, you're, it's like, you're blind on, on, you know, as Santa.
04:15And so I'm upstairs on the roof and I'm, I'm throwing, you know, uh, uh, pebbles down,
04:21you know, and this kid all of a sudden sees me with the bag and everything.
04:24Right by the chimney and just goes in and runs into the, runs into the bedroom.
04:29So yeah, that's, uh, yeah, Santa can be scary for some, for some people, especially when
04:34he's six, six at 230 pounds.
04:36Oh my goodness.
04:37That's awesome.
04:38So when it comes to, um, getting your, your, your set lined up, you know, you told us it's,
04:43it's very scientific.
04:44Um, how do you kind of do that?
04:46How do you go about your day?
04:47I know that, um, you know, I get up in the mornings early, do a morning show.
04:51You come on at two o'clock on sunny one Oh six three, but I hear that you're an early
04:56bird as well.
04:57I watched an interview interview and then I met him, uh, uh, at a cryo spa, uh, Mark Wahlberg
05:04and he was telling me, and actually it ended up on his Instagram as well.
05:08And he gets up at two 30 and works out and then, and then he'll take a half hour nap,
05:13like around four o'clock or something like that.
05:16And then when people said he was done, he's ready to take his kids to school and all the
05:19rest of that stuff.
05:19So, so I've started, I started doing that not too, not too long ago.
05:23I mean, you have to go to bed at seven, you know, and we don't mind that it's hard to
05:28find a restaurant that's open.
05:30If you want to go out, it's like, you know, well, there he is.
05:32It's the old guy who wants to eat at four 30, you know, but, uh, but yeah, so I, I got
05:37like this morning, I got up at, uh, at two 15 worked out for about 45 minutes.
05:42And you're, I mean, and you're just like, Oh, you can't even drink coffee, you know?
05:45And then I took a nap and then, you know, I'm, and I'm, I'm, I'm ready to go.
05:49Um, but I also do a thing that, that, that I have pretty bad ADD.
05:54So I do a thing called the Pomodoro method, which we talk about on the, on the, on the radio
05:57show where I know that my attention span is 28 minutes.
06:01And so I have a, I have a, on my phone, I have this app called Pomodoro and every 28
06:06minutes, it'll go ding.
06:07And I know I need to switch, you know, I need to switch, switch tasks.
06:11You know, I mean, if that comes in, in the middle of me, if I'm supposed to leave or
06:14in the middle of me talking, you know, it won't, it won't ding on the radio, but, uh, or
06:19if I'm, if I'm, if I'm writing, if I'm doing what Cal Newport calls deep work, then I'll
06:24turn it off where you want, if you're writing a book, for example, um, you, you, you want to
06:28be able to work for two, you know, for two hours, but I'm best during that
06:31Pomodoro period of about 28 minutes.
06:34Well, before we get a ding here, I'm going to go ahead and let you go.
06:39Um, but we're, we're excited to see you in, uh, Southwest Florida again at the Seminole
06:44Casino Hotel in Immokalee on, uh, December 8th.
06:47And I know we're going to be talking again.
06:48I like these, uh, these zoom dates that we have.
06:51That's fun for me.
06:52Yeah, it's good.
06:53So John Tesh again, um, he's on sunny one Oh six, three from two to seven today.
06:58I'm Gina Birch and, uh, we'll see you again next week.
07:01Hopefully I would love it.
